The Mudguard the CB1000R SHOULD Have Had from the Factory!

- The stock plastic mudguard on the Honda CB1000R is an abomination!
It's a huge piece of unpainted plastic on a bike that prides itself on it's stylish aluminium trims and finishes. What's more, it's not even very good! It's structurally weak and flaps about in the wind like a spaniels' ears (I dare you to look down at yours from above while you're doing over 70 mph), while simultaneously allowing so much crud to hit the engine and radiator, that both have great big patches where all of the paint has come off, even thought the bike is only just over 2 years old!
Thankfully SW-Motech has come to the rescue and given me one of their Aluminium Fender kits for my CB1000R, so that I can finally do away with the plastic monstrosity and have a front end that looks the way it should from the day it left the factory.

Yup, really like the new aluminium mudguard but very surprised with the lack of protection to the forks. That's going to be really expensive when the forks scratch or chip.
Very true. I was thinking that some Ally fins attached to the frame could do the deflecting work and still look like they belong. Just need to find materials...

On reflection I think the fork protection on the stock mudguard is a must TBH
For full on touring, I totally agree. Those stanchions need to be sheltered from the road muck. But seeing as how I believe Honda intended this as a poser and city bike, for the fair weather riders I'm sure it'll never be an issue. Maybe some DIY Ally panels attached to the framework would do the job.

Thanks for posting. A definite improvement over the plastic covers. A Norway trip? Good for you. We had communicated a few months ago about our (wife and I) trip to Norway. We had a blast. You will too (if you have not left yet). Although we were strongly warned about speeding tickets, I never saw a police officer the two weeks we were there riding.
My pleasure! Norway was utterly astonishing. Very much looking forward to sharing. We did see some coppers and even had the 'opportunity' to exchange words with them. But only so they could show us where the nearest bakery was!! 😂
that is great improvement to the look. If I hadn't (recently) written my 2019 cb1000r off by hitting a tree I would most likely add one myself.

Very much so! The garage will likely make another appearance soon enough, but the lighting in there is a bit rubbish and in summer it's full of mozzies!

Looks much better for sure. I imagine there are aftermarket neoprene fork protectors that can be clamped or velcro attached that would work well and look ok.
I think you're certainly right. Maybe even just for the winter and remove for the sunny days where there's less grit on the streets!

Andy, all Japanese bikes have crappy cheap bolts, because they are built to a price, you're better off replacing them all with stainless steel, check out race bolt, for much loveliness and they won't corrode....
Or Pro-Bolt - equal on quality and a fair bit cheaper imo
Yeah this is sadly true. It's possible of course that my old Yamaha FZ1 had the bolts switched by the last owner. They were all like NEW after 14 years!
I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not a fan of the looks of that mudguard. 🤷♂ It doesn't quite fit into the design of the bike IMHO. I do agree the plastic mudguard is also undesirable though.

No, never did. I sat on it briefly and was a little tight for me. Sadly it is no more. The reasons for which will be revealed at the start of the Norway series.

Very observant of you! I had a long list of stuff that needed doing before Norway, so I thought that perhaps NOT being 3 sheets to the wind by the end of the day was the best way to get through it all! 😂 It seems that Germans require 2 things when buying a bike. Stock setup and full service history. I tried to shift it with all the stuff on, and nobody was interested! Then I tried without, same story because of the impending 24k Service. I'm looking at 4,000€ depreciation over 2 years, or 800€ for the service (if I'm lucky) and 3,500€ depreciation. This bike was an ERROR!!

It took 2 weeks to get the bolts for the rear sprocket change and at a total cost of 70€!! For 6 nuts and bolts! 🤦♂️
Thought I'd throw this out there, beware of loctite with plastics, it can cause crazing. Use the right one. Also, if you thread a cable tie through the holes in the monstrosity you removed it would make for a great ski helmet in case you accidentally ski off a ledge. You might even make it over the Strait of Dover. 😎
Good to know! Though I don't think I've ever used loctite on plastics. They normally have self tapping screws for that use. Good shout on the ski helmet. I'll keep it handy! 😂

Did you get rid of the belly pan? I think the fork protection is fairly vital TBH I'd at least get some sort of gaiters or something for them but that might make it look worse...
I had a short argument with the TÜV inpector about wether I was allowed to have it or not. SW-Motech assure me it's all good, so it's back on now!
It looks more like a fender extender :D you should've bolt it on the old one! :D kidding. But... no 30 fps - no like ! Kidding again - I gave it a like, although very reluctant to do so !

Hi Andy. Do you think to change CB on something else? Maybe some of ADV sect? ) Got '21 Versys 650 instead of '09 CBF600 and finally felt some comfort on rides longer than 200km.
Actually yes. Norway showed me that this is simply the wrong bike for the big tours and seeing as how the big tours are the ones that I want to do, it's time to move up to a bigger bike. Sadly the depreciation on the Honda is astronomical, so I've not got much spending power to work with for the next machine 😓

@@AndyManCam why I have never bought a new Honda. They are great bikes and with minimal servicing, they go for ever, engine wise. But the electrics are iffy and they use cheaper parts

Its all a personal choice and taste... but, that aluminum air deflectors in front of the front forks are absolutely rubbish (too short) Not giving those chrome portions the full coverage/protection they need, especially the upper portion close to the fork seals... I feel sad with that aftermarket piece and I would call that a down grade. 😉
