I had the same model get stolen. Was bitching at work and a co-worker said "I got one you can have if you can get it working." My freecompressor is working fine now. Thanks Mike.
Thanks Michael. This video was immensely helpful. I used what I already had laying around my workshop, so the repair was free. Instead of the epoxy, I got lucky and found a grommet that was a snug fit in the hole. I tightened everything down, and it works like a charm. It took me longer to source everything from odds and ends in my workshop than it did to make the actual repair. Thanks again.
Thanks, great fix. I found that an 11/16 OD flat rubber sink washer to be a perfect fit into the circular depression where the plastic piece broke out, eliminated the need for the epoxy,
I was going to reply the same thing to help others, but you had already. I did it also with a rubber washer..... I should have read the comments before I tried fixing it. It would have saved some time trying to stop the leak.
Thanks Michel, i almost throw my porter to the garbage, here we go to do your innovation to restore my porter compressor, the little tine hole i do not know the function on it but yours look fine plugging the center hole..
I borrowed my brothers compressor just to see if it would be big enough for what I needed. The 2nd time I plugged it in this broke 😭 So glad I found your video. Thank you sir
Hi Michael, Thank you for your video. It saved me both time and money. I've had my C2002 (3) piece combo kit for about two years but I had never taken it out of the box. I Finally got a chance to use it last week. I took it out of the box, read the instructions, set it up, turned it on, filled it with air, hooked up the hose to one of the nailers, turned the regulator knob, and nothing. No air pressure to the tool. ZERO. That's when I headed to UA-cam and after watching a few other "fix it" videos I ran across yours and it was the perfect solution. Better than trying to glue the part back together and definitely better than spending $25 on the repair kit just to get that plastic replacement part. I followed your instructions (already had the nuts, washers, and screw) and I was up & running in less than 15 minutes. Thanks again!
Awesome. Glad that worked out for you. Figured others had to have the same issue I had and always good to share when you find something that may help others. Used my compressor this past weekend and worked perfectly yet again with this fix. Thanks for taking the time to write.
Finally got to use mine also. Unlike most other C2002 owners, my compressor came out of the box already broken so I was very upset. Glad I was able to fix it for FREE. On a slightly different subject -- since we both own the same compressor, I wonder if you would answer a question about the air hose. My unit came with the standard 25" foot 1/4" hose. Do you know if I can use a standard 3/8" air hose with this compressor if I use the same 1/4" size fittings that came with the compressor?
Thanks for taking the time to share this clever idea for getting this "plastic fantastic" regulator back on the road again for next to nothing. I wish You the greatest good.
Thank you Michael. Super fix, it saved my hurting brain and it leaves the compressor better than new with metal parts in place rather than the plastic that gave way. MacGyver would be proud of you.
I can't believe it...but this actually worked! I didn't even have to use glue to get a seal. I just took the o-ring off the nub that broke off and put it on the bolt to make a seal. Thanks for saving me time, money, and allowing me to finish my job tonight instead of next week.
Thank you Michael, Great fix since I couldn't find any OEM parts for my Porter Cable Pancake Compressor C2002 "Type 4" compressor. After trying to purchase an OEM Type 4 repair kit for any amount of money, I gave your idea a try. First try failed after using a nut and bolt that was too large to fit inside the handle spring, second try using a smaller bolt and nut fitting inside the spring allowed me to get the cap on without issue. Finding a slight leak I used a glue gun to seal in the same locations as the video. I like like the idea seen below of using a 11/16" O.D. flat rubber sink washer but didn't read that review until I was completed. Re-assembled and installed, now the compressor works great and has no leaks.
I got the exact same compressor and you can't buy just the repair kit, or at least I could not find one. The only fix I could find was a whole new regulator at a cost of $45 and up. Getting up early in the morning to fix mine.
Thank you! I too tried super glue and failed. searched and searched for the correct rebuild kit and couldent find it. Then found your video! SUCCESS! Thanks again!
My C2002 Type 3 was never used, sat in the basement and first time I tried it...nothing. NO inexpensive parts to fix. Right out of the box didn't work but you saved the day.
I was shopping for expensive parts to fix this same problem until I found your AWESOME idea! You are a damn genius! I had everything I needed on my bench. I didn't have epoxy on hand so I used silicone and it worked perfectly. Thanks for sharing the quick and free fix!!
This ingenious little fix worked on mine. I have had mine for about 5 years so I guess I am lucky it hasn't broken before now. I did not use a sealer but may take it back apart and use some or an O-ring because I do have a small leak. Porter-Cable should have addressed this issue a long time ago. The aftermarket business is probably a good money maker for them. Thanks for the great video Michael.
THANK YOU!!! Getting up early in the morning to fix my compressor. You have gave me hope that there is a cheap and effective way to solve my problem. Sure beats $45 and up for a complete new regulator.
Thanks for a great video. My problem was the air was leaking out the front of the regulator past the knob that you screw in and out to adjust output pressure. I took it apart and found that the little valve in the back that the plastic disc pushes on was stuck. I pushed on it a couple of times with a screw driver and it popped free. Added a little light oil and put together and works great.
Thanks Mike. Fixed mine with your tips. I did something else to stop the leak. I used a thin rubber washer on each side and added silicone grease as well. No leakage at all. 150 psi achieved. All is well. Total cost = $0.00. Just used the supplies in my home shop.
Glad it worked out for you even if you did it a little different. All good. I think others have uses washers as well with good results. I probably would have gone that route if I had thought about it a little more. Just glad you are up and running with no cost for replacement parts!
Mike, that was a great fix and video you developed. Once again, we are bitten by crappy plastic junk, probably made in China from recycled plastic scrap that we sell to them. Soooo may times when I have a broken part on my cars, RV, etc. 90% of the time it is made of plastic. I am very willing to pay extra for metal parts. I hate plastic!
I have the identical compressor and ran into the same problem. The knob on mine had stripped and the plastic plunger had cracked. I followed your fix and substituted an RTV coated bolt for the broken plunger, which resolved the leak issue. The type 3 knob on mine is obsolete - offerings on ebay are cylindrical and not cone shaped. I shortened the regulator spring, which allowed use of the unstripped threads further back in the knob. Then I coated the inside of the knob with super glue gel. I reinstalled the knob and let dry. Afterwards I backed the knob out with channel locks, which effectively cut new threads.
I have Porter Cable too and it ain't broke yet but I'm taking notes just in case. Thanks Mike. Also like your "11/16 OD flat rubber sink washer" idea too Timothy B.
Thanks for the video. Saved my old c2002 type 3 compressor with parts I had in the shop. I took my other compressor apart to check it and oiled all the parts
OMG fantastic! worked for me - I also used the rubber gasket from the broken "knob" on the head of machine screw and used a cut off rubber bumper along the screw shaft to compress inside the hole. NO LEAKS. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this. I was just about to say screw it and buy a new compressor but I think this fix will hold better than replacement parts. I was a little more liberal with the epoxy and put it in between every washer and nut. No leaking what so ever. Thanks again man.
Great job nice to.see people still doing things for themselves. On used market u wouldn't belive how many people sell their compressor says it's broken and $20 dollars later you've got a few prqctly new compressor
This was a great video. The instructions were simple. My compressor had the exact same problem and your repair worked perfectly! Now I'm off to find a video on how to repair an airleak somewhere under the plastic shroud on the same compressor :/
Thanks, it works. I used a piece of a wire coat hanger with a 1/2 inch 90 degree bend to pull the plastic piece out. I then used a rubber faucet washer, one side is cone shaped on the bolt. Didn't need to use the epoxy.
Thanks for the video it saved me time and money! I made one change which I recommend as it work great and not only centered the bolt but it sealed the the fix also! I used a small electric box grommet that fit the hole perfectly it automatically centered the bolt and sealed the repair at the same time! No leak great pressure ! Thanks Again for the info!
I tried this repair tip and my gosh it worked, my psi at 150 now shuts off unit and regulator now works with no air leaks! Thanks for the tip I was ready to toss compressor and replace it, now with a bolt, two washers and two nuts I already had in my garage it works like a champ!
Michael I did it tonight and epoxied it. It seems to be holding pressure on the right hand side with no leak so far. But now the gauge on the left hand side won't work and reads zero when the gage on the right works good... My luck...lol
Thank you! I can't give you enough "thumbs up" for this solution. Combined with the sink washer recommendation from Timothy Burke, I repaired my compressor in about 20 minutes which included time finding the repair parts in my "home shop".
Thanks for the vid brother. I have never adjusted this knob and yet it broke. SMH. I'm going to try this fix with maybe some silicone under the washers.
I took this regulator gasket out with a needle nose pliers and it was stiil intact. What I did was clean the inside cavity and exterior of the washer because they had accumulated dirt. Once I did this the leak stopped
Thank You !!!!!!!!! It worked absolutely perfect. 96 cents total cost. $67.00 from Porter Cable. Thank You Again. I have lots of friends in the construction industry, I hope you don't mind if I pass along your page on my facebook. Best Regards, Anthony Bender
If you search Repair Net or factory repair you can buy the repair parts to rebuild these, the parts are 1.80 shipping is 7 bucks in lower 48 states 3-5 business days delivery. Just search Dewalt service BLack/decker Porter cable dewalt all fall under the same Black and decker brands along with a few others. You should be able to order almost any part to fix your oilless pancake compressor.
Thank you so mush for posting this! Picked up one of these from a friend who scraps. Part in the regulator was broke as with yours. Used your fix and it is working again. Have not "sealed" it up yet, just wanted to see if it would work and it does. I do have a BIG question for any one with this unit. I noticed that the hose on the left that comes out of the head unit and goes into the tank gets real hot. Like almost to hot to touch. Is that normal on this unit? Or is there something else wrong? Any one know? Any ideas? Thank you all for your time.
Mine must be an older model, it didn't break. However it did hang up, only letting partial pressure by turning the knob. What I did was apply a dab of white lithium berring grease and its back in action. Be sure to bleed down the tank or stuff will fly out under pressure at a very high rate of speed. And do not look up the valve taking it apart not without safety glasses and a face shield. Or you'll suffer serious injury or put at eye out.
Michael you are the best. I did a test run, and now I am waiting for epoxy to dry. On my c2002 compressor cuts out at about 160psi. I measured the time and in exactly 45minutes tank pressure down to 90psi. I checked all the threaded nipples for a leak and could not find one. Is this normal for this compressor, and if not what do you suggest I check next? Your tutorial skills are superb, and the photography clear and concise. Thank you for a most informative production!!! Bruce the swimmer New Rochelle N.Y.
Check to see if the small valve that the plastic piece pushes against is stuck. My was and drained down to 40 PSI and then stopped. Freed up the valve and works like new.
I just ordered one of these compressors. It's reconditioned though. I wonder if I'll have trouble too. If I just leave the regulator alone, and just leave it set to 150 PSI will it be ok?
Wish I had seen this BEFORE wasting 20$ on another plastic piece! Well, I am going to wait until this one breaks before screwing it and gluing it, but in time I suspect mine will look like yours as well.
Is there a repair kit for the c2002 type 3? I can’t find one that says it’s for my model. I can’t try this repair fix either because that center disk is destroyed from me trying to pull it out.
Looks like there are repair kits out there now on Amazon for fairly cheap. These didn't exist when I fixed mine - guess there is more demand for this now and the price is reasonable for the new parts. Verify that these work for your specific model. www.amazon.com/5140198-73-Replacement-Compressor-Regulator-D2002M-WK/dp/B09M5XBPKG/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=porter+cable+c2002+regulator+repair+kit&qid=1672440869&sr=8-1 www.repairtoolparts.com/dewalt-parts/dewalt-d55371-type-1-parts/dewalt-d24721-kit-isolator-w-screw
Michael, sure was glad to find your video! My son's Porter Cable has exactly this problem... so it's mine to repair. : >) I don't claim to know how the regulator works, but the plastic piece that breaks off has a pilot hole through its center. Looks like it's intended to provide some air into the front chamber, maybe when the adjustment knob is backed out. Obviously the screw doesn't do that, so wondered - If the plastic piece is sealed tight, did it still regulate normally? Thanks for any insight!
Hey Paul. Mine didn't seem to have any pilot hole through the center. From the looks that mine had, no air should be going out to the front chamber. If it did, the air pressure wouldn't hold in my opinion. You can test it out pretty simply without using any epoxy. You can also use a rubber washer under the nut instead as others have done with success without using epoxy. I would give it a try and see if it fixes the situation. I did that as I didn't have anything to lose trying it out. Hope the fix works for you. Michael
Been awhile since I've been on, sorry I missed this. don't know how yours broke off, but i used a small needle nosed pliers to get it out. If it's stuck in and nothing to grab onto, you can find a screw or something to poke into the center and try to put pressure on the sides as you try to pull it out. Good luck!
@@mbakker1969 I got the small round plastic piece out now trying to get the cover over regulator to come off. My compressor does not seem to have a small screw down in there holding it on. But can't get the cover to pop off. Tried a screw driver, allen wrench & prying from under the cover. I spent all of 54 cents to fix the regulator but there seems to be some air leakage from somewhere under the cover. Will try again later this week.
I don't know the exact length of the screw/bolt. It was an inch or under for sure. I just pulled a screw and some bolts from all my junk and put this together. I would say an inch is about right. 2" would be to much.
I am going to try this tomorrow. I started the compressor today. The gauge to the left showed pressure just fine. I tried adjusting the regulater today but no luck. The gauge on the right was at zero. I'm hoping this is the problem so I don't have to dish out $ 100.00 bucks for a new one.
Michael Bakker it worked well last night. I turned it on today and it was leaking real bad. I am going to have to tear it apart next week it looks like but ty for asking.
Can't remember off hand, but might have taken a wood screw or drywall screw and put it through the hole and tilted it to get some grip and pulled. it was either that or a paper clip and bent one end to make shift a hook to kinda put through the hold and pull it out. Hope one of those works for you.
Thanks for the video so my Porter Cable will not turn off and then when I turn it off manually I hear a hissing for quite a while what do you think is my problem
there is a hole in the center (with o-ring to engage valve rod) it bleeds off excess air while regulating lower pressure. This regulator will not function as designed wth your recommended repair as it eliminates this necessary orifice.
Honestly I don't. I took what I had on hand in bowl of unused bolts, nuts and washers and put this together. The bolt was maybe 1" long and thin to replicate the piece that broke off. I don't know the size though, but I would guess in the 2mm to 3mm range with the appropriate nuts. If US sizes, then maybe a #3 or #4. Hope that helps.
You may have to get a small pliers or if the center of the piece is already popped out, you can use a metal hanger and bend it to go through the center to pull it out. It was a little hard to get out, but you should be able to get it out.
@@mbakker1969 I notice that the original plastic pin that was broken has a small air release hole in the middle. This hole allow the air to release when you un-tight the knob (so the pressure can go down??). Or May be I don't have the correct screw size......
Why isn't there a recall on these compressor if so many people having the same problem with them?!? I tell you what. Most Products now days are built cheap and not to last long at all. It's sad our product industry has come to this and the way they discount accountability these days!
John Puccetti, wouldn't hurt to try it. I looked it up and it looks ok. There is a lot of pressure there so that is why I used epoxy - but goop may work just as well. You are just trying to close any micro gaps where air would get through.
It's always a pisser when for 20 cents u could buy the little part new, but hell no. They want you to spend 60 bucks for a whole new regulator and hose attachments manifold. Disgusting.
Go look on Dewalt's factory repair page you can buy the parts they cost 1.80 its the 7 bucks for shipping and 3-5 day wait. I just placed an order for the parts but Mine didn't break like his did I have to rebuild the regulator. Also Amazon has them for 33 bucks. These are cake to fix.
Great great fix. I was very disappointed when mine broke and wouldn’t work but searched UA-cam and your fix did the trick. Thanks again!

Glad it worked for you!
Thanks for your help. Worked great. I used a 3/4 long 6-32.

nice little fix you did there on your little compressor with a little screw little washer and a little epoxy.

A leak path remains in the screw thread and nut joint, also between washer and nut. Those need to be sealed as well.

I took this regulator gasket out with a needle nose pliers and it was stiil intact. What I did was clean the inside cavity and exterior of the washer because they had accumulated dirt. Once I did this the leak stopped

Thanks
Michael you are the best. I did a test run, and now I am waiting for epoxy to dry. On my c2002 compressor cuts out at about 160psi. I measured the time and in exactly 45minutes tank pressure down to 90psi. I checked all the threaded nipples for a leak and could not find one. Is this normal for this compressor, and if not what do you suggest I check next?
Your tutorial skills are superb, and the photography clear and concise. Thank you for a most informative production!!!

Check to see if the small valve that the plastic piece pushes against is stuck. My was and drained down to 40 PSI and then stopped. Freed up the valve and works like new.
Thanks Michael, it worked like a charm.
Glad it worked out for you!
Great hack and thanks!
Wonderful fix.
My compressor it takes a lot of charge the tank... More of 30 min! Do you think it's the regulator's problem? Or the compressor cylinder?
I just ordered one of these compressors. It's reconditioned though.
I wonder if I'll have trouble too.
If I just leave the regulator alone, and just leave it set to 150 PSI will it be ok?
Wish I had seen this BEFORE wasting 20$ on another plastic piece!
Well, I am going to wait until this one breaks before screwing it and gluing it, but in time I suspect mine will look like yours as well.
Go in and try to fix now
what size bolt?
Is there a repair kit for the c2002 type 3? I can’t find one that says it’s for my model. I can’t try this repair fix either because that center disk is destroyed from me trying to pull it out.
Looks like there are repair kits out there now on Amazon for fairly cheap. These didn't exist when I fixed mine - guess there is more demand for this now and the price is reasonable for the new parts. Verify that these work for your specific model.

Michael, sure was glad to find your video! My son's Porter Cable has exactly this problem... so it's mine to repair. : >)
I don't claim to know how the regulator works, but the plastic piece that breaks off has a pilot hole through its center.
Michael
having trouble getting round black piece of plastic ... any suggestions on getting it out???
Been awhile since I've been on, sorry I missed this. don't know how yours broke off, but i used a small needle nosed pliers to get it out. If it's stuck in and nothing to grab onto, you can find a screw or something to poke into the center and try to put pressure on the sides as you try to pull it out. Good luck!

I got the small round plastic piece out now trying to get the cover over regulator to come off.
Thank you Michael, would it be to much if you could give me the dimensions of the metal screw. I didn't catch the size, 1" or 2".
How did this work out for you Robert?
Michael Bakker it worked well last night. I turned it on today and it was leaking real bad. I am going to have to tear it apart next week it looks like but ty for asking.
That’s a Great DIY fix. I took the knob, spring and broken center piece out, but the outer ring seems stuck, how did you get that part out?
Can't remember off hand, but might have taken a wood screw or drywall screw and put it through the hole and tilted it to get some grip and pulled. it was either that or a paper clip and bent one end to make shift a hook to kinda put through the hold and pull it out. Hope one of those works for you.
Thanks for the video so my Porter Cable will not turn off and then when I turn it off manually I hear a hissing for quite a while what do you think is my problem
Check valve, for those reading this more recently.
What sized hardware did you use
there is a hole in the center (with o-ring to engage valve rod) it bleeds off excess air while regulating lower pressure. This regulator will not function as designed wth your recommended repair as it eliminates this necessary orifice.
Perfect for a 3D print. We need a 3d expert to create the simple file for us.
Do you remember the size of the screw/nut assembly? I've got to try this. Thanks
@@mbakker1969 Thanks for the speedy reply. That'll help me a lot. Thanks again.
Fixed it!!! Thanks,
How did you get the plastic piece out mine won't come out
You may have to get a small pliers or if the center of the piece is already popped out, you can use a metal hanger and bend it to go through the center to pull it out. It was a little hard to get out, but you should be able to get it out.
Michael Bakker okay thanks man
Thank You!
after apply this fix, the pressure can only go up but won't go down. It that normal?
it should go up and down depending on how far you adjust the dial/knob. If you have it on too tight it will be set for a high presure.
@@mbakker1969 I notice that the original plastic pin that was broken has a small air release hole in the middle. This hole allow the air to release when you un-tight the knob (so the pressure can go down??). Or May be I don't have the correct screw size......
This compressor was made to work on.
Why isn't there a recall on these compressor if so many people having the same problem with them?!? I tell you what. Most Products now days are built cheap and not to last long at all. It's sad our product industry has come to this and the way they discount accountability these days!
Thanks ..just fixed myne..
Good solution, but this way the regulator will not be able to reduce working pressure.
Do you think Goop would work?
@@bobbg9041 Thanks.👍
Them porta cables are junk I got a brand new one leaked in every joint just a junk box
