Bristol To Oxford Flight Vlog | SkyDemon In Flight

- There are many milestones to achieve throughout one's flight training and flying career. This flight may not have been a First Solo, but it still felt like a real milestone. An hour building trip to Oxford as a fully fledged PPL holder!
I put a lot of work into Pre-Flight Planning, Route Planning and careful consideration of Threat and Error Management before each flight.
I depart Bristol heading North towards Filton. Once clear of Bristol Controlled Airspace routing is to the North of Swindon, keeping clear of the Brize Norton CTR. The airspace around the City of Oxford is quite tight and can become very congested including the ILS approach for Oxford. Oxford are incredibly helpful and professional in assisting pilots, so I request a Traffic Service on the way in.
Oxford are a very friendly airport and I highly recommend a visit to them.
At the time of writing Oxford offer a weekend deal on landing fees: SEP light aircraft receive a free landing fee when uploading a minimum of 75litres of Avgas. As with all fees and charges these are subject to change at any time.

Best to be speaking to someone rather than sitting there silent. At least someone knows where you are and what you are doing if you have an emergency. Great to see your attitude to in flight discipline. Had fun identifying the land marks as you approached Oxford, my local airfield.
Thanks, always best to be in receipt of a service, especially around congested areas. It's quite tight as you turn that south-eastern corner of the Brize zone. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel
Great video. I flew into Oxford at the beginning of the year when completing my night rating. Great airport and I really liked the lounge, and the free coffee and biscuits were a nice touch ! 👍😀
Oxford is a brilliant airport and very friendly towards General Aviation. The lounge is rather posh, so it's a great place to take passengers that you may want to impress!
Very interesting and informative video CJ my nephew has been training at Oxford. Should have had his PPL test today but tested positive for covid today (3rd) 😔

Hi, Been watching your videos as also a new Pilot and fly in a PA28 out of Bournemouth. My Big worry has always been atc and found yours and any other videos talking to ATC so helpful so thank you. Question, I bought a voice recorder and a y lead to record ATC and myself talking. it works but I get a lot of interferance. I hope to still make a few videos when i go on trips with the GF so wondering what you are using to record as its crystal clear. I have the same headset and I assume the same radio set up. Cheers Rob

Another really interesting trip - busy at Kidlington (sorry London Oxford Airport🙄😉😄👍). You flew over several places very familiar to me as my dad and his mates used to fly in those areas - fond memories 👍😊😊
A couple of questions re Skydemon and the like if I may🤔🤔😊😊👍 Over, for example, Sandhill Farm, does Skydemon tell you if gliding is active (or had you checked prior)? I heard lots of glider activity close to Oxford - but guessing that was out of Abingdon?
Also did you not fancy going through 'Brize Zone'/MATZ - was that because of their radar issues, or did your routing set you up better for the approach with Oxford?

Happy New Year Muso! Yes it was particularly busy that day with active gliding around Abingdon and that area. I must be honest I don't know if SkyDemon will automatically "alert" you that gliding is active. You have to check NOTAMS and warnings both before departure and en-route along with a good lookout. I requested the Traffic Service for this reason, but that doesn't absolve a pilot of the need to maintain a good lookout. Routing that way was all part of the plan. You never know, in the next video I may route a different direction? 😉

Great video, and nice (free!) landing. Haven't been in to Oxford for ages, do you know if the free landing extends into night landings? That would be extra cool.
Thanks Charlie. I don't believe it makes any difference if it's a night landing, but as with all these things it's best to double check. Remember it's a weekend deal only and you have to upload a minimum amount of Avgas! Always check the fees applicable to you before you fly!
Just passed my PPL so looking at using SkyDemon as well so very helpful. Did you still plot your route in the standard way as a back up?
Many congratulations on your PPL my friend. Am I correct in saying you fly out of Compton Abbas? Yes I still used my Plog (kneeboard) in conjunction with SkyDemon and with a paper chart next to me. After reviewing the video footage I realised I must invest in a suction mount for a SkyDemon device so as to not be looking down on the seat!
