  • In this episode of Red Dot Forum Camera Talk, Leica experts David Farkas and Josh Lehrer will be taking a look at the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH, which was introduced earlier this month. Now one of the highest performing lenses in the M lineup, the 35mm APO-Summicron also has a new trick - close focusing down to 0.3m. We're super excited to share our thoughts and test results on the brand new 35 APO. See how the new APO stacks up against the standard 35mm Summicron-M ASPH, the 35mm Summilux-M ASPH, and even the 35mm APO-Summicron-SL.

    Excellent and comprehensive presentation, though I would like to see the M lenses described in terms of M gear -- exclusive use of the M11 body and the M11 monochrome, comparisons to other M lenses -- rather than so much SL2 crossover in which I question whether M11 shooters have any interest whatsoever. For example, rather than going on and on about the SL2 and the SL lenses, I would have rather seen the time spent with the M11 and the M11 monochrome and on comparing the 35APO F/2 to the 1.4FLE, the revered v4 summicron and the vintage, immortal v1 Summicron 3.5/1:2. I get it, you love the SL2, but I doubt any M11 shooter will be interested in the heavier, larger camera or its much heavier, larger lens line up. The presentation was by far the best on the net I have seen. Keep up the excellent and informative work. There is no substitute for anecdotes and empirical observations. I personally found all the charts of little interest. Never have taken a picture of a brick wall. Love the architecture, the street shooting, the beautiful landscapes, colors, use of bokeh, composition and so on. Exquisite examples and professional photography advice. Really appreciate all the hard work you put in to making such a difficult project run so smoothly and effortlessly. Many thanks!

      Interesting idea. I think that while the S35 is a wonderful lens, the APO SL would come out on top in terms of absolute performance. The S lenses are more of a balance between the biting sharpness of the SL optics and the naturalness of M glass.

    19:25 I assume this is in readiness of weather sealed M11, perhaps. And the hood looks like it is also designed to be used in mild/average adverse weather conditions as it is more closed for protection. I would be less inclined to use a UV filter to protect the lens with that hood on.

    As impressive as the APO is, I preferred the FLE for picture making. It was close enough stopped down to landscape apertures that nobody would notice a difference, but gives 2x more light gathering ability for when it’s required. Overall, more versatile. Was I seeing slightly more saturated color out of the FLE as well? Either way, both great lenses but FLE is where I’d put my $. Both cream of the crop optics. I have watched this video several times ...another great lens episode! I was lucky to purchase a 35mm APO Summicron lens earlier this year and am loving the wide angle detail that it renders and still discovering it's other fine attributes. Curiously, in the new updated Camera Raw 14, I was hoping they might provide a "lens profile" for this lens, but as far as I can tell, it has NOT yet been included. Is there a lens profile in Camera Raw that you might suggest using for this lens in the meantime or is better to make manual adjustments assuming some are needed until Adobe includes it?
    As always, thank you for your time and replies.

    and the camera would be great for travel. To my surprise I take the Leica with me more then my D850. What a great camera. After seeing the images coming out D-Lux , my neighbor went to the Leica store with me and she came home with a black D-Lux 7. Now she loves her Leica also. Could you do a Camera talk on the D-Lux and all the features that can be set up in this camera?

    A question slightly of topic. I’m already invested in the L mount system, S1R, and want to bridge into the Leica system by purchasing a Leica L mount lens initially. I’ll probably play safe initially with a 50 or 35 but would also consider a short zoom lens. However, i’m slightly caught up in the ‘which one’ dilemma, any guidance would be most welcome as a nube to Leica.

    Excellent video again, guys. Quick check, were the sharpness tests done on an M10 or SL2?
    Some M-lenses behave better on SL’s than others (e.g. corner sharpness), and generally the bigger the lens, the better SL-performance? Wondering how that is for the APO-35, which is quite small.

    • @RedDotForum
      @RedDotForum  3 роки тому

      All of our testing was done using the SL2 as it is the most cross-compatible with all lens options and very accurate for focusing.

    I just wish Leica UK would hurry up and deliver to my dealer, where I am #1 on the queue for the APO. I actually prefer the older Summilux ASPH to the FLE with the huge proviso "if you can find a good one".

      @@johnkasianowicz6536 Purple fringing from very hidh edge contrast. Seems to be a characteristic of the FLE lenses, 50 ASPH Summilux etc. The lower edge contrast of the earlier ASPH 35 Summilux avoids this. The problem is that many of them have appalling aperture shift and it takes a lot of looking to find a good one. For some reason, the chrome/brass body lenses seem better than the black alloy ones. For the same reason I prefer my 50 Summilux III SE to the the 50 ASPH Summilux I used to have.

      28 and 35 are definitely different focal lengths that will offer unique perspectives. Both lenses offer exceptional quality. The 28 is obviously wider and has a stop faster aperture. The 35 APO is unique with it's close-focus ability and is physically more compact. Just depends what you're after.
