- In this oil painting tutorial I'll show you how to start a painting using blocking. Blocking in is the first step in defining the dominant tones and colours of the final painting.
I'm a professional landscape artist with over 20 years of experience in oil painting. My UA-cam Channel is dedicated to helping people learn how to paint in oils. I really believe that everyone can learn how to paint!

THANKS FOR WATCHING!
I've been painting for a while and I thought I was never going to get better ,but since I've been watching you I have improved my painting tremendously! I agree I could watch your painting over and over!!!!!!
I've found that blocking in with acrylic helps take my paintings to the next level. Thanks Michael for all your great painting demos.
Still hanging in here watching and learning from you. Wish you're share your Father with us some time. I hear him moving around and see him working too. I think it's marvelous that you both support each other works and I'm sure that is where you have learned much.
Great advice to block in with acrylic, thank you
Thumbs up to you, Michael. I like the abstract quality of the underpainting.
That's a great way to start Michael, never occured to me to block in with Acrylic,I was on the verge of giving them away as I never got on with painting with them, they just dried too quickly here in Southern Spain, even with a retardant gel,you are brilliant! A master in the making! Thank you so much.
Never seen anybody paint the way you can. If I had 1% of your skill and talent I would be a happy painter :)
Hi Michael! Your paintings are just awesome. Always scared of panting landscapes because of too much detailing, but your paintings just tempt to give them a try again. Wonderful work and great tips. :)
Thank you for sharing your process with us, Michael
I love hearing your painting philosophy as you describe
why you are doing what you do.
B.B.
Thank you so much for showing how to do this. I tried it for the first time, and it made a huge difference. It really helped with getting the colors in place and making painting so much more fun
Thank you so much for doing these videos! It really is a pleasure to watch you painting. You make it look so effortless. U are very talented!
I know I have a long way to go yet when my attempts at realism look worse than your blocking in. (lol) Thanks for sharing your process Michael, it's very much appreciated! :)
Fantastic paintings Michael, love the realism
Thank you. Very useful tips..
As always a great demo. Really enjoy watching a talented artist at work.
Wonderful to say the least! Thank you for having these lessons on UA-cam.
QUESTION: Have you finished a painting in acrylic? Why use oils afterwards? What is your overall opinion about the end result about an acrylic painting and an oil one.
I don't think you are going to like the answers to these questions. He talked (made fun of :P) about the acrylic paints in another video. Based on your questions, you are probably more comfortable with acrylic :).
Yes, at the moment I do feel little more comfortable with acrylics, however, I want to hear the most honest, direct and unedited opinion of why using oils is better. I have so much to learn!
I think Michael James Smith opinion will matter a great deal to me and will make me understand the difference between the 2 mediums. I only heard him once mention that he only likes to use acrylic for under painting. Is there a video in which he covers a little more on the difference between the 2 mediums?
Another great blocking in. Thank you! ( Music is lovely )
You are so inspiring !! I could watch your videos over and over and not get tired.i always wanted to paint .will have a go at it based on what I have seen you do. Your tips and pointers are so relevant .
You have gold in your hands.
Nice one Michael. Very useful as always. Keep them coming
Ninguém trabalha vegetação tão bem quanto o Michael. A técnica em si é simples, mas o resultado a nível de realismo é o mais fotográfico que já vi até hoje.
Thanks Mike another great tutorial. Have ever painted an Australian landscape?
This is helping heaps. Thanks again Roger
JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZUS---FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 40 YEARS OF WATCHING ARTIST'S ON TV, AND BUYING MANY ART BOOKS, TRYING TO FIND OUT WHY--ARTIST'S DO WHAT THIS GUY IS DOING, WHAT THE HELL FOR--AND--WHAT IS IT CALLED ????? NOW I HAVE THOSE ANSWERS---B-L-O-C-K-I-N-G. THANK YOU MIKE
I'm not very good at landscapes, so I'm hoping I will learn something from you 😊
my gosh this is why I subscribed you are simply AMAZING!!!!!!
I've been watching your videos since morning, I loved painting but I'm struggling of color mixing and detailing to make it realistic. New subscriber here
Your values are so bang on!
Estou maravilhada com suas aulas , aprendendo desde os primeiros vídeos, minha aula preferida de pintura.Obrigada de coração
Michael, you are the most brilliant artist on this planet! Thanks so much for sharing your techniques with us. Personal questions, Do you turn your phone off while working? Is your family allowed to come into the studio while your working? Thanks so much.
WHAT types of greens are you using? trees- vs- grass... green oxide? or sap green? or a mix of...? thank you so much for your tutorials. And what about the water (so dark, but is not black)?
Thank you for your videos. In one you talked about a website. I couldn't find it. Your work is wonderful.
It is such a pleasure to watch you paint Michael! Loved your video. Keep painting.
Gracias Michel gracias a tus vídeos estoy aprendiendo muchísimo 👍
você é meu professor preferido! Muito sucesso pra você!!!
You have beautiful tutorial on painting.
Great work. Thx 4 sharing. Appreciated !!!
Michael, felicitaciones, tus videos son de gran ayuda para las personas que nos gusta este hermoso arte.
I'm very glad you made this video. you don't use the same brushes for acrylic and oil do you? do you have an acrylic set and an oil set? is always a joy to watch you paint, keep it up
I am watching this video following checking my emails. I had one from the local arts council and it showed a 'painting' they were promoting locally. The finished work was not as good as this underpainting. How do some people get away with things like that?? your work is amazing, you must come over and do some of the scenery in Co. Kerry sometime you would love it. I would also like to thank you for posting your videos, you are the closest thing to an art teacher I have ever had and I am learning so much. I have never done landscapes as I thought they were too hard. I tried twice and failed dismally. So now I paint wildlife and horses, but you are tempting me to try again. ;-)
Thank you Scout, it really does seem as if the competition judges and the galleries are just making fools out of the buyers these days and seeing what rubbish they can get away with. Michael and people that put in the same amount of time and effort to produce something beautiful should be right at the top of the game. There is nothing skillful in dawbing colours on a canvas and calling it art.
The one I was referring to just had a few vertical strokes of dirty green and 2 horizontal ones of a grey colour, it was called puddles and people were raving over it! I was disgusted.
I stay away from art councils and so called top galleries, they wouldn't know a real painting if someone smashed it over their heads ;-)
see what I mean! So called art experts are just taking the piss now ;-)
I was reading your conversation and have also wondered how some see art as just a few splashes of color. I try not to say what art is or should be to other people but with paintings like you are referring too they make me feel more confident in my own skills. Even if a painting isn't that great it's still nice to know someone out there is trying and someone else wants it. I use to try so hard to achieve a "Great painting" and sometimes were better then others. I'm trying to take a new approach. Paint for me and for fun. The skill will come. If I manage to sell something I use the money for more supplies. After time spent you would think we would only get better. As for art I've seen that I found silly. The acrylic pouring is beautiful but it's it skill? Mix pour ave move around. Someone on a FB post wanted $1500 for one. lol
You are amaizine. Thnks for shering with us.
You realy teach me. .
Thanks
Excellent video thanks, I think it could be useful (for the noob like me) if you specify the consistency of the paint, the amount of medium in it. In any way a great job.
Super merci ça aide bien
You made this video years passed ! Don't know if you comment on older clips , but needed to know have you had problems with acrylic when blocking in and the oil on top ? Thanks for any feed back , Al
Great Art work
SEI BRAVISSIMO!
Oh thank you thank you! I was watching a few of your tutorials and came across this how to block!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I was wondering how can you paint with oils as they take a day to dry? Now I know the process I can get cracking on some paintings! I live in Sussex and in the past I have painted some nice paintings of beachy head.
Excelente demostración, muchas gracias.
Hi Michael, which tone do you use to block in. Do you use the middle tone or the dark tone of the certain areas. Great tutorial as usual
спасибо за Ваше творчество!!!это изумительно.
Hi Michael. Loving the videos. Do you still block in with acrylics going into 2018? If so, does the acrylic work well on Amphersand Artist Board? Newbie and just starting out 😀 so keen to sign up for your tutorials - many thanks
Wanted to ask.... I use acrylics so could I work on blocking in and glazing before going into details? Would it hinder the final look in anyway?
Another thing I noticed you tend to brush stroke vertically downwards, does that make any particular difference?
me encanta tus videos eres un mostruo pintando
Aleluia 💕 tava osso achar pintores falando sobre essa técnica
MIchael, you say the colors, "a bit of ivory black, a bit of cerulean blue and a touch of burnt umber" (~4:25) as you start the underpainting of the trees. Does that make your green without any yellow? Your input is appreciated.
He paints on construction panels coated with three coats of wall / ceiling paint sanded smooth. That's what moisture resistant MDF is and Dulux pure brilliant white matt for walls and ceilings.
that thumbs up at the end of the video made me laughed. good humour, sir.
thanks for sharing!
Excellent videos Michael. What is the process for color choice when blocking in?
I am using the Titanium White student version. I'm almost done using it, so I'm thinking about buying a new one. For other colors I bought artist paint. White is used a lot, but it is inexpensive and has a large capacity, so it is less burdensome. Is there a difference between the artist version and the student version?
Artist version has more pigment. Well worth the investment
I love the idea of your panels.
It seems that you don't worry about the board's edges ... is that right?
Can you tell us then how your finished paintings are mounted or how they are presented for sale please?
Thanks Michael .... love your videos.
As i knew
We dont have to worry about every 5 millimetre for every edge. We won't see them after the painting was mounted
Household emulsion? Well, as soon as I check the prices of white emulsion, I’ll be buying that instead of gesso if the emulsion is cheaper.
When I used to work in a supermarket yonks ago, I used to take the bottoms off the tomato boxes and use them for panels to paint on, painting on the smooth side because they were made of hardboard. I should have been using emulsion to prime them back then too if I’d known lol.
Update: I just checked and realised I could get matt white Dulux emulsion at £20 for 7Ltr as opposed to £17 for just 1Ltr of Gesso!
Any workshops planned? I'd like to attend if you do any in the next year or so
very good.
very beautiful.
that uses colors, those oil?
excellent as always,i have use acrylics for longer than i care to think about, brought uo with oils though.were do you get your photos from take them your self,or the internet
excellent M J S... i was wondering how i could achieve your STYLE..I tried my way thinking thats how it was achieved ...brrrr brrrr......thank you for the demonstration. I'll try a gain
Awesome videos. Have learned so much. I love the music !! What's the name of playlists
Hi Michael, Is your Dad still painting? We have a lovely painting by him of the River Wye. I am sure we will purchase one of your paintings one day. Darren
Awesome, thx
Awesome! Please do a follow up of the oil cover for this :)
Awesome! thanks so much for doing these videos.
vem dar aulas, aqui no Brasil!
Did you ever do a follow up video with oils?
Michael, where do you find inspiration for your paintings? Where do you get those pictures from? I find it quite difficult to find some subjects or photos for my paintings sometimes...
You have sketched in the drawing of what you will be painting. What did you use to do the sketch? Charcoal? Pencil? Paint? Something else? Thanks.
Hi Michael! Whose music did you use on this video? The moment when you started blocking in sounds nice as the rest of the sountrack! I plan to look them up on the internet. Thanks!
do you have a video showing your iPad setup...have tried some support arms and kind of work with iPad 12.9...yours appears more robust and solid...any suggestions help appreciative. thanks
Michael, mdf is very sensitive to moisture, what do you do to prevent your panels from bending? Especially when you use bigger panels?
Michael, I have read numerous places never to paint oil over acrylic because eventually it will peel, but you do this. Will you explain why?
Thank you for the speedy answer! Incredible gallery of videos! Thank you so much!
Where's the answer?
Mike, You said that you prime the canvas with White Dulux and then sand it? is that necessary?
I'm sorry for the beginner question. What is white dulux emulsion? Is it the same as gesso?
very good video. I'm subing
I like your paintins and you are same here
You said 3 coats of dulux emulsion were applied and papered prior to that blue acrylic...wouldn't that dulux emulsion peel off over time? Would it stick to the board for a long time?
Thanks for the clarification !
Excellent demo again Mike! But. might you consider displaying your reference photo as an inset so that we can follow your exact rendition? Thanks for sharing.
That was the very same question I was going to ask. Don't know if that is possible, but it would be nice. I could watch all these videos over and over again for hours. This is so entertaining and educational...Please keep posting them !!! Thanks so much !!!
The photo is past his left shoulder. He looks at it frequently while painting.
Fantastic, what material do you use as a canvas?
best regards!
that the material you use for painting. whether it is a canvas or something else:
Thanks!
Which acrylic do you use for blocking?
This is great stuff to watch when you're high, thx
Sir Michael I'm kinda curious if you had painted without a reference.
I see a lot of videos about "toning" a canvas before you paint. Is your blocking method a variation on that?
thank you so much for this. it helps me alot. I do not know where to find the waterproof Masonite board, any suggestions for what else I could use?
Спасибо.
If you had the photo reference next to it to be able to "study" it amd compare the steps etc..
Thsnk you 🌺
Not clear on what material/canvas you are painting, can you buy them like this or does it need some pre-treatment?
What is holding that panel to the larger board behind it? Do you just use double sided tape or something?
Also, I'm assuming that you have taken these reference photos so do you have copies that we could paint along to and for anyone out there can I take photos with my ipad and use them straight as a reference or is a camera better then just transfer them to ipad
Is it how it works? First acrylics and then oils on top of them?
What do you call the sketches you make before you start painting? I'm looking for a toturial on that, because I'm quite happy with my paint skills but not my drawing skills :)
good
Michael, is your preliminary pencil sketch a tracing off of the original photograph, or just an eyeball sketch onto the board?
Michael James Smith does the pencil 'muddy' your acrylics? I paint with just acrylic and use chalk pastel pencils but that is too messy. I will try colored pencil next because a pencil makes colors gray...
What type of gesso would be equivalent to the emulsion you use? I am in the USA and we don''t have that emulsion here...or at least by that brand name. Thanks
Hi Michael, I was just wondering what type/brand canvas you are using? I paint as a hobby and was curious if you are you priming the canvas with gesso paint alone vs. using titanium white? Thank you, Erin
Thank you, Michael. Lastly, when priming the canvas do you commonly use gesso paint or titanium white?
