Arma Reforger is not what I expected it to be. It tries to be everything I don't want, but in the process has some how become what I always wanted it to be in the first place.
...Provided they make it so you can run over tanks and ride boats down mountains again, of course.

You should definitely watch some videos of Veterans playing it.
They forced Shadows for long ranges which add a whole new aspect of tactical gameplay while also rewarding to move smartly.
Light feels incredibly good in forests and grass renders in a nice and not noticeable way.
Also while having a nice and compact pallet for vegetation.
It feels like a proper small island and not 20 biomes thrown together.
There experience might differ from player to player given that not everyone will be able to run at the same specs but if you have a decent pc currently, you will feel right at home.
Ah and also the FPS is majorly improved.... like a lot... trust me on this as an avid Arma player who was accustomed to 20-40 fps in Operations.
I barely drop under 70 here with High to Ultra Settings on 1080p while there is a lot of Ai and effects.

I feel like scale and map design have a lot to do with it. Maybe something to do with the terrain being realistic, even if graphically it isn't. Barely any open world games really give me the same feeling as a lot of Arma and DayZ's maps, which might not look photo-realistic, but sell me on their environment more than any other.
Arma 3's Stratis is one of the more impressive maps with its scale. At a glance it doesn't look like that big or impressive of an island, there's not a whole lot of notable landmarks; but you actually get down into it and see-from a person's perspective-just how far it goes, and how large the series of hills on it really are, and how enormous the one airfield is.
Livonia's bottom half is also impressive with its huge forest and bunch of landmarks dotted around. As a mission maker it's hard to comprehend the scale accurately, until you try to go between areas on foot, and it takes you 10+ minutes.
Edit: To add to this long ramble, I also think the consistency and expectations is key. If you have to noticeably change the shadow resolution (*Cough*GTAV*Cough*) 6 feet away from the player, I think you're better off just not having the higher resolution. That transition is far more off-putting than the lower resolution if I can see it. Who knows, maybe Reforger does this too, but the point is that I didn't notice it.
You can often notice where a lot of modern games have had to cut corners to keep performance up while chasing these super high fidelities, which kind of defeats the purpose. Draw distance is often abysmal (the grass distance, for example, is still low and noticeable in Reforger), and there's inconsistencies in quality between different aspects. That last one is a little more nuanced, though, because I still think pixel art with realistic lighting and effects-also known as Minecraft with shaders-is peak aesthetics.

@@oxygenseller4138 Arma in general was never fully impressive with its Map Density, it was quite quite barren at times.
I personally think Chernarus is one of the better if not the best Maps for having a good mix between empty and dense cities.
Though if you are already impressed with the Maps in Arma 2 and 3 then you will LOVE Reforger and its super attention to detail.
I thought DayZ forests where the best I have ever seen in any game but Reforger just blew them out of the water for me.
It feels much much closer to real life (at least from a European perspective) and the lighting feels much softer and realistic compared to what Arma 3 sometimes does.

If they bring back those Escape missions from Arma 3, I'm in. Those were great, just you and your pals plonked down in the middle of hostile territory, left to figure out how to steal a boat or helicopter or plane with enough seats for everyone with the entire map populated. Hiding in a bush a kilometer away from an enemy air base and making your master plan for taking it on with 4 poorly-armed dudes and a jeep is some of the most fun I've ever had in a game. (They were so fun that one of the potential final missions of the campaign is just an Escape mission, except with multiple hostile factions fighting each other in the midst of it.)

With the mod platform being uniform across the consoles and PC, without playing it yet as 40 AUD is a bit yikes-y for what is basically a beta test, it seems like the best example of how multi-platform releases can actually advance a series rather than hold it back. Especially now with consoles that are mid-tier gaming PCs, the only real limiting factor is the controller and interface adapting to that, meaning that devs are more so pushed to make the games much more intuitive and appeal to more people, rather than gaslighting gamers into thinking realism requires an anachronistic UI that requires you to take an afternoon to get it all down when starting out, and a feature set lacking ways that other games have sorted out a decade ago.

That's something that always drove me nuts about the previous Arma games. People say it's because it's always going to be complex making a good, realistic simulator but that still doesn't mean that the basic and important stuff you do normally shouldn't be streamlined.
I want to simulate being a soldier in a war, not simulate a soldier playing a simulator. Like I understand that some stuff is complex in real life but I don't want to press multiple buttons to drop my weapon to go through a door, or take 30 seconds to stand up and toss a grenade.

Philip you should really look into what the Eden Editor in ARMA 3 has to offer in combination with Zeus, its exactly what you want at 8:09 . it allows people to quickly prepare a scenario in the Editor and Game Master it for just a few friends to large communitys built around the mode enjoying 3 missions on a weekend. It would be great to show you what can already be done. Right now Game Master in Reforger seems like a dumbed down version of Zeus.

I think an Important bit that is missing here and a lot of people who just bought it without reading the Store page or listening to any prominent Arma UA-camr is, that this is NOT Arma 4 and is not a main title.
This is basically a smaller standalone stress-test and showcase of the new Enfusion engine where Bohemia wants to get the most important systems of the backbone of Arma working before fully committing in Arma 4.
Basically not repeating the absolute horrible release schedule that was Arma 3 Alpha, Beta and even Full Release for quite some time.
So a lot of people come into Arma Reforger expecting Arma 2 or 3 Levels of Content which I normally wouldn't blame them for if it wouldn't have been for the multiple Community Posts, Arma UA-camrs and Store Page exactly detailing that this is basically just a glorified sneakpeak at Arma 4 Systems.
There is 12 Months of Support confirmed, after which everything will fully commit to Arma 4 (Arma 4 is also already being developed).
But don't expect it to reach any level of Arma 2 or 3, simply because it never was meant to go that route.
The main big points for it is that all the Mods that get now created for Arma Reforger can basically be easily ported to Arma 4 later on, or with minimal rework.
As well as getting direct community feedback from Veterans and Newbies alike, so that Arma can finally not become an absolute hassle for new players to get into.
Especially with how bad the Situation was with Arma 3.
Also there are many concerns about "Arma dumbing down for console", which is just not true.
You could even argue that it got harder which NO 3D HUD elements besides the Names, so your really need to use your kompass and map to get around - location based menus which require you to look at the right spot to execute something like turning on lights in a car or switching the high beams - and also Radios finally mimicking real life closer with simulated maximum ranges and different frequencies which also can be listened into by the enemy if he gets a radio.
What I see many Core Arma Players confused (especially the ones that haven't been playing too long) is that removing all the jank that is the Arma 3 Menus and Systems to be somehow making Arma, casual.
Which just is factually wrong and any Arma Veteran that has played with MilSim Community for example can atest to is how much easier it is in Arma Reforger to actually get into stuff, especially with the new Mod Menu that will also work on Consoles.
Also some people claimed that Arma Reforger looks bad or like Operation Flashpoint which again is just wrong.
Arma was never a series that carried graphically but compared to its predecessors, its incredible (especially with forests and finally having forced Shadows which bringes a whole new set of tactical gameplay that wasn't available with the glowing Arma 3 people).
As well as having the best fps that you will currently get in any Arma title especially with big operations going on (I personally never dropped below 70-80 fps with High to Ultra Settings in 1080p even with lots of Ai [3060 Ti+5800x+32GB RAM]).
To basically conclude, Arma Reforger is not trying to be the another big entry in the series.
The main focus is to modernize(Reforge) Arma and to get the main gameplay mechanics right from the start before going into the big Project that is Arma 4.
There will be 3 Big Updates and support for 12 months but rather see it as Test and Standalone DLC.

    • @Harry-bp2dl
      @Harry-bp2dl 2 роки тому +9

Well said. It's probably more suitable to modders to port their mods to the new engine or to get to grips with the new modding tools and script language. Also the lack of content is, in my opinion, because the devs want feedback on everything and if they added all the cool helicopters or jets straight away no one would want to use the little unarmoured jeep.
I have to disagree though about the UI and menu systems, especially the game master menus. They just feel clunky and cumbersome given they take up the entire screen and requires multiple clicks to spawn in the unit that you want.
I've also seen alot of people complain about the price but you have to recognise that alot of people would happily buy the game at that price, myself included, to support the devs and it basically gives Bohemia the power to figuratively slam their cash on the table of the publisher and ask for any funding they want for Arma 4.

While at the same time building bases for both sides. All those hours spent doing everything like that, i really dont even enjoy multiplayer anyways. Operation flashpoint and Arma have always been for me mostly about setting up mission or scenarios and trying them out by myself or with friends. One thing we did with a friend is both of us made a scenario and then played through each others ones after another. Like a sniper/spotter pair stealthing through forests to shoot and then escape, or defending a house or a mansion and stuff against couple of waves of enemies.
It was nice, but always the gameplay has been a bit hindering with all the gunplay clunkiness and everything clunkiness, so it's nice to see that aspect being a bit streamlined.
And by the looks of it, this version of Everon looks really nice and feels real. Like you can almost feel the breeze that dries up the forest and grass after the rain and stuff like that. It feels so alive! And the forests look good too. I think many games understate how even a little patch of forest can have memorable rocks and bushes and paths but this game looks good in that part. Can't wait to someday get to play it.

Hey Philip; I'm not sure if you've played Arma 3 much, but the stuff you described from around 7:58 is indeed both very cool, and is something you can already do in Arma 3! Reforger's Game Master mode is basically a reimagining of Arma 3's Zeus DLC, now made into a core gamemode. Bohemia didn't do much with Zeus in Arma 3, but the players took it and ran with it, creating communities around the idea of a Game Master, mods to improve the quality-of-life experience, and so on, to allow for (exactly like you've described) having one person (the Game Master / Zeus) changing the scenario in real-time and other players (even if it's just one or two friends) playing through it. There's also mods like Achilles which add saving / loading in real-time so you can create preset scenarios.
There's no doubt Reforger / eventually Arma 4 will get all the tools it needs to do this, and more, in the core game, but if you wanna scratch that itch right now, I'd recommend looking into Zeus mode in Arma 3. I've often even used it all on my own, in singleplayer, to quickly go up into the sky, spawn some enemies for myself, and then go straight back to fighting from first person.
...though admittedly all the stuff you said about the clunky HUD is still the case in Arma 3, and I personally can't wait until I'm able to do all the things I can do in Arma 3, but in a new engine with actual nice handling, movement, and user interface.

I've seen the Arma might become casual concern many times and I'm not sure what to think about it. A lot of people blame the reduced keybind count. With that logic Escape from Tarkov or Squad are casual games as well.

    • @minecraftian542

Like Chrono said, I have no worries about it being casual. I think the controls have needed a fix for a long time. Accessibility and easier basic controls will make it alot smoother for everyone involved. Think of it this way, no soldier IRL is gonna be wondering how to unzip their backpack or lay down. So why should you?
yea im scared about AI, but it's the 2nd most complained about being netcode, so I don't worry that the devs will think something up.
Netcode is 100% the main thing being fixed right now with this being a first time multiplayer stress test of their engine.

the devs definently have put a lot of effort into the new engine but I am seriously worried if the new engine will be restricted over having capable vehicles and aircraft which arma 3 was notorious for. I hope I'm being ignorant but reforger just feels a lot like dayz so I'm pretty worried if modders are only able to import helicopters with bad physics that already exist in dayz

ARMA games are great, I remember figuring out how to use the scripting in the editor and I was kind of amazed by the environmental detail in Arma II, I wrote a script that gave me a list of all near by objects and there was everything from different flora and insects all around me.

You're the only one who can precisely formulate my thoughts and feelings on this genre. A lot of people don't get the nostalgic parts and that Arma has always had buggy and rough starts, especially considering multiplayer. It's trying to be something bigger and not settling for a single interpretation, a "right" way to play it. It's a sandbox and anyone who comes across can make of it whatever they want it to be.

The only thing that struck me as weird is the really long necks of all the player models.

I've always thought this, but with the release of this game I've been seeing other people say it as well. That Arma games somehow always feel incredibly immersive, it makes you feel grounded in the world. Maybe something about the way your character moves, how its very realistically paced and not too fast, and also how the large maps and environment seem to stretch endlessly in all directions. Seems like the new game has all that in addition having beautiful graphics, it's so nice to see.

This will only have one year of support(says on the steam page), so it’s fair they didn’t add many vehicles or any scenarios overall. I think that the concept of a stepping stone or a intermediate product to have players/modders first impressions and add upon their feedback is a big brain move for a studio

I do love the idea of being able to play as a single player in a massive island-wide battle. I just don't have the time to commit to coordinated massive multiplayer scenarios. it seems like the game is moving in the direction of keeping true to the ARMA roots as a military sim where you CAN participate in massive online battles, but is also making a single player and co-op gameplay and scenarios more feasible.

The way you described playing Arma is exactly how I've spent easily 98% of my 2700 hours in Arma 3 over the past 8-9 years. 3 was my first entry into the series, and I loved it -- often more as a walking simulator in the official maps or the player-made maps. I went on lazy Sunday morning drives on sunny days, or night drives with lofi chill hop music playing. I'm hopeful Reforger/4 will retain the same ability to navigate by the stars -- orienteering for long hikes/marches will be even more amazing now. And of course, the lighting, the feeling of being more IN the world, etc. that you covered.
I also spent a lot of time learning to script partially to fully procedurally generated missions in Arma 3 b/c I was looking for that similar one-player-among-many-AI experience you enjoy. ALiVE and some of the other mission maker scripting frameworks were really useful for streamlining this process with AI caching, virtualization, and de/spawning with varying levels of logistical tracking to provide some kind of resource limit and win condition for destroying 90%+ of the enemy's available deployment points or whatever.
I just found your channel, and I really click with everything you said.

That entire final segment of your video (persistent massive battle happening on one island) is available now in Foxhole. I would HIGHLY recommend you try it out. It's a top down isometric style game so it takes some getting used to the aiming mechanics, but it's extremely rewarding to play, especially with a small group of friends you can feel like you make some tiny impact on the war

I am yet to try Arma but I will say that single-player campaign of Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, on Hardcore mode, is the most terrifying, intense experience I have ever had in any military-themed fps. I don't care about multiplayer so I hope they make a proper campaign for this. I won't be satisfied just with "bots" though, it's gotta be the real deal, with story, briefings, missions etc.

That just looks REAL. Games often don't need to go above what you show on screen there unless they have a stylistic impact. Many games seem to want to go further but for me personally, all that does is push framerates down for basically no visual impact.

You bring up some really good points. It's true Operation Flashpoint and Arma 3 are remarkably unchanged. I would make little missions and they play basically identically in both. Hell, in 20 years they were never able to make door gunners actually grab their guns.
