Faceting gemstones: cutting a huge gem 2

  • Watch as i cut my biggest gemstone yet. Im cutting boro silicate glass in a round shape. The finished gem is 368 carats and 48 mm in diameter. Warning: this material could be hazardous to your health when being cut .
    The cutting laps i used were as follows 100, 260, 360, 600, 1200 grit plated diamond laps. The prepolish laps were lightning lap resin 3000, and 8000 grits. I also used a zinc gearloose lap with 3000 diamond. The polish laps used were lightning lap cerium oxide and aluminum oxide laps, and gearloose creamway lap.
    being this material is glass and a hardness of 5.5, i had some problems in getting scratch free polished facets at times.

      Hi john, and thanks .Yes this was difficult just for the size aspect of it. I spent about a month off and on working on it. After i finished and looked it over i would have been better off i think to have cut it in a portuguese cut.

    Man I am in such awe of your skill and I only ask this out of curiosity, but what were those little seemingly subsurface scratches on the bottom of the gem when it's rotating on the rotating presentation platform at the end? 23:16 it's pretty apparent, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. So I keep thinking as I watch these videos: If one of you guys were to produce and then market a tiny little treasure chest filled with relatively cheap but pretty gem stones, I'd pay quite a lot of money for it. Maybe different sizes, different qualities up to very expensive versions with better gems and maybe tiny little gold coins or something lol.
      There are quite a few of us IT nerds with expendable income who would absolutely love the idea of owning our own little actual treasure chest with actual treasures. You could market it to gamers and collectors.

      After you get the facets cut to the 600 grit stage you must prepolish at 3000 or 8000 grit. You can buy precharged laps here: www.shop.lightninglap.com or you can buy copper or zinc laps that you apply diamond paste to. Once you have prepolished the stone i use a lightning lap cerium oxide lap to final polish.
      The zinc and copper laps can be purchased here: www.gearloose.com. happy cutting.

    Watched this video about 3 times now for reference and it's been a huge help! 2 questions: Did you use a jig to set your dop stick and let the glue harden? Also what kind of dop stick are you using? Thanks in advance!

    • @tennpikr74
      @tennpikr74  4 роки тому +1

      hello, i did use the jig while the glue was setting up, i used a cone dop as the sphere is round and it would work the best. After i slid the moving part of the jig together to touch the sphere , i have to keep moving the whole thing and turning it so that the glue wont run off or to one side until it set s up, usually about 2 min. or less and it stops flowing. after that i mixed up more glue and built it up around the dop. i didnt want to take any chances for it coming loose.

    You say that you ran into several problems with this "gem" because it was a 5.5 on the Mose scale.
    Is that because the "gem" is to soft or to hard? I know the Mose scale goes from 1-10, with diamond being 10 and ruby/sapphire being 9, and most steels bring in the 5-6 range.

      Yes , not a true gemstone. it is virtually worthless. I did this purely for the challenge of cutting a very large piece. Im just used to calling them all gemstones. I had to choose the glass as anything natural or a precious material would be unobtainable in this size or astronomical in price.
      I guess i might have been able to find a piece of cz but then it would have cost at least $100 . This piece only cost about $8.00.

    just a quick tip for dop transferring: when remobing the first dop on such a large specimen you can simply take it to the saw and cut off the top of the dome where the dop is epoxied. Then just heat up the removed head without worrying about heat transfer to the other dop. Probably save 15 minutes.

    • @tennpikr74
      @tennpikr74  4 роки тому

      Right , I actually did that on the the large portuguese cut I did last year . on this one it didn't seem too much excess material to bother with, plus you have to be careful not to scratch the pav. or polished girdle when you take it to the saw. I just did another large Portuguese quartz but this time I did a better preforming job so the crown end wasn't as big. thanks for commenting.

      @@garrettragsdale4826 hello, i do clean the stone somewhat after sawing but im not extra careful since when i start the grinding im always using a very coarse disc so i never have had contamination on those discs that i know of.
      congrats on designing your own gem cut. one of these days i may try also. thanks for your comments. do you use any computer programs for designs?

      Your lap must be a newer one . My 260 is well worn but still works ok for this material. Once a lap has worn down it will start leaving a smoother finish.
