If I make it until Christmas Day, I'll be 28 years off the meth. I mainlined a bunch of it. The cool thing is that I just turned 55 in August, so I've been off the needle for over half of my life. Recovery is possible. You have to want it. If it's worth having, it's worth working for. Merry Christmas y'all.

I want to thank everyone who has been reaching out and being so kind to me. I was really nervous to do this video, but I felt it was important to show others struggling that it’s possible to get sober no matter what you’re addicted to. Congratulations to everyone who celebrated even one day sober today and to those who are still fighting just know that I understand it feels impossible but there’s people all over the world that will help you if you want out. Thanks again for all the love, I definitely don’t deserve it but it means the world to me ❤

My best friend, his dad passed when he was young, from a heart attack.. His mom got badly burned cooking meth. He was like fifteen at the time, and his mom was in the burn center for some time. When she was able to leave the burn center, she was prosecuted. She got around three yrs in prison. The whole time she was going through that, he was at home alone. He continued to go to high school and worked at Sonic to pay all the bills.. After his mom got released, he allowed his mom to come live with him, because she had nowhere else to go. He loved his mom, even after all that happened, he gave her a place to lay her head.

Two years ago I took a road trip through this area and ended up on the Little River Canyon Rim Pkwy. It was a midweek day and we seemed to be the only car on the drive. After a few miles and a couple stops for pictures, I noticed an old 1980s Pontiac that seemed to be following us. I pulled off a final time to see if he would follow, and he did. I immediately cut a u-turn and passed right past him and saw one of the most gaunt, methed out faced I've ever seen, gawking at us. Needless to say that was the last stop we made. Originally from RI - found myself settling in Scottsboro, AL temporarily after I got back from overseas during the pandemic and visited my parents in Mentone, AL. I probably hear the term "meth mountain" at least once a month.
Alabama is beautiful and I highly recommend checking out the southern way of life versus where I come from up North - it's definitely got some perks.
But just like everything that is beautiful in life, there's also the ugly side - whereas pills and heroin wreaked havoc on everyone I grew up with in Rhode Island, down here pills and methamphetamine seem to have taken just as many lives. Nowadays it looks like fentanyl is killing everyone everywhere.
I'm glad I made it out alive over 10 years ago.
Awesome episode and glad to see Sweet home Alabama getting the coverage even if it isnt the best. Go check out Burrillville, RI next.

If it's Meth, it's more mental than a physical addiction. It won't feel great stopping, but you won't die cold turkey.
No matter what drug, how long etc, they will assist with withdrawal symptoms but it still requires your participation and commitment. I know for me, coming off drugs was like having the devil sucked outta me. Fact if the matter is that it's possible as many on here are attesting to. It's never too late, you can never be too young or to old.
I remember wishing I would just die in my addiction...until it began happening. Then I panicked and ran for help. I found it and a whole new life was granted me. I never looked back. F*ck poison.

Man, I appreciate your contact and what she got through... I've had 7 levels of fusions in my spine and multiple surgeries. I was oblivious to addictions and how prescription painkillers affect people until I was finally feeling pretty good after about 6 years of recovery from the surgeries and fusions but I had absolutely no clue how horrible it would be to get away from pain meds. Doctors and books claim you can just taper, easy peasy and symptoms are flu like which is the biggest lie ever told!!! Problem is, doctors who haven't experienced it believe what they were told. Flu-like for about a week, can't kill you, etc. Absolute BS thrown out by the big pharma companies so they can sell their product.
Then when you actually try to get some help with it, the doctors step around the door and giggle with their nurses about the junkie, addict in there. Police do the exact same thing while someone is literally puking and shaking to death in their cells like they all brought it on themselves and they are so far above that! It is truly disgusting as they laugh while they watch people die and then act surprised or pretend it must have been something else.
It is easy to see how people who have been severely injured and given pain meds turn to the street after they get nothing but ridiculed and treated as junkies by the same community who prescribed it in the first place. The only thing they do is send people to a "Pain Clinic" where they keep them going so people don't get sick and if they decide they want to get away, these doctors just get pissed off and cut them off cold turkey to "Teach them a lesson about who is in control" until they come back and start padding pockets again.
What is really interesting is that doctors get people on suboxone and methodone to get them off things like morphine and oxycodone which as the guy you interviewed said is probably worse to get off than anything...

If I had gotten therapy or just talked about my feelings I would’ve avoided 8 years of wrecking my body and mind. But we got out and that was a big reason I did the video, I want to destigmatize addiction and recovery because people will never want help if it comes with even more judgment and strings attached as in the streets. Thank you for sharing your story with me. XOXO

My wife’s family is from that area. Her half sister just “got clean” after 11 years on meth - following the death of her son at age 20 due to a lumberyard accident (where a methhead was high on the job & let an 800lb log fall off the back of a truck and crush him). My wife was about to head back down to Attala for his wake & help her sister clean up her home. Due to her getting COVID, we both were in quarantine when it happened & she had to cancel the trip…the day before her sister got caught trafficking $76,000 worth of meth & meth-making chemicals for the illicit purpose of manufacturing methamphetamine (not exactly sure that’s how the charge is labeled but the jist of it).
Every single person in her car on the way to the wake is now facing 20+ years in prison plus fines none of them will ever have the ability to pay back. Just thankful my wife has officially cut ties with them.

I had just got home from my second tour in Iraq, my wife just left me, took my son from me and the courts gave her my car that she stole from me while I was at work. I ended up quitting my job and just wanted to die. So thankful I found my way out. I never did any of the drugs I’ve done to escape from my problems, I did them to have a good time. That’s why it was easier for me to lay them down and never look back, my uncle was the same way. So my uncle never really got that love that he needed. So he turned to drugs and ended up getting hooked on meth. Started hanging around some goons and started robbing. Went to jail a time or two for a couple years each. Lost his wife, his daughter, his son came around though and they have a pretty good relationship now. I love my uncle, I see a lot of myself in him. All this bullshit to say, even at their lowest you have to still find a way to love your people, it might be exactly what they needed.

I think in many parts of the US, rural and urban, drug dealing and selling is one of the few "living wage" job opportunities.
Those who are young and healthy enough to join the military often do (men and women), but there aren't many other job opportunities other than working for Wal-Mart. That's why so many people in US military are from Deep South and other rural areas.
Our government allowed company CEOs to send their factories to 3rd world countries so they could pay bottom-dollar wages to foreigners to manufacture items to sell back to us, so decent factory jobs disappeared for the blue collar workers. Our appliances and other items used to be made in the US decades ago.
The fact most of our companies moved factories to China and Mexico, etc, was a big controversy in the 80s when I was a kid, but people have forgotten all about this phenomenon.
Rural farms also went bankrupt in the 1970s-80s, and now most of our farmland is owned by tech moguls. Farm work that used to hold up the blue collar rural Americans has also disappeared, and/or illegal undocumented migrants are used to work on farms.
