We took the coolest Buick ever to cars and coffee!

  • Here it is, folks! The crème de la crème of 80s muscle: the elusive Buick GNX! It was popular back then, and even people our age know about the myth of this beast. The hype of a limited production GM muscle car is ever-present, but for this one it's actually something with substance behind it. It doesn't drive well for an 80s car, it drives excellent for a modern car. Somehow they were able to turn the Grand National into something truly special. We're just so unbelievably lucky we got to drive it!
Cars and coffee was popping today! This was the same day we filmed with the Ineos Grenadier, and it was a full house at Hayfields. People loved to see a dream car from their childhood casually stroll up out of the early morning mist too.

Absolutely the quintessential '80's power car.....true American bad-assery. I was watching Mecum Auctions when an "87 GNX rolled across and secured a staggering $250,000.....mind blowing!!

I'm old enough (fortunately or unfortunately) to remember these cars brand new. I bought my first brand new car, an '87 Grand National, in December of 1987. Out on the streets that winter, I came across one of these GNX's. They were fast, noticeably faster than my stock GN. But once I made the usual upgrade (changing the ROM chip allowing the turbo to make about 5 more pounds of boost - the main difference between a GNX and a regular GN), the cars were much more equal in performance - straight line anyway. Lots of fun back then. Miss those days.

@@jdgreen214 One of my best friends bought the GMC Syclone brand new in 1991 that truck launched awesome. when we took it to the track everyone thought he modified an s10. His was number 200 and something off the production line. You are fortunate to have the 2 GM classics in your garage. I've been a Turbo Buick owner since 1993 and a fan since they came out. Love driving it and hearing that turbo spool every time .

@@ZeeCayPeeA Thanks. Yeah I love driving them both. The only issue I have found with the typhoon/syclone is the should have used the coils and cam ignition system like the grandnational. The old analog type distributor with a ignition control module under the cap fails all the time. I have owned my typhoon sine 2019 and have went through 10 of those things. My local shop is doing a holley dual sync distributor that will eliminate that issue and a maxxecu to control it all.

What an awesome car, guys. And a GNX. I go to a Killer Rides show out here and every so often 4 GNs roll in together and I think one is a GNX. I have to go through my pix. Keep up the great work!

I own a t top 87 grandnational and I could most definitely make it my daily driver. Mine has been modified and makes a safe 500hp and 600tq. I surprise a lot of mustangs and scatpacks. The torque on these vehicles hit low and pulls to redline. The only reason i wouldn't daily it is because they have tendency to be stolen.

I came back. That was McLaren as in the 720S McLaren. Same company different decade. They also modded a Grand Prix. Fun fact I had an ASC sunroof installed in my 1984 Isuzu Impulse. It was also black. No Darth sounds just a gutless 1.9L i4. Slowwwww. Turbo came later.
