Thanks guys, for another great show. Much appreciated, even when I usually don’t join live from Europe.
Last week, I purchased a pre-owned SL2-S in mint condition at the Leica Store. Next to my SL2, which I use mostly in the studio together with the 50 Lux-SL and the 24-90, I wanted a travel-friendly combination. So, I looked for the new Summicron-SL 50, which I briefly compared to the Lumix S 50. Indeed the Leica lens indeed feels more ‘refined’ compared to the Lumix, which is by the way, not ‘plastic’, but Thermal Stable Composites (TSC). 😉
Nevertheless, I opted for the Lumix version on my SL2-S. The price difference is huge. We’re talking €400 (or in my case, even €300) for the Lumix and close to €2000 for the Leica version. You’ll be very hard-pressed to see differences in real-life final images when you compare them side-by-side. At least I was, as a professional photographer after some quick edits in Capture One. If you really want something better, you have to go APO-Summicron SL, with the accompanying price tag, size and weight. Of course, until end of April you can also opt for the kit, to safe you the €1,000 (or $1,300).
The Lumix S lenses work great on Leica bodies. Firmware updates are as easy as with Leica SL lenses and the IBIS works as good. All menu features apply, except for one. The focus mode MF in the menu is grayed-out, since it relies on the AF/MF switch on the lens. Consequence is that the traditional back-button focus works a bit different. For the Lumix S lenses you have to set the camera to AFs in the menu and then use the joystick push for back-button focusing. The tricky part is that while you push the joystick, it focuses, but the focusing action isn’t removed from the shutter button. It works, but it’s a bit tricky when you’re used to back-button focusing with the Leica SL lenses. I thought this was good to know for potential buyers.

lol finally someone is talking about these lenses. They been out and I have not seen no review or mentions about it. The only thing I saw was the release video back in February. Cheers from Bulgaria
I had a chance to ask Mr. Peter Karbe about the lenses and he told me that the lens diagram is based on the S lenses from Panasonic but they improved and modified individual lenses inside and then also about mounting the individual lense, tighter tolerances and materials are different. That is the reason that the mtf curves are a little bit different also. I was also wondering if its just a repackaging but it seems there is some difference to the other lenses. Now it comes down to how much those changes actually show up in the pictures and how much the picture quality is improved from that. I would want to test those lenses also before deciding to buy them. Hope that helps with your decisions too.
Hi Nephesus, thanks for this comment, I wonder too if it's worth it to switch from my Lumix 50 to the Leica one, I know that one has a plastic barrel and the other one metal one. But for me the difference has to be in the final image quality first.
I finally chose to keep the 50 Lumix and buy the Lumix 35mm 1.8 too. The image quality is similar and to doesn’t worth the extra money

Another very informative video. Thanks, guys! I shoot an SL2 and a CL, using both the 24-70 ƒ2.8 Leica "kit lens" and my Leica CL lenses on the SL2 (getting a nice 20MP file). I also shoot Sigma full-frame Contemporary lenses on both cameras. All very very good glass if not great glass. Spending nearly two grand for a non-APO 50mm seems rather extravagant, given the fact that Sigma has a new 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for $900. Decisions...decisions...
As a wildlife photography enthusiast I'm very excited of the new 100-400mm. Can't wait for an episode on that lens.

I wasn't expecting to, but I like the idea of an addition to a travel kit with the SL zooms + the 35 SL Summicron.
Close focus of the 35 Summicron-SL ASPH is the hook for me.....
Picked up a copy of the 50mm today. Done a few test shots in various lighting when driving across Norway today. The lens look like a solid performer. Super snappy AF, soft bokeh and virtually no fringeing.
A very nice walk about lens as a compliment to my 24-90mm.

Sorry I missed the big anniversary event. I'd been planning to come down from Orlando, but had last-minute eye surgery, so wasn't able to drive. Fortunately, my eye is now back to normal and I can take photos again. Guess I'll have to wait for the 15th anniversary gala. I'd love to come visit you sooner, though. Just tell me when my 35 FLE2 shows up and I'll come grab it in person! 🙂
Super useful episode .Film M ,CL and SL2s but no native lenses for the sl2s at present (apo`s to big and heavy). Instead I use the CL lenses on the SL2s esp the 35 and 60.These new SL lenses a look like a good solution .
Does anyone have an idea if these will work on the T and CL camera bodies? I’ve thought about a new SL2s but I’m still on the fence. I can’t tell if the SL2s and it’s lenses are just high price, rebranded Panasonic products. If I’m paying that kind of money, it sure better not be someone else’s items. Also, great job by these two for doing a review on these lenses. I’ve been looking around and have found zero reviews on these lenses. Glad to see someone finally giving them a look over
Yes these new lenses work on the CL too no problem. See my Flickr for Lumix 50 version on CL and SL. I'll share my well overdue video soon as I used the new 35 Cron this week too

On another note, one question from a viewer triggered me: what about a 40mm lens? Now obviously, Leica won’t squeeze in a 40-APO next to the 35 and 50, but…what if Zeiss/Cosina were to adapt their Batis lenses to L-mount? Their minimalistic design and the ‘matt black’ barrels would be a terrific match with the SL cameras. I’m not too impressed by the 18 and 25mm, but the 40/F2 (with its extreme close focus), the 85 and the 135 are all very good lenses with the legendary Zeiss contrast and colors. If Zeiss/Cosina were able to keep them around $900-1000, these lenses would be a great addition to the L-mount catalogue. Just saying…
I wish you had a comparison for the 50mm Summicron with the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN... Any chance that you would to a such test?
Hope L mount make the same hotshoe, like Sony version, user can use battery-less small hash, EVF, Mic, even 5/7 inch display.
Very excited to see Wetzlar realize the strength of their L-mount Alliance with this collaboration. Certainly these new Summicron-SLs will be popular for those Leicaphiles that appreciate superior build quality and don't need the APO performance. I am left wondering whether the actual optical package is being "Made in Portugal" or just assembled by Leica with Lumix-S glass. I agree with David that the 35 ASPH will be great for video work.
Stupid Question: Can these lenses be manually focused anytime (even if the camera is set to AF or BBF)? I ask because they mentioned the lack of an AF/MF switch on the len barrel and say that function needs to be set in the menu.
If you use the MF setting then you can use back button focus as well as the focus ring to do what you’re effectively talking about
Did you gentlemen ever get around to testing the Summicron-SL 35mm ASPH. on the CL? Very curious how it performs vs the Summilux-TL 35mm ASPH.
David, do you feel you get the “Leica look” from this 35mm Summicron? Similar to M 35mm Summicron?
Tamron has a 35-150 2.0-2.8 but for eMount and Z mount only. I wished Leica would come up with one in L mount in the same “prime quality over all zoom range” like the 24-90 2.8-4. That I purchased even preordered immediately.

I just bought the SL 50mm ASPH from Leica Singapore 3 days ago and took some portraiture on SL2-S Reporter and the CL. The bokeh looks better on the SL2-S. The crop sensor is not really comparable to the full-frame SL2-S.
mind blown that the SL APOs are superior to the M equivalents. so i'd be better off getting the SL lenses and an adaptor to use on the M?
The sigma f something lol that camera is not for the Leica man but it is fantastic for M Mount glass
Okay guys I have some comments mainly concerning the beginning of the video.
About "the Elephant" in the room the following.
First of all there is a difference between MANUFACTURING and ASSEMBLY, and that is what you are NOT making clear.
Are MOST of the parts (LENSES IN PARTICULAR) manufactured in Germany and transported to Portugal to be assembled over-there (due to lower wages) or are MOST of the parts (INCLUDING LENSES) also MANUFACTURED in Portugal.
Then, like stating the obvious, you explained that not all parts in the lens are manufactured by Leica, which is about true for almost all complex products (think cars, refrigerators, mobile phone etc.).
What I (we) want to know, how much (%) of those lenses is Leica made in comparison to the Apos.
To be more clear (when is it still an original Leica lens besides Leica putting his name on it)
Let's be honest, the 2000 dollar/euro price tag has to find its way somewhere.
I understand that you guys have to sell those lenses but my comments above are NOT answered in CLEAR TERMS in your video.

I'm very sorry but the autofocus test wasn't snappy at all. In fact it was pretty slow plus it first focused behind the bear and then back on it. Which of course is to be expected from -and here I say it- Panasonic level contrast detect auto focus. And that's ok if you're can live with that but you can't sell it as fast autofocus.
