Excellent review! This review covered mostly was everything I wanted to know. I’ve booked an appointment with my local Tonal store for a demo. As someone with a packed daily schedule, it’s been tough to maintain my gym routine. I’m hoping if I get a Tonal, I’ll be able to keep a strict workout schedule.
For anyone concerned about the bruising, this can be avoided entirely by properly positioning yourself so that the cables don't contact your body. There are videos on youtube from other creators that specifically cover this issue. But just to reiterate, if you are getting bruises from your Tonal it is because you are not properly positioned. This is true of any cable system by the way, not just Tonal.
Yes and no, there are some exercises that are completely unavoidable where the cable is going to hit your arm somewhere. And it has nothing to do with positioning. But this should be expected either way.
@@Maynardd I only half agree. I actually have a Tonal so I can speak directly from experience with this machine. Yes, there are some moves where the cable will contact your arm if you are doing a full range of motion. That said, you should still never get a bruise or even sore spot from this contact even if you did 100 reps of that move. If the cable is contacting you in a way that is causing direct bruising or sores because of the cable contact, then I stand by my original post that you are not positioning yourself properly for a cable machine.
@@nzpc2005 Then I guess every single tonal video where the cable is rubbing on the person depending on the exercise are being done incorrectly. And as you talk about range of motion, if you’re not doing full range of motion when you should be, then you’re just selling yourself short. Long ago I used a bow flex for several years, depending on the exercise it is completely unavoidable to not have the cables on you at some point, I never I had a problem with this. I never said it should cause bruising or anything like that, but the cable is going to touch you, or rub you at some point. Depending on the exercise, if it’s not then you’re not doing it incorrectly. I also stand by my original post. Each to his own I suppose.
I agree with everything you’ve mentioned here. I have had mine a month in a half. I notice a huge difference in my body composition. It’s an amazing piece of equipment. Worth every penny. I’m 51 and have had health issues the last 4 years but this thing is changing my life for the better. You can’t put a price on health. It’s everything.
I just bought one I am 52 gained 70 pounds over last 18 months. Down 27 pounds, bit have at least another 40 to go. I have been Walking a lot and hoping the resistance training will help jump start my metabolism.
Hi! I did research and ordered a tonal. I am 48, full time job and full custody of two sons. I am very busy and will never make it to the gym. And when I do lift weights at the gym, I hurt myself. It seems like Tonal will help me prevent injuring myself and that in itself is worth it’s weight in gold.
My big question is once the hype of tonal is gone possibly 2 or 3 years down the line or if they come out with upgraded models will they do this like any other "smart" device and stop doing updates for it? Something to consider if you are connecting a specific apple watch to the system will the new apple watches and devices that connect down the road still link with a 3yr old tonal? I think along the lines of things like the smart fridges sure they were great when the hype was big but once that model was obsolete they stopped doing updates for the features. You really can't even keep a smart phone more than 2yrs now without expecting update issues with it. I'm highly suspect of this happening down the line.
There is no WAY I'm going to buy a machine for $3k and then have to pay a subscription. You can get a cable machine for half that price and you're not bound to a tech startup that could fail.
I love the tonal, and think it’s worth it. but if you want to only think about price you really don’t need to waste money on equipment period. Just use body weight like inmates.
@@reggiew5514 that’s a ridiculous response. The price is outrageous, only because they force that membership, you have to pay $250 for shipping, $250 for installation, and $500 for a bar, a $40 bench that doesn’t even incline, and two Bluetooth grips that are worth $30. The total package should be $3000 with everything including lifetime access. Because it’s digital what do you do if the company goes out of business? And eventually they will. Own it, love it, worth every penny. Funny people will blow thousands on nice clothing and a fancy car when they could get around in something less but when it comes to putting money towards their health with good food, exercise, and a nice mattress they want to be cheap. Think of this like a car except you'll show off with your body instead of polished metal. Plus you'll feel great both physically and mentally.
I would get tonal but I feel like they need a 2.0 or something new , Definitely more weight then 200 pounds imo , closer to 500 if they could , and etc
I watched another video where the guy said "If you're complaining about the price of tonal, you've never priced quality home gym equipment." For the money, it's amazing.
Great video, one more thing you’re going to hate about it, if you cancel the membership after the mandatory year, they also will take away the weight modes such as smart flex, eccentric and burn mode. Which makes no sense because those are features that come with the machine and Tonal is not spending a penny to its employees for this feature. I understand they would take away access to the training videos, that’s what the membership gives you access to.
Great video. My hold up is that the functionality is very limited without the 50/month subscription. It seems they should have more base fiction after spending so much on the unit itself.
I think its pretty much industry standard. I know Peleton does the same. I can tell you after owning it for a couple months the content is absolutely worth the $50 a month. If it were free, they essentially would have no revenue base to continue developing fresh content and owners would start hating the repetitive experience. Just my opinion.
Wow, thanks a lot for these reviews. I'm almost 48 and I really need to get in better shape. I would like to strength and cardio but gyms do not seem like a great option for me for basically the same reason you spelled out in one of your other videos. I do not like the price lol, but that seems to be the only downfall and if it gets me to my goals then that is definitely worth it. Great job!
Thanks Dennis I appreciate that. I can tell you that Tonal is worth every penny but that certainly doesn't mean it is affordable by no means. It really has impressed me more than I could have expected.
Hello Dennis, when I got mine and used it a bit, I told my wife, thank god this was not priced at $8000, and it would even be worth it at that price (what is the price tag on ur health??). This complaint about price (it is only $4000) I don't get, step out and see how many cars $40k and more you see out there, and $4k is too much for a life changing experience? assuming you are disciplined about usage. I hope you find my comment helpful, as a lot of silly and misleading nay Sayers are out there . Take Care and go get one with confidence :)
Unless you are lifting really heavy, a pair of dial adjustable 1090 dumbbells and a utility bench would be the far more affordable option. They go from 10-90 pounds. That is plenty of weight for most people. Doesn't take up much space either. $700 for the pair of dumbbells and maybe $200 for an adjustable utility bench. $900 investment with no monthly subscription.
Nice video. I just purchased mine yesterday. I see you have a EZ curl bar hanging from your accessory shelf. My accessory package did not have that option. Where did you get yours?
G-Money, great video but talking about price. If someone goes for the monthly payment your talking about $64+around $50 for the app you need to download and subscribe to. If you don't subscribe you'll get almost nothing from the console so you lose out on all the performance measures available. Your paying $110 a month to own the Tonal. I think the monthly subscription is high. What are your thoughts? Best wishes. MIchael
Just got mine...I too have been trolled for spending the money...but like you said, if it improves my life and helps keep me more consistent, it's worth the cost. My first workout was this morning and it was great! This machine is LEGIT
I don’t understand that complaint. I am debating between the tonal or something like the inspire FT1 and they are pretty much the same price. The FT1 has the capacity to lift heavier weights but the Tonal is a much smaller footprint. The Tonal for what it is seems very competitively priced with the option for guided workoutS via a subscription if you want.

I LOVE MY Tonal! I do agree with 3 of your 4 Negatives to some extent (No squeak and no bruises from my Tonal), but have no issue because those Negatives outweigh having to trek to the Gym in all kinds of inclement weather plus the time, gas money to get to gym and crazy Gym membership dues than having to deal with dirty machines and weights is just not for me. As a germophobe, I'm extremely happy with my Tonal and working out at home at any given time of day 24/7 is a major plus. Best investment of my life!
Can two or more people work out on it simultaneously? My son and I or my girlfriend and I usually train together. This would a huge determining factor.
No, not simultaneously. You can't alternate sets either unless you are willing to log out and log in every time. I imagine that will get real old real fast.

Getting Tonal installed later today, and doing some last minute research....lol. Was scared when I originally saw this, but looks like issues weren't that bad.

Your comment lacks genuine intent. First, why would it be a 5K brick when it only cost $3,500. Second, why would it also have no value in a few years? Even a used treadmill still has value. Third, you clearly have zero understanding of the training aspect of Tonal and are commenting as if Tonal is merely doing the same thing dumbbells and an adjustable bench is doing. This comment is comically simplistic with a lack of any real attempt to understand the thing you are criticizing.

@@UnbearabIe if you listen to what I say clearly then look up the definition of ignorant maybe you can come back with something else. The definition of ignorance is lacking awareness. My point is that I am hyper aware of how non-engaging traditional weight training is for a significant percentage of adults with busy lifestyles. My entire point is that Tonal makes it easy and enjoyable to engage without needing to devote large chunks of your day to going to a gym, or using an entire room of your house to build out racks of physical weights. To say it is ignorant is ignorant in itself.
@@UnbearabIe as you said, one modality of training isn’t superior to another but the point you are dismissing is that I COULD just perform body weight training but I DIDN’T because it wasn’t engaging. Not sure why you are arguing what is better for me, I certainly am not trying to tell you what is best for you either. It might be worth the money to you but it’s not unique in what it does. There are tons of different ways to build muscle and get in shape and all of them are cheaper than Tonal.
I know of no other home gym that has digitally guided high intensity interval training by a personal trainer that takes less room than any other traditional cable machine on the market. The value assessment is not just $$ spent = built muscle output. It is the delivery method, user experience, and its ability to keep you engaged combined that define the value. So while it is accurate that there are many different ways to build muscle, to say Tonal isn’t unique in what it does is either an opinion formed with little product knowledge, or incredibly disingenuous and it can only be one of those two things.
Fantastic breakdown again bro! Not sure if this video might help with the bruising: ua-cam.com/video/yShdfyt8Ikk/v-deo.html I also wanted to mention that sometimes the rail will squeak depending on the angle that the arm is sitting (and also the weight of the accessory you're using) at the time that you try to move it. Can't wait to get back in shape. Are there any discord or user resources you'd recommend?
1 thing I hate about tonal - I ordered it a month ago and still do not have it on my wall for at least another month.
Yeah it is a long wait but I can assure you, it IS worth it.
I ordered mine on 11/1. They told me I would have it within a week.
Trying the demo tomorrow in NY. I have the Tempo now.
Let me know what you think.
Ou yeah let us know comparison
Another great video, thanks
Thanks.
Thanks for this. Where did you get the shelf?
Sorry didn't see you had another comment. I made the shelf, it was a ton of work and too much money. Got carried away with that project.
Thanks for the video!
You bet!
The need to make a version that is a movable stand
When are you posting another video on tonal??? I have enjoyed your reviews on it!
I will have one coming soon. Probably 2-3 weeks or so.
Did the test it first?
How much do the accessories cost total (minus the mat)?
$3,000 00
$3000 for the machine $500 for the accessories and $250 for the install
@@LB-ew3nl and 250 for shipping.
“So this is just now the top 4 things I hate” lol love the video and feedback. Thanks.
I could see a difference in your stomach when they first installed it vs this video. You showed yourself right after they installed
It cost to much and monthly fee
I am terribly old school. Due to a bad back and neck, I don't much beyond hiking anymore...If it works for you and you use it consistently, good for you. That's all that matters. I'll tell you, the hardest workout I've done in recent memory is boxing. I have tried the heavy bag. If you get serious, it will wear you out pretty quickly, but then I am an old fart.
I thought about getting a heavy bag too. I still might.
Horse mats work also. And they are cheaper.
My Tonal is finally delivering today! T minus 20 mins! 😂😂
pump
How do you like it so far?
@@geoffreyward4929 I’ve done a couple workouts so far and I’m so sore. It checks all the boxes for me. Hands down the most advanced trainer. If you demo one you’ll want one.
@@EatLotsOfCurry yeah I demoed it and was exhausted. It really gives you a work out. Mine should be delivered in 30 days. Fantastic machine.
“This is now just a Top 4……”
Hahahaha
That’s awesome.
I can’t get my Apple Watch to pair with my peloton 🤯
Isn't that super frustrating?
@@GearsGadgets it totally sucks. I can handle an 800 pound vessel filled with a highly flammable liquid but I cant get an apple watch to pair??? haha. ARGH!!!
@@TeriAnderson Great way to describe a bike lol. Just checked out your page
Investment in health is never a waste of money.
As far as the bruising on your arms, just move backwards a step so the cables aren’t rubbing on your skin. Doesn’t seem overly complex.
thank you!
I tuned in because 5 things I Hate other then that he bundle problem it seams solid. Like a good investment. Maybe 5 things I dislike.
Why doesn't it just use NFC for the pairing? The treadmills at my gym use this and it is seamless.
I would like the DIY because maybe they would she to Canada 🙃.
Why not just get a pair of adjustable dumbbells and a FID bench? In a few years, this thing will be a 5k wall brick.
@@GearsGadgets clearly I didn't buy into the marketing hype. Do what works for you. I'll check in again in a few years to see how the electronics are holding up.
@@antster7 as I said in my video prior, if this thing changes my life for the better (already has) and is more effective than any gym or home equipment ever had been (drastically has), then it would have been worth lighting $3,500 on fire for those results. It’s not marketing hype if it works my man. Also, interesting enough their marketing is under hyped which leaves people like you forming incomplete uneducated opinions. Clearly you don’t need or want it which is fine, but I can assure you that your opinion is clearly from the position of someone who has never touched it and lacks any true context.
I didn’t HAVE to spend 3.5K, I WANTED to spend 3.5K because this modality of training was better for me. Not sure why you are arguing what is better for me, I certainly am not trying to tell you what is best for you either. I merely presented the best solution that worked for me and it likely would (and does) work for others. If you have a better or different way, fire up a camera and share your story so people have more information to decide what’s best for them, this comment banter isn’t really good for anyone except your self aggrandizing assurance that your way is superior to my way. Different strokes for different folks.
You can work harder and get it done without Tonal but I can see without having a Tonal, this machine is so much fun to use.
Fantastic breakdown again bro! Not sure if this video might help with the bruising: ua-cam.com/video/yShdfyt8Ikk/v-deo.html
I also wanted to mention that sometimes the rail will squeak depending on the angle that the arm is sitting
(and also the weight of the accessory you're using) at the time that you try to move it. Thanks again for a great review!
Thanks I appreciate it. You are killing it with Tonal content. Keep up the good work, I'm sure your channel will grow because of it.
@@GearsGadgets thanks brother, it's a privilege to try to help others! Really appreciate your channel as well! ✊✊✊

Also the Tony Horton workouts are awesome. They are a newer style where the trainer does the workout with you.
Can you have multiple user profiles ?
Yes. Unlimited in your household.
Does Tonal pair with Androids?
I don’t believe so but I would imagine it’s coming.
This is lame I went from 300 to 220 kicking a bag

Hilarious that you couldn't get it to squeak. Like going to the doctor.
Lol, I can never see myself using this lol! Give me a barbell and a bench and I’m good.
Fair enough, not everything is for everyone.
How will they make money
True , IMO , it's basically for lazy people not willing to actually do physical exercises or work .
@@georgeosborn3553 in my opinion you’re opinion is ridiculously narrow minded. You are saying high intensity interval training physically lifting weights isn’t work or exercise? Cave man need gym!!!!! Is only way!!!!!
@@GearsGadgets no , I'm not saying everyone needs a gym , actual physical exercise ( as in not standing there pulling on a few steel cables ) where one is really working the muscles. Look at all the obese people & out of shape people , they just sit and do no physical activities & then think a 15 minute stient on these machines is gonna really help .
He hates the price but says it's worth every penny lol
Yes two things that can be true. I hate the price of a Bugatti too but if I could afford it I might buy it even though I hate the price.
@@GearsGadgets there is a difference between being able to afford and being rich, I wouldn't buy a ferrari if I could afford it, but I probably would if I were really rich
@@GearsGadgets I'm going tomorrow to pick up a used tonal, could you give me the measurement from floor to bottom of bracket the unit hangs on
@@CbrF4i600cc you’re right. Everything is relative but just because you’re rich and can afford a Ferrari doesn’t mean you love the price of it. Difference is when you can afford premium things, price is less of an objection, doesn’t mean you can’t still have a opinion about that price and wish it were cheaper. If you buy that Ferrari because you’re rich and hate the price, you can still come back around to determining it was worth every penny to you but it might not be worth every penny to another guy. You dont pay for installation its free and all the smart accessories are free also. Its clear u dont like the device but u made a lot of assumptions without even researching it first.
Installation definitely isnt free- its price inclusive but definitely not free. The same point he made with the bundle- it should be standard even if the base price increased
@@marcusmoss846 yea u right i just bought it the other day came to 3900 dollars.
THAT HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST HILARIOUS PILE OF SH1T I'VE EVER SEEN -- BEEN USING A TOTAL GYM XLS OR EQUIVALENT FOR 20+ YEARS & NEVER LACKED FOR ANYTHING -- HALF THE PRICE -- I CANT STOP CHUCKLING
Spoken like someone who has no clue what they are criticizing. At 200lbs Total gym only offers 98lbs of resistance compared to Tonal’s 200 lbs and that’s just the beginning. Your Total gym only wins on price, loses hands down every other metric imaginable. To say Total gym works for you is fine, but the fact you are “chuckling” is hilarious. Total Gym is 1/2 the price with 1/4 of the functionality of Tonal.
