Ahhh … Just watched a Curlsmith review and loved it, then your video came on; I was feeling disheartened but then completely understood your viewpoint. Thank you for the transparency and honesty. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Never tried Curlsmith BUT even though you and I have completely different hair, I have always appreciated the education and your care for us curlies and wavies.
Thank you for being a rebel and having AN opinion!!! I'm very confused why they have PEGs in their ingredients and super strong fragrance if they're supposedly clean, especially with the price tag. I'm not opposed to fragrance but theirs is especially strong. I've noticed on 3 separate occasions when I try to use Curlsmith products, I lose ALOT of hair 😳 and I haven't figured out why 🤔
it didnt work for me as well the fragrance is so INTENSE, it was overwhelming my scalp also was irritated, i gave the products ive bought away (which were only stylers)
I commented on your Instagram, lol. I was just so happy to see you even discuss it. I made the mistake of trying the Styling Souffle. 😳 I had to clarify it off after one use of only a tsp on soaking wet hair. The cast would not even scrunch out. I have high density mostly medium textured hair but it is low porosity and gets build up really easily.
Lol quite a few people said something. But your experience is exactly why I wanted to say something. I didn't have that experience with the Souffle but definitely with some other products.
I realized that the cast is pretty strong, but as stubborn as the cast is you have to really scrunch and squeeze your hair and it'll feel soft, but I feel like it shouldn't be like that and that's my major dislike with their gel too. I have similar high density and low porosity hair too. Aunt Jackie's Curl Boss has an easy SOTC, it's a light-medium hold
I've started to love water soluble products and invest in them simply because I'm seeing a difference in the health of my hair. My hair tends to get build up easily from using other non-water soluble products. I. * can * clarify more but clarifying more leads to a really dry and itchy scalp for me. I prefer clarifying 1-2 times a month and using water soluble products. That's what my hair and scalp like. Hair = water soluble, scalp = low poos with clarifying 1-2 times a month.
Thank you for explaining what has happened to my fine, low porosity hair. I started using curlsmith products recently and the build up is extreme. My normal clarifying shampoo isn't touching it.
I'm so glad you made this video. When I found Curlsmith, I ditched every product I had, and as many of us curly heads, I had so many different products! My hair was looking fabulous and I was telling everyone I could about it. After almost a year or so, my hair is thinner, like obviously thinner where I can see my scalp. My favorite line was the protein, but whenever I use certain products from that line, my eyes are constantly watery and irritated until I pull my hair back and away from my face. I'm truly convinced it's Curlsmith that is causing all this change (dare I say damage?) To my hair.
I was using the protein conditioner and foam with combinations of gels and after 3 months I realised my hair was definitely thinner. I don't think it was protein overload as hair not brittle, just more coming out when finger detangling. I really noticed it after using the bond salve. I have stopped all CS products and the hair fall has significantly reduced!
i've been stressing out about my hairline suddenly starting to thin out and now that i'm looking into it im finding a small number of people like you describing something similar w curlsmith. im stopping usage...i hope it comes back
@@HolisticEnchilada It’s mainly the Mouisture line that is too heavy for me execept for the Styling Soufflé that is my favorite paired with the Shape Up Aqua Gel or Bouncy Strenght Volume Foam 🥰
I have fine curly hair and just ordered some Curlsmith products. We will see how they do. I do wet my hair everyday and use shampoo 3 times a week (twice low-poo and once sulfate). I am still looking for the perfect line for me. I have tried Jessicurl and SheaMoisture. Neither work for me. Will look at the products you recommend though. I love product review videos especially for fine curly hair. Thank you. ❤️
It's refreshing t. see someone that's NOT raving about all things curlsmith. So many people seem to like every single product, which is a bit strange to me since each line is very different from each other, so it would be unlikely to have the whole brand work for people, ya know?
They like every single product because curlsmith sponsors those videos. It's not a coincidence that every time they launch a new product, every single curly youtuber reviews it at the same time.
This product favors more for 3b/c hair !!! Everyone complaining has curly hair but less textured . You should also try the water density test on your hair to know if you have high or low porosity.
I definitely think it's overall better for thicker and higher density hair types that have damage or dryness. My hair is high and medium porosity but because it's so fine and low density lots of products are too heavy.
@HolisticEnchilada Thank you so much for this video. I thought it was just me. I am on my curly hair journey and I’ve tried curlsmith orange line and my 2c wavy/curly hair look like 2a waves. I’ve tried bouncecurl with similar result. My hair looks flat, stringy and no definition. Do you have recommendations?
I have had mostly good experiences with Curlsmith. My hair needs more moisture, though, so I don’t use many products from the protein line. I absolutely love the multi-tasking conditioner. The Shine line works well for me too,and I love the #9 level hold gel. I only wash my hair once a week, and clarify every 5 weeks. My hair never gets greasy, just fuller. So, even if I use a moisturizing shampoo like their co-wash, my hair eventually goes back to its naturally dry state, before wash day. We have super hard water here, too. I have learned so much from your e-mails and watching you. I really appreciate it! I still can’t figure out Evolvh styling products, but I love the curl line of shampoo and conditioner. There is a protectant spray I’ve seen advertised that looks interesting, I don’t recall you featuring it. Thank you for the curly hair care education!
I bought most of them.. but nothing worked on me.. all made my hair dry and weighed my hair.. not much luck with ecoslay too.. however Innersense I create volume and I create hold worked better
I have very similar hair to yours - fine, low density, and wavy curls - I’m actually just starting to try to embrace my curls after a lifetime of trying to take my frizz and make my hair straight. I use Unite 7seconds shampoo and conditioner, and detangler/leave-in conditioner and they work fine (although I am super open to recommendations from folks with similar hair types!). But I’m wanting to add a curl cream or gel, but I don’t want to waste a bunch of money, so I’m really appreciating your work as I do research!🫶🏽😊
The curlsmith scalp recipe* line styling products seem to work well for my hair and leaves no build up, low porosity at roots/natural hair, higher porosity on ends due to bleach/color treated, I have wavy curly like you and I only used the styling air dry cream and gel in this line, not the shampoos or conditioners or cleansing products.
I wanted to try curlsmith for so long. Finally went for it and spent quite a bit on a variety of products. A cowash, deep conditioner, claiyfying shampoo, shine jelly, a cream and another, different curl jelly. Not one of the products were good for my hair. They really weighed my curls down. The curl cream really drags across my hair and the jelly (both types) simply do not hold!
I thought these were like “holy grail” products bc of the great reviews and I struggled with this issue (fine hair, develops buildup and the shampoos are not strong enough to clarify it) but since I was new to the Method I thought I was doing something wrong this whole time. This was super informative and glad I’m not the only one struggling. Sucks bc they’re pricey too! And it’s too late for me to return them.
I have very high density, very fine, low porosity hair and was suffering from a tonne of build up since moving to a new apartment with combo of (harder water, not great pressure, and a stupid rainfall shower head so all the little holes for the water are super spread apart AND it's really high up and not able to adjust angle or height and I am SHORT). The only thing that has been able to get me a clean scalp and hair my hairdresser has commented is no longer super weighed down with build up is the Curlsmith Blue Line Detox Kit Funnily enough! I tried so many products including like "build up busters" (was unable to get that Malibu one that everyone uses where I live for an affordable amount so didn't try that).
oh and I wash like once every 10+ days so I usually just use the detox kit every wash tbh. So this might be why it suits as I don't use a low poo between
They are horrible for my 3b curly hair high density low porosity . They dry my hair, the shampoo is horrible leaves hair dirty , conditioner doesnt even detangle its like water on my hand. Must have horrible ingredient inside but my hair hates it (i have over 4 products mostly blue line ones horrible avoid it) and it also smells horribly its full of perfume like i just wanna do my hair not smell a bunch of bad perfume
Thanks for sharing Delilah!! I was looking at the scalp detox for my eczema but if it contains the same non water soluble ingredients that's a no go. I have hard water and already need to clarify once a month or so for that so I can get buildup too easily with the water product combo.
I find them very heavy as a high-po, medium density wavy. I have to dilute the conditioner 100%, the scrub irritated me badly and the stylers really clog my hair with even moderate use. The bond salve though I love! It's the one CS product I will be buying long-term.
Yep. I have similar hair & CS products are just too heavy. Weirdly, I can't use the other lines you recommend, and not because of Aloe. I finally found my HG line with Virtue Labs curl line only and volumizing mousse. All the others you recommend have glycerine, and in theory my hair should be fine with film forming humectants in my gel, but it makes my hair sticky in high humid south. Just the curl shampoo and conditioner is amazing. Ethically sourced human hair keratin, and I don't need to bother with masks and such. 1 use and my hair was fuller and less frizz. 5 was the magic number.
I have normal-fine, medium density, tight-coily/kinky hair and I’ve only used their blue line masque called Hydro Creme Soothing mask and I experienced this feeling like something was coating my hair and I couldn’t rinse the product off. A lot of products like she said marked to tight-coils/kinks have these film forming ingredients to make the hair look and feel smooth but that masque would flake off in my hair even though I rinsed it a good many times. I couldn’t take it anymore, threw it out and have since used higher quality ingredients and have no issues.
My hair started thinning within months of using the whole set. Fortunately I have thick hair so it’s not noticeable to anyone else but it did thin out gradually especially at the nape of my neck and it’s no longer as shiny as it used to be after using curl smith. Everything seemed great at first but then I noticed that strands of hair would come off after using their products I thought it was because it was sticky so I ignored it. Then I noticed that the feel of my hair wasn’t as thick as used to be and that freaked me out. Maybe it’s just me but the product overall did not work on me.
Great information. I am 3b, high porosity, thin hair, low density and I do not have any idea what products to choose. I am going crazy, please help me. Thanks a lot
Bonding slave really hasn't done much for my non-damaged hair, neither did Olaplex. Word of caution, while it has protein, it is Not a protein treatment, so don't need to deep condition after. It is very light as it is also not a moisturizer.
I have a video on products for fine hair that would a great place to look. Innersense, MopTop, Giovanni, TreLuxe, Ecoslay are a few I can think of right now
Very fair balanced detailed info thanks I would like to know about great not too pricey leave in conditioners that come in large sizes (32 ounces) I know seems excessive but my 3b curls suck it up!
do you have a list of the items that are more prone to buildup that you mention here? I got the general groups but interested in which agents within those are more likely to cause issues. Thanks!
I do not. Off the top of my head it's polyquats, silicones, thick oils, butters, waxes, and quaternary cationic surfactants (conditioning ingredients) like behentrimonium methosulfate.
Also I'm confused, I've never seen Behentrimonium Metholsulfate in Curlsmith, I've always seen Behentrimonium Chloride as the main conditioning agent. Innersense usually has that ingredient and it has great slip. I know BTMS is usually pricey but that would justify the Curlsmith price tag if had ingredients like that and no PEGs
I wish I had read this 2weeks ago. Just spent 130 on the products, only tried 2 of them but the gel has left my hair unable to dry, super greasy. I'm gutted.
@@HolisticEnchilada thank you for your reply. I tried with far less product and sprayed some water in my hands which has helped. Not likely to purchase the gel again but at least I can use it up now.
What do you mean by water soluble? I’m thinking like oil-in-water suspensions. CS’s products first ingredient is water so I’m thinking you mean something different from what I’m thinking.
Water soluble means that it will rinse off with just water. Water soluble products are going to be the most lightweight and least likely to weigh down hair. They also cause the least amount of buildup.
I have given Curlsmith an honest try, but the several products that I tried just DID NOT work with my hair. My texture, like many of us here, is fine, low density, low porosity. I tried their full styling routine with just tiny amounts of styling product (their air dry cream and Hydro Flex Jelly). Wash day, day one, my hair was a grease ball. I had to re-wash my hair with Twist Ready Reset and continue with two of my favorite stylers. No, just no, to Curlsmith. For me.
I've heard you recommend Jessie curl spiralicious as a humidity proof gel that you also mentioned is water soluble... However it does contain two polyquats which you have said in this video are non water soluble ingredients. Just wanted to clarify if u believe the Jessie curl gel is safe for curlies who are looking to avoid buildup and who have a low to no poo wash routine?
Curl Smith has a cult following, and if you say anything that might sound negative toward them it makes some people angry. It's too bad about that. I can't use any of their stuff, due to the buildup issue, but that does not mean that they are bad. I will say I don't like the over powering scent. My hair is probably more high maintenance than yours as far as products that I can use...it's not easy. If it wasn't for the fact the most of the Evolvh products have chamomile I would use them, but I have a bad allergy to chamomile and a lot of their products use it. It's a member of the ragweed family. Thanks for sharing. I hope that they weren't too mean to you! I know that you mean well
Very insightful! Thank you for sharing! Can you please do a video of fragrance free styling products that are free of essential oils? It’s so hard to find truly fragrance free styling products. I’m very allergic to fragrances and I’m currently using Seen’s curl creme and it works decent but it doesn’t have enough hold for my 2C-3B curls. I tried Jessicurl Spiralicious gel, but it has alcohol and it caused a bad reaction to my skin. Do you have any suggestions for fragrance free styling gels? Thanks in advance!
All these newer lines that people seem to rave about have polyquats and they are just terrible for my hair. I fell for Curlsmith hype and got the detox kit and the detox stylers. i kid you not my hair went totally STRAIGHT by the end of wash day. My curls are fine and about 3b and not damaged or colored. My scalp was so gross and greasy and itchy. I also truly don't understand why they chose that scent and why they made it so incredibly STRONG. It smells like cheap grape kids shampoo dialed up to 100000. Just a total fail for me.
I think part of the problem in the curly world is a lack of understanding that not all curly hair products work for all curls. There are so many things we need to consider when choosing products for our hair but brands are clueless.
I love their protein line - though I haven't tried the shampoo - and I also like their air dry cream (I use less than a dime size amount). The moisture line is too heavy for me - and I haven't even tried the heaviest products. The shower style fixer gives me a really bad flash dry effect & makes my hair feel like plastic. The souffle also makes my hair feel really weird, but I feel like I'm the only one that doesn't like that product lol! Same thing with their scalp detox scrub - people rave about it, but I HATE it! It really strips My hair something awful, and everytime I used it I had clumps of hair falling off My head 😳 I tried using more of the detangling primer, but it didn't matter. However, My hair absolutely LOVES their foam & shape up aqua gel 💜💜
I have very fine high porosity curls and whilst I love the hold I get from the flexi jelly, I find it dries my hair out. Maybe it has something to do with the ingredients you mentioned that aren’t water soluble- maybe they’re building up and not letting water fully penetrate my high porosity hair? I would like to try Evolvh but can’t seem to get it in the UK and looking at Innersense, they tend to contain protein which I don’t need often at all.
That's a possibility, but if you're clarifying it shouldn't be happening. Maybe it's not moisturizing enough for you. Or there's an herbal extract in there your hair is reacting to.
I gave their products two chances over the last 3 years and had to return them mainly because of the fragrance! But I also didn’t enjoy the results. They’re a no for me!
Get a small amount on your hand, emulsify it, then try to rinse it off with just water. If it rinses off easily, it's water soluble. If you need to rub a lot or add soap then it isn't. I have a video on here showing me do this with a few products.
I really like your honest comments. Seems very rare in the on line hair world.
Thank you. I try to share accurate info

I would like to know about great not too pricey leave in conditioners that come in large sizes (32 ounces) I know seems excessive but my 3b curls suck it up!
Why don't you just leave in some of your regular conditioner?
That’s fine but still looking for one as I stopped using devacurl because of hair loss
Raw Curls and Giovanni sell large bottles like that
do you have a list of the items that are more prone to buildup that you mention here?
I'm gutted.
Sorry to hear that. Play around with them and maybe you can find one or more to work out. I do like a few of their products.
Yes, the polyquats in this product are easily removed. I tested rubbing it off with just water and it all came off.

I know that you mean well
Haha they do but so far no one has come after me 😄
How can i order curlsmith products in india without custom charges?
My thick curly hair does not like curlsmith. I tried a few times, and nope, not for me.
What about the new curlsmith collection?
Which one? I haven't tried anything new form them in a while
Very insightful!
I actually don't know of any brands other than Jessicurl that are fragrance free. Have you tried flaxseed gel?
I want to try that detox shampoo because so many love it. But looking at the ingredients I feel like it's just a regular low poo. So we'll see.
I tried the Innersense I Create Hold gel and both times I used it, it flaked on me.
That usually happens if you use too much or apply on hair that isn't wet enough. Happens with other gels too.
I gave their products two chances over the last 3 years and had to return them mainly because of the fragrance! But I also didn’t enjoy the results. They’re a no for me!
How can you figure out if a product is water soluble?
Get a small amount on your hand, emulsify it, then try to rinse it off with just water. If it rinses off easily, it's water soluble. If you need to rub a lot or add soap then it isn't. I have a video on here showing me do this with a few products.
Thank you! That helps :)
They didn’t work half as well as Innersense
I don’t like all the sodium hydroxide in CurlSmith products
What does it do to your hair?
