Got my legs blown out, had to crawl 3 miles to extraction as the sun came up; my only guide was fast fading star constellation ..This was not how the mission was supposed to end, but it was supported. They don't make games like that any more.
Southend Busker - i tried playing one of these game years ago but never really learned what to do. But your comment makes me want to go back and try again.
I remember running and hiding for hours to get to the extraction point, eventually stealing a helicopter and escaping, all because i wanted to..... still one of the best games in my opinion. No one has the patience for them anymore...
I had a bug where one of the guys just wouldn't shut up about 3 or whoever... OH NO 3 IS DOWNOH NO 3 IS DOWNOH NO 3 IS DOWNOH NO 3 IS DOWNOH NO 3 IS DOWN
In the editor you could attach a TOW launcher on the roof of that tractor, now you don't have to flee any more! The Zetor 7211 assault brigade shall be victorious! Sorry, TOZER 7211 that is.
civilwarfare101 yeah they really are all about that open world lol. Which I don’t get, because their open world games are pretty bland compared to a lot of others.
I remember completing Operation Flashpoint as a kid. I actually cried! That "Pilot lost at night with only the stars and a compass to find his way home" mission, was absolutely unrivalled.
Damn, I miss this game. I remember wreaking havoc on an enemy squad with an SVD from pretty far away. Far enough that enemy AI can't spot me despite the report from the SVD. When I realized how each round fired followed a ballistic trajectory and the rangefinder on the Dragunov's scope reticle actually helped me guide my fire, I was like, "Woah, this ain't your regular shooter!". Good times. What a masterpiece OFP:CWC was.
I believe it's the mission right after the Russians attacked and you had to run into the nearby woods to escape. First time around the fucking Shilka wiped everyone and I had only 1 buddy left lol RESTART
Lol, this. I could go through 90% of a mission without a casualty, but restarted when someone died anyway BECAUSE I REFUSE TO LOSE SOLDIERS IN MY PLATOON GODDAMNIT
1:"3 o'clock, enemy, soldier, 100" 1:"6, engage, soldier" *6:"Soldier, is history"* Man... I spent years listening to those symphonies. I even started my own campaign and then moved to ArmA 3 to continue these missions...
Holy shit. I just randomly remembered the original Operation Flashpoing: Cold War Crisis few days ago, what a coincidence. I got it for my (which I believe) 10th birthday present when I hardly knew english. I literally had no clue what was happening at all in the game, and going through the training took me hours, because I didn't understand what shouldering my weapon meant. It is incredible how much patience kids can have. But it felt like an amazing achievement going through the training course. I can still remember the title menu music, and how I was puzzled why the main mission was called champagne (I did not know the difference between champagne and campaign). I unfortunately got stuck in the mission where I had to drive the jeep somewhere, because I did not understand what I where I was supposed to go. I sunk hours into this game with absolutely no idea as a 10 year old, yet I cherished every second of it. Me and my friends just fooled around in different missions discussing what on god's name we were supposed to do. One thing I still clearly remember is when we bailed out of a heli from low altitude, and how my character broke his legs and refused to walk. That was when I was shocked how much detail a game can have. I will never forget (which I believe to be the first proper mission) where you charge into a village. I think I had gotten this game after CoD1, so I couldn't figure out how to aim down sights. Literally pressing every button, I realized it was defaulted to V, which I find very strange. After many deaths, I proceeded somehow, and believe the town gets attacked by tanks. And since I probably wasn't properly playing the objective, had my entire team killed. So I was huddling next to a house while the tanks roamed around me. I still remember my heart sinking when the house I was crawling around got hit with a shell and leaned over with some crack on the wall to indicate it's been destroyed. And this one heli scenario was one of my favorite as well. I learned how to control the heli by literally playing it over and over again, clicking different things and realizing things are happening. One day I managed to beat the scenario, and I saw the indication to return to base. I had no idea how to land the damned thing. I tried my best until I was going down too fast, so I bailed. The heli crashed in the woods, but the game recognized it as returned to base and I won. At the last cut scene I could see my co pilot standing next to a destroyed burning heli haha. I also remember how you hear something about getting beer when you fly back. I have to get this game again... I seriously can't believe how I remember so much of this game in such detail. I never thought it was such a big deal for me. I believe though I didn't get it, I felt the intricacies and the detail. Figuring it out made me feel like becoming a professional soldier.
My first game was killzone, i was 4 or 5 yrso, it took me days to finish the first mission, I wasn't used to fps and i had a really hard time aiming the sights at enemies. After a couple of missions I couldn't progress anymore because i got lost in a water purification facility if I remember correctly, still i have never enjoyed a game as much as the first killzone
I played it when I was like 10 too, luckily for me It was in czech language, but I remember I sucked at it too, so after playing few missions I played mostly only with editor, or instead of finishing mission I stole some tractor and kept driving around
I am one of the Americans whose name is in the credits of OFP:CWC. I was one of about 20 English-speaking fans on the OFP website forum before the public demo was released. Bohemia Interactive took our personal wishes (mine were side doorguns on the Blackhawk and fully rendered forests) and made them reality. When we heard that Codemasters was to be the publisher, several fans wailed that CM would be the death of the title. Prophetic. Another note is that Operation Flashpoint: Elite was nearly bug-free and the Classic XBox's clear voice comm made my time in OFP:E some of the best multiplayer gaming I have ever enjoyed. My suspicion is that Microsoft was not fond of the game because of its infinite replayability. (It had a Lite version of OFP: Resistance's mission editor.) I'll add further comments as I watch the remainder of this documentary.
WOW Small world. I ran a fan site www.coldwarflashpoint.com Loved those early days. The game was a dream come true back then. My taste has changed over the years and I wish their western game would have materialize. -AndOne
The Cold War Crisis was truly realistic. I dreaded playing as Gastovsky. Being alone in the forest at night felt so freaking real. For some reason neither Bohemia nor Codies can give me the same experience anymore.
True but modern Arma games are amazing still and now looking at Reforger, im super excited for Arma 4. "night felt so freaking real" well maybe but DayZ on the other hand sometimes at night can give you an heart attack, it was even more intense when we played mod version of DayZ back in 2013.
@@ampeg187 DayZ is a stupid mod with zombies and players killing one another. The 2001 Operation Flashpoint : Cold War Crisis and it's 2 expansions it's what the modern military simulators are based on, including the ArmA series.
@@ampeg187 Did you ever play Operation Firelord on the original? It was just a mission that made clever use of the mission editor features to go beyond what the devs could have foreseen. Intense hardly begins to describe the experience.
A big part of that is because we are all older and have "been there, done that" with many games. It's hard for games, especially single player games to grab and hold my attention these days. I still really enjoy multi-player games a lot. The bar has been raised quite a lot for developers to be able to hold the attention of older gamers who have seen everything the industry has to throw at us since the 90s or earlier.
@@dekster14LP IIRC you had to start to give them a move command, and then actually click on the map itself where you wanted them to go. It's been a few years since I've played so that could be wrong, and there may be a better way to deal with it.
Ive spent countless hours in mission editor. Damn I loved this game as a kid. And boy how I was scared of that mission when you get lost and injured in the woods and enemies were everywhere and all you could hear were birds chirping... LOVE IT
That mission was tense! I thought finding the M60 on a dead guy would help even the playing field, but.. nope. I got torn apart so many times trying to fight those Russians in the woods.
Yes same for me! Designing complicated missions, figuring out the codes. Play the mission over and over until it worked perfectly. Flashpoint dragon rising was disappointing in creator mode
I'm not sure if anyone will see this - but I always remember one of my favorites parts of a new mission was reading the journal entry for the solider you were playing as. just to see his "thoughts."
I was the Project Leader and founder of a mod called Flashpoint in the Falklands.. I was in Prague for a break with my girlfriend at the time and got personally invited to BI by Marek Spanel. What a lovely guy he was too!! :)
@@shauntbarry that's a shame, I recall there were many mods in development at the time but very few made it to fruition, i suppose it's a hell of a lot of work for a hobby and life more often than not takes over. Apart from yours (a Falklands campaign game would've been fairly unique), the other mod I was really interested in was named Invasion1944 and was D-day based. Again, I don't think it was fully realised.
@@bazzabaz I actually got divorced as a result of the time I actually spent on it.. That's why I left. My life was a mess.. Thankful it's all back up and ok again! It was a pure passion and it took over my life in a big way...

It was actaully meant to be a perspective from several brothers from each side of the war in different armed forces. 2 from the Argentine side camped in. And the others from 2 para and from the Navy.. Shame really I had the whole thing storyline mapped out where they met each other in unfortunate cirumstances at the end..
OFP was the ultimate game back then. One to beat all the others. Way ahead its time. Open world (no need to explain), survival (find a medical tent when you are injured, ammo etc), great stories (remember Gastovski?), elements of horror (when you are surrounded by tanks that patrol the area, and you must avoid them like monsters). Thanks to the editor and modding community, you could do almost any game there. I remember the first zombie survival maps in OFP ... Way ahead ... It was also my first original game. I ordered it via phone call (no internet). I waited about two weeks. I was even willing to cancel the order, because the cost of the game was almost half a year of my pocket money. I'm glad I did not do it. Fortunately, the game was in my language. It's funny how a child can quickly understand what the war is about, learn from mistakes. I quickly realized that using the M60 brings more enemy fire to you. That you have to flank. That you must think, not just push the LMB. That You need to aim before target when its run, and sometimes higher (bullet drop)... Discovery of mods, downloading them in an internet cafe, testing countless number of pistols and rifles just to see how they look and sound in editor for hours... Uber realistic mods. Errors, crashes... Later, internet and MP in large coop missions, where often You had 1 or 2 lives. I remember one game, where from a few dozen people at the beginning, only 5 left after 6 hours (included me, just cus of luck). First MP PvP maps, capturing areas, planting bombs next to the road and waiting for enemy (once I detonated bomb to late trying to kill 2 guys on a red motorbike - they didint die from the blast, but the shock wave gave them some sort of nitro speed, so they cant turn the bike and they are killed themselfs on the building next to the road...). I love OFP. I love this community. Writing shit on the briefing map to piss off admins (btw they know who write this cus of logs...). And I found a good mate IRL back then who loves game as well! We tested mods and campaigns and later we discussed how we finish each mission. And all those quotes when you died. Amazing. THANK YOU Bohemia Interactive FOR BEST GAMING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE (the only time I dont regret wasting time playing games). Check this stunning song about ArmA/OFP ua-cam.com/video/-DLJPr2lyno/v-deo.html
I totally agree. Huge maps, open world, tons of vehicles (and detailed interiors!), tons of weapons, tons of user made missions, mods, addons... It was just a perfect game. I miss my clan :'(
Remember that sp mission that reccomended a 1 gig or better processor? Man how far we have come. I was never able to finish it due to snipes and poor frame rate.

Bohemia is such a supportive company and I cannot recommend Arma 3 enough for those who haven't picked it up. I've clocked up 1,721 hours and always find myself coming back to play due to their continued support of the modding community, even going as far as hosting competitions and giving prizes to modders/mods that go the extra mile.
Exactly, AIS mods, RDS mods, blastcore (god I love that one). Had well over 100gb only of mods. Or just creating your own scenario/mission to let friends play on that coop as you throw things at them with zeus and ares :)
Bohemia guys have always been in my heart throughout the years. They put everything into Flashpoint and it was revolutionary at the time. Kudos to them for never giving up.
Operation Flashpoint: Resistance is a very dated game by 2019 standards but I'll never forget how fucking terrifying it was to play back in '02. The level of immersion and the legitimate dread of being hunted down by the Russian military (particularly at the start of the campaign) was absolutely amazing. Not many games have topped that feeling for me!
yeesssssss. The story around Victor Troska had a great arc. Getting your equipment, watching out for you AI members not to die, storing the weapons, it was damn nice. When you got your first tanks it was the bomb. Finally you could fight back. It really felt like an achievement.
Yes. And the first mission when you lost your squad and you need to find the resistance. What a great mission, alone in the wild surrounded by Russian Militaries. With just a map and no compas.
Hello from Czech Republic. I will never forget Operation Flashpoint. The box is still on my shelf. Never forgot the 7th mision where you left alone on invaded island. Amazing game for its time. Thanks a lot for this video. But FFS ALWAYS aim down sights in this game, this hip fire is pain to watch :).
"Pappa Bear to all squads, we're approaching the enemy positions contact in imminent God help us all...out" I couldn't play that mission until I got a 1Ghz CPU
We wouldn't have battle royale games, and The Survival game craze, if it wasn't for Bohemia making amazing games that allowed for amazing mods. PUBG and DayZ were both originally mods for arma. Bohemia made games that birthed the trending titles to this day. And we owe them a lot for that.
@@tunisiwi Yes this is very true. Arma 3 was built around being painless to Mod. and we have some of the best FREE overhauls and mods for any game. Arma 3 can be anything from Star wars, to halo, to full on Military Simulation with ENTIRE military packs for almost every nation. Arma 3 is a masterpiece. and Bohemia deserves more credit than anyone out there in the gaming industry. If you didnt know, Bohemia makes "VBS" wich is a simulation program used by the US Military to run training operations, and scenario recreation and simulation. nobody can play it unless you are a veteran or service member, with special access. the department of defense owns the contract. Its a very advanced but graphicaly watered down version of arma.
@@thebugsy7633 I've heard that it has some features like terraforming, craters from bombs and artillary and many more features that would be pretty neat to have in the next game or dlc. @@sernoddicusthegallant6986 perhaps, but Bohemia had a platform readily available, and through love of their modders, was in a community that supported the making of the Battlegrounds-By player unknown(the arma 3 mod), while bohemia created an amazing platform for him to develop his vision. Arms 3 Pubg was popular for years before he developed pubg.
You are possibly unintentionally paraphrasing optional course of actions in demo version of Operation Flashpoint - when all officers die during your assault :) I don't remember how many times I replayed it with different outcomes. One time I even successfully completed the mission - killing all enemies in Houdan and prevent any escapees from calling reinfornements - you get "Houdan sized" message and mission completes successfully without the need to retreat and eventually got shot down by ZSU-23. "Shilka". I was blown away by this. Single player campaign also had some twists and alternative mission paths in end-game when hunting for Scud launchers. Amazing game.
@@reav3rtm There were also a big ton of player made campaigns for OFP. From civilian resistance with persistent item systems (similar to vanilla "resistance") to being a colonel that is tasked to conquer all vanilla islands - commanding different squads, tanks, helicopters and transports - some of them have such twists too.
They just announced ARMA Reforger which looks like a TRUE child of Operation Flashpoin. Oh man, this game was ahead of its time. So many memories from Op Flashpoint... First game to ever entirely immerse me to what I can only guess was real military action... Nothing like crawling in the dirt for miles, because helicopters and APCs are patrolling the entire area around you and don't take prisoners. I should play this again.
back than it was more like sniping mode than just aiming with iron sights. it gave you sights siluete and was meant for precise shots from steady position.
One day, i fraged a guy while moving and hipfiring during a multiplayer game of OFP. Everybody was shocked someone pulled such an impossible move and win...
That would be great, does anyone remember the name of the proprietary tile engine they used on thier late 90s games? It made them run smooth on pretty crap spec PCs.
I was one of those who played the fuck out of bhd... as like, a 13 year old with no income, I always wanted the newer ones. That's around the time I discovered arma2 actually. While trying to find a decent flight sim
Operation flashpoint may not have lived up to expectations but it was my first military sim experience and I love it. The soundtrack is also one of the best I've heard.
@@r.daneel.90 Codemasters just never understood that OFP was never about being a battle simulator or tactical shooter. It was a *war* simulator. What made the game great was that it actually made you fear death, and it made you worry about losing your men, or spending too much ammo. And during missions you could never really relax, just in case you had missed an enemy patrol that spots and shoots you.
I liked Rainbow Six Rogue Spear a lot as a kid. I dunno if I was just young, or it was legitimately very hard, but that game was intense and slow paced / tactical stuff, NOTHING like R6:S.. Or Vegas ones... man... Rainbox Six was soooo different in the 90s / early 00s.. I guess not a 'military' sim, though, more of a special ops or SWAT or anti-terror kinda sim thing. It was good though. Got emotionally connected to your characters / squad and would actually feel really, really bad if someone died. I think I eventually beat that game either without anyone from my original squad dying, or at least, I got one guy from the original squad to the end of the game (Chavez rings a bell??). Forget which, it was like literally 20 years ago lol.. damn,. OFP is obviously a lot different, more like ARMA / Project Reality (BF 1942 mod) / uhhhh the game my best friend likes that the people who made Project Reality made... Squad? I think.. Those games aren't QUITE my cup of tea but I feel the old Rainbow Six games and OFP have some cross overs regarding immersion, realism, and emotional connections to your squadmates (just very different "scales" of warfare / combat, R6 being a small tactical stealth thing, infantry only, and OFP/Project Reality being more a vast open warzone with vehicles and such). It was also my first multiplayer experience. I can't even remember the name of the platform it launched the multiplayer through, but I'm sure it became defunct at some point I recall..

"after Montignac" is the most emotionally intense mission i've ever played on a video game. Operation Flashpoint surely one of my favourite gsames ever, a masterpiece.
Well you are wrong and I will correct you as you wish. Bohemia re-realesd the game from their code as "Arma colwar crisis" since codemasters own the flashpoint name but noone could forbid bohemia to release exqct same game with new name. God, the one thing I loved about Flashpoint: Dragon Rising was the menu music. was interesting. Mongolian throat singing was something I never heard before and it gave a feeling of dread and hardship that most music didn't seem to capture at all
As a massive OFP1 fan, I remember giving Dragon Rising a shot for the first time and listened to the whole menu theme song before jumping into the campaign. It was beautiful and I thought it would be a taste of (good) things to come. It wasn't, lol.
To put it simply, the best. Mechanically the newer ARMA installements take the cake, sure. But the atmosphere, story, characters, music, the setting. Oh man, that was it. Timeless classic.
Thank you for this excellent documentary. I joined Codemasters Spain as PR Executive in 2001, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis was the first game I worked in, and still holds a special place in my heart.
Arma 2 had the best content of the series. I wish they had stuck with real world military content instead of the half-arsed not-quite-sci-fi, not-quite-contemporary nonsense in Arma 3, given that the new engine is such a big improvement.
I feel like you should've given Zeus mode a mention, I've never seem anything else like it and it's honestly the gift that keeps on giving in plenty of communities
I wouldn't have 10% of my 1800 hours in arma 3 if it wasn't for Zeus! Back when I played OFP 1, the editor was fun to mess with, and I got dozens of hours out of it. But I never found it as enjoyable in arma 2 or 3 until Zeus. Hell, I even bought arma 3 because of Zeus, having seen Lutein's videos!

Bohemia interactive is one of those rare companies that actually cares about its brand and its community. They started out with just a pure live of making games and still today that's what they do it for. They love their community undoubtedly and enjoy making content for others to play and they also take criticism very well where as most would scoff at it. Like how in arma 3 there was no single player options yet after given some time they built a story (several actually) and expanded upon it with incredible flexibility. This is a rare company to see and we should be appreciative of their dedication. I'm aware that not all company stay pure forever but bohemia interactive has done one hell of a job at sticking to their roots and delivering on their promise.
Yeah, it was imho the loyal community and modmakers that kept the game alive...but yeah it worked in both ways. Still proud i started as OFP player, picked up my little 3d skills and eventually some of my work ended up into released tittle (arrowhead) and official VBS1 addons. It was great times beeing part of that community!
The best combination of gameplay and storyline in a combat simulator. That mission where you're left dead in the middle of a forest behind enemy lines and had to get to extraction asap was the most heart stopping I've played on pc and in real life! 😂😂😂 I prefer this over codemasters anytime.
You know how 'every time you mention Deus Ex someone reinstalls it'? Every time you mention OFP CWC someone starts getting PTSD flashbacks from that mission.
I remember the OFP mission that you are to late for extraction, alone, in the woods, patrols everywhere. Man, I have never felt that rush of a video game again. It is definitely in the top 3 video game experiences. That and vanishing realms in VR with some cannabis ;)
Cold War Crisis blew my mind. I even loved Dragon Rising and played its exquisite -- and at times utterly broken -- PvP for probably more than three hundred hours. It was brutal. I still have grit in my teeth. I don't blame anyone who couldn't hack it, but if you stuck with the game, there has been nothing like it before or since. In the end, a confused and distracted Codemasters, trying to strike a balance between CoD hysteria and the technical demands of a true milsim, allowed Sion Lenton to hijack the project and I believe he ousted Bohemia in an attempt to put his own mark on the franchise. The guy was completely inept and should never have been in that position for any game under any circumstances.
Dragon rising was NOT operation flashpoint by any means or shape or form. The publisher Codemasters bullied BI for the ip for that game and released that trash... so please don't ever put these games in the same category. Flashpoint and Resistance and Elite were all BI, the rest were abominations.
@@humanentity5890 Dragon rising was okay but should not be compared to the originals, I agree. DR wasn't even finished and all the vehicles handled like shit. This is still the most realistic depiction of iron sights I've ever seen in a video game. Newer games make the sights obscure everything. If you are someone who shoots, you'll know that the rear sight fades away and all you have to do is put the front sight post over the target and then, "SOLDIER IS HISTORY!"
OF:DR and full spectrum warrior..... Best military games I've ever played in my life! Man, my youngest years were the greatest!!! Great games! Great music! Great movies! The era between mid-late 80's and late 90's were the best time to be alive!
Awesome documentary! I have so many amazing memories from the original OFP and ArmA 1. The mods stretched their lifetimes by a huge margin and I spent countless hours in the editor and in co-op. I have almost zero memories from playing OFP:s sequels, which just shows how off the mark Codemasters were. Can't wait for ArmA 4.
That would be awesome, but now they'd have to do history of microsoft flight simulator because they unexpectedly revealed a new flight sim at e3 a few days ago, 4 months after your comment :D
Such memories from this game with the realism and the modding community. I did my first addon for any game when I modeled the Antonov 124 and tried to make it work with the flight model in OFP. Would have been great if the game allowed vehicles to actually be transported as cargo, but it was good for massive paratrooper insertions :D Thank you Bohemia for this wonderful open universe to play with for many many years!
I remember that one (thanks), yeah i think 1 of the "love AND hate" things where we wanted to make so much cool stuff but engine limitations f*cked up many plans and kept us hoping next update or tittle will give up that option :) .
I've never played any of the games mentioned, but from the sounds of things, Codemaster had the IP, but didn't have the compassion for the franchise; and created somethign to churn out profit. Sounds similar to what EA does...
@@Arcantropolo Yeah, Codemasters was the publisher for Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis as well as developer and publisher to the the "Red Hammer" official expansion to it while Bohemia Interactive was the developer of the core game, meaning Codemasters came away with owning the Operation Flashpoint name and the publishing rights under that name. Bohemia Interactive still owns the rights to the software and game content though. Which is why they were able to re-release the original Operation Flashpoint game under the ARMA: Cold War Assault name to fit in with the rest of their later ARMA series and still keep it commercially available without having to go through Codemasters for publishing. Operation Flashpoint is dead, long live ARMA.
I was born in 1991, I'am 28 years old now and I dont play much anymore but I'll never forget Operation Flash Point, I love you Bohemia Interactive, I always knew you guys were going to come out on top instead of Codemasters, Its very simple Codemasters has never know how to properley make a military simulation game much less a first person shooter that could compete with games like Call of Duty and others of the time, the only thing they have ever know to do well its car racing games From the moment I saw Operation Flash Point and its very powerful editor I knew how good the next games were going to be and then I said to myself this is it, this its what I've always wanted and if I like it so much then the whole world will If you come from the 90s like me then you know that this games sagas below were and still are indespensable to have in PC, each of these games sagas are unique ArmA saga Total War saga Mount and Blade saga
Awesome video. I was working at Codemasters as a dev in 2000 and remember early builds of the game, in fact I still have the copy they gave me free on release day. It wasn't a complete campaign even when Codemasters discovered them but I recall some discussion that the designer had been influenced by the Amiga open world game Hunter. We had some level designers from our studio in Leamington Spa work on the the original OF campaign, so I'm guessing there was a push to get the title out using some of Codemasters resources, in fact many of the digitised faces in the game were in fact my collegues. It's sad that Codies lost that partnership with Bohemian as it was some stunning IP and could have benefited them both. Arma is an exceptional simulation but perhaps underated and undermarketed, maybe it's for the best as there is little out there that comes close in terms of realism.
Last I recall it is announced, but it's far off (and good, if we can get an Arma that isn't bugged to hell and with a better engine I'm all for it, and that stuff takes time)
@@LeavingGoose046 to be fair, arma 3's engine has evolved alot since its release, sure, its still somewhat buggy, but today it is quite enjoyable, my only problem with ArmA today is its shitty AI
@@xekispir There's some inherent clunkyness to movement in it that doesn't exist in games such as Squad, and that makes it a lot less fun in CQC, also it's inherent lack of optimization and a melee made me wish they move to a new engine, although I still hope it includes most of the previous games mechanics (although, of course, added upon and improved upon and better refined).

Same... But when you restarted a mission over and over again (Yes I mean You "Steal the MI-8 and destroy two Convoys" Mission in Red Hammer) it started to feel right after a few tries... Until I find out "manual fire control" so the gunner don't waste 60 rockets on a Truck... Then I finally did it 😁
Well after spending 2 hours of real time traveling through enemy territory, taking occasional fire from unseen attackers, and dodging BMP's - just to reach the initial objective - I'd be damned if I wasn't going to cheat with a few extra saves.
I remember playing this on a cpu, under 1ghz. Running everything at bare minimum, and still feeling very immersive. One of the things I miss most, about OFP, was simply the way explosions were handled, and and exploding shells, where the ground goes up in a puff of white, then followed by the yellow flash/black smoke. It was a tactile, visceral effect. Love this gem of a game. Lucky for me I still have several disks of it. :)
I remember getting a PC gamer magazine with an early build or demo of this game on my old dell. I did the same everything on very low. It lagged a bit but was still playable!
I remember, I had just started playing Arma. I was with clan friends in a squad and there were other clans playing that were squaded up. It was a night assault. We were trying to take a town and the tactical move seemed to be to assault from an overlooking hill so it was no surprise that the hill became the staging and assault point for all of us. From there I observed some uninitiated players who thought they would drive their tank or armored vehicle (ala BF 1942 or BF2) right into town (lol) only to be quickly lit up and destroyed. We were THROWN off of that hill three times by coordinated infantry attacks by the AI which included devastating Mortar barrages. During the carnage of one of those attacks, it was either through a scope or binocular, I saw one of the AI drag a comrade from out of my sight to the cover of a building. My jaw hung. I knew that this was something special.
Got my legs blown out, had to crawl 3 miles to extraction as the sun came up; my only guide was fast fading star constellation ..This was not how the mission was supposed to end, but it was supported. They don't make games like that any more.

Almost 20 freaking years. Those early clips of the original Flashpoint brought some emotions up...
RoyRoger best game ever for me. I was a little kid as well when I started .
You just said what I was thinking too, except I got the game as a gift from my sister's boyfriend because he wanted to score some points with her lmao
it was really something special. As a kid the death sequence was quite powerful: the wise quote that comes up, the ominous music.

A big part of that is because we are all older and have "been there, done that" with many games. It's hard for games, especially single player games to grab and hold my attention these days.
Amazing.

"After Montignac" was legendary.... I love all the comments about it.
Operation flashpoint may not have lived up to expectations but it was my first military sim experience and I love it. The soundtrack is also one of the best I've heard.
Yep, the soundtrack is great. And the game itself could be the best tactical shooter with a few adjustments, a shame that Codemasters left it behind

Correct me if I'm wrong but Bohemia basically remastered the first game with arma 3? If so I know what I'm purchasing
Well you are wrong and I will correct you as you wish. Bohemia re-realesd the game from their code as "Arma colwar crisis" since codemasters own the flashpoint name but noone could forbid bohemia to release exqct same game with new name. But not into Arma 3. There is a mod for arma 3 and even its DLCs like red hammer and resistence (even though resistence have only few first missions as its still work in progress) all made by different people. But I highly reccomend downloading mod called "Cold War Crisis" by "Cnotk". I finished the whole campign perfectly playable just 3 missions I had problém with mission ending when I finished all tasks aso I had to use "endmission" cheat but despite that it was perfectly playable Cuscenes work great and Im sure I will yet play it again. Bohemia interactive is one of those rare companies that actually cares about its brand and its community. They started out with just a pure live of making games and still today that's what they do it for. In the end, a confused and distracted Codemasters, trying to strike a balance between CoD hysteria and the technical demands of a true milsim, allowed Sion Lenton to hijack the project and I believe he ousted Bohemia in an attempt to put his own mark on the franchise.

Just found out about this video game documentary channel. 3 videos in and I'm hooked. These are my kind of documentaries.
Liked and subbed.
Which Arma was this?
