Well you know all these other painters that say: "You don't want to paint every single leaf and blade of grass, who wants to spend their time doing that??"
      Michael: hold my beer
You do need a certain amount of neuroticism to enjoy this process, but Michael seems to love it :)

Great lesson but I laughed out loud when you said "There's no reason you can't do this too!" I can't make reflections in the water like that....I only know the Bob Ross way and you don't do that - it looks like a true reflection. Awesome - I've been watching you all evening at work.

    • @evhwolfgang2003
      @evhwolfgang2003 8 років тому +5

I've been doing the wet-on-wet aka the "Bob Ross technique" for years. Without formal art school training, I think its a great base, but I don't see why more sophisticated techniques can't be incorporated. I believe the Bob Ross paint is going to be much thicker than anything MJS is using here (I mean look how little paint he has to put out for a large painting). Maybe keep some of Bob's 'liquid clear' or some linseed oil out for dipping in to thin it up for those details. Also, nothing wrong with painting the basic painting in Bob's style, letting it dry a bit, then touching it up with a liner brush. Maybe we'll never be fine artists, but we can still have fun trying :)

Thanks a ton for all the great videos. I had an accident thar messed my back up and I can't really paint anymore but watching your video sort of fills in that empty spot. You're the best! I'm trying to understand what kind of board you're using. It sounds like "green board" that's used here in the states to enclose bathrooms (gypsum covered with water-resistant green paper, e.g.) Or am I way off??

I really enjoy your videos and your methods and way of teaching. I was really shocked when you said that about only having 12 subscribers, I watched again and sure enough, that's what you said. I was really wondering how that could be, I've seen middle aged housewives and their husbands painting on paper plates and they had hundreds or even thousands of subscribers.
When I came back for the third viewing in a row, I looked to see how may subscribers you have and it was not 12, not any more, it's now 409,000! WoW!
    that's more like it!
I have been trying to learn to paint and while I enjoy experimenting, sometimes I can't find the technique on my own. as a life long doodler I had no roadblocks that more practice didn't cure, but painting can sometimes stop me dead in my tracks, I don't know the tools or the techniques to do some of the things I try with the paints which I didn't as a doodler.......I''m watching this video again because I am trying to paint grass, a meadow, I knew from Bob Ross that his "magic fan brush" was one way to get those blades to appear, but.......I have fan brush problems, the bristles clump and if I put the paint on thick it's messy and looks like paint not grass.
When I try to thin the paint down, I'm lucky if I get one stroke with enough colour to leave little stripes but they look like I made them with a dinner fork.
So, I can figure out that one of my problems is loading the brush and another is the consistency of the paint.
I don't know if you have any videos about this, about the quality of the brushes and paints you're using to get the results you want, those are the results myself and well over 400,000 other people hope for too.
I do buy cheap supplies because I'm learning, but now I'm thinking I might be better off with a couple of higher quality tools and paints and I could just take care of them so they last longer.
I'm wondering if the fan brush should have a certain bristle type or count? When I first saw them and they're being used for grass and leaves, I assumed I should just grab some flimsy cheap ones and throw them away after I use them, because I imagined that fine hairs spread thin would be the best thing for what I want to do.
That's not right at all, because my fan brushes look more like little hands with four or five fingers than a fan and they leave ugly strokes when they leave strokes at all.
    Help! please.

the quest for realism in art is a worrying trend . it looks nice but leaves us wondering what happened to the subconscious flare for uniqueness , Art took a very strange turn after 1970 , A sort of mechanical unemotional turn , We accept some very strange artist work as credible , almost as if we are scrambling to find sense in the world , we think they have an answer to our lives , they do not . Pablo Picasso was a far more deeper thinker , rejecting the physical obsession for the subconscious struggle of humanity . He painted the inner life . I wonder what is going to be next in the world of art .

The grass on the far bank there I'd like to learn how to paint that. I get a request from a lot if South Texas friends, and the ground looks mostly like that. I struggle painting patchy grass.

I have a question about painting grass. I am beginer. Started painting only 2 months ago but vegetation is still big problem for me. When I start painting grass as you showed on 2:42 with acrylic and while it is wet it has the same nice color as in this video but when it dries it gets much darker and there is almost no contrast with 1st layer. So what am I doing wrong here?

Wish I could tell what brush you used. I tried this technique last night but even my small brush I think was still to thick.
