Love this - you do a great job calmly describing the reality of BFS. It can be consuming and cause extremely high anxiety but as you clearly state, as inconvenient as it may be, it’s not going to kill you or harm you in any way. If we focus on that rather than the worst, it helps us accept and move on.
Would love to understand why people get it? I suppose since it isn’t harmful, it’s low priority in terms of research but an understanding of it could help a lot of people mentally.

I have had this for 20 friggin years. It comes and goes, as you say. I find magnesium helps. When I don't take it (on purpose), the twitching is more much intense--although this could just be the placebo effect. The most annoying thing about BFS are "hotspots". I can live with random twitches here and there that happen all day long, but when they happen in the same place, it drives me crazy. Two decades of it, and it is still hard. But I found your video very helpful, even after living with this for 20 years!

    • @KinkssNCoilss
      @KinkssNCoilss 3 роки тому +1

I agree. It’s going on 19 years for me and it’s still incredibly annoying. After almost 19 years in, a brand new “hotspot” has developed in my left ear last month and it is *BY FAR* the most annoying and most stressful twitch I’ve ever had. I used to think eyelid hotspots were the worst but this ear thing takes the cake.
I’ve tried magnesium over the years but it doesn’t really help me, unfortunately. Or maybe I’m not taking a high enough supplement.
I just hope one day this shit will go away completely.

Thank you so much for this video! I haven't been diagnosed and only just learned it was a thing. my twitches started after I was in the car with an unstable friend of mine, and he decided to drive incredibly fast and I thought he was gonna take us both out. my Doctor didn't seem to have an answer and wasn't really concerned either, and my psychologist just dismissed it as a nervous tick. I've been so terrified of not knowing what the hell is going on with my body for months! and on top of that have to deal with freaking out with loud or ongoing noises (like car engines, boiling kettles, etc.)
I'm so tired of having no idea why I'm like this. I'd never had health anxieties in the past and have dealt with undiagnosed stuff before.
I'm just really glad there are people out there who will actually know what I'm talking about now, I felt really alone before.
sorry for spilling my guts out in this comment

Melissa Lupo I hope you’re feeling better with your twitching. Sorry for the delay but life’s been very busy lately and of course with the additional stress of corona virus it’s been tough.
General advice I give to people is to change your thought process, stop giving twitching time and replace that thought process with something you love!
Stop asking yourself “what if” and try to get out for fresh air as often as possible.
Be thankful for nature and all the good things in life!
Try to zone out too, set your phone down and close your eyes and breath.. meditate and just slow down that fast world we all live in.
If you have specific questions please ask, take care.

I keep telling myself it's BFS, because my massive twitching started at the same time as the pandemic. I went weeks of hypochondria moments, from HIV to having ALS. I sat down and wrote down symptoms I noticed AFTER the pandemic and symptoms that happened before. I went 2 months of flight or fight body mode during the Covid outbreak..After writing everything down it boiled down to carpal tunnel syndrome with ulnar nerve compression (waking up with sleepy hands). Everything else, from twitching to "percieved weakness", was something I experienced after the pandemic. I truly believe my anxiety triggered BFS.

Thank you for this video. I couple weeks ago I started noticing tremors in my hands and soon after started getting constant muscles twitches all over my body. I laughed watching this because I'm that person that is constantly sticking out my tongue, walking on my tiptoes, and doing push ups to check my strength. In February, I left the US for a new job in another country where I didn't know anyone. I am still under a lot of stress trying to learn to navigate my new life apart from my family and friends. I think one of the major breaking points for me was when Covid hit as I was just moving into my new place. I was so paranoid about contracting it that I checked my temperature every hour of every day and never left my apartment unless it was to go to work. As someone who is an extremely hypersensitive hypochondriac, I know my thoughts are irrational but it's hard to over look them. I've recently booked an appointment with a therapist to try to get in a better mindset and I'm getting tests done by a neurologist in a few weeks. I know these twitches are most likely anxiety induced, but I need that confirmation from my doctor just for my own peace of mind.

Becoming a parent has caused this for me. When my baby was 4 months old he stopped sleeping through the night. I was exhausted and unable to think straight. I brought my baby to swimming and when I got home I noticed my arm was exhausted from holding his baby seat. The tiredness kept up all day so I googled tiredness in the arm. Then ALS popped up. I absolutely freaked out. I started noticing absolutely every single minute movement my arm would make. I started over thinking everything my arm was doing convincing myself it wasnr right. I had several severe panic attacks and sleepless nights. Then after about 2 months of this my arm began to twitch. Then my leg, my neck, my thumb, my toes wouldn't hold still at night from all the twitching and I felt like I was internally shaking. It's been almost 9 months now and I haven't gotten any weaker now are my muscles atrophying; just twitching so I know its not ALS. I'm going to see a neurologist on the 22nd of Jan to rule anything because my mother has MS but its only lately I have copped on to the fact I don't have Motor Neuron Disease. Its very easy to get caught up in the twitching and go back to the "what if the twitching is something serious?" thought but I'm trying to take care of myself. Getting more sleep, eating right and exercising. Gut health is hugely linked to all this and brain health in general. I highly recommend looking into it!

Great Video, I have been twitching for about 5 months, started in legs but have had them all over, currently have a hot spot on my neck on the left side almost constant. I saw my primary care doctor after a couple of months , she did a full exam did bloodwork and told me that I'm fine. I asked if I should see a neurologist, and she said no. You have to trust your doctor. Definitely what has helped me are your videos and others from fellow BFS sufferers. I still have bad days but more good days than bad.

My fasciculations (mainly left calf muscle) started in January. The skin on my legs feels desensitized and I tremble almost all of the time ( probably due to anxiety). I have vestibular migraines, oral dysesthesia and tinnitus - all neurological conditions and I am 64, right in the ballpark for a degenerative disease. I also know someone with MND (ALS) for whom it took 18 months for a diagnosis. Went to GP, referred to neurologist and got the appointment for six months hence then Coronavirus hit and I am locked down alone. So all of these things together have contributed to a near mental collapse as I had convinced myself that I in early stage MND.
Yes I did Google the symptoms and likely outcome and it was only then that I found out about BFS. I am given to somatic analysis so I am hoping this is what it turns out to be. Won’t be convinced until I have an EMG whenever that may be with this dratted lockdown.
Sorry for my “life story” just wanted to say thank you for your channel to which I have just subscribed. UA-cam obviously has seen me researching because it led me to you. I think the worst of my panic about MND is over - for the time being anyway. More strength to you for helping and sharing.

Nothing has come up in my MRI's but I am terrified. When the trembling and twitching started my stress had hit an all time high, I rational do think my new symptoms are 100% stress and anxiety because they started when I was EXTREAMLY stressed and I notice them Alot less when I can calm down a bit.

Thank you so much for this video. My husband has been twitching for around 9 months now. He's been always extremely anxious about stuff. Always overthinking even the most little things.
I think what scares him the most is the fact that his grandfather died of bulbar ALS. Even when the doctors said that it was because of the fact that he served in the army during war.
The twitches seemed to have started after him drinking for a few months. Since he had been dealing with severe anxiety, he found himself to feel more "chill" if he had a few beers everyday. Which I totally hated, but it was so hard to convince him to not do it.
Then the twitches started, and he totally stopped drinking. The twitches never went away tho. And that's when he started to fear the worst.
He kept saying that his left leg had atrophy because it looked different than the right leg. That lasted a few months. Then he said that even tho he had twitches all over, he felt really weird ones in his left ankle and thought the muscle was wasted. After he got over that, it was his shoulder that felt "weird". Then he had a little bit of cold and kept clearing his throat and attributed it to ALS. And the last spot that he feels uneasy about is his left hand! He says it looks different than the right one. That the creases are not the same. Which is true. But he doesn't take in consideration the fact that his thumb was almost cut of when he was a teenager. And his pinky also had an injury that never healed right. To this day he cannot extend it. It's forever bent.
He's scared of going to the doctor, and I can't convince him.
He has some good days. But the bad days are horrible. He gets incredibly pessimistic. And want to fit himself in all the rarest cases of ALS when the twitching came first. Or when it affects a very young person.
He's been doing pushups and he actually started by doing 40 every day and improved to the the point of doing 70 in a couple of weeks. Still, he thinks the worst.
I try to stay as positive as I can, but it's wearing on me so bad that sometimes I find myself believing all the things that he believes and thinking that he's truly sick. If it's bad for me, I can't imagine how bad it is for him.
I won't show my concern to him, because it will make it worse. But it's been hard.
    Any advise?
    Thank you in advance!

The best action is to speak with the Neuro, they are the only place to seek reassurance.
You’ve described a lot there but I’d also say work on the anxiety and stress, it may not be connected but if he is in a high state of anxiety it certainly won’t help matters.
Remember, we all get injuries and long term issues but it’s irrational to go to the worst possible case in your line of thought, that’s unhealthy and I suggest to work on that.
I hope he feels better soon.

How's your husband doing now? He sounds a lot like I am. I am a girl and with a lot of stuff going around me I developed these twitches. I can identify with what he is going through. One important thing I found during my online research is that ALS is not as common as we think. And it is not as common in younger people. Secondly, I developed my twitches when the pandemic put a pause to my heavy exercise routine. Instead of exercise, stress, sedentary lifestyle and physical exhaustion began to rule my life. I doubt ALS or anything similar can affect people who are active. I am worries about my condition but I am trying my level best to address it positively and give my body time to adjust...

    • @stephaniedunker6699
      @stephaniedunker6699 3 роки тому +1

@@appugiri he's got bad days and good days. It's been a year and half now with the twitches. Some days he'll go through without saying anything about them. Some days he comes up with a new "weird" thing that looks like ALS to him. Even in his good days, I can tell he's anxious, over reacting to little things for example, thinking the worst case scenario. He still doesn't want to go to the doctor. There's no way I can convince him. Every time I bring it up, he says he's scared and prefers to wait. "If three years pass and I'm ok, then I'll stop worrying about it". Which is ridiculous to me to live your life this way because you are afraid. It's no way of living.
So you should really go to the Neuro and put your mind at rest! I'm sorry you have to go through it! I hope you get better! :)

I appreciate you putting this video out to help calm people's nerves, literally. lol. I started having this twitching about 3-4 yrs ago. Started with the eye fluttering often, then it spread to every single part of my body, even inside my ear and in my nether regions, which is something I never hear about from anyone (perhaps it's taboo to talk about). Only had occasional, very mild, twitching in the years leading up to this. I've had anxiety my whole life, but now have much better coping mechanisms, so the anxiety is much less than before, but as a single parent have had responsibilities piled on top of me, which didn't help matters. I drink pop and smoke cigarettes, which I'm sure also doesn't help. I was told it might be Vitamin D deficiency since my levels were low, and have taken vitamin D and magnesium for some years now, but it's not making any difference with the chronic twitching, but it seems to have boosted my immune system, which is a nice side effect. Given the stressful situations that I've had to deal with lately, it's hard to quit my habits of pop and cigs, though I'm working on a plan to quit both. Not sure if it will make a difference with this though.

What I have found happened to me as well is the feeling of tight bands around the bottom of my calves and sometimes around my forehead too. Anyone else had this too???

However I know I'm in control, its not gonna kill me, im still strong, I run and cycle just as much as before. I know bfs is a mindset challenge.

I seriously never thought of it this way. I've had this for more than a decade now. I switched high schools and took it real hard, super stressed and anxious. Thats when they started. They weren't that bad and I weren't concerned about them in particular. They'd come and go at varying intensity (most of the time they were not an issue) but then 10 years later I got into a relationship that was very stressful to say the least and lasted way longer than it should have. I noticed more and more getting consistent twitching. When the relationship finally ended last year twitching was through the roof. And instead of my anxiety going down, it seemed to just get transferred to focusing on twitching. Like you said, super aware of everytime my body moves. It's exhausting. How do you go back once you become super aware...

I'm in the first category. I got pretty much every neurological test done. I don't have MS, ALS, Parkinson, no deficiency, nothing. I just got these twitches and they are ANNOYING. They are completely random, don't get triggered by anything really and last as long as they want to. 1 second, 1 Minute, 1 hour, 1 day.
I've never had any muscle twitching till late September of 2023 and I now I have it and I just don't unterstand why. They are not constant. I twitch every day though. It's most annoying around the eye region for me.
I'm not afraid of any disease (I was in the beginning) now I'm just afraid of the twitching itself. Which really doesn't help.

Hi, I have been experiencing twitching all over my body for about 8 months, and I’m sacred. From head to toe I have had twitches, name a spot and I for sure know I’ve had a twitch there. I am only 14 years old so I know the chances of it being something bad is very very high. It all started in the in the summer of 2019 in July where I had my first twitch. Before this I was going through a very rough time with my health anxiety. I was convinced I had all types of cancers each day and even Alzheimer’s. I went to the doctor for this and they said it was nothing to worry about. That day I was leaving come the doctors office I experienced a twitch in my leg that went and thought nothing about it. About two weeks later I started to experience a twitch in my eyelid that lasted for about 2 to 3 weeks. After that went away I started to experience twitching in my stomach and arms and form there it just got to the pant where it was literally everywhere (even in my tongue). I then started to like up what these twitches meant and when I did als immediately popped up. I thought of the worst. I thought I’m less than no time I was going to be sitting in a wheelchair for however long I was going to live. After a while of searching, I found out what bfs was and was so relieved. I also have symptoms of tingling, burning, electrical shock in my hands and feet, buzzing in my feet, and vibrating in some of my muscles. After finding out what bfs was my symptoms started to get to a minimum but still flare up. There will be times I reassure myself I am fine, but then start licking stuff up and get scared for my life. Here recently I started to get a weakness feeling in my neck because my anxiety was so bad I almost passed out. I stared to reassure myself it was nothing and the weakness went away. As of right now I am at a pint where I honestly can t say I know what is going on with my body but also don’t think it’s anything bad because of my other symptoms like the buzzing and burning feelings which are not als symptoms. Right now my symptoms have gotten much better and I am happy, but I want to know what you think about this. I have also read about people with these twitches ever since they were 12 and are now 29 and going so that helps me calm down a lot. Also, do you ever get a twitch in your throat that makes your breathing weird for a split second?

I am 38 years old and have had twitching since nearly 2 years now. It started with my legs and now it's all over my body. I visited a neurologist and after 2-3 visits he said it's because of anxiety. But I really get scared when I search the net and ALS comes up. Sometimes it's hardly noticeable and sometimes it's persistent for some days and really annoying. As more I think about it more it happens. Good advice mostly but the whole "nothing to worry about" thing doesn't work much for those of us with CFS. The cramping can be more than annoying, it can be extremely painful. Waking up from deep sleep with a full on charlie horse is a nightmare. Countless times I have wished all I had was BFS.
That said, deep breathing exercises do help to relax and calm muscles down.

I am sure I am not the only one that appreciates your sharing.
As I mentioned, I have been working on using breathing exercises, calming meditations, plus lots of gentle stretching and hydrating and it does seem to help a lot. I have not been able to "cure" my fasciculation issues but it is better and although I still get some mild cramping, I have only woken up to a charlie horse a couple of times since my original comment. That is a big improvement and it means much better sleep for me, which also means lower stress. Perhaps I can turn the vicious cycle around to a healing cycle yet.

BFS for two years now and sort of accepted the fact that I will twitch now for as long as it will last. Where I am struggling now is with anxiety. I am dealing with dizziness. The dizziness where you sort of feel like you are floating or drunk. I feel trapped. Trapped in a circle where I bounce from one symptom to another. I am on anxiety medication and headache prevention medicine, but the dizziness/drunkenness/foggy feeling is ever present. I want to get out of this circle, I just don't know how. Are there known podcasts or anything that help with Health anxiety or cognitive behavioral therapy? Thanks for posting. Very interesting in learning how I can get out of this vicious circle and become more present with my family.

David Roustio The dizziness is a huge anxiety symptom, I myself have had bouts of this over the years from mild to feeling a bit off to full blown walking on a boat..
I’ve had many other symptoms too which I’ll definitely include in my next video, more addressing anxiety rather than twitching.
I hope you found some reassurance in this first VLOG.

+David Roustio I find you have to just try to stop thinking about all the symptoms and fill that thought space with things your love and enjoy.
Think only positive thoughts and stop thinking of everything negative.
The walks and fresh air do help, maybe even some treats like reflexology, maybe get someone to gently rub your shoulders.

I twitch all day everyday none stop everywhere in my body and I wonder if this will continue like this for the rest of my life. Also want to add that when doctors told me this could be anxiety I was really shocked because I was doubting it like twitching all day when I’m not even stressed that cannot be anxiety has to be something worse.

    • @bfsanxietysupport
      @bfsanxietysupport  4 роки тому

Carla Reis Hi, the part that’s scary is the fact you didn’t twitch before and now it’s happening all the time head to toe! I get it but if your doctors can’t find anything wrong that’s excellent news and class I’ve BFS profile.
None of us know why and many have anxiety but others do not, I would say there can be multiple reasons for BFS and whilst anxiety may not be the cause it certainly makes it way worse.
BFS is like a rollercoaster, it can reduce for a period then go into overdrive for another period.
Many people with BFS also get other sensory pains and feelings but they also come and go..
if your strong and otherwise healthy try to ignore the twitching.

BFS & Anxiety Support Hello, Thank you for replying back. Yes I feel normal except the fact that I twitch all day long like you said from head to toe. I begged my neurologist to do a emg to make me feel better even though he told me I don’t have als after a physical exam and the emg and nvs was normal. He told me could be my thyroid or anxiety. I found out I did in fact had a hypothyroidism he said that can be the cause or my anxiety . I do feel more twitching when I’m really stressed. I saw 2 neurologist and my primary care doctor all told me from physical exam that I don’t have als which makes me feel blessed knowing I don’t have this terrible disease. I’m seeing a physiatrist and he told me this is anxiety I knew your test was going to be normal. We all jump into the worse when we have anxiety it’s really hard. I hope that everyone get tested and stop googling it because knowing that you don’t have als it’s really reassuring.

I have had this in both my calves 24/7, also some tingling associated. The only problem is even though i get short random twitches in other places, the worry is that my thighs always feel sore and tight even though i am not feeling the actual twitch there, sometimes some muscle pain in my biceps too, anyone the same.

Interesting. Had my daughter, lost my gf, had to fight for custody, got a new gf, she dumped me a year later, graduated, got a new job, I got fired for the first time, then a global pandemic happened. Maybe that had something to do with why I have anxiety out of nowhere. I haven't seen a doc about it but I'm not going to until I've been working at my new job for a month or so. Thanks for the insight

I would say to not hit yourself as my experience shows it’s best to leave alone and ignore.
In the past I’ve poked and touched some that end up hotspots for months so I honestly just leave them alone.

I don’t hit the areas but I do touch them or press those areas. Lol It feels like it makes the twitch less annoying to put pressure on it. Sometimes it’s a subconscious reaction for me. I’ll do it without really thinking about it. There are times when I do try to ignore a hotspot and not touch it, but I’ll feel a strong sense of anxiety. It’s almost like I HAVE to touch that spot.

    Hello,
I am French, I am 50 years old and in my country we take very little of this syndrome. I myself have had fasciculations for 2 months, especially on my 2 calves and more sporadically all over the body. However, I also have leg cramps, which are very frequent. Is this a sign that maybe associated with BFS ? I have a lot of concerns, because I consulted Dr Google who systematically refers to another very serious disease! I am waiting for an appointment with a neurologist and in the meantime I am VERY anxious. I do not feel, for the moment, muscle weakness

Bonjour, français aussi et 53 ans. 😊.

(vacances).
@GRABibus Thank you for your GRABibus response! It encourages me to believe that there may be something other than ALS because right now I'm only considering that eventuality, which as you can imagine is killing my morale. Stress, anxiety, loss of appetite ... I constantly scan my legs to note any muscle atrophy! I look forward to and dread both the appointment with the neurologist who is slow to arrive. Your answer warmed me to the heart. I am also quite a hypochondriac, (I also tire those around me quite a bit with this!) But to tell the truth, these fasciculations that I felt this summer rather appeared in a context where I was relaxed. (vacation).

Hello Carole, you feel exactly as me. You should see your neurologist as he is the only one who can conclude. I have also started a cognitive behavioral therapy to fight against hypochondria. I take also Paroxetine. I hope also that the second EMG in December will confirm that I have only fasciculations and no other bad stuff...😊
