The stupidest car on sale? | New Morgan Super 3 road review

- The Morgan Three-wheeler is dead, and it's replacement the Morgan Super 3 is here. No more vee-twin, no more external engine, we now have a three-cylinder 1.5-litre engine from Ford, mounted under the bodywork and a much upgraded interior. But can the Super 3 capture the soul of its predecessor?

Funny. He is quite correct. Until you have driven a Morgan three wheeler for at least 5000 miles you can't really comment. Number one if you chirp the rear wheel when gear changing you are not rev matching, which you need to do to keep momentum... blah blah, No 2 blah. Any motorcyclist will take to it in seconds because it is NOT A CAR... or a bike, but you drive it like one. When she scuffs her front wheel you put in the gas until the power brings you round and steer with that... more blah . If you like bikes but are feeling vulnerable or old then a Morgan will bring you endless joy. If you just want to LOVE EVERY drive then buy one. If you are expecting a car then forget it. You will need to tinker. Things will fall off. The bevel box (as of now) allegedly squeals like the old one. I could hear the familiar banging from the back over bumps. The lovely Mazda gear box is awesome and you can hear it whine and burr and resonate.especially at 100kph. You will need ear plugs on long drives. And goggles ate the very least. people will think that you are bonkers. You will be in a parade ALL the time. Photo stops will be a normal thing. You will need the right sort of wife (husband/partner/dog) because you HAVE to go touring. A Morgan is for folk who just love driving a proper motor car.... or motor thing...
I'm a motorcyclist - now mid 70s. I still ride my BMW GSA but I also have a 4 wheel Morgan Roadster. When the 3-Wheeler twin first came on the market, I was keen to get one (wish I had now!!) but decided the 4 wheeler with proper weather protection would be more usable than the 3-wheeler. I still think that, but figure that the latest 3-wheeler without the v-twin engine has lost a great deal of its appeal. But mainly, I want to say that I too have always considered the 3-wheeler to be a motorcycle! Compare it to a car and it is useless! Compare it to a motorcycle - and it is fantastic!
As an aging motorbike rider I REALLY like the idea of blatting about in one of these!
Cool, think I prefer this to it's predecessor. Sounds great too 👍
His smile says everything you need to know!!! ...and a fab backdrop of the view from the Malvern hills - Amazing!
I completely concur with this road test appraisal. Having spent the last month putting 750 miles on a Morgan Super 3 Malle edition around the lanes of Norfolk it was a complete joy and a smile a mile, something I really was not expecting in the way it delivered such fun by the spade load. Having briefly driven the previous model soon after its launch I can confirm that in my opinion the Super 3 is a big step beyond, the refinement and precision it delivers is way better. There really is nothing else quite like it and my congratulations must go to the team at Morgan.
0:50 The coolest wheels Morgan HAS EVER USED.
The most British car I know, in the better sense🤩🇬🇧💪 But I do prefer the preceding generation. Thank u Sean👍(you need motorbikes lenses when you drive a threewheeler & a hat or beret😉)
I wish morgan the best, but it is a hard pass from me. So much so I bought a 16 3 Wheeler this weekend. I know things had to change, but the looks of the old one and the character of the v-twin far outweigh any performance enhancements the new one provides.
The 3 wheeler is actually faster.
The driving experience is the core of enjoyment. 💯🤜💪
Looks like fun. I think you'd be wiser to wear eye protection though.
This is what I want! Lots of fun!
I like it. I have a 3 wheel motorcycle by Bombardier. It’s fun, easy perfect for a mature person. The other 3 wheel car is a nonstarter but this one is just right. Send any extras you might have.
great review Alex superb intro to the new Morgan Super 3
Would LOVE one of these, however, according to the local distributor, none of the new Morgan range is available in Australia due to not meeting local design rules.
Given our ADR's are supposed to comply with the same rules for the EU,.. well, I think there's a little blurring of the truth somewhere.
Yep it’s the same with the American built 3 wheeler the VANDERHALL which has a modern look and far more performance, now you can get one in OZ as the approval will be given accordingly to the dealer in Melbourne. 😊🇦🇺
I was in the MX5 chasing you through the hills! 👀
I know of only two other things this can be compared to: The Polaris Slingshot and the Campagna T-Rex. And having seen a T-Rex do a 200 foot burnout, I can definitely say that the driving experience is totally different.
The Slingshot is hideous looking. The T-Rex isn't that bad but still obese in comparison to the Morgan and even the Vanderhall.
Looks like loads of fun...The wheels are perfect. I think I'd fit a loader exhaust though.
Great video. Magnificent machine. ❤
I’m 70 and a bit jealous.
That is so beautiful! I’m not bananas about the Volvo wheels but I don’t think that will be the reason I won’t be buying one. I’ll have to save some pin money before I get worked up about aesthetic details.
You try to be angry or sad, after an inspired trip in that car! I love the three pot, creaks and cranks. Only thingm digi dials gotta go, and replacd by a couple of analogue Smith!
If it had a soft top as some (all?) early Morgan three wheelers did and Trikings, it could be a daily driver for the same people (me!) who has had a Lotus 7 as their only car. Even Lomax managed that. Ironically I built one of those but with aero screens and sold it because the wind battering made driving unpleasant unless it was warm. I’ve always driven soft tops with the roof down unless it was raining but the choice made the difference.
I realise none of this applies if you have multiple cars and garaging for them. My garage is for bicycles!
great review
I've got one. I completely agree with everything he says. Such a laugh to drive
Why not go full British and use the triple from the Rocket 3 ?
I think of all the three wheelers that this one is the best in all metrics. It’s pretty, it’s powerful for its weight and it’s got a depth of heritage the Slingshot and Vanderhall won’t have for quite some time.
Thank goodness we have yet another armchair critic who knows stuff no-one at Morgan even thought of.
Brilliant little car, what a fun and exhilarating doing experience.
BUT just a word of caution, if you value your eye sight, wear some goggles or an open face helmet with a visor⚠️😲
As a motorcyclist of almost 40 years experience you'll be shocked at the size of some of the bugs that will smack you in the face and eyes, they hurt!!
June Bugs at 70mph definitely hurt.
@@rbarbetta1978 I always wear a full face helmet with my visor shut when travelling
One time on a hot day, just cruising slow I lifted my visor to enjoy the cool.breeze and along came a bee and got lodged between my helmet and face!
It stung me real bad oh wow did that angry bee hurt.
Not just the smack of the bee hitting me but the actual stinging part was much worse and for around a week after my face ballooned......😳😲⚠️😁
@@pdtech4524 Yep, that's happened to me too! Luckily I jammed my finger in between my helmet and my head and crushed the bee before it could sting me. I got lucky not to have gotten stung. But the bee guts smeared into the side of my head wasn't pleasant!
Morgan, please could you do us a "Super 2" with a 1200 cc horizontally opposed twin in front of the front axle, gearbox behind it driving the FRONT wheels and now you've got the halfshafts, inboard brakes to improve unsprung weight at the front (to nearly zero). It's such an obvious solution. Behind the seats, there'd be more space for luggage and a hood.
Wouldn't a Super 2 be a motorbike? 🤔
@@GoodwoodRR No, because in Morgan denomination, "Plus Four" = four cylinder sports, "Plus Six" = six cylinder, "Plus 8" = eight cylinder - Morgan names by cylinder-count. Otherwise a "Plus Eight" would need to be a rigid eight like the building-site Atkis. "Super 3" = three cylinder, "Super 2" would then be two. Hence the differentiation "Morgan THREE-WHEELER", here, wheels, not (as otherwise), cylinders.
this looks like SOOOOO much fun !!
Do you have to register this as a motorcycle in the US?
4:50 I used to get that in my Micra - just take your foot off the throttle before you change gear. 🤔
Beautiful machine. A set of goggles perhaps? :)
It sounds properly rorty. The wheel design is crisp.
Wheels look like from a '30s Bugatti.
How does the Morgan compare to the Slingshot?
Nice Threewheeler. Sounds like a Triumph Motorcycle.
The driver is happy and 11:47 the Morgan is happy!
I don't think the grin left your face
It does look and sound exciting, especially considering that it's being driven at high speed on the wrong side of the road.
Original.
I'm going to order one!!!
High time Morgan did something better with the back end, why have just a plain skirt? - include some pleats & a tartan! : )
This wheel configuration seems like it would be highly stable.
por que sera que nao utilizaram o 1.0 ecoboost.
Love most of it, just not those side planks,,,,
There has to be a prettier way to do that.
@@mattagnew206 Agreed, that smacks of just jury rig it so we can test drive it.
Love the Moran.
New Morgans no longer available in Australia, too many regulations!
Why don’t you take it for a spin round the Goodwood road racing track?
As the engine has changed to a 'car-sourced' item I expected front-wheel drive.
I wonder how much re-engineering went into mating the Miata transmission bolt onto what *should* be a transverse-mounted engine...
With most spped limits on our motorways at 50mph due to congestion and road works, a Morgan 3 wheeler is ideal.
Take my money now!
The stupidest toy for a rich person.
I WANT ONE!
I want one.... for all the freedom feeling of riding a motorcycle .... for people like me who just can't seem to master a motorcycle....
Many bikers love a triple, the car guys are behind the curve.
These engines are made to sound like half a six-cylinder, we have a Skoda citigo because of it. And driving almost as analog as an electronics free sportsbike from the 1990 or 2000 this car, a fun, yes! (Tires matter). And you should wear a helmet or at least glasses next time, please - a pain to see you without.
These typ of cars are entirely unsafe like a motorbike? Yes, and that's why they haven't got airbags for instance. Airbags are of not much use with entirely unsafe vehicles.
'(A rider wouldn't give up on riding his horse - because it's not made from plastics, but alive. Or carbon fiber. Too many new products today just seem to be plain dead to drive.')
AMAZING PRODUCT TO EVEN EXIST
Needs a wooden steering wheel.
I love this car .......! C'est unique......!
Dangerous car, 3 wheels and no roof, not to mention what that front end will do to a pedestrian.
Well known deathtraps, fast on straights but can't corner at all & flip if pushed. Ask Freddie Flintoff how they drive, poor sod.
I need one.
Sounds like a six. Needs a little more amplification!
That engine sounds the business
WANT
I'm disappointed the electric version is unavailable.
Glad there not going electric
I like it .
I humbly suggest that the safety and utility of this vehicle could be improved via the placement of a pair of small subsidiary wheels to either side of the existing rear wheel. Such a pair of small subsidiary wheels would have the beneficial effect of preventing the vehicle from falling over during operation.
Nope. Deathtrap it is, take it or leave it.
Like trainer wheels? lol.
Fantastic but the whistling noise woud get on my nerves
that's the least of it.
Cooool Car!!!! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
7:03 did Morgan stole those gauges and switches off decommissioned RAF Phantoms? Because thats what it looks like, the whole thing feels like they're trying to imagine upgrading from a Spitfire (the previous 3-wheeler) into an early cold war jet...
EYE protection! Turn right and you will be hit by whatever the tyre throws at you . Years of driving a "7" i wouldnt even turn the key without.
I like it
20” wire wheels? Did I hear wrong?
Yeah, you did hear that but I am really 110% sure that was a false statement.
Looks like a bathtub on wheels
It is the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a vehicle on the road.
is this what Flintoff was driving ?
Yes, and it ripped half his face off.
He was racing around a track in one.
Hey man, you should be wearing a helmet driving on an open road! Hammond wasn't wearing a helmet when he test drove this vehicle on Top Gear, but he was on a closed course, so, I figured that you should be a little more aware. If some drunk ran you off the road and you flip that thing, you won't have much of a face above the eyebrows...
Just saying...
There is no stupider purchase on earth than buying a super car. No one who can afford one is qualified to drive one.
Stupidest. Nah, craziest, yes!
Unsafe PoS.
Absolutely no reason to buy this over a caterham or even a Mazda mx5.
Surprised they didn't team up with BMW and use the gs1250 motor...
- driving the front wheels.
It's just fun and has no other function
Nonsense: it gets you places.
...it just also happens to put a smile on your face, every time you drive it.
@@MishraArtificer it's called sarcasm
👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Sorry, I'm not a fan. Please bring back the motorcycle engine. Its much more attractive and sounds some much better.
Lost the character of a vee twin
I hate everything with 3 cylinders, 3 wheels I don't mind.
For 130kg less, you get a four-wheeler Caterham.
Won't be cool if you don't protect your eyes.
Maybe compare it to a Grinnall Scorpion, very similar concept
My gut feeling is it will flop.
Morgan has been selling three-wheeler vehicles since 1910. They know their market well. Visited them back in May and they appear to be building more now than they've ever done.
@@bw1376 It will flop I know. The Italian owners have misjudged the market for this type of 3 wheeler I know.
@@bertiewooster3326 It will flop because you say it will? There must be a reason why?
@@bw1376 Sales are falling fast its an oddball expensive toy that is totally impractical the previous 3 wheeler similar to the original was fairly successful as it could be related to the past.
@@bertiewooster3326 Are they? I couldn't tell that from visiting the factory. It is roomier than the last one, safer and more reliable. There are many things on Super 3 that relate to previous ones, including an inboard car engine and the 'super' name.
just harry kane hosting a car show
1:02 it weights 50kg more than the 3-wheeler? But isn't _it_ the 3-wheeler? Not sure that statement made any sense, and it doesn't bode well for the rest of the video, sadly.
Old car: Morgan 3-Wheeler. New car: Morgan Super 3. Name's even in title and description.
@@wewantourdarbyback I get that. But as both have 3 wheels, it's not exactly clear when they're using the term as a model name and when it's a description, as they later also refer to this new version as "3-wheeler."
このテの外人系🚙動画は本人ばかり写っていて🚙自体はあまり写っていない物がほとんどだと感じる😾💦自己顕示欲が強いのかなぁ…😾❔
How big is the market available for this thing? I imagine it is illegal in most developed countries.
Morgan hand-makes its cars in a shed. So ... even minimal demand exceeds supply.
The Polaris Slingshot and the Campagna T-Rex are legal almost everywhere.
@@serlegar As a vehicle that can be driven on public roads?
Yes, with registration like a motorcycle in the U.S.
@@visekual6248 I see a lot of them in Canada
It's obvious that this reviewer is not very tall. One question I would have is about the ability for someone who is over 6ft tall (6ft 2in actually) to fit into the car. This reviewer does not address that at all.
😁 I prefer vertically challenged. But to answer your question, although the seats are fixed, the pedal box is adjustable. Much like the presenter here, I’m 5’2” so for me the pedal box is all the way towards the seat, but there is plenty of room for a taller drivers
If only it had an automatic gearbox.... :)
The Miata comes with an automatic; I'm sure you could probably squeeze it into place...
This is the car that Freddie Flintoff rolled over in taking a corner at 22mph. It's a death trap
I've driven through corners in a Super 3 faster than that without crashing.
Slab sided🤮
Since when was STUPIDEST ever an English word Charles? 🤷♂️
the numerous accidents related to the 3 wheel vehicles should have made this car uncertifiable for insurance cover...
The same goes for motorcycles.
Boring comment...and Morgan insurance is surprisingly cheap because those of us who drive them are old fogeys, who don't drive many miles a year in them (would you go out in this in the rain or snow?) and who are very careful drivers.
When I drive around, I don't want to be the one that can be singled out.
At least no gang-banger's gonna carjack you.
It definitely makes you drive more carefully, since everyone will be staring at you...I realized the same thing when I went from my old first-gen Focus (bland as bland can be) to a Charger that was painted bright yellow from its previous life as a taxi. Sure I'll never lose track of it in the parking lot, but *neither will anyone else*.
Nice tricycle, but I'll pass
@@kraenk12 yup, but fortunately there's no shortage of folks with more money than sense.
Should be banned! Not safe on the road
Looks bloody awful compared to the previous model. The V Twin looked and sounded fantastic and this mess has lost the magic.
