Few features are as ingrained in the fabric of modern shooters as bullet time. Whether included as a mechanic that one can use at the press of a button, or an occurrence that only happens in scripted moments, bullet time is the punctuation mark of every game it graces; an awesome, yet functional tool that gamers and developers alike can’t get enough of. And it wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is today were it not for Max Payne.
Released in 2001 by Remedy Entertainment, a video game developer based in Espoo, Finland, Max Payne put players in control of its titular protagonist on a slow-motion massacre through New York’s underground. It was dark, it was intense, and - most importantly - it was much more than just a series of reality-defying firefights, with its story spinning an intoxicating, noir-inspired yarn about Max’s descent into madness as he attempts to avenge his family’s death.
Players lapped it up in droves, leading the industry at large to try and integrate its mechanics into their own products, and Remedy to produce a follow-up: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The latter offered an even slicker rendition of Max’s twisted world and mechanics, as well as an earnest attempt to try and portray a love story at a time when the medium, let alone shooters, rarely featured them. Unfortunately, while its reception was even more impressive, its sales struggled to pass muster, and for a period of time after its release, it seemed as if the series had nothing more to offer - barring a mediocre film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis.
Yet like Max himself, its spirit refused to rest until it ended things on its own terms - and in 2012, Rockstar Games released Max Payne 3. Featuring a cruelly aged version of the series’ protagonist, and a setting more reminiscent of Man on Fire than The Big Sleep, the threequel offered long-time fans a rather different experience that what had come before it; one that thoroughly used the mechanics, systems, and characters Remedy had cultivated during the series’ heyday, but still felt distinctly Rockstar in its execution. Not all were pleased with this change in direction, and its sales, while better than its predecessor’s, underwhelmed once more. But even its most ardent critics agreed that as far as shooters went, it was still duly impressive.
Like any video game series no longer being worked on, Max Payne’s absence from the current realm of triple-A games is sad. But when one evaluates what the series managed to accomplish while it was alive, it’s hard not to be appreciative of how it went out.
This is the rise and fall of Max Payne.

Max Payne 3 is one of the most underrated games of all time. It still holds up fantastically even today. It is well worth a replay if you haven’t played it in ages.
I regret selling my 980ti pre-covid :(
Underrated? It scored pretty good at release as far as I know and has a large fanbase. Rightfully so, the game has a mindblowing gunplay if not the best in the industry
I’ve played through 3 countless times. It’s timeless. The story and characters keep me glued time after time. Let alone the badass gameplay.
Thank god it flopped)
I replay it at least once a year for sure. If you want one-two days of non stop shootouts, Max Payne 3 is for you. On top of that the locations they show in the game look spectacular.
The series never fell; Max just retired, and he earned it.
👏
Max on the beach, at a tiki hut, sipping on a soda pop, watching the aftermath of the good that he finally got to do. And he prevented Passos from going down the same path as him.
Yeah he really love making click bait shitty title like every game needs to be milk to ground like call of duty or assassin's creed with never ending plot.
💯
I'm the 200th person to agree.
I'd rather have a solid trilogy than a milked franchise.
Like Final Fantasy
i agree with you, endless franchises never end well and usually at point of 3rd or 4th game/movie/season/volume - everything starts to turn into shit, sometimes even 2nd part fucks up everything.
@@riotriguez5854 Eh, the FF's are all pretty different. The only thing in common is that they're JRPG and called Final Fantasy. They could just as well title it something else
@@riotriguez5854 this is just a stupid comment lol
I'd like if Rockstar made their own linear shooter, seeing as Max Payne wasn't their character and cover-shooting's their preference. But they're only focused on open world games now.
I thought it was perfect the way they ended MP3, Max always kept saying that he wanted to walk away in peace and drift off into the sunset and that's what they showed, a perfect end to a perfect trilogy.
Yes
Agree 👍🏻
"he wanted to walk away in peace" and thats why he moved from NY to one of the dangerous places in the world))
Max Payne didn't fall. He was a perfectly constructed story and game series. How a series should be.
The 3rd opus's story was a bit too grand for my taste.
But the gameplay is still one of the most impressive I've seen in my life.

Max Payne fell just right. While MP2 would have sufficed as an ending, MP3 was no failure. You expected his story to end miserably, in a hail of gunfire. Instead, he chooses life eventually.
No more games are needed for this character. He's earned his rest. And he went out on a high note.

For me the Max Payne games are as close to a perfect trilogy as you can get. I'll never not get chills when I hear the game's theme.
I agree with you about the first two games but the third is too much of a departure that it almost feels like a different IP instead of the last in a trilogy.
Yeah, I actually played Max Payne 1 after finished Max Payne 3, in MP3 Rockstar focused on the narrative part with their camera angles and cutscenes and feel more heavier than Max Payne.
The ending was good enough to not need a sequel. It was perfect

Well when I played the third one it was super buggy. I liked it but it was very open and the story was short not really thought out as much. I did like the building shootout and bus shoot out, but i felt it should have been longer or maybe I ask for to much who knows
@fukka I wish for a remaster of 1 and 2 made longer and more action packed as well, but you only get so much from that.

Not to understate the importance of his multiplayer. First being refuge for lots of red deads frustrated players after the modding could let u forget about actually playing on a console, - just to become refuge again for ppl like me, once gtao started to bore the shit out of me, even well b4 it turned into this unrescuable mess of today. N while the xbox360 community slowly started dying of,on ps3 it still is alive n kick... killing dodging n refusing to leave. After all that years. There even still r ppl starting it. That truely earned the title "evergreen". Edit: Lmao,i've just yet seen the guy saying that it's online community died of much quicker, than their other online modes?... I struggle not to pee myself - did he even played it or is he just repeating bullshit of journos who definitly were painting a narative back then, that should help getting gtao over. The time of that first drop pretty much fits in the time the other was released. N still it's here n prves why game journalism mainstream is on the way to the junkyard of irrelevancy just like film critics r. These two groups today must b decode with reverse psycology to get at least a chance of some useful info.
I was thinking the same. People complaining too fucking much. All the max payne games where fun to play.
Never understood the hate for 3. It changed things up just enough to keep it fresh, and told its story beautifully.
The series never fell. Max had one of the most satisfying endings. 🙌

Nah i miss Max Payne. I wouldn’t mind a Remake for Max Payne 1 and 2 for ps5
This is kinda sad. A great trilogy that was released in the wrong time when online multiplayer shooters were the flavor of the month.

Max Payne 2 has by far the best script in my opinion. Max Payne 1 storytelling was special, revolutionary and badass but, looking at it today, even if it's still very good and unique, you can see that it has a classic videogame structure. While Max Payne 2, if it were a movie or a book, it would be amazing anyway and perfect as it is. Max Payne 2 is pure existential poetry. It's so complex, deep, full of metanarrative...everytime i play it feels like i'm learning something new about the story, the characters, the themes and the world where it takes place.
Anyway i think both Max Payne 1 and 2 are masterpieces. If i have to convince someone that videogames can be art, i would show them Max Payne 1 and 2.

In my personal opinion the story and the first game is in my top 10 favorite game story lines ever. To this day I'll go back and play the game through at least once a year. I just got such fond memories of that game and that time period in my life. Once again, just wanted to say what a great job you did on this documentary. With that being said I would like to tip my hat to you. Cheers
Maybe when Remedy wants to make Max Payne 4 either Rockstar can let them develop it and they can publish it or they each can co-develop the game together. It seems like if Max Payne 4 were ever happens it will be more on Remedys time table than Rockstars, as long as Rockstar is willing and allows Remedy to take the financial risk to develop it.
It would be awesome to have a remaster of the 3 past games for the new generation, but even better, a new one.

Max Payne 3 is underrated. It was different and wasn't made by Remedy, but it was fantastic and a perfect conclusion to the trilogy.
There were two problems I had with Max Payne 3: Its extremely linear levels that lacked options to tackle the enemies, and the weird character development of Max, which is contradictory to the previous games in many ways. Otherwise MP3 was a very enjoyable experience.
What is it you think is so contradictory for his character development?
@@SoulbentAnime For example, he transformed from a detective with smart remarks into a dumb gringo. His language is more obscene and pissed. Also drinking and painkiller abuse, I thought he was through with these after MP2...
In MP3 he acts like one of them GTA characters...
@@Ninja_Reborn That all makes sense logically for his character. This is a man who's wife and daughter were killed by drugged up psychos, had all his friends die, Alex Balder, Bravura after MP2, his lover Mona Sax, had to go on a one man crusade against armed mafia, the NYPD on his back, tackle a drug conspiracy involving the inner circle, and had to fight the Russian mafia. His life is stressful as hell. People get addicted to booze and painkillers for so much less.
I think it makes perfect sense that after all the shit that has happened how can he really be happy and not depressed? Surprised he didn't commit suicide after everything that had happened. Max has no one in his life to be with. He still has smart remarks but his vernacular is more vulgar and crude yes and he does curse way more, but I think it's a natural evolution of his character since he's hit rock bottom and he's just not as elegant as he used to be.
@@SoulbentAnime In the ending of MP2, it is implied that Max got over everything that happened, then MP3 comes in, and surprise! He didn't. It felt so awkward to me that after the character gets some closure in a game, he suddenly doesnt in the next. It makes me feel cheated as audience...
@@Ninja_Reborn you think a guy is going to get over the fact that his wife and baby daughter were brutally killed so easily? People can't get over the smallest things so how could you expect Max to truly get over his wife and daughter especially when he has no one to help him cope? That kind of thing would take forever to get over plus all of things that happened to him.
I got Max Payne 3 a year ago, and i think i've played through it half a dosen times now, i just can't get enough of that game! If there won't be a 4th movie it doesn't matter, the third game was a really good ending with amazing ragdolls and effects when hitting objects, which is something the series is really good at, the dust and debris that forms after a shootout. I'm working on my own montage right now on the games because they're so cinematic to me. I'm not sad at all that the series has probably ended i just hope for a full Remaster of the series as they all have incredible replay value.
Max Payne 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. I have so much fun with it. I know it wasn’t as well received as the older games, but I love it.
This Game is Soo underrated now, even this video has too few views :(
Max Payne is too good to be popular. But not popular enough to be bad.
L1ve2Win Wait... what lol. Call of Duty 4 is one of the best games of all time and is (was 😂) super popular obviously.
@@MaurickSh It was popular becuase it completely turned the franchise on its head. I know you were a kid back then and never played ww2 shooters, but the market was saturated with them. Outside of Battlefield 2, Cod 4 was the only other truly great modern warfare shooter at the time. Max Payne never tried to reinvent the will which is why it wasnt as poplular, (Not to mention the 2 Max Payne came out years before Cod 4 and MP 3 came out after cod was already heading down the shitter). Either way, your comment is fucking cringe and is an embarrassment on this channel.
Sycotic Forever How do you know I was a kid😂 but you’re right I was 11, but I was aware of how many WW2 shooters there were. CoD, MoH, Brothers in Arms, etc. Modern shooters never were a thing on a large scale until Call of Duty 4.

Max Payne 3 was sadly underrated.
I like it more and more, on repeated playthroughs.
The gameplay is so polished and enjoyable.
Max payne was a master piece and was the invention of bullet time in video games
Someone that was bought a PS3 gave me Max Payne 1 & 2 and their PS2. Those game got into video games again after 10 years.
Loved this particularly in this time now when young people only know the microtransactions centered trash plaguing the industry.
Max Payne 3 was great. Just lacked the darkness I appreciated from the first two.
It was disappointing for MP fans
@@Derax2 Not all of them though.
I loved the setting in a tropical slum, i liked the change of pace from the previous game
Selling human organs not dark enough for ya?
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess True.
Also, I just love how the game is set in Brazil. I get a bit tired of seeing North America, Europe, and Asia in video games sometimes.

The fact the 2nd and 3rd games weren't commercially sucessful make my many hours of enjoyment all the more special
Max Payne 3 is a masterpiece
at least remedy is still making amazing games. FEAR just fell apart and they made trash until they smothered all interest for it.
Max Payne 1 and 2 are absolutely amazing games. I know Max Payne 3 got a lot of hate, but I love it just as much as the first two.
I put so many hours in the online. Best multiplayer experience I ever had ever. PC and PS3.
Both Max Payne and Alan Wake are the immensely potential characters from Remedy lost in time. RIP.
at first, this channel is awesome. love watching this documentaries and... yeah... the voice is just pure perfection :D i wonder though, why nobody is talking about the one matrix game... it had bullet time, was way ahead of its time and yet, it just is forgotten by everyone... i think its really underrated, even the most underrated game ever... just wanting to remind you guys, this game was literally IT...
Max Payne 3 = the best Die Hard game ever made
