  • In Africa, the war to save the black rhino is reaching a bitter climax. Armed poachers have swept through East Africa slaughtering the rhino for its valuable horn - bringing the animal perilously close to extinction. In an unprecedented conservation measure, Zimbabwe game rangers now guard Africa's black rhino population with the government's permission to shoot poachers on sight. Both man and beast are dying in this tragic conflict; the enemies are greed, corruption and ignorance in THE RHINO WAR.

I lived with Dolf Saseen the Zambezi ranger that appears at the beginning of the footage. A true bush-man and humble gent. I shared sone great times with hum in Kariba un the late 80's early 90's.

I remember this all very well. What a hell time it was. It still is. My brother seen here, head Nationals Parks and Wildlife and of Operation Stronghold, at enormous cost, eventually had it signed into law. Kill a Rhino. Kill you.

Carole, Many thanks to your brother for all that has and still is being done to save these majestic animals. I pray that my grandchildrens' grandchildren will be able to see these gentle creatures in their own wild habitat. Thanks again.

Thank you Nikki. I shall most certainly convey to the old soldier, now well into his 71st year, your kind and thoughtful comments. What a great personal cost was his. He would to it all over again. Yes to your prayers. Thankfully I grew up when Rhino could be seen frequently, at least 60 years ago, and we saw them regularly. No big deal then. Greed and corruption has kiaboshed much for the generations that followed mine.

These poor poor animals, what have they done to deserve this. How can a solution be found quickly to help save these majestic creatures. One of the solution has to start from helping the Poachers. Unemployment, hunger, lack of money to fund medication, transportation, Government funding to help the unemployed etc, etc. We must help these people first and foremost before we take the next step. Stopping "Bush meat" hunting is another source of taking food away from the table and taking employment away from these poor people making a quick buck. I probably would do likewise if I see my children starving. I suppose the argument is that most of these Poachers are from another African country, right?

That's a powerful & sad story. I'm completely on the side of the conservationist. So many billions of us, for so few previous dinosaurs left. For knife handles, statues & b.s. potions. Stop the poachers at ALL COSTS.

Look on the positive side, once the animal is gone the poachers will have one less source of illegal money. By trying to save it your just keeping them in buisness.

Whilst the desperate need for money of which a tiny amount is earned by trackers/poachers... the people at the bottom of the line. This is hard for us to begin to understand. Although some African countries are trying to educate local people that if the continuation of poaching carries on the tourism will stop thus creating an even worse situation to their lives. I don't condone but we have to understand that for a desperate person who needs to eat will do anything.... The people I find ignorant, greedy, egoistic & like shit on the sole of my shoe ! are trophy hunters of whom also fuel the situation knowing they can exploit & use desperate poor African people. As for Asiatic mindset of alternative medicine their governments have no excuse but to try harder.... Although recent reports of an Asian diplomat smuggling Ivory into his country doesn't give you much hope of some Asian countries being true to their word in the so called crack down of illegal smuggling.

They're fighting a war. As such, the Rangers should be equipped with night vision, thermal imaging, and have dedicated lift assets at their disposal. Then, either dirt bikes or Jeeps, and mount a fifty cal or LMGs mounted on\in the jeep. Hell, I would even have a group Airborne trained...they can go through with existing Military Abn Tng over there, so wouldn't be impossible to do. The Government has to start funding the Rangers more so than are currently it seems. If your gonna fight a war , fight a war . It seems to me the government is either IN on the whole thing,as in getting a cut of the rhino horn sales, or just doesn't care, because it doesn't affect them personally.
    Just my two cents

Maybe through showing them scientific evidence that it doesn't have the medicinal characteristics that they believe derive from it uses might dissuade them. In some places in the middle east where they used it to make handles for knives they have started using other materials. A conservation effort has to be organised between China and America. This will also help to improve our relations with the Chinese government.
