  • Today we compare and contrast the 1998 Mercedes W210 E300 Turbo Diesel and the 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI. Both are great cars and there are pros and cons to each. Which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

    Two best diesel engines mercedes ever done!From both this engines me make 500+ hp.And power limit of both still unknown!

      there are now examples of the om606 with over 1000hp that have the original engine block but other connecting rods and pistons, mostly with a holset hx 55 and self-made 10 - 14mm diesel pumps

      @@christianforster5176 nobody built yet 1000hp om606 .Most powerful is 800hp(at dyno) for now.

      @@IvanovSuperturbodieselProjects no i have seen one dyno with 996hp, this car isnt on the internet and the car doesn't drive anymore because after approx. 10 runs the engine blew up

    Om606 is such a crazy good motor. Especially if you swap on a mechanical pump.

    Our 2006 W211 has 290,000 + miles so far. We are going for 400,000. Sort of a miracle car.

      I really like our W211 as well. It's now just a couple hundred miles from reaching 300k.

    i have swapped om648 from 211 to my sprinter van,it's difficult 😞 to swap but once done,my sprinter van rocks and rolls,it's got that magic power uphill,amazing engeneering

    i have been driving a w210 with the OM606 for a year now but with significantly more power ( i drive it with a borgwarner s200 and a 7.7mm diesel pump from dpuk along with its billet manifold and billet intake manifold and water methanol injection ( the car has 450 hp on the crankshaft and that for 80,000 km and on the complete engine are almost 420,000) ) and this engine has never had any problems and does not give the impression that anything is coming soon. By the way, the car has been running on vegetable oil for 3 months because a liter of diesel currently costs over €2.40 here

    It'd be a shame to get rid of the om606, tuning potential is insane compared to the om648

      It's true, they are super tunable. I've noticed a lot of these cars getting bought up just to strip the engines out for swaps.

    I’d say give a another year or two and a lot of people will have conversions kits to fit a ZF 8 speed to both. I know there are some already running with it but not a lot of information.

    If God decided to sponsor a diesel engine a fully tuned 606 would be sainted! In the UK we had the OM648 powered W211 from 2003-05

      I had a 2001 W210 E320 with the OM648 for a couple of years. it had about 330 000km on it and ran flawless...

    Getting 41 winter and 47 summer on my 05 E320 CDI. Mile high and a quarter million miles. Would it run wvo? I ran my 82 CD turbodiesel on it with mods.
    Love to see a pad replacement vid.

      Not sure about WVO with the common rail injection on the OM648. I've run 100% biodiesel in the OM606 without modification and it runs perfectly.

      I'd recommend no more than 20% biodiesel, it runs fine in the 606 because of the injection pump. However in the 648 the injectors shoot at a higher pressure and it is very easy to clog it up. That goes with any common rail diesel though

      I like them all! I think for longevity, probably the W124, although getting parts is harder all the time. The W210 has the best ride, and the W211 has the best features and most power. Also, the W211 has been the most trouble free for us!

      I have owned all three and agree.
      I do wish I never sold the 95 124 606 car.
      Lots of 2 year only cars in the USA!

    The w211 was actually released in May 2002. I have the 20th vehicle to roll off production in May 2002 (E270 cdi)

      Yeah, in the US they were 2003 model year and the diesel was 2005 and 2006 only.

    I still prefer the W210 bodyshell (exterior & interior dashboard instrumentation design etc.) but with updated engines & air-suspension from W211. I never like the idea of changing too drastically the appearances from 1 generation to the next just to look 'different' as function must prevail over form.
    e.g. the black-white bar fuel gauge in W211 is horrible, way too difficult to read clearly compared to the classic proven swing-needle style with the amber colour needle set against warm-white character lighting...that's way more ergonomically superior presentation. As far as i'm concerned, they should have continued such old-school gauge style even for the newest models but of course nowadays done virtually via simulating the analogue gauge via high resolution graphics on modern flat panels instead.

      The W210 chassis had horrible rust issues with the new 'eco' water based paints. Ruined my otherwise mint condition 1996 E320 with the smooth M104 inline 6. I loved that car...

    I liked my om648 so much I ended up buying another. Also have a 87 wagon with the older om603--need to do some work to get that on the road. Wouldn't mind picking up a om606 to complete the trinity. (also have the om642 v6, but it's been a letdown with issues so about to get rid of it).

      No not really. But it is in a bigger vehicle (r class) with AWD so it's a different feel than the E class rwd om648

      @@danielmorgan190 i like the idea of w221 diesel, but i have tried some modern smaller diesels in cla and A class 2018, and they didn't seem to be as aggressive as a 2011 golf diesel i drove, infact they were pretty flat and boring. i worry i would get a flat feeling diesel if i got w221 as emission regulations seem to have stopped motors getting going at wide open throttle.

      well the 05-06 w211 with the om648 is a fun car to drive. It has a lot of kick for a fairly big diesel car. And will go 80-85 all day long at 35mpg @@raycroal

    What you think, is om613 good engine? It's 3.2 liter diesel engine, you probably know it😁

      From what I understand it's a good engine and very similar to the OM648, but we didn't get that version here in the states.

    9:40 I have a CLK-220 CDi rocking an OM-646 and the injection pressure is 2,000 bars.
    11:01 Yeah swirl-flaps $uck but luckily my 646 does not use that tech. Egr is the culprit in killing the flaps, exhaust heat plus all the gunk/sludge from egr will destroy the mechanism.
    5:04 Also have an old 190-D with an OM-601 and the injection pressure is 130 bars(Lol), I think the OM 601 602 and 603 series (ala your sold W-124) differ from the OM 604 605 and 606 series(ala your W-210) in that the former have 2 valves while the latter have EDC (Electric Diesel Control) 4 valves per cylinder.
    Btw there's a W-210 E-290 Turbo Diesel that uses the old 1980's OM-602 5-cylinder bored and stroked from 2.5l to 2.9l with direct injection as opposed to 602's original in-direct.
    And also a W-202 C-200 Diesel using a 1980's OM-601,
    am guessing both were marketed to folks who were accustomed to the old non-electronic Merc diesels that were virtually indestructible, am sure your W-124 agrees.
    Heck I've seen 601 and 602's running on cooking oil with no modifications at all.

      In Europe they never discontinued them, just switched from i6 to V6. I had a 2001 E320 with the i6 cdi...

      @@Munakas-wq3gp only om648 E320 CDI has i6 Diesel. And they switched that to om642 V6 after 2006 with the facelift w211.

    Між ними був іще om613, але там головка блока циліндрів погана, неправильно геометрія постелі розподільних валів, om606, або іще "the best end" останній форкамерний дизель мерседес для легкових авто, і він просто богоподібний, om648 в свою чергу це 613 з вилікуваними дитячими хворобами, зокрема й по голові, і паливна апаратура там дещо інша, на мою суб'єктивну думку це кращий дизельний двигун мерседес із common rail, також має величезний потенціал для тюнінгу
