- In this weeks tried & tested, DJ Holland gives us a retrospective review on the Pioneer DDJ-SP1. An add on controller for Serato that brought advanced control to DVS users, the SP1 was everything a battle DJ could want. So why wasn't this controller perfect and what has come since its launch, way back in 2013?

Love the fact that you made this video in 2020, not worrying the controller being on the market for seven years now. :D
Just found out about the existence of this product tonight and it’s the missing gap in my setup - CDJ’s without USB, Pioneer DJM 750 MK2 and 1210’s - why would I want an all in one unit - I just need the ability to browse tracks and use the functions in Serato without touching the computer. Just got this for £119 and absolutely buzzing!!!
I still use this unit in 2024 with DVS, absolutely love this thing. Pioneer nailed it!
I still use the ddj-sp1 with dvs and control. Good tool!
I've had one since they released it and wouldn't trade it for anything it is the best
Can you connect it to a 750mk2, I have a rmx 1000 and don’t like it
@@shaundixon8067 do it have a usb on it if it do then yes
Still using in 2022. love it.
I bought mine in May of 2020 to go with my Numark Scratch Mixer and it is great. I use it everyday when I'm mixing from my home when I live stream my sessions and record my mixes for the radio station I for. I did buy one $150 brand new and I recommend this MIDI Controller to any dj who cannot afford an Pioneer DJM S9 or the Rane 72 or 70 mixer.
I just purchased the SP1 to pair with my Mixers Duo and Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX.
where you bought it $150 brand new?
still using it in 24... the only pioneer gear in my set up... this one is rock solid
....and yes I completely agree the build quality of this unit is simply amazing!
Use mine with a Pioneer DJM-450. Love it! Had it for 3 years.
Back when I DJ'd only with vinyl, I used to see the SP in other DJ's set-ups and wonder what the heck it did. Just last year when I finally made the switch to DVS, I found out what all the fuss was about so I got my own. It's truly a brilliant piece of kit.
Nice face plate for it BTW.
Thanks it's a 12inchskinz chrome wrap :)
Hi crossfader, I’m away to buy one of these , for my djm s3 , and plx 1000’s set up. Really impressed with serato DJ pro.
Never lets me down, no glitches, and sounds fantastic. Getting the sp1 , second hand for £110
i am using it from 2015 , Awesome !
Literally what you said at the end was spot on, if it had RGB pads and a lower price tag I would have bought it AGES ago (still debating it now tbh but yeah)
I still use mine. I originally got it instead of upgrading to a bigger controller. 300 bucks for upgrading a numark mixtrack 3 to the performance functions of a ddj sx3 is not bad(4 channels and some minor stuff ignored). Nowadays I got a bigger setup but still use the sp1 heavily on live sessions with ableton live. I can really recommend it for that purpose.
What is great about this product is that you can bring it at any club and you will feel at home whatever dj set up you run into.
It’s fully midi mappable, which is great for using stems, beatjump and loops
Build quality is unmatched
I still use this, every weekend :)
I've got a rane 70 in my main setup...ALONG with my SP1 that i refuse to get rid of - love layering me some pad modes
I love the cool blue. Mixers with bright lights look like kids toys
I bought one two months ago, second hand, for 100€.
For my needs is absolutely great! A solid piece of gear.
I use it in my dvs setup with VDJ. It works flawless and totally compatible. Just plug and play.
That's a great price :)
@@Crossfader I know... 😀
I still have the serato scratch live, with the rane 56s. its been a while since i used it but i am ready to dust it off and play it again and if it still works i may get the sp1 to control the serato functions. However may sell and get he numark scratch live.
I still use this 👍❤
It’s 2023 and I plan on buying one💸😎
Very informative review, thanx for it! I am using at home my numark NS7/// (very satisfied of it). In clubs I often miss the effects of serato and the performance pads. Would it be possible to use the SP1 togehter with CDJ´s in HID mode for full serato usage?
Use mine with a djm 2000 and 2 cdj 2000's.
In combination with rekordbox 5.
The SP1 is in this setup the perfect add on controller.
Also the little touchscreen in the djm can give some nice extra midi functions to make it complete.
I take one of these and an Akai AMX to all my gigs as a backup and even DJ'd a house party just using those and a laptop.
have one love it. now i need to learn how to remap it to use stem on serato. please let me know if you have any links for a quick tutorial. thanks.
It’s perfect for me being a dvs user. No need to touch the laptop. The colour of the pads has never bothered me. Great bit of kit
There's no doubting it's a great unit! We love ours!
Crossfader mine also came with the video licence. Never used it, as my laptop probably wouldn’t cope. Was that standard with all sp1s?
as these run quite cheap used, thinking about picking one up for use with serato studio (pads for drumming in patterns & knobs for fx automation)... it's between this and roland dj 202 which is more expensive, has the platters I don't need but the EQ section could come in handy...
hola amigo, excelente explicacion !!! te queria consultar, he comprado una pioneer flx 10 y no trae todas las funciones para usar los FX de serato, podras recomendarme algun midi con knob plug and play con serato dj? muchas gracias!
Wonder if Pioneer have an interchangeable part to change the performance pad to RGB....?
I still use a throughly reliable DDJ SX but want to access DVS without upgrading to a new unit, and also be able to take something separate to turntable only gigs.
Could I use this as a standalone for turnable only gigs with a normal basic non Serato mixer and then also thru the SX on other gigs as a combo and mixed set up?
Is it possible to use this with rekordbox and xdj 1000 mk2’s?
I have DDJSX3 and i need another accessory or hardware for third and fourth deck to be play with the track without going that to the software. I want something handy to access the features. Can I buy XP2 for this particular reason?
Traktor user here, I've used the SP1 for past 4/5 years and live by it. can not fault it. Little known fact- THESE WORK With CDJ2000 Nexus if you plug in the USB meaning you have loads of added functionally. from a CDJ USB stick set up
to clarify you mean these control the CDJ nexus? great find if that is the case!
I am mostly a vinyl DJ but was using Rane SL1 and Scratch live for DVS since 2007...until my ancient MacBook took a dump last week. Upgrading to SL3 and Serato DJ Pro now. After watching this video I'm buying an SP1 to get my face and hands out of my annoying laptop (not so ancient now) and twist some fiddly effects knobs with my hungry fingertips. Only wish I had a small touchscreen with the SP1 to view waveform and library (how does this not exist?)
(2 Technics 1200s. Rane Rotary Empath. tons of vinyl)
So this works with the SL3? Can't find this info anywhere
I got one of those, but because they connect to the NXS2 players.
You have to try this baby with Serato Studio!! 🔥🇲🇽🔥
Oh yes! Perfect companion!
Crossfader totally! I use it daily. The SP1 can be used in Serato Studio as a main controller, not as a secondary or add on controller as in Serato DJ Pro. The only things is that many buttons of the SP1 are not yet assigned to some functions in Serato Studio. Serato has not yet enabled Midi mapping in Serato Studio, which really sucks.
I love the sp1, but I can’t find any way of using it as a midi controller in DAWs such as Logic Pro, does anyone know to make this work??
Thing with these is you can bolt them onto an existing setup. whether a DVS user, CDJ user or a controller user. I myself own a DDJ-SB3. While you could say the SB3 does most of what the SP1 does, the SP1 in this case can act as pads for Deck 3 and 4, extra pads for deck 1 and 2 (think SB3 in hot cue mode, and SP1 in slicer mode), and act as a video controller. the FX section over the SB3 is better (individual select and level controls), also slightly better loop control on the SP1 vs the SB3. Final extra which is very worth it, is of course the sampler volume fader. For me it does make sense. Has anyone tried this with a controller in Serato? - One final thing to note, there is a TSI for traktor, its rekordbox native, serato official link controller, and works with serato Studio too. Price is definitely steep. At time of writing I've seen it for £260. £10 more than say the DDJ-SB3 / DDJ-400. Pioneer really needs to pitch this at around £120-£150, then they will fly off the shelves.
Is*
Still exists and is used by so many DJs today who don't like the weird "slide fx?" of the XP1
You could have saved yourself even more time by simply replying "I haven't watched this video"
Does anyone know if this would work with a DDJFLX4? Would love more control over Serato FX on the FLX4.
I think I'm goin to buy this one or the xp1 instead upgrading my first controller which is ddj wego 4. I kinda struggle with the controller on it self, because of it lack of features such as only 4 ques, only pad fx and oth.
@@omejesse8220 yeah I don’t use serato. Ddj wego 4 uses rb that’s y I mentioned the xp
Would one of these work with the latest rekordbox DJ DVS? Finding it quite hard to find a basic controller to cover the features of rekordbox dvs. Don't fancy mapping a kontrol x1 to it with no lights.
Yes it is supported according to Pioneers website
Yes it works awesome with rekordbox, even works with some cdj set ups no laptop
Hello I have a question, Will it be worth the investment if to use with a beginning controller like the SB3 Pioneer ?
To access certain features such as Pitch Play on the SB3 yes its good. However, the SB3 can access the majority of Serato DJ Pro features already!
Own it and DJM900 SRT till someone makes a 4 channel mixer with pads* it's my go-to.
* yes I'm aware of the Mixars Quatro... but has anyone ever seen or used one?
I have serato dj pro and a rane sl box....would the sp1 work with this configuration????
Yes, 1st set mine up with pair Cdj 1000 mk2's, Denon Ds1 & Serato so I didn't have to touch the computer. Moved it over to Rekordbox, plug & play already mapped. Tomorrow mapping it to Traktor to free up couple of hot cue buttons on X1 Mk2's to remap. Which is how I ended up here, looking for tips. Works with everything that plays out of a computer which is why I'd never sell it...
Luckily, I still have the sp1! I think that it will be extremely useful while using the pioneer ddj-1000 srt. This should allow the srt-1000 users to have control of the serato dj effects.. Anyone still waiting for the ddj-1000 srt to be in stock again in California?? Or know how I can get one with a decent waiting time?
Its biggest flaw: No RGB pads.
Cam you do the same video but about the ddj1000
Can be mapped to use with Recordbox?
I picked one up when Pioneer did a £159 special offer. That was a more reasonable price.
Effects post fader?
Hey I guys how can i use my DDJ SP1 without having to use my mixer. I have my Pioneer S11 in my other room and would like to use my DDJ SP1 on my other laptop. ANy info Thanks I have an older Serato SL3 box as well.
Can you advise what sampler pad would work well with Denon sc6000 as Denon have no sample pads
You'd need a stand alone sample unit unless you're thinking of using Serato? In which case the SP1 would be ideal
@@Crossfader what stand alone unit would be good as i only need it for sound effects
can I use this with Denon dj prime go?
Does it work with rekordbox? Its listed on their website, but unsure
Sure does. Plug and play
Yes,
I just purchased one two weeks ago.
I've always wanted an SP1 but it was a bit pricey so I decided to wait.
🤔 FYI it came with Serato Video
After a number of years of waiting on that price drop I then I began to hold out with the hope of an updated model with the same layout but with RGB pads, and flip controls. Like the Akai Afx and the Reloop Neon.
Latter came the DDJ-XP2 I was very disappointed because it didn't fit my style I prefer the effect banks lay out of the DDJ- SP1. There seem to be a shift in the way the effects are laid out on the newer controller. The 3 banks of effect control over each deck seems to be disappearing on hardware.
For and old device the SP1 hasn't dropped much in price for a 7 year old device. I plan to purchase another as a backup.
This is a good add-on for controllers like ddj 200 with very less functionality also it con be programmed for rekordbox
Very true!
Its native to rekordbox, plug and play
As an open-format DJ who relies heavily on effects for transitions between very different genres (e.g. House to DnB to Funk to Psytrance LOL) I wish I saw this before I bought the
XP2. The touch strip on the XP2 is clumsy and the unit is too big.
There is the XP2.
Yo... Just picked up a demo unit from a retailer for $59 !! A bargain!!
This device would be perfect with Serato Stems
to bad its discontinued DDJ-SP1
Can plz explain how to conect sp1 with cdjs
You can use the SP1 with CDJ2000Nexus2 by connecting the unit to the USB port on one of the decks that are linked
@@Crossfader So I can connect to any decks and can use both A & B decks?
@@Crossfader So this may sound like a strange one but can the pads be used to trigger hot cues gated ? You can only seem to do that if your CDJs are connected to a laptop via Rekordbox which, to me, seems to defeat the purpose of having standalone decks!
I use thus with my cdj850s but you have to be using reckordbox or serato with them. Its brilliant. You can pug straight into 2000s but otherwise any other cdjs need to be used with software.
And yes you can set hot cues and assign to different pads. 😀
Love it except for it doesn't turn off.. they recommend unplugging it which is kind of lame
I would just pick up the XP2.
DDJ-XP2 is an amazing piece, but its RGB pads are not velocity sensitive. One advantage the DDJ-SP1 has over XP2 as a MIDI controller.
The XP2's control over the effects isn't as well thought-out as the SP1's in our opinion
@@Crossfader sp1 better xp2?
SP1 os XP2?
If you use the effects heavily I think I would consider the SP1 over the XP2. It's too tricky (switching banks, individual wet/dry) to control the effects effectively on the XP2 - I do own it.
@@djtonyramirez730 already picked up the XP2 but thanks.
im the first to watch
