War pigs is probably the best rock song of all times! Having said that, you should really check out Supertramp brother where are you bound! I would say the best war song ever written! Let me know what you think.
At the time there were a lot of rumors that if you played certain songs backwards, they would have satanic messages on them. So, in reference to that belief going on in society, they ended the song like that. (Like the sounds reversing.) If you dig really deep on google you might find references to a certain Beatles and a certain Rolling Stones songs that were supposed to have messages in them. So, kids were trying to reverse their turntables, way before Rap music was born.
Written during the VietNam war and Sabbath was definitely calling out the evil ruling class. WE should always stand united with those calling out evil.
Not always guys. Sometimes countries get dragged into war, like when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Or when terrorists flew planes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and kill almost 3000 innocent American citizens.
This right here, gentlemen, is where “heavy metal” came from. The original, & in my opinion the best. Every metal band that came after tried to be like them. “Influential” doesn’t do it justice.
And Budgie is considered as the starters of Heavy Metal. Not as dark as Black Sabbath but heavy nonetheless. Look them up and have a listen. Metallica covered a song from them called “Breadfan”. Other songs to name a few “Napoleon Bona Part 1 & 2”, “I Turned To Stone”
I'm a 70 year old Black Sabbath believer and I take pleasure at seeing two young men like you understanding and relating to this music. I really like your reactions so please keep the Sabbath tunes coming - Welcome to the Sabbath family!
The bass in this song is unbelievable. That bass solo behind the guitar solo is quite overlooked and it's crazy how much the bass carries the entire song really if you pay attention.
Great reaction young men….hard to believe I was 6 when this song came out same year as the first Woodstock. I always said people like us, no matter which country, just want peace, love and to provide for our families in security. Many wars are unnecessary and even those which become necessary are initiated by corruption or greed or both. Sorry I’m a year late to the party…this song has remained relevant for 53 years. Wrap your heads around that! God bless! Peace! Wish you both a lot of success!
This came out when the Vietnam War was still raging. This album after it's release sold more in the USA than it did anywhere else in the world. We heard the message and wanted our government to hear it.
Argh! You missed out not watching the Live In Paris version, where you can see Bill Ward THRASH those drums. He was some drummer. The entire performance is brilliant. Gotta love Black Sabbath.
This is one of the greatest rock songs ever produced, brothers. It takes a stance against the established machine we are indoctrinated into from birth. The lyrics, vocals, instrumentation.. legendary. Great reaction!
We had some of that political mumbo jumbo break out just recently, as everyone already knows. Music and the arts are always the ones who attempt to hold theses people's feet to the fire. To see how a culture lived during it's age, check with the artisans and their art. The truth can often be found there.
That's true. I'm really into literature and I've noticed that you can really get a true flavor for how any culture really lived through their literature. You can get a feel for their morality, beliefs, their complaints about politics, their health struggles - everything.
@@Aymungoos Great song as well! I really prefer solo DIO Dream Evil and Holy Diver are both really good albums front to back. Of coarse "Last In Line" is a classic and "Man On The Silver Mountain" from his Rainbow days... But "All The Fools Sailed Away" is my favorite.
Gentlemen, please give it another listen and carefully hear the bass the whole song through. The note choices and style of playing are perfect for the song. This band is a totally incredible blend and each player masters their craft.
the song itself is perfect in my opinion. to me its the song with the strongest message out there executed flawlessly. you start to listen and it captures you and takes you on a trip
Alot of Sabbaths songs are anti politics! Hands of Doom is about Vietnam soldiers coming home addicted to herione and other drugs to bury the pain!! Great song!!
So happy to see you do this one, you two. I would suggest Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for your next Black Sabbath song. Great reaction, stay safe & stay strong!
hi guys. i am from south africa. since 1969 after woodstock, a lot of bands started singing what they saw as happening at the time. most of these bands were banned outright in .S.A. because they were anti-political and anti religious. the ironic part was that as soon as we heard they were banned, just about everyone we knew had a copy within days. bootleg of course. we thrived on the 70's music knowing just about every word of every album banned. NOW. thank you for digging into the past to bands who could write music of which most of them took you on a trip to discover yourself. this is what we grew up with. Dave.
I love watching your reactions! They are so genuine and you both really show appreciation for the music. I’m happy to see your subscriber number rising. I know it will continue to increase. Love you both! Please keep them coming.
It always amazes me when I think of how 'controversial' this band was. With a name like "Black Sabbath", I get it, but there is nothing about music that is anti-religion in and of itself. I'm a Christian, but I'm also a metal head, total music lover and a professional blues singer and musician. To me, all of those things are about inclusivity and equality. I'm also not the type to shove my beliefs down other peoples throat's. So, God bless, and rock on!
I was a teenager when Black Sabbath first came out and their sound was certainly the WOW factor. The "evil" label is because of the heavy / loud sound which was not common in those days. Couple this with their look and album covers. Black Sabbath is not "evil". Matter of fact, I like my music the same way I like my women ...... hard and loud !!!!!!
I’m thinking just the name of the band made them “evil”. As well as some of the names of the songs. It’s people making judgments without knowing facts. Happened then as it does now. Sad. Ozzy is one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. Once I walked in the studio while he was doing an interview, he stood up and insisted I sit because I was a woman!
If you never take the time to really listen to the words, all the words, then it would easy to label them as "evil". Truth is, their whole beginning came about because of a book of black magic that Ozzy gave to Geezer. Who, while being stoned and reading the book, experienced a dark spirit that came before him inside his room. Hense the beginning words to the very first song. "What is this that stands before me?" And even after that Geezer dabbled in black magic for a while before leaving it behind. If you hear the song After Forever, it is very much about God and Light. For anyone to label them as evil is to say that you have not listened to all their songs. So much hope, light, and peace I have gained through the years from their messages. Yes, the beautiful part of their music is the darkness of the sound, the tuned-down guitars, the jamming bass lines, the bombing drums, and the frequent recalling of black magic and death in Ozzie's vocals. But they are really so much about life and death. Before and after. War and peace. A complete band. This is where all metal came from. Thank you for reacting to this classic tune. More, please.
Guys!! This would seem like a vulgar statement but I have to say it.. Once you go "BLACK" you never go back... Try almost all black sabbath songs.. Your minds will be blown to eternity... Try snowblind.. Sweet leaf.. Crazy train.. Mr Crowley.. Also get used to the most ultimate voice on earth.. OZZY.. Take care guys..
When I was a freshman in an all girls Catholic high school we were asked to write a report on someone we admired who was for peace in my religion class in which a nun was the teacher. I wrote out the lyrics to After Forever and read them in front of the class. The nun loved it so much she had me bring my vinyl in the next day so she could hear the song herself. This old nun felon live with Sabbath! Without a doubt my favorite day in that school (I was asked to leave 2 months later, lol). Rock on bros! 💜🤘🏿🎵💜
Sabbath lyrics deal with religious concepts and I believe they are really talking about love but how as human beings we are influenced by dark forces. It is the opposite of the 60s love generation. They are singing about how humanity has fallen.
I am glad you did the album version first versus a video. That way you got the instruments and the lyrics that way. Their live version is good next if you want to try it.
100 percent not evil!! My mother never listened to the words when I would be playing it in my bedroom and she would hear satan or the devil and would say he is a devil worshiper and I would say mom its the total opposite! Ozzy loves God! Always has!

He had to re-learn to play guitar, down tune, get lighter strings and invented this dark heavy sound. Where all of us would have given up, he was driven to create a new sound despite his handicap. We are all grateful that Tony created this sound.
Yeah my parents back in the 80s thought all of this type of music...metal was devil music. They just heard loud and stopped...they didn't actually listen to the message and didn't even give it a chance. A lot like a food you think you don't like...gotta give it a try.
So so good, glad you are digging into more Black Sabbath, as other gave said the live in Paris 1973 is epic, also NIB, Sweet Leaf, Fairies Wear Boots, The Warning and The Wizard and of course Black Sabbath all great songs to check out
The song depicts the horrific gyration of war and the attitude from government and the emotional havoc it creates for society, individuals, families, love ones who leave for war and loves ones who wait for their soldiers return or not.. WW2 was form 1939 to 1945 Members of Black Sabbath( born 1948-49) are from Birmingham England a city known for its blue collar workers smoke stack industrial steel and manufacturing.. The parents/family of the members witnessed WW2 and the destruction it imposed on England(possibly family members were killed in WW2) .. This message of war was most likely echoed to them as children on what the horrors of war are like that just occurred few years before they were born and they were able to express diligently in this song. .. That siren you hear in the beginning of the song( is a real siren sound) was used to sound off to warn the local town/villagers that war attack was emanant, a scary sound to hear during that time with most wondering where to go and hide... A very pivotal song
Masses has two meanings: 1-is whatever group gathering together to plan 2- people going to Church to listen to Sermons (Mass), technically it’s genius. General gathering in their masses (All Generals getting together to plan) Just like Witches at Black Masses (Evil Church)!! Matter of fact they wrote this song against the Vietnam war. As a baby he also survived the bombing of London during WW2! He was really against war!!
"Day of judgement GOD is calling.....on the knees the war pigs crawling....begging mercies for their sins....Satan laughs and spreads his wings".....perfect wording for the war mongarers and politicians 🙏💗🕊️🤴
