I sold my perfect electric car to buy the best turbo diesel car Mercedes-Benz ever made. This car was so great that the U.S. Government wouldn't allow it to be sold here after just 2 years. What replaced this was the ultimate demise of the diesel passenger car for Mercedes-Benz USA.

All of you saying the om617/602/603/606 engines are superior, I ask you why, other than nostalgia? is it reliability? because the i6 OM648 is every bit as reliable as the previous generations, and doesn't suffer from head gasket issues or early 90's electronics issues as the older IDI engines did. its also more fuel efficient and much more powerful.
i assure you my handle doesn't come from lack of experience.
    Ive owned an 83 om617(T) 300SD, 86 om602(NA) 190D, 91 om602(T) 300D, 99 0m606(T) E300D. i did all my own maintenance on all of them.
I Own a 2005 E320 CDI, I've daily driven the car for the last 3 years and done ALL of my own maintenance.
With the proper tools and the balls to work on the car yourself rather than taking it to the dealership, it is better in nearly every possible way than the previous generation Mercedes Benz diesels.
And that's in no way knocking the older diesels. They all had their place in history and most were innovative technological marvels in their time as well. But when it comes to value, reliability, longevity, ride quality, safety, features, styling, rust prevention, paint quality, it's REALLY hard to beat an om648 E320 CDI.
Now, Cue the naysayers that have never owned or driven a CDI. XD

Absolutely agree, it doesn't make sense. Why would you make a new engine worse ? it's illogical and that is why manufacturers don't listen to people and look at their data. Most people think based on emotion, not logical sense. The old diesels have 1 thing - reliability. The OM642 has more power (which means more fun and safer), quieter, smoother, better sound, better economy and it is reliable enough. Easy to work on. I am not going to drive a 70hp car because I don't want to replace a sensor from time to time.

h3xd3m0n absolutely. The om648 is nearly identical to the om606 when It comes to internals. It may actually be stronger since it puts out consiterably more power stock.

My family owns 3 of the 320 CDI's but the V6, the engine is known as OM642!
I changed the ECU on all of our cars from 224hp to about 270hp and they are running and running and running, even about 300.000km, which is about 187.000miles.
If you got any questions about Diesel engines just leave me a message.

I recently bought my first w211 e320 cdi, and yes, it is the in line 6 diesel engine. 1 month ago when I bought it, it was 207.500 kms, and I drove the car on wheels from Germany, Munchen to Timișoara, Romania, where I also live. Now it has 210.000 kms and the car is totally insane. I mean yes, there are only 204hp but the 500 NM torque on low revs (aprox. 2000 rpm) is just crazy. Imagine the car back on those days! Mine is a 2003 mode, the Avantgarde version, with parktronic and also airmatic suspension. Also lucky to have Harman Kardon sound sistem, electric and ventilated seats with memory on the passager side, and half wood steering wheel. PS: Not sure why yours (on burnout parth of the video) made so much smoke, mine does not at all, not even on 4.300 rpm... Sorry for gramatics, not a native :) !

I have a diesel car too. Not a fancy Mercedes, but a 2007 Toyota Auris hatchback. Auris is about the same size or a little bigger than Toyota Yaris/Vitz or Corolla. Usually these types of cars come with a 1.6L diesel at 90 hp, but my car has the 2AD-FHV engine; a 2.2L diesel at 177 hp and 400NM of torque. I chip tuned it to 235 hp and 500NM. I also removed the AGR valve and a few other parts that are known to clog the engine with sot and hampers performance.
This engine is the same engine that you find in different large Toyotas, such as the Avensis (slightly smaller than the Camry), Rav4 and Lexus IS 220D. So it's a fun car to drive and it feels a bit like driving a small fishing boat with a nuclear propulsion system in it.
I can cruise up steep hills at 1500 RPMs as if it was nothing. It's no race car, but I can get it to go 0 to 100 kph in about 6 seconds if I launch it in second gear (I don't do that and don't reccomend it in any car) and the top speed is about 220 kph.
No problems had with the engine so far, in the 11 years it has existed. Some problems with the car though, such as rust as the car is manufactured in England and I live in Norway where they salt the snowy roads. Other than that, an amazing car.

Fixed all three and kept the car up to 170,000 miles without a problem, with 55mpg on a run and very quick when I needed it. I loved the car, but sold it for a 2009 e320cdi estate, which is sublime and very well specced. Better balanced, better fuel efficiency and with a remap, just as powerful. Having also worked at a main dealer up until last year, I can verify everything you say about the OM642.
Luckily for us in Europe, we also have a plentiful supply of W210 with the OM613 engine which is also a great combination and available here in the UK for pennies.
My daily driver for the last 7 years has been a 2004 W220 S320CDI and it has been flawless. 50mpg on a good run is not difficult. Prior to this car, my longest lasting daily driver was 2 years. Of all of the Benzes we've owned (W126, W123, W124, W210, and now a W202 for our son, W204 and R170 for us), our 2 favorite Mercedes were diesels. A 1986 300SDL (fantastic W126 chassis and one helluva car) and a 1998 E300TD (W210 chassis and our favorite car ever). Alas, both of these diesels were totaled, but no one was injured in either situation. The only things holding me back on a W211 2005-06 diesel Benz is the early reports of the chassis having issues since they shared some parts with Chrysler (or not). However, it's the engine and tranny which are more important (at least to me).

    • @carbonfiber492
      @carbonfiber492 5 років тому +1

Not too familiar with merc diesels I’ve worked on a few of them but I don’t know them as much as I do about Vw diesels
In general diesels are no harder to work on and don’t require special tooling specifically for diesels unless you are getting into rebuilding injectors and pumps (which you would need for petrol engines anyway) obviously most German cars do require special tools but that’s just german cars in general
As far as emissions stuff goes the dpf and egr isn’t as much of a concern as it’s made out to be BUT diesels need to be driven to burn off all the soot that collects so if your only gonna do short drives go a petrol car which is also where the real savings come in they don’t like start stop traffic they like open highways for example my Passat was sitting around 14l per 100km in traffic the other day where normally on the same run it would be closer to 5-6l per 100km
The other issue is all the extra sensors that are fitted especially on newer diesels if you want to do your own maintenance you need a good computer not just torque pro. For Vw I’d used ether vagcom or e-Odis as both will allow coding of injectors and help to find sensors that have failed rather than just giving a generic code
As far as injectors go they are usually pretty good in saying that on newer diesels they do have to be coded into the system and are very expensive compared to older style injectors

Wujek Mike it is. I've owned every Diesel variety from Benz since 1983 -2008, except the rod bender 603, and the CDI is without a doubt the best. It's not just the engine though, the om648 pared with the late model 722.6, and the 211 chassis is a match made in heaven. It's perfect.

@@MBDieselFreak It might be the best driver's diesel since it's way more smooth, but to be honest a V6 CDI costs way more to maintain. My dad had e300td from 94' and he didn't touch the engine for at least 5 years. I had an e270 cdi 01' and clk320 cdi tbh they had more problems like: injectors getting stuck, tip-tronic gearbox having problems with the driver(only automatic avaible). W211 is a solid car, but not one from the early production years before they fixed ABS pumps and such.

Do the scheduled maintenance on it.
But sadly, they don't make diesels anymore.

Well it is now Feb. 2024. Still own it.
Did suffer from Black Death but got it fixed.
So, back in 2022 got on the Natchez Trace Parkway I thought I'd see what fuel mileage I could get.
It has a speed limit of 55 MPH. Now, I will admit I set the cruise control to 57 MPH.
      I literally got 57.6 MPG.
I didn't start off with a full tank so to be cautious I pulled off, got some lunch and fuel.
But had I had a full tank, I could have actually gotten over it on 7.708 gallons of fuel.
Currently it has over 300,000 miles on it.
      Need a new headliner.
The drivers seat has some wear and tear on it.
And the front passenger seat need to have a bushing replaced.
It seems this is a common occurrence with this model.
I see looking back at the video, your door sills have come off like mine.
While the satellite navigation still works, I'm not paying what they want for an updated disk, if they actually have them.
Since it is now 2024, I use my cell phone for that.
The only real issue with this model is the windshield.
I'm on my fourth one currently.
Seems the design is prone to cracking if hit by a rock tossed up by another vehicle. And when it does got hit, it only takes a couple of minutes to spread.

My question is : how do the injector seals fail so quickly?
Are the replacement seals properly designed?
Seems like increasing boost would adversely effect the injector seal life.

Trip computer has reported as high as 42.5mpg although as measured at the pump, the car has returned as high as 38.5mpg. I've recorded every fill up on www.fueleconomy.gov. Overall, with mostly city driving over the past 12 years, the car has returned an average of 28 mpg. I'm going on more road trips lately. I'll report back my experiences.

      @Tearanew 5 років тому

@@ttocselbag5054 - I agree that the total mileage on my car is nothing. But age also has its impact, as I'll discuss below. Fuel consumption is remarkable. I drove from Washington DC to Montreal on less than one tank of fuel. In October, I drove from DC to Bar Harbor, ME....again less than one tank....730 miles.....and still had at least 50 left. As for reliability, over the 12 years I've owned it, I had a transmission leak and steering rack leak pretty much when new. Later, at about 6 years, I had a glow plug go bad so I replaced all of them. Apart from that, tires and battery, that's it. And keep in mind....cars do age...even if you don't drive them a lot. Being garage kept helps a lot. I plan to hold on to this one until the wheels fall off! I especially like the fact that its a cast iron straight six. A more traditional layout for Mercedes (and other German manufacturers). And it doesn't have Bluetec which I understand had proven to be troublesome. And i can burn 500 ppm Diesel if need be. Can't do that with a Bluetec.

It’s more tiresome to an engine to be used for short commutes, even if they gather less mileage. I drive about 40 miles twice a day with my two litre diesel A6. I preheat it with Webasto and then run it for an hour in optimal operation range. Then I do the same in the evening. I drove my last A6 to about 300 000 miles.
