Fixing a Porter Cable C2002 Regulator

  • Porter Cable has a nice air compressor in the C2002 but it has a plastic part in the regulator that regularly fails for many people. To make matters worse, they don't sell just the plastic part to replace it but only the whole manifold which costs nearly as much as the compressor to begin with.
This video will show a simple way to repair the piece in the regulator without needing to buy anything. Simply take the regulator apart, enlarge the broken hole a little and fit the broken piece in through the back. A small dab of glue should seal the leak around the repaired part.

*Construction seemed sturdier than other units I considered **MyBest.Tools** Noise level was reasonable. Good pressure and cfm capacity for a small reasonably light compressor.*

Functionally operates just as it should ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxiiMg_x4gIWeXMWfBnDdRnME4qJUAva4w holds pressure perfectly when not in use. Glad one of the other reviews pointed out that the bottom pressure release valve was open; thought it was defective at first.

This is a great and helpful video that saves people a lot of needless expense thanks to a poorly designed, cheap plastic part. Thank you for it! One note as others have mentioned, if you put a metal washer with a small hole in it in between the spring and the black plunger, that little piece that broke off that you wedged back in there won't pop back out, as mine did several times before I put the washer in.

I used a T-15 to get the screw loose and the cover off. This video fixed my Porter Cable compressor, which I have had for about 3 years. I had the exact problem Randall described and this fixed it. I did not try to glue the "fix", and my tank pressure did drop a bit, but not big deal. This saved me ~$60, because I did not have to buy a new regulator on eBay! Randall - you rock! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • @jsiniguez

Excellent video, thanks for the fix. I have had this compressor for over a year now. Rarely use, rarely use the knob regulator feature as well come to think of it. But today it broke. Same symptoms as you have on your video. But I fixed it exact to your recommendation. Yes a minor leak, afterwards but nothing unbearable. A person could always come back to it and reseal with some high strength silicon as I'm sure any home depot would have on the shelves.
Also I did not have to remove the plastic cover, I didn't need to really. Even though I do have a 10mm torx tool. There was no need to do this extra step.
Easy access without the removal of the plastic guard.
Anyway thanks again, your fix got me rolling again, and within minutes!

  • @paulkdickson

    Awesome tip! Thanks!
Keep in mind there is a small oring the size of the end of the regulator piston that sits around the “nipple” of the broken plastic piece. It creates an air tight seal, but allows air to escape through when you back off the regulator tightness during operation.
Again, great tip! Don’t think i’d have thought of that myself!

Randall, thanks for the fix. Here's a few notes others may find useful:
    - The screw for the cover is a Torx T10 (not a T15 mentioned in another comment). If you don't have a Torx screwdriver they're available at most hardware stores.
    - I experienced the same issue as *djay been* below: the flange inserted through the back didn't hold, and it separated a 2nd time. This time the break was completely clean, and with nothing to 'hold' made gluing out of the question.
    - I followed djay been's suggestion of replacing the flange with a screw and nut. I used a #10 x 3/8" machine screw and nut. A round head slotted screw works best - the base of the head is flat to seal against the plastic disc. A higher thread count (#10-32 instead of #10-24) gives a better grip. Insert the screw through the disc hole from the back, making the head towards the compressor and the threads on the spring side. Center the screw in the hole and tighten the nut.
    - Make the screw air tight by applying some JB Weld around the outer edges of the screw on both sides of the disc. You can also place some where the thread and nut meet to prevent the nut from backing out. Be careful to keep the JB Weld off the outer edge of the black disc. Let sit overnight to fully cure.
    Hope this helps, thanks again...

Well, that's weird! My P-C compressor uses Torx T-20 screws to hold it together, NOT T-15 or T-10! OK, it's a different model (C2005, which looks almost exactly like this one), but it's kinda crazy that Porter-Cable doesn't use the same screws across the brand.

This was exactly what I needed! Thanks for posting. One modification I made, because that little piece wouldn't stay put (it got pushed out in both directions) is I added a metal washer between the spring and the round plunger. The hole on the washer was small enough that it kept the little piece from pushing all the way out. A lot of air still leaks (currently waiting on super glue to set to hopefully resolve that) but I'm able to get around 100 psi which is enough to drive the finish nailer I need. Thanks again!

I took the regulator knob off and the inner part had separated into two pieces, the problem is that I cannot get the plastic ring to come out tried various small screwdrivers but no luck.
It has been setting unused for a couple of years that may have contributed to the stuck ring, any suggestions on getting it out?
      Thanks

Thank you! I was ready to discard my C2002 and then saw your video. The same plastic pieces was broken off. Your fix worked; I used a round rasp to enlarge the hole ever so slightly, and used cyanoacrylate glue between the pieces as well as along the seam on both sides. I do still hear a leak, but not if the regulator is turned all the way down. It's possible the O-ring also needs replacing. BTW, on mine the bezel screw is a Torx T20 and not T10 or T15 that others have found on theirs.

Thanks for saving me $150 bucks, i took a 5/16 drill bit and turned it by hand to open the hole inside the plastic part instead of sisscors, works like new,its ashame porter cable has let this problem go on for years for such an easy fix!!!!!! i will add something else if this fails to work you can still get air if you remove the screw on the opposite side and replace it with the quick connect from the opposite side, although you have no way to regulate air pressure you can use it to blow and inflate tires,ect..........

  • @michaelstayman3288

Thanks for a great video and advice. In my case, the plastic disk was not broken. I then removed the threaded metal cap on the opposite side to remove the valve stem and found that the valve stem was stuck. I had to pull the the valve stem apart with a lot of force. I found that the rubber gasket was gummy and sticky. A little bit of Hayward Jack's Lube, a silicone gasket lubricant that I use for my swimming pool equipment, around all of the rubber gaskets as I reassembled did the trick. Now the regulator works like new! Perhaps a sticky valve stem is putting too much force on the plastic disk and leads to breakage. Your video got me thinking and I solved my particular case. Thank you!

THANK YOU!!! When I tried to use my compressor again recently I had the problem of pressure in the tank but no pressure to the regulator side for my tools. I watched all of the video and was able to fix this on my own, if I can fix this ANYONE can fix this.
I didn't even remove the plastic cover. Once I unscrewed the black knob and looked inside it there was the spring and the broken piece sitting inside it. I hand turned a drill bit of sufficient size to make the hole a little bigger, pushed it back through the hole and slid the piece back into place. As you mention, there was a slow leak, so it's usable but not fixed until you use JB Weld to secure/seal the plug. I applied just a dab of the epoxy around the hole on both sides with a toothpick and let it cure for 24 hours. There is NO leak after doing this, it's as good as new.

MY COMPRESSOR WAS 6 YEARS OLD AND I USED IT MAYBE TEN TIME DURING THOSE YEARS...and it broke..Junk! Thanks for the video, I'll see if I can fix it.
Update: OK fixed it. I used a 5/16 inch drill bit to ream out the center hole. It is the same diameter as the broken pin...then using a wood mallet, tapped it into place. Tight fit, and no obvious leaks. The screw that hold the shield in place is a 2 mm allen head.

my pressure plate was not broken, however I could see a small piece of rubber protruding out from around the pin the plate touches. I removed the threaded cover plate on the back and found a rubber seal, such like those on faucets had dislodged from the shoulder of that same pin. I reseated the gasket on the pin's shoulder and reassembled the unit. Fixed. 1st time it pumped to 160psi in a year. While you have it open look for this leaking seal also! I have a Type 7.

I had the same issue and was able to try and repair using this video. However, once I replaced the plastic piece, the pressure wouldn't build up in the tank. It would just come out the two ports where you connect the hose and we never had that problem before. I inserted a line into each port, the pressure started building in the tank. Hopefully that won't cause another problem!

Great fix. Also, thingiverse site has the 3D file where you can download and 3D print it. If you don't have a printer, you can load it into a memory card and take to your local library. Sometimes they have 3D Printers and the can print for you.
