Working on this Model A in Detroit with Derek was seriously the best week of my life. Thank you Derek and MotorTrend for the opportunity to make this episode of Roadworthy Rescues! Let's do it again!!!
Derek you DEFINITELY could not have found anyone better than Paul Shinn to work on a Model A. I’m of the mind that he knows more about them than did Henry Ford‼️ You guys need to do a follow-up❗️❗️
There is so much I feel is missing. MT has this idea that we all dont have enough of an attention span, that we can barley hang on for 15 minutes. If you know Derek's fan base, you'd know we watch all 2 hours of his episodes and love every minute of it. I want the history on this car. I want to see the first start and Derek's reaction. I just want more. What a waste....
Absolutely! I hope that the feller doesn't leave behind the formula that brought him success and keeps us watching and enternained. A guy needs to not forget what makes him who he is.
I agree 100%. This is just as bad as watching a movie that ends with a cliffhanger, and never making a sequel. Why even waste the effort. I'll just watch Vice Grip Garage.... Lol
Yeah, almost like watching one of those home-rescue shows. The brothers smash one counter top then the 8-man crew of Mexican artisans comes in, next thing you see is a finished rebuild. @@leftyo9589
Paul seems like a super nice guy donating his time to this pretty junky car and getting it to run. I've caught several of Paul's videos on these old cars and I love the simplicity and thoughtfulness of their design when working on cars was part of their initial design. I love Paul's shirt that says "I am the warranty".
Yep. Easy to work on because they had to be. No dealer network in the beginning and repair shops were still not too common. Easy to work on, but quite a handful to drive (at least at first). My dad, who worked on many cars in his life, told me years ago that the Model T and A were the easiest cars he ever worked on.
Jumping a starter solenoid with a screwdriver was the first thing I ever learned about cars, thanks to a buddy's car having ignition issues. It has served me well for decades. Thanks Derek!
Excellent job of breaking the engine down and replacing defective parts and then the pleasure of driving this old girl. Paul Shinn has so much knowledge about these Model A's and Model T's he's a valuable man to have by your side.
Very cool episode...Derek and Paul reviving a 1928 Ford Model A and then cruising around Detroit, MI in it...automotive only content doesn't get any better than that!
That was excellent! When I was just a kid, all my buddies had model A's so I learned a lot from them. I never had a Ford but the basics are still there. Gas, spark, compression. Bang!
Awesome. I’ve got an 09 Buick …1909 which is crazy to drive. Throttle and advance in the wheel. Brake on the right first gear reverse are clutches and second gear is a lever.
So cool to see you in my hometown working on an old “Feerd.” Thanks for the years of great entertainment, and loads of knowledge I’ve gained watching you wrastle with all these old rigs.
Great to see. this. in 1967 in New Zealand Fjiordland, a Maori work mate took us eel fishing in his 1929 model A. I was amazed when it climed a very steep river bank while seemingly just ticking over. I have never forgotten it.
From a content point of view, I'm not so sure that was a step up. VGG was, and still is, a very entertaining channel (although it is more racing than it used to be and is losing its rescue/recovery style more these days, it seems). MT, as others here have noticed, rather slipshod in its presentation of a subject.
Love Paul's tee shirt - I am the warranty. This was a pleasant video. A bit short and skipped the actual start and body upgrade / conversion. But still worthwhile. Please keep them coming
To let everyone know, Packard is back in business. They are located in Medina,Ohio They will be bringing back the 1934 Packard Convertible It will be hand built with new equipment and technology. They have 1 built so far, and it is inside on their showroom floor. They have all the details and will be taking new orders soon .
😂🤣🤣💀😭💀😭💀❗❗❗ That Fella's Face, as He strolled into "ONLY GOD KNOWS what His thoughts were @ that SPECIFIC MOMENT in time & the Name He possibly had given it", was UNMATCHABLE & ONE OF A KIND 😆😆😆 Superior Content, Derek. I always enjoy watching Derek tinkering with older cars and teaching the youngins the specific names to the parts of an engine. This one was to short though.
A fun interesting video. Amazing what a "feller" can do with a bunch of replacement parts, A well equipped shop, a lift, an expert helper, and a LOT of video editing! Truthfully, I like the Vice Grip Garage videos a lot better.
I think Paul talked about this episode on his channel. They ended up buying a different engine for the model a, which in my mind defeats the entire purpose
back in the early 60's my brother and i had a model A woody wagon that was rough and we tinkered with it, learned on our own about cars and got it running and driving.
Great video. I own a 30 Tudor. Love all the vids about Model A's. Thank you for sharing your adventures. Paul's videos have saved my bacon more that I can remember.
You guys definitely robbed me of the first start. After all of that teardown - why!! I appreciate you working with Derek, I wish this was on Derek's channel though.
Excellent video Derek :) yes those Model A cars are interesting in 1994 at first Restoration shop I work we did body also electrical to 1929 Model A Woody car also so fun work on and Motor was updated to a Flat Head 292 1 barrel carb with hand choke cable to steering wheel plus Floor shifter h patterns R with 1 & 2 6 volt positive ground electrical start or hand crank handle same brakes as 1928 has plus wheels! I have seen car in years since Restoration and but be nice someday! You enjoy 1928 nice work get motor and test drive Derek!
Too bad we missed the good parts. Anyway i just love the simplicity and build quality. It's like you could basically rebuild the engine with ease knowing the parts are solid an will last a lifetime
I know of one of these in Santa Fe springs Calif. At mansion on corner of pioneer and Florence, family had all the oilfields, in shed, licking my chops....own many many factories in area maybe a billion
I enjoyed the video don’t see Derek working on these dinosaurs very much, First time seeing Paul and he knows these old cars inside and out so it makes a fun educational video 👍👍
You just KNOW this will go better than the "When Engineers Go Bad" Cadillac with the Dr. CrankCaseStein 8-6-4 from last week. I'm STILL hungover from that!
Always wanted to do this sort of car from the ground up on a Model A. Ever since the TV show 'Walton's Mountain' had that nice yellow one the older brothers drove around in that seemed like a good idea. It was pretty much like this one with a rumble seat. Not a total disaster though. I like this one. Those white rims look amazing. Driving it around after came out of the OEM factory floor. Interesting. Is that where that Paul Shinn has his shop? Probably not. You guys probably just visited the Motor City Car Club where it was. The front wheels look like they need a serious alignment. Shazam - it has a new top and rumble seat. Truly UA-cam magic.
I really enjoy this show on motor trend TV, and Derek is a great mechanic. I could say his jokes are really not necessary, but that's my opinion, no one else. I'm more into serious talking about old car rescue.
Thay say the last 20% 0f the build takes 80% of the time I really like this car /hauler build had some questions but again Bad Chad comes through of course the help of Jolene like always kudos to you guys to many haters out there I can't get over how perfect that roof looks
Nice work man 👍 Did you know that the same old six cylinder bosh starter motor is the same all ya have to do is change the parts that bolt up to the gearbox. And just loving the colour of the XC FALCON And was wounding what the exact colour it is as I’m looking to paint my XW green. Thanks 👍
Make sure to check the settings on the computer, the airbags and the ABS brakes. I don't believe they have traction control unless you get the navigation package
What happened? Great video, loving the rebuild, got the compression, and then...suddenly a completely restored car? I was seriously looking forward to watching the whole restoration, every little detail .... sigh.

Outstanding Paul, you rock!
Thanks for helping Merlin get back to Ohio!
Telling someone not to buy something and then helping to get it fixed up is a theme I'm way too familiar with.. 😂 Nice work sir! 👏

We went from a compression test to driving on the road. WHAT!?
I love how the VGG videos get longer every time :D i can listen to his doodaps all day long - I laugh so much and longer videos means more laughing :D
I agree 100%. This is just as bad as watching a movie that ends with a cliffhanger, and never making a sequel. Why even waste the effort. I'll just watch Vice Grip Garage.... Lol
Sold Out, Im Sad.
Love how it jumps from "we got compression" to "now we're driving on the street". First starts are not a thing MotorTrend cares about. 🤦♂
With a new top...and seats.
I watch these shows to see how everything is fixed. This channel seems to edit out that sort of thing.
@@daveswinfield That's why I go right to Vice Grip Garage for that sort of thing. I only clicked on this video was because of VGG.
That's why his channel is better
these cut down vids truly lose everything.

Derek and Paul are great together! Old cars, even better! I want MUCH more content like this!!!!
If Motor Trend ever invites me back, I'm in!!
@@ModelAyou are the warranty Paul.
I laughed so hard when Derek was shaking the car to clean the gas tank and the mechanic comes in the shop. The look on his face was priceless!!😅😂
plastic bladed paint mixer cut down to fit into the tank on a drill will work alot better than car shaking alone. great vid! thanks

Except that Paul will drink all your Gatorade and only leave you with the Diet Cokes.

I had a '30 coupe when I was in high school (early 1960s). I spent nearly every spare cent I had on that thing, but I still love it.
Two of my favorite you-tubers getting that Ford steel back on the road.
Great little video.
I can't imagine going from a horse & buggy to something like this, they must've thought they were on a rocket.
I liked the head removal trick. I liked the VGG version of this save a little more but adding the two of them together made it great.
