  • Nissan Hydraulic lifter rebuild VG30DE Z32 300zx
I share how I disassembled and rebuilt my lifters on a Nissan V6 motor that had the dreaded lifter tick. Replacement lifters cost around $30 each so this is a great way to save some serious cash. I spent about 8 hours on these rebuilds. The process is not my original procedure. More than one Nissan forum has a write up on how to do this , but I wished to share a video on how I did it.

i have a 300zx with 152.3k on it. what kinda of oil would you reccomend to use to clean these buggers out without pulling it all apart?, I'm currently using royal purple 5w30, its been under 32°F here for the last month or so

I have seen others recommend Marvel Mystery oil added to engine, and allow to run for a while, before changing oil and filter. It's worth a try , but heard it is not always effective. Let us know if you have any success. Good Luck

Did the same job on a twincam ca18, same lifter.
Dear god they wher full of junk. once you get a hang of it you can do a "DCOA" of a single lifter in 15~20 minutes.
Better use a sucket to fit around the adjuster and brace against the bottm of the bucket and then tap them free.
One of mine had the same line across the diameter.

Here's a tip. If you take a piece of Scotchbrite and hit all the mating parts you can just throw everything in the carb cleaner at the same time. Didn't lifters that way 9 yrs ago and they are all still good

That you so much for this. Very clear and easy to follow. How long do you think the lifter can last once it makes this noise? I am trying to wait until my next timing belt replacement, but I’m worried with that kindve mileage

Some people have been successful quieting a noisy lifter, with Marvel Mystery Oil. Add some to a warm engine, and run for a short while, then change oil and filter. It may break up the crud inside the lifter. Good luck.

Great video. Looks like a informative channel.
I got a fairlady this summer as well and omg is it ever ticking. I've uploaded couple of videos to my channel cam tour suggest some manuals on the issues that the vg30 has to offer in my case?
    Thanks in Advance

Good to see something repaired and not just replaced.
How did your road racing go?Still doing it?

The cost of replacement lifters was high, so I did the rebuild. I was only in a couple events this year, because this car needed a lot more work than I first thought. Next year I'll be better positioned for more races. Thanks for watching

I am still out here. Videos are a part of my past. When UA-cam demonetized most of my vids, it changed my channel ambitions. Life goes on. Thanks for your concern. Stay safe.

how were you able to tell or diagnose if it was your lifters?

Lifter ticks can be best heard with an automotive stethoscope, to pinpoint location. They usually are louder with a cold engine, and may lessen after warmup. This cars tick was quite noticeable.
