28:50 The key for getting from 15 to 20 pushups when you can't do anymore is to pause for 15-30 seconds then do as many as you can, then rest and repeat, you can do almost 100 in 20 minutes when your max is only 15 consecutive. That's way more powerful to your mental toughness than giving up at your max or trying to push your max.

I found this podcast after listening to both Joe Rogan appearances. I have to say that I'm starting to really feel what you have to say Jocko. It's making me think a lot and It's caused me to start a new path in my life. I'm getting back into jiu jitsu thanks to your talks about discipline and JUST DO IT! I want to give you props and say keep it up man!
On a side note I was in the Air Force and hearing all your war stories are interesting. Being part of the chair force I didn't get the experience you did, but having family and friends who are/were in the Marines I've heard about how hard it can be in the front. Proud of you and every other Marine. Thanks for fighting in the frontlines for our freedom and liberty. HOORAH!!

I'm discovering these podcasts now. Great timing for me, need a kick in the pants and some good reminders. Mental toughness... this is what I learned many years ago. Feel the fear and do it anyway. Step out of your comfort zone. The more you step out of your comfort zone the bigger that comfort zone gets, the bigger your life gets. My mental toughness grows or stays front and center in my life as I continue to step out of my comfort zone. Even if one is stepping out of that comfort zone a little bit at a time, your building mental toughness a little bit at a time and keeping mental toughness front and center.

I'd add a timestamp for his statement on the approach of Jiu-Jitsu in contrast to Boxing, but he misrepresented Boxing quite a bit.
The Art of Combat (At the pinnacle of its efficacy) as a whole would have been a good example for what he was explaining.
He didn't need to oversimplify Boxing down to such an extreme in order to exalt his chosen method because every single form of Combat can be sloppily simplified as, "One person trying to hit the other."
It doesn't invalidate his point, but it gives it a bit of a bad taste because I don't know of any Elite-Boxers who didn't optimize their Fighter's IQ in order to mentally condition their opponents.

I like how Echo acknowledges that he didn't really have a need for discipline until a few years before this video. Like him, I was pretty naturally gifted at most things I did, and while I worked hard to improve at them, I never had to truly apply high levels of self discipline. It was either not necessary or applied for me by coaches, teachers, parents, etc.

'strength' and 'toughness' mean a great deal more than pushing yourself physically and sticking out your course work. there's a massive difference between going through the challenges in pursuit of your dreams, versus sucking up the hopelessness, and pain, and injustice of everyday adult existence just to stay afloat.
a big macho guy who's spent the best part of his life doing something as fulfilling as being a damn SEAL probably isn't going to appreciate that, so i myself just want to give credit to all of those people in the grind that nobody seems to give a shit about.

Coming to "BACK IN THE DAY" of episode #1 and listening again.... Man!.... I can't believe it's going on 2.6 years now, or I should say, I can't believer it's already been 2.6 years.
