Purposefully, not having read the comments. Ill say this… i had been a fan of Ryan for YEARS before this song/album came out. Many of his songs break me, in happy and sad ways. This song, however, brings me to my knees! WOW AMAZING
First you quit school at 16, and leave home.Try making music and supporting yourself. Move to NYC: get addicted to drugs and booze, get clean, fall into that again; get clean again, then get sick to the point that you may loose your gift to make or even listen to music. In the meantime, you get married, give that a go, and have it not work out. Ryan has something called Menier's disease, it affects the inner ear, and balance, and the illness is very difficult to treat. He lives with it now, and is doing much better, but he cannot have lights in his eyes or lots of flash photography. Live a full, and sometimes very unstable life-there's a lot of gold in all that struggle and pain.
I love that Letterman has Adam on so often and allows him to sing more than one song a night, very rare these days! It's great for people to hear more than just the songs that get radio exposure. Adam has a crazy amount of talent and his music is just simply beautiful.
This man has such an intense level of perfection in his lyrics and music, he is such an inspiration on just saying what you feel no matter how painful - thank god there is someone with so much honesty in life and music!
Poor little rose, beaten by the rain In the wind in the gale, thunder and the hail Sometimes I feel like I'm going insane Without the numbness or the pain so intense to feel Especially now it added up through the years And I I taught myself how to grow Without any love and there was poison in the rain I taught myself how to grow Now I'm crooked on the outside, and the inside's broke Most of the time I got nothing to say When I do it's nothing and nobody's there to listen anyway I know I'm probably better off this way I just listen to the voices on the TV till I'm tired My eyes grow heavy and I fade away 'Cause I I taught myself how to grow Without any love and there was poison in the rain I taught myself how to grow Till I was crooked on the outside I taught myself how to grow Without any love and there was poison in the rain I taught myself how to grow Till I was crooked on the outside, inside's caved Crooked on the outside, inside's caved Crooked on the outside, inside's caved I taught myself how to grow old
Ryan Adams is probably the best songwriters of our time. He should be as big as Nirvana. But people dont realize how intoxicating his music is. Whenever I recommend him to friends they all reply"That guy is too country for me" Even though I try to explain to them that Ryan Adams is true and pure music. Stupid MTV and Mainstream Media, they are teaching teenagers to listen to the wrong kind of music. I think every teenager should be able to enjoy Ryan Adams.
I have actually not yet heard him do a live version of this song with the harmonica. I do love the pedal steel. This song is one that when heard live, you can never really go back to the studio track. It's really a great song.
JEEEEEZ...how much great material has this dude penned?..i'm surprised anybody else thinks they can write songs and get a look-in......STUNNING songs..every damned one of them.
Love the mans music. Heartfelt lyrics. I agree also about jackson Browne acoustic albums are sublime. some of Ryan's songs played on a great audio system put a lump in my throat when I listen beautiful music.
Fucking genius song. I'm 13, and I wish I learned about Ryan Adams earlier, when he was on tour. I want to see him live so badly! Someone message me when he's in Philly please lol.
Hey Sweet Face, I bought myself 'reading glasses' today for the first time so I came home and played this song. Every day I teach myself how to grow old. See you in the 'Love Sub'
Sounds like something that could have been on 'Plastic Ono Band' Album. And that is indeed a compliment. This sounds like Ryan having a Primal therapy session. Its very stark but eloquent and heartbreakingly gorgeous...I love this version even more than the album version too!!
“I know I’m probably better of this way… I just listen to the voices on the TV till I’m tired, my eyes grow heavy and I fade away, cause I… I taught my self how to grow….” I mean seriously!!!
I just can't stop listening to this song.. it is soooooo good. it just keeps getting better with every listen, and that could be said of the album.. this guy is an absolute genius, and I don't use that word lightly..thanks for posting!!
I really hope he gets back to stuff like this. I mean, I get that he needs to explore possibilities creatively, but I think Easy Tiger and Heartbreaker are by far his best work. The more stripped down his stuff is, the better.
Demolition is my favorite record by this great guy-those songs can be stripped down and are amazing to see performed live. He rarely does "Dear Chicago" anymore because the riff is hard to play, but so incredibly great. His collection of work over the years really does make Ryan one of the most amazing and prolific songwriters of his generation.
Agree, it's a great album and i got all the albums but this is a bit different, more country then before but the lyrics are beutiful. he's getting older....as the song says.
Probably to save "Air Time"... I've been on the radio/t.v. a few times, and there always seems to be someone that says, "Is there a way you can make this song a little shorter"? Yes Captain!!
I just started listening to Ryan Adams but been listening to wilco for a while (NEW ALBUM COMING SOON!) . I understand what you are saying as far as songwriting goes. I have a lot to say about this but before I say anything I'm going to get my facts straight and give Ryan Adams a good listen. to be continued...
Love him or hate him, he's an EXTREMELY prolific songwriter, with songs that would fall under many genres. The vast majority of his songs do not sound anything alike.
I know this maybe won't mean much if anything at all, but--I've been a RA fan for a LONG time....I'm so grateful that he is at this point! I LOVE RYAN ADAMS...always will... Peace...
Well, you should listen all the way through all of his albums. Heartbreaker is a 60s Bob Dylan thing, Gold is supposed to resemble a 70s album, Demolition has a ton of ear pleasing rock pop songs, llor 'n kcor is a rock tribute, Love Is Hell, is mopey rock album. I can go on and on. Some songs sound similar, but Adams makes up for it and more with his lyrics.
I could listen to that steel guitar ALL DAY.
Michael Tapp I love you Michael Tapp
This song is timeless
I relate to this song on so many levels. It's as if he wrote it for me. I love this man. My favorite artist now and forever.
So many great songs. Best of our generation by far
Listened to this song a million times when my dad was dying.
Genius songwriter.
This song just stops me in my tracks everytime I hear it. Its absolutely beautiful. What a genius..
His greatest Letterman moment IMO.
This song speaks to me. I cannot get over him. I'm obsessed with his voice and lyrics.
Damn we need you back.
He is one of the only real song writers left today.
He's amazing......This song is amazing.....
His Letterman sets are always so beautiful.
This song and this performance just break my heart. In a good way. But damn.
I know! Same here. Wrecks me when I hear it.
Ryan Adams at his best!
Ryan, Ryan, Ryan, and again, Ryan. Thank you for this beautiful song.
thank God for the genius that is the wonderful Mr adams
He writes from my soul
Purposefully, not having read the comments. Ill say this… i had been a fan of Ryan for YEARS before this song/album came out. Many of his songs break me, in happy and sad ways. This song, however, brings me to my knees! WOW AMAZING
the amazing thing about ryan adams is that his live performances are even better than his amazing records
I prefer this amazing performance to the album version!
How does someone that young write such a song as this? It will make you cry if you let it.. oh hell... even if you try not to. Love you Ryan.

you can see the pain inside while he is performing
ryan is such an amazing singer-songwriter. his songs break your heart... who else can do that to you?.. only the greats! viva ryan adams~
Poor little rose, beaten by the rain
In the wind in the gale, thunder and the hail
Sometimes I feel like I'm going insane
Without the numbness or the pain so intense to feel
Especially now it added up through the years
And I
I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
Now I'm crooked on the outside, and the inside's broke
Most of the time I got nothing to say
When I do it's nothing and nobody's there to listen anyway
I know I'm probably better off this way
I just listen to the voices on the TV till I'm tired
My eyes grow heavy and I fade away
'Cause I
I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
Till I was crooked on the outside
I taught myself how to grow
Without any love and there was poison in the rain
I taught myself how to grow
Till I was crooked on the outside, inside's caved
Crooked on the outside, inside's caved
Crooked on the outside, inside's caved
I taught myself how to grow old
this song made me cry when i first heard it earlier today..man
Beautiful. Just beautiful. I miss the harmonica from the album version, though.
Why do i hear soooo many artists in one song??? The Smiths, Dylan, Young, Springsteen all in a matter of minutes! Well done, Mr. Adams.
i love this song. it just want to makes you open up your heart and just pour out everything that was building up inside.
Friggin A song!!! I write songs until I'm blue in the face and I've yet to convey emotions like this cat!! How does he do it? Cheers, Mr. Adams!!
I agree with all of you here, that voice just touches my heart in a way no other voice can. Hey I've got Ryan Adams right inside me! (if only...)
Ryan Adams is probably the best songwriters of our time. He should be as big as Nirvana. But people dont realize how intoxicating his music is. such vulnerability in this song, so much pain it's hard to look at, but NOT hard to listen to. amazing artist. keep up the courage ryan.
i love that dave has RA on everytime he has a new album and usually lets him 2 songs!
could this guy be any more of a genious? I mean seriously, the dude is amazing
So, so beautiful: the voice, the version, the lyrics. Swoon.
Ryan Adams is the best musician I've ever known.. I'm so happy to find him :)
Awesome version of a great song...Thank you
That steel guitar is wicked
Truly remarkable
I have actually not yet heard him do a live version of this song with the harmonica. I do love the pedal steel.
This song is one that when heard live, you can never really go back to the studio track. It's really a great song.
like this version better than the album, its awesome
Next to Neil Young, nobody else can write songs from the heart like Ryan Adams ....
Beyond epic. Damn, he's really good.
It's great to hear a different version of it, but I find the album track to be hauntingly beautiful. What a great album closer.
Oh, my God. Still the cutest man alive. David Ryan rocks. I could listen to him sing all night long. One of the greatest voices ever....ever... -BA
Unreal
Possibly the best songwriter of the last 30+ years.
wow! I'm in love... ;)
Thanks so much for putting this up. It is incredible.
This song, this recording, this band. I can't even put it into words.
i can not think of any other artist that can get that feeling of hopelesnes across as ryan adams does that in its self is outstanding
Fucking genius song. I'm 13, and I wish I learned about Ryan Adams earlier, when he was on tour. I want to see him live so badly! Someone message me when he's in Philly please lol.

Just sincere and brilliant
this is an awesome song, i just wish he played his harmonica...
Hey Sweet Face, I bought myself 'reading glasses' today for the first time so I came home and played this song. Every day I teach myself how to grow old. See you in the 'Love Sub'

'Plastic Ono Band' Album. And that is indeed a compliment. This sounds like Ryan having a Primal therapy session. Its very stark but eloquent and heartbreakingly gorgeous...I love this version even more than the album version too!!
one of his best lyrics, has so much meaning to me
“I know I’m probably better of this way…
I just listen to the voices on the TV till I’m tired, my eyes grow heavy and I fade away, cause I… I taught my self how to grow….”

RA is one of the most revealing song writers
I couldn't agree with you more...!!! :)
Amazing vocal.

love this version, the studio version is great too, but I prefer it without the harmonica
Travis Larson I💖 You
Excellente grazie!!!!
Have to agree with you. I thought it would grow on me after several listens but not quite yet. Captain ballad!
Love him or hate him, he's an EXTREMELY prolific songwriter, with songs that would fall under many genres. The vast majority of his songs do not sound anything alike.

sheer bliss
feeling sad Ryan was ever able to write such a beautiful song.
So beautiful :')
