I'm from Chicago originally but moved to Hammond, Indiana when I was a kid which borders Gary. My dad and several family members actually stat in Gary. It's definitely a ghost town and has some shady people but also has many good people as well. I once explored an abandoned school in Gary off 5th Avenue when I was about 16 or 17 and it was scary asf but my cousins friend had a gun on him so we felt safe. My boyfriend explored an abandoned school as well years back but they all got the cops called on them and the cops left them there. It's sad how the American government just leaves its own communities on its own soil like this. America needs to do better for the people of its country. One of my former close friends was actually arrested a month ago for a murder that happened in Gary... I haven't talked to him in 6 months or seen him in 2 years and everytime we did talk I asked him to lay off the drugs and stay out the streets but he never listened to me. It's a sad world and our government doesn't care about us so we have to care about ourselves and each other.
I love that urban farming thing man. That is such a dope idea. I've said for years that EVERY neighborhood should have a community garden that ONLY those who help can use but, they pay with their work and labor to grow it.
I live about 20 minutes away from Gary and always hear bad things about it. “You shouldn’t go anywhere near that area.” This video really gives me a different perspective on things, great work man.

Same here, I've been throughout the city, the goods places and the bad. I'd advise to stay away if you can't handle the pressure from the environment. It's truly a struggle out there, some wish to leave, and some hold other back from leaving, almost like a matrix.

Love seeing someone who grew up near me doing work like this. So many people from the suburbs judge others harshly instead of going out of their way to understand other people’s situations. The way you go about things is so encouraging. It shows everyone’s humanity.
Tommy another great video that shows the way these run down abandoned towns/cities don't have to be full of kids where there's nothing for them except hanging on the streets killing each other. The older generations that put their time and money into creating places like the farm you visited for everyone to get involved is one of the best starting points. Young kids usually love getting involved coming down and helping out growing produce they can eat and rearing animals that also provide food, it gives them a purpose something to do that also helps then shape their futures because they're learning new skills. Inner city London UK the locals started doing ghis aswell because we have alot of knife crime with youngsters and its great to see these kids really enjoying being part of something other than street life.

Man, I lived and worked in Gary back in 2011-2012, and that place is no joke. Met some real ones out there, but it definitely gets gutter. Gonna be a fun episode.
That’s about the time I lived in lake station but was in Gary every other day. Definitely have some of my best & favorite memories from that time & place. Bittersweet to think about.

Continuing to depict the negative environment through interviews or encounters with the police. At this point youve built your world and the Mysterious Protagonist (You) and his consistent fun loving side characters slowly unrevealing their substance/relatability (SOB). I love this because I didn't expect the upcoming twists you experienced to collapse my assumptions. 3. Slowly giving the spot light to positivity by introducing the church members and their garden. Only soon after giving the audience a HUGE unexpected reward with the unknown bystander *doubting the rapper*-- adding to the dialogue with suspicion introducing suspicion to the viewers perspective. Until the SOB member spits the craziest cinematic beautiful song to rap and completely shifts the viewers awareness. I loved this scene. 4. The knockout for satisfaction is the moment you introduced the woman who tells their story better than a Beast Philantropy video, and I love Dan! You crushed the level of story and plot points, your editor crushed the pacing and shot selection. Im rooting for you.

Wow, once again, outstanding journalism from Big Dawg. Culture, well-being, and community are so intricately important for our society. You can see in the beginning how the abandoned church used to be a joint staple for the community, and once it was abandoned, it left a gap in that community. We can see how powerful these institutions are for the community, in the community garden supported by faith community members & volunteers. Job opportunities, hope, and healing sprout from these institutions and give us hope for what our cities could be, not just in Gary but nationwide.

I LOVED the Farmers, pastors and how cool\smart these guys seem. I have family in Crystal lake and I love the downtown area a lot. That said, I grew up in San Antonio TX, and then Harvey IL. back in the 1960's and 70's, and it was a GREAT small town, as well. I LOVED it, and had a great childhood. Everybody knew everybody and I never heard of any serious crimes at all. The mayor was Irish, and most people worked at Allied Steel, Ford in Chicago Heights, or in Gary, IND. Chicago Heights was mostly Italian and generations worked at Ford. Everybody was able to make a good living but then, everything closed or downsided. Ford in Chicago Heights is still operational, but they are down to under 1000 people. They are also on strike. Yes, I have driven buy that building, but would never go in there. LOL
My whole family is from Gary and Chicago seeing this reminds me of how my mom told me Gary just fell apart after the crack epidemic of the early 70s. They’ve always had good musically inclined ppl tho

I had to work in Gary for a few days collecting old books out of schools. Everybody we encountered was beyond kind and respectful. The city looks like shit, but the people living there are genuine.

Born and raised in GI! Things were still good when I was young. Yes , we listed the Murder Cap, but that was because of the population being low to begin with. Ofc things were better before I was born, but a lot of the abandonment took place in the late 90s and early 2000s. Gary has the best food, hairstylist, and much pride amongst our elders. Maybe, because I'm from there, it's not scary, it's home. Never been scared growing up or even now. Grew up on 17th Ave, moved to GP.
I agree. I'm from EC, and we went to Gary for everything until around 99/2000. Things got so much worse then. I was born in 1980, so I remember when Gary had a nice downtown and it wasn't so depressed as an area overall. I miss The Lure! They had the BEST burgers in NWI!!! I think if they brought back more jobs and tore down the abandoned buildings and houses and built the area back up...Gary would be back!!! That's what they're doing in EC right now and it's working. Last time I was home I was impressed with the progress EC is making under their new mayor.

In my experience Gary has some of the warmest/friendlist people in the country. Ive only been a couple times but I absolutely loved the city.

A Filmmaking Critique for Tommy G,
1. You introduced a playful story of a gangster ghost town, but narrated it with a very honest, realistic depiction and tone. Giving the viewer a confident perception of the video and what to expect.
2. You introduced three hoodlums with minimal introduction and lots of dialogue showing natural, purposeless conversation and behavior. Continuing to depict the negative environment through interviews or encounters with the police. At this point youve built your world and the Mysterious Protagonist (You) and his consistent fun loving side characters slowly unrevealing their substance/relatability (SOB). I love this because I didn't expect the upcoming twists you experienced to collapse my assumptions.
3. Slowly giving the spot light to positivity by introducing the church members and their garden. Only soon after giving the audience a HUGE unexpected reward with the unknown bystander *doubting the rapper*-- adding to the dialogue with suspicion introducing suspicion to the viewers perspective. Until the SOB member spits the craziest cinematic beautiful song to rap and completely shifts the viewers awareness. I loved this scene.
4. The knockout for satisfaction is the moment you introduced the woman who tells their story better than a Beast Philantropy video, and I love Dan! You crushed the level of story and plot points, your editor crushed the pacing and shot selection.

Wow, once again, outstanding journalism from Big Dawg. Culture, well-being, and community are so intricately important for our society. You can see in the beginning how the abandoned church used to be a joint staple for the community, and once it was abandoned, it left a gap in that community. We can see how powerful these institutions are for the community, in the community garden supported by faith community members & volunteers. Job opportunities, hope, and healing sprout from these institutions and give us hope for what our cities could be, not just in Gary but nationwide.

I LOVED the Farmers, pastors and how cool\smart these guys seem. I have family in Crystal lake and I love the downtown area a lot. That said, I grew up in San Antonio TX, and then Harvey IL. back in the 1960's and 70's, and it was a GREAT small town, as well. I LOVED it, and had a great childhood. Everybody knew everybody and I never heard of any serious crimes at all. The mayor was Irish, and most people worked at Allied Steel, Ford in Chicago Heights, or in Gary, IND. Chicago Heights was mostly Italian and generations worked at Ford. Everybody was able to make a good living but then, everything closed or downsided. Ford in Chicago Heights is still operational, but they are down to under 1000 people. They are also on strike. Yes, I have driven buy that building, but would never go in there. LOL
My whole family is from Gary and Chicago seeing this reminds me of how my mom told me Gary just fell apart after the crack epidemic of the early 70s. They’ve always had good musically inclined ppl tho

I had to work in Gary for a few days collecting old books out of schools. Everybody we encountered was beyond kind and respectful. The city looks like shit, but the people living there are genuine.

Born and raised in GI! Things were still good when I was young. Yes , we listed the Murder Cap, but that was because of the population being low to begin with. Ofc things were better before I was born, but a lot of the abandonment took place in the late 90s and early 2000s. Gary has the best food, hairstylist, and much pride amongst our elders. Maybe, because I'm from there, it's not scary, it's home. Never been scared growing up or even now. Grew up on 17th Ave, moved to GP.
I agree. I'm from EC, and we went to Gary for everything until around 99/2000. Things got so much worse then. I was born in 1980, so I remember when Gary had a nice downtown and it wasn't so depressed as an area overall. I miss The Lure! They had the BEST burgers in NWI!!! I think if they brought back more jobs and tore down the abandoned buildings and houses and built the area back up...Gary would be back!!! That's what they're doing in EC right now and it's working. Last time I was home I was impressed with the progress EC is making under their new mayor.
