Former Tempo owner here. What pushed me to Tonal were two key things. Feeling unsafe doing free weights squats without a squat bar (I had the original) & changing out weights mid workout. Moving Tonal’s arms is much faster. I can change weights on Tonal in 1 lb increments and on my watch. I also go to the gym. The combo of Tonal and the gym are perfect. The bad is that Tonal relies on working tech. If anything goes awry, you can’t workout on it until it’s fixed. But in NYC, there’s a Tonal store with a machine for such a case.

Tonal increases the weight as your strength increases and gives you constant feedback like when you accomplish a personal best as well as a 3 part ongoing strength score. That motivates me in a way I haven't been motivated before. My goal is just to keep fit. If you have different goals maybe another system would be right for you.
I have the Tonal. It literally takes seconds to adjust the arms between workouts. Not tedious or cumbersome at all. I also have a squat rack and after using Tonal, I despise having to load/unload the bar between sets. The Tonal is just a press of a button, even if you want to simulate chains.
@@sowmithyashu916 you can use the very basic lifting functions without a subscription, but you lose all of the “smart” features. There is form feedback in terms of range of motions and rate of movement. You can also use the Tonal app to video record a side profile view to see your form and get some feedback (this feature is new and a little buggy, but I suspect it will get better).
Based on Coop's reviews, I recommended Tonal to my parents who are their 60s/70s. They liked the idea, but the upfront cost, along with the subscription, was a bit too much for them to swallow.
If these were what were in my garage, I would never go train. But this morning I got to do chin-ups and dips, lift a 150# sandbag, and bench press with a Rogue barbell inside of a Titan squat stand on a REP bench. So good.
I don't know if you will ever go, but there is a gym in Lancaster, PA called Spooky Nook. It's the biggest sports complex in the United States. You should at least cover what's in the gym if you don't go and tour it
For bodybuilding, Tonal is more than enough with 100lbs per hand 'torsional not gravitational resistance'.👍 For powerlifting strength training, them 100lbs in certain exercises will be a limiting factor. But I doubt Tempo aims to be marketed for powerlifters, OBVIOUSLY NOT. : )
I think for an individual who wants to get into resistance training for health/wellness, but is hesitant/scared to join a gym, AND truly wants a solid plan (and so much so they are willing to invest), these are great options! Low footprint, guidance for training, resistance/weight. For many of us that follow this channel already that have learned to love lifting heavy S!HT, maybe not so much?
Coop, thoughts on the Tonal as a functional trainer replacement in a low-ceiling gym (80 inch to the joist)? Rep FT-3000 is slightly too big/bulky for my space and the freemotion dual lite could fit but is more expensive and also takes up a lot of space. I’ll lose some functionality with the arms extended high but the Tonal seems like the best bet. I’d have to pay for the sub for a year but maybe I or my wife could get some use out of that.
Tonal all the way. The 200 lb limit is only an issue for squats and deadlifts if you're into powerlifting. Also, the arms take 5 to 10 seconds to adjust which is no problem. I love the programs and coaches too.
@@daniel8489 200 is plenty for me right now. I use it mostly for hypertrophy work so I haven't needed more than 150 on bench so far. And that's with around a 315 max bench
Team Amanda! Tempo rocks! My issue with Tonal is you have to be super close to it, and it looks like the arms wobble, that would weird me out. I own a Tempo and love it. Most home gym goers have dumbbells and Barbells/plates already. Just get the base Tempo and you're good to go!!!
Has guided workouts, huge screen so it's not like watching it on your phone or tablet. Has entire programs, community etc. As someone who doesn't know how to program it gives me exactly zero friction for working out. I don't have to research anything, I just show up and get coached. It's dope.
The wife insisted we get her an exercise bike (MYX). Well the bike physically works without a subscription. But none of the tracking will work (electronics are completely useless) without the subscription. Here we are paying 30$ a month for classes she doesn't use. the bike sits there just taking up space and being a blood sucking bat on the bank account. I can cancel the membership but if she goes back to it after the subscription is cancelled the monthly cost will go up to 40$ a month. I straight got extorted. You buy any of these electronic systems that work with or require a subscription be prepared for the price of that subscription to be increased with absolutely no recourse besides trying to sell the equipment onto the next victim.
@@pleton80 I think for me no monthly fee is part of the idea, but the tonal and tempo are intended to have a monthly fee. As is the exercise bike that was purchased for the wife (and my point was that you cannot expect to have the price stay the same - especially if you want to cancel your sub while say the wife is pregnant or you get an injury that precludes use of the thing). The other part is I have two small children. I can workout in the garage while they sleep (baby monitor and all) but I can't take my baby monitor and go to the gym a few miles away.
I'm on team use real weights and am not a fan of strictly resistance. I just don't get the same results from resistance training as I do from holding on to physical weights. I started with the old solo flex, then was using a bow flex, then when I switched to barbell and dumbbell I seen a massive increase in results
So, this Tempo is great, as long as you have plenty of plates & dumbbells, which I already have. Sorry, what do I need it for? At least the other one has internal resistance, although a good functional trainer would be better. They both just seem like ways to extract cash from noobs.
Five years of Tonal (49*12*5 + 3000 + 500) is about 6440 and the Tempo is supposedly similar, and that assumes that this thing will actually work for 5 years. The warranty is 1 year for parts and labor and 2 more years for parts only. I think for 6k you could buy a lot of gear that would still be in good shape after 5 years (or even 20years) without a subscription. I know it isn't as compact but how much is it worth to be able to park your car in your garage? For those of you without a garage or shed.... well 6k will buy you a lot of gym memberships. - you could spend 1k a year of gym equipment for 7 years for basically the same price. I doubt that this machine will still be functioning after 7 years.
What about people that don’t want to work in a cold, humid or scorching garage? - install heater and ac you say? But they live in an apartment complex with a open communal garage. What about people living as roommates in a rental? What about people that need the garage for wood working? What about…. You get the point. Personally i put all my equipment in on fo the rooms but then i live in a house that i own so that is not the case for a lot of people.
@@hby7768 Honestly... I would say get a gym membership. BTW if you are a renter your probably not supposed to mount this thing on the wall without permission. Alternatively, an ipad, a good set of adjustable dumbells, maybe an adjustable bench, and a few kettle balls and you would be better off.
@@dylans2669 The rules of renters or people that own apartments varies on what can and can not be done so tempo or any device like it can still have its philosophy applied. And the the time for you to drive to the gym, park, get back in the car and drive home, you can finish a full workout already. Time management still applies. I personally like working out at home while my 2 year old is runnin around. Going to the gym is not an option - plus i i enjoy not wasting time getting to and from the gym. There are so many scenarios where this will work for people. I personally would not get a tonal since i do not like membership, but it doesnt mean i cant see the value of these devices for some people. I have a full cage, functional trainer, accessories, and a concept 2 rowerg at home so i dont need nor i want something with a membership - the same goes for a gym that is at least 20 minutes away from where i live and that’s not including the time i need to look for parking which can be 1minute or 15minutes. I can build out my gym slowly over the course of the year with thousands allocated to building, I just need to make room. But most people either dont have the space or do not have the resources to keep buying equipment. These all in one solutions with visual motivation is very enticing for them. These devices are not meant for the hardcore lifting bros - not the target market.
@@hby7768 lol - I wish I was a bit more of a hardcore lifting bro... or at least more hardcore. I am more like softcore. I don't mean to imply that there is no value. But i think people don't really think about the actual cost of this versus say a roll your own type approach. I think you will get far more value for your dollar buying the pieces you need without a subscription. This solution is for people who think the solution to their fitness problems is to throw money at it. It will work to a point but you can't buy fitness, only motivation, and even then if that motivation does not come from within it will eventually become ineffectual. Those nag emails from (INSERT FITNESS SUBSCRIPTION PROVIDER OF CHOICE HERE) will quickly become ineffectual.
@@dylans2669 Some people’s time is worth more than $39.99 a month. I can only assume money is worth more to you than time. For me $200 is worth more than 1 hour of going to and from the gym. That’s means 3-5 times driving to the gym is worth more than $2400-$4000 a month. $39.99 is a drop in the bucket. Some people rather spend $39.99 than wasting 15hours a month driving to the gym. You are assuming your perspective on how the value of time or convenience is the same for everyone else. For a corporate lawyer, every hour is $500+. 3x500 = $1500 per week they have to allocate to drive to the gym and back assuming they only workout 3 times a week. Or if someone saves 3-5hrs a week from driving to and from the gym, that is 3-5hrs they can spend with their kids, significant other, or other hobbies. The more you can manage your time, the more money you can earn and ultimately, that $39.99 is nothing. You spend all this time stressing over $40 when that time you use could have net you significantly more than two 20 dollar bills.
Going with the short cut takes a lot of courage Coop, looks good. I'd like to see you bring her down to a 1 guard or 3mm until you don't feel self conscience and then go 1/2 guard or 1.5mm. For the past few years I've done 1.5mm once a week and wish I would had done it long before.
@@monkeyb1820 I think the 1/2 guard is the shortest guard so no guard would be zero. I'm afraid to go no guard because I do it myself and don't want to cut my head 😆.
@Amanda - does Tempo measure bar velocity (aka VBT)? @Coop how about Tonal? And can Tonal mimic linear & exponential (chains & bands) accommodating resistance? Any home-gym tech this expensive that can’t identify velocity of movement &/ provide accommodating resistance, well … is not too smart 🤓
I like these videos, although I’m a barbell, squat rack girl, there is an audience that like smart home gyms. As long as people are exercising that’s what matters.
These smart gyms look like expensive gimmicks. But I guess if Tonal focused on making this a replacement for functional trainers it might be worth a shot. It has such a small footprint.
Tonal is great for the motivational feedback that you receive (gamification is an effective tool to modifying behavior). Rather than working out to failure or near failure as is often recommended, I work out to reach small but consistent improvements in PRs. These small (e.g. 1-2 lbs per week for some exercises) but consistent gains have allowed my to 4x my strength in less than 2 years with low risk of injury. Tonal’s “strength score”metric (that means nothing outside of Tonal), but gives me an objective way to see that I’m improving long before that shows up in the bathroom mirror. If you are someone who has always been self motivated to workout, this aspect isn’t important. If you (like me) previously used your old home gym equipment primarily as a clothing rack, Tonal’s software might be what you need to keep consistently working out and see improvements.
Lost all interest in adding the Tonal to my home gym when I found out it lost pretty much all features without the subscription. I was working under the assumption you just lost the "classes/trainers" access. Losing the dynamic weight modes is a big loss :( I have a pretty complete home gym with free weights and dozens of specialty bars, but was looking for a functional trainer. Tonal sounded cool, but not if all of the "cool" stuff requires the subscription. Normal functional trainer it is for me.
@@mattcoorey2580 You might be right. I may have misunderstood the description on their site: "Your Tonal membership gives you access to unlimited accounts, our ever-growing library of workouts and programs, as well as our intelligence tools. See the full list of benefits below." I guess the intelligence tools include things like dynamic weight modes, but not the smart handles. Thanks for questioning it and making me look at it again; I'll update my comment. I still think the loss of the dynamic weight modes is the biggest hit. I love eccentric modes on machines the few times I've gotten to use them at various gyms.
I bet they change the subscriptions in the future, with a lower-tier option for people who don't want the programs but want all the other smart features. I think the fact that they require the subscription for the first year isn't entirely about money...you're more likely to keep using the Tonal past the first year if you develop habits early on. BY forcing the subscription fee, you're more likely to use the Tonal and more likely to explore all of the features and become accustomed to them.
What became painfully obvious to me when purchasing a Tonal is that you are entering into a relationship with the company behind the product and IMO Tonal is ill-equipped to provide any kind of meaningful customer service. How would you describe interactions with Tempo the company?
Nice Video:) How about checking out the Eleiko XF short bar? Haven‘t found good material on that bar on youtube or anywhere else. For us people lifting in narrow rooms it would be awesome to get your experienced opinion on that. Thank you for considering the idea. Kind regards from Munich , Germany.
Should mention that Tonal requires professional installation as it adheres to the wall, whereas Tempo Studio is free-standing. I'm not sure I want Tonal attached to studs in the drywall. Thanks for the great review!! I am Team Tempo!
Both systems sound great for people just starting out or don't know what excercise to do. But over time u will get the motivation to excercise by yourself which could make these expensive coat racks
Gee ,or they can buy some weights on Craigslist and a bench and squat rack and look at the thousands of workout videos on UA-cam to learn what they need to do.
Tempo is literally an overpriced cabinet + a flat screen + a web-cam + under-sized weights (for most male trainees). How anyone thinks it can compete with a product that lets you actually adjust the resistance curve of each movement (i.e. something you pretty much can't do with free weights or even most commercial gym equipment) is beyond me....
Keep the videos coming!!!! Have you tried hip belt squats on the tonal ( or other function cable trainer) with one or both arms in low position? Are there any vests out there with attachment rings on the side for squat use with cable trainers?
This video and the last video on the Rower with Sam makes me thinkI would love to see a GGR behind the scenes episode. Love Coop and this is my favorite gym channel on youtube (sorry basement brandon, I see your comment down there) but I think it would be interesting to meet the team.
I can buy a cheap dumbell set. I'll definitely take the cables hands down. I dont need a coach, so it seems like that tempo is even useful. The tonal also has that cool auto adjustment.
Not sure the tech is there for me yet. Was wanting all the new gadgets, but lately been trying to simplify. I can do pretty much everything I need for under $1,000 with a decent barbell set and a half rack.
I don’t really get the purpose of the Tempo other than it has classes and a camera to track your movement. Seems like there’s probably an iPad app for that. I’ve really been considering the Tonal though. Coop, what do you think of the Tonal vs a traditional functional trainer? They’re not that far apart in price for a quality FT and I think my girlfriend would be more inclined to use the Tonal.
@garagegymreviews Have you reassessed Tempo since the big update? Also, have you reviewed it with the pro system with squat rack? I feel like some of your concerns have been addressed. In addition, I feel free weights are way better for accessory muscles and preventing injuries than a cable type system. Thoughts?
It has an eccentric mode that makes the negative heavier. It's pretty awesome. I'm sure it would be great for slow motion training as long as spotter mode is turned off. Had Tonal for 2 months and love it so far.
What exactly is the point of the Tempo? It works as a mirror (the camera giving you feed back), you watch someone else work out and it doubles as a storage rack? How does that help?
For a person that isn’t as experienced, it could help them more by giving the camera feedback, instructor led classes, give weight increase recommendations based off your workouts and it tracks your reps. Sure these are all things an experienced weight lifter considers no big deal, but for a new lifter it does ease one into things.
At nearly 50 and desperately trying to get my ass in shape after decades of trying I think the number one key for me is for the solution to be as frictionless as possible. My life is littered with one legit solution/tool after another sitting in the corner because mentally I just couldn't overcome whatever it was that kept me from pulling the device out, setting it up, getting in position, wondering and worrying about form and settings, and all the rest. I have no idea how I will afford Tonal and I won't know if it will truly work until I find a way (maybe I will fail this, too), but it appears to be the one with the least amount of friction and the highest level of automation. So.... now to find the money somewhere....before I die young or have the "healthcare" system take it.
I have no interest in these but still appreciate the insight.
Same here. No interest.

The bad is that Tonal relies on working tech. If anything goes awry, you can’t workout on it until it’s fixed. But in NYC, there’s a Tonal store with a machine for such a case.
LOL..." Feeling unsafe doing free weights squats without a squat bar" .... LOL 😂, what does that even mean.

Is subscription mandatory? Also can tonal check you form and posture?
@@sowmithyashu916 you can use the very basic lifting functions without a subscription, but you lose all of the “smart” features. There is form feedback in terms of range of motions and rate of movement. You can also use the Tonal app to video record a side profile view to see your form and get some feedback (this feature is new and a little buggy, but I suspect it will get better).
Based on Coop's reviews, I recommended Tonal to my parents who are their 60s/70s. They liked the idea, but the upfront cost, along with the subscription, was a bit too much for them to swallow.
Haircut looking CLEAN!
If these were what were in my garage, I would never go train.
But this morning I got to do chin-ups and dips, lift a 150# sandbag, and bench press with a Rogue barbell inside of a Titan squat stand on a REP bench. So good.
Sure you did. 😏
And you obviously have lots of space and no kids or cars in your garage?
I don't know if you will ever go, but there is a gym in Lancaster, PA called Spooky Nook. It's the biggest sports complex in the United States. You should at least cover what's in the gym if you don't go and tour it
Have you had a chance to test the Tempo Move system seperately?
Yep, video in the works. The price point is pretty epic.
For bodybuilding, Tonal is more than enough with 100lbs per hand 'torsional not gravitational resistance'.👍
For powerlifting strength training, them 100lbs in certain exercises will be a limiting factor.
I love the programs and coaches too.
and bench press.... needs 300 pounds I think.
@@daniel8489 200 is plenty for me right now. I use it mostly for hypertrophy work so I haven't needed more than 150 on bench so far. And that's with around a 315 max bench
Hi 🤡, so you compare doing squats and deadlifts on this to using freeweights ? LOL 😂
Or you could just work out without the Tempo because it essentially does nothing...
Has guided workouts, huge screen so it's not like watching it on your phone or tablet. Has entire programs, community etc. As someone who doesn't know how to program it gives me exactly zero friction for working out. I don't have to research anything, I just show up and get coached. It's dope.
I love the input from another person!
The Tempo Move almost seems like the perfect addition to a home gym at only $400 but the $40/month still kills that value for me
The wife insisted we get her an exercise bike (MYX).
@@dylans2669 yeah you can go to planet fitness for 10 bucks the idea of having a home gym is no monthly fee
@@pleton80 A home gym is not just about not paying the monthly payment.

I vote tonal and COOP's new high and tight haircut is on point
it's a great improvement isn't it?
I'm on team use real weights and am not a fan of strictly resistance. I just don't get the same results from resistance training as I do from holding on to physical weights. I started with the old solo flex, then was using a bow flex, then when I switched to barbell and dumbbell I seen a massive increase in results
These pieces of garbage are for SOY BOYS and people that really don't want to workout but tell all of their friends that they do.

Would you do a review on Carbon trainer and Oxefit XS1.
So, this Tempo is great, as long as you have plenty of plates & dumbbells, which I already have. Sorry, what do I need it for? At least the other one has internal resistance, although a good functional trainer would be better. They both just seem like ways to extract cash from noobs.
Artificial motivation ;)
What! I have to adjust the arms! Can I hire someone to do that for me?
Going with the short cut takes a lot of courage Coop, looks good. I'd like to see you bring her down to a 1 guard or 3mm until you don't feel self conscience and then go 1/2 guard or 1.5mm. For the past few years I've done 1.5mm once a week and wish I would had done it long before.
what's the default metal guard (I guess it's really the 'blade') that comes on the Wahl? that's all I use.
@@monkeyb1820 I think the 1/2 guard is the shortest guard so no guard would be zero. I'm afraid to go no guard because I do it myself and don't want to cut my head 😆.
What about the Nordictrack Fusion CST?
@Amanda - does Tempo measure bar velocity (aka VBT)?
@Coop how about Tonal? And can Tonal mimic linear & exponential (chains & bands) accommodating resistance?
Any home-gym tech this expensive that can’t identify velocity of movement &/ provide accommodating resistance, well … is not too smart 🤓
I like these videos, although I’m a barbell, squat rack girl, there is an audience that like smart home gyms. As long as people are exercising that’s what matters.
LOL 😂, yea in a month this garbage becomes a place to hang your clothes. LOL 😂
More analogue immediately got my vote before going any further
Do you have to buy a membership to use tonal .
I'm on team neither. I'm not trying to spend 39 bucks a month to workout at my own house.
These smart gyms look like expensive gimmicks. But I guess if Tonal focused on making this a replacement for functional trainers it might be worth a shot. It has such a small footprint.
Coop or Amanda, does any of them allow for apps? Like could you download Peloton or Juggernaut. Maybe UA-cam to watch Garage Gym Reviews?
Thanks for the update on these. Great video.
I’m with Amanda!! Love my Tempo!!
Hi, Have I been selected as the random winner of the Tempo Studio Smart home gym?
Lost all interest in adding the Tonal to my home gym when I found out it lost pretty much all features without the subscription. I was working under the assumption you just lost the "classes/trainers" access. Losing the dynamic weight modes is a big loss :(
I have a pretty complete home gym with free weights and dozens of specialty bars, but was looking for a functional trainer. Tonal sounded cool, but not if all of the "cool" stuff requires the subscription. Normal functional trainer it is for me.
No I’m pretty sure you can still use the smart accessories
@@mattcoorey2580 You might be right. I may have misunderstood the description on their site: "Your Tonal membership gives you access to unlimited accounts, our ever-growing library of workouts and programs, as well as our intelligence tools. See the full list of benefits below."
I guess the intelligence tools include things like dynamic weight modes, but not the smart handles.
@@mattcoorey2580 no, you cannot use the smart modes without the sub.
@@daniel8489 I believe you’re referring to the dynamic weight modes.
The smart accessories will still work.
Great video. Just because I like free weights, I'll go with team Amanda. Tonal hasn't called my attention.
What became painfully obvious to me when purchasing a Tonal is that you are entering into a relationship with the company behind the product and IMO Tonal is ill-equipped to provide any kind of meaningful customer service. How would you describe interactions with Tempo the company?
Tonal of course, thanks both
Nice Video:) How about checking out the Eleiko XF short bar? Haven‘t found good material on that bar on youtube or anywhere else. For us people lifting in narrow rooms it would be awesome to get your experienced opinion on that. Thank you for considering the idea. Kind regards from Munich , Germany.
Should mention that Tonal requires professional installation as it adheres to the wall, whereas Tempo Studio is free-standing. I'm not sure I want Tonal attached to studs in the drywall. Thanks for the great review!! I am Team Tempo!
My man finally let that hair go. Looking good Coop

Can be on no side? Not a tech fan 😂 but loved the video
Team Coop, I’m sure that response I got isn’t from you just want to check…if I did win one, my wife would love it 🥰 but I would never use it. 😂
Both systems sound great for people just starting out or don't know what excercise to do. But over time u will get the motivation to excercise by yourself which could make these expensive coat racks
Many people never get that motivation, and just treat exercise as a "necessary evil", this is targeted at that Demo
Gee ,or they can buy some weights on Craigslist and a bench and squat rack and look at the thousands of workout videos on UA-cam to learn what they need to do.
Sorry Coop..I'm a fan..but I'm with Amanda on this one. Not a tech bro but its still a different feeling hoisting weights.
Tonal actually has a camera and I’ve been told the plan is to add in form tracking. But it’s non function still
Team Amanda Tempo
Tempo is literally an overpriced cabinet + a flat screen + a web-cam + under-sized weights (for most male trainees). How anyone thinks it can compete with a product that lets you actually adjust the resistance curve of each movement (i.e. something you pretty much can't do with free weights or even most commercial gym equipment) is beyond me....
Great content!!!👏🏻
Team COOP! All day 💪
Never got my tempo, what happened??
Does Coop wear a tupee'?
Not sure the tech is there for me yet. Was wanting all the new gadgets, but lately been trying to simplify. I can do pretty much everything I need for under $1,000 with a decent barbell set and a half rack.
Hi 🤡, why do you need ...." tech" .... to workout?
I don’t really get the purpose of the Tempo other than it has classes and a camera to track your movement. Seems like there’s probably an iPad app for that.
I’ve really been considering the Tonal though. Coop, what do you think of the Tonal vs a traditional functional trainer? They’re not that far apart in price for a quality FT and I think my girlfriend would be more inclined to use the Tonal.
"Amanda and I..." Grammar aside, great review video. LOL!
Great review and good points. Maybe we could get the two companies to merge and include the camera on the Tonal.
@garagegymreviews Have you reassessed Tempo since the big update? Also, have you reviewed it with the pro system with squat rack? I feel like some of your concerns have been addressed. In addition, I feel free weights are way better for accessory muscles and preventing injuries than a cable type system. Thoughts?
Hi Coop. How about giving the Vitruvian a go? Could be interesting to find out if it's worth the money, or just some nice advertising. 😬
Thanks for the video!! Is Tonal any good for slow motion training? How well does it work on the excentric phase? Cheers :))
@@MrMmitch32 But you could just do all that on your phone whilst using a real gym...
Great review, super informative and fair.
