The Lost Magic of Older Games

- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Why do older video games feel so much different than what we see today? In this video essay, we’ll dive deep into the “lost magic” of games from the 90s and early 2000s-titles that sparked curiosity, imagination, and even a bit of inspiration. From early 3D adventures to modern classics, these games had something special, something that many feel has faded from today’s typical AAA releases.
Together, we’ll explore the role of nostalgia and the impact of creative limitations developers faced back then, which led to some of the most innovative and memorable experiences in gaming history. With simpler technology, creators were often forced to think outside the box, finding ways to build worlds and tell stories that left lasting impressions. These games didn’t just rely on graphics processing power or huge budgets-they had heart and soul, qualities that kept us coming back, even years later.Whether you grew up playing these titles or are just discovering them, join me as we revisit the elements that made these older games so magical. Thanks for watching, and let’s see if we can rediscover some of that lost magic together.

Which special game from your past do you still play regularly?
I sometimes hop back on and play a lot of pop cap games, I had a plants vs zombies burn out but If I have it set up, I usually go back to playing bejeweled 3, Peggle, and Bookworm games
Pokémon Snap and Super Mario 64.
Ocarina of Time will forever have my heart
Harvest moon: Magical Melody!
most of them i still do. Modern AAA woke/DEI are pure slop-crap
As someone who din't grew up with a video game (my family was poor so they couldn't afford it), i can 100% say its not pure nostalgia a lot of older games that i started playing recently just have a unique charm to it, its maybe because genres where more undefined so a lot of games feel more experimental and unique compared to recent games, that often feel too similar to eachother, and i think the older graphics also help this experience, not because they bring nostalgia but rather because it feels like a totally different world from ours and this makes it feel magic

To me it’s simple, Games then were Passions, but now there are products
The most accurate description for me as well.. Too much copy behaviour as well just to cash out on popular genres etc.
They were definitely for profit back then. That was what caused the first video game industry collapse. We just don't remember all of the old garbage games because they weren't good enough to remember.
Nostalgia does play a role - anyone arguing otherwise doesn't understand human psyche - but the game industry back then was far less developed and as consequence more innovative. You could tell when small teams have a passion for a project. That's not to say people weren't cloning ideas from eachother in the 90s, but games were willing to diverge or try new things far more readily.
There were tons of shovelware garbage throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s but you saw innovations every few months. The fact devs worked with huge technical limitations paradoxically helped: limitations breed innovation.
We have essentially 2-3 game categories nowadays that dominate 90% of the AAA industry: fps and third person over the shoulder shooters/action adventure games. It's why indy will continue to grow especially as tech becomes easier.
Just think about how little variety we see in the AAA and AA space:
- Fixed camera angles or cameras on tracks are gone
- 2D and 2.5D aren't funded
- RPG elements are now in everything just to prolong the experience
- UI elements are all pretty much identical nowadays
- Consultancy groups water down anything that could be seen as insensitive to the largest 4 markets (US, Japan, Europe and increasingly China)
- Platformers, RPGs, rail shooters, stealth etc are increasingly rare
- There's a perverse incentive to keep projects large in this space
- The concept of a game being DONE at launch is gone. We aren't even having the same experiences as eachother anymore
That last part is so true. Early Access has gotten out of control too
The genre of dudes in front of green screens talking about video games will always be one of my favorites.
Ssx 3 is my most nostalgic game. Played again last year and it was still amazing. I would kill for a new entry in the ssx line
You just unlocked a core memory from my childhood lol
Bro I thought you said Sex 3 lmao
@@enzoreda2249 bro I was introduced to SSX 3 or maybe tricky I can’t remember exactly which one (but have played both) and those games fuckin ripped bro tight controls and just a fun experience. I remember just going free roam from the top to the bottom
Pokemon taught me to always look in the trash and visit people homes to learn about their snippit of life. Being locked out of Grandpa Gurungos house and not getting told that his granddaughter battles Cynthia but lost due to her Spoink sneezing getting it Kod by Garchomp. Borderlands taught me to look under stairs and actually explore the world fully for hidden content. Games lacking the smaller scope things have hit really hard in the immersion field. And compared to modern games the oldies were less hand holdey in terms of consequences. I played Splinter Cell for the first time and shot the lady I rescued in the head. I was shocked cause i legit forgot we used to have freedom in choice and got told I failed and then mission failed lol nowadays you'd just get an x appearing over the crosshair and inability to shoot.
😂 dude, I feel your pain! I finally got around to playing the RE4Make and just beat it a few days ago. Anyway, there were a handful of times that I killed Ashley instead of the zombified villager. And then the game just has the audacity to NOT let me pass?! 😂
The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past DEFINITELY holds up. I recently played through it again after about 25 years (last full playthrough i did was in 1998). I got just as engrossed and invested as i was when i first played it as an 11 year old kid. Amazing experience.
I hadn't played Silent Hill 2, Half-Life, Portal, Silent Hill 3, or F.E.A.R. until 2018 at the earliest. I love those games to death now. It's 100% not a nostalgia thing... they're just amazing games that have something that newer games just don't. Even those games' subsequent releases were just not as good, imo. Really interesting.
Wow... very good video man.
I know this takes a lot of time, great work, day by day it will pay off
The one game that brought me that magic back everytime I came back to it was actually animal crossing on the GameCube it’s replay ability is just unmatched and I think thats what new games are missing that infinity replay ability that many old games had, great video btw!!
One of my favorites - great choice!
Agree with this.
Love the video. You hit all the right notes! It's hard to find modern games that really stand out, I would have to say I'm grateful for the indie gaming creators who have been pumping out work that carries the magic of older games to the new age.
I think the bigger thing is most games look the same. Most premium titles that aren’t Nintendo looks like they want to be this ultra realistic looking game where yeah it’s cool to see those beautiful visuals but when every game looks like that then no game looks visually appealing. It’s how they’ll remake older games and to make the visual modern(make it look like the unity engine demo) or try to capture it but failing because it wasn’t about being vibrant but and make them look like action figures from the 80s and 90s not reality the thing was making us fill the gaps in our mind. The fact 500gb games don’t visually look good but the models are compared to early ps3 is atrocious where the games have too many visual filters or too contrasting to hide those things
Plus it’s sad to know nearly half of all devs use the unreal engine and they don’t try to build and create engines that helps emphasize what made what the engine is implied for work, just look how much EA tries to force frostbite into their sports titles. They were bad… like setting the series back bad
It’s simply people that pay to be on boards of these companies don’t understand video games fundamentally but know they can make that bigger green than what a movie can ever do
earned a subscribe from the quality of writing, i can tell you take this serious
Damn great video. Subbed. Def not just nostalgia. I’ve played so many title recently through emulation that I’ve never touched prior and I still get that same satisfaction.
Good video. Can see the effort put in for a small channel. Commenting for algorithm bump keep it up bro
This video reminds me of Internet Pitstop, which is one of my favorites. So, I would say I'm in good company with this channel.
You've put my nostalgic sentiments into words perfectly
So... games were generally more innovative back then because it was gaming's first Renaissance. From around 83 to 2006, there was so much new happening in the industry. Much like how music went through the rock Renaissance between the 50s and 80s.
We still get good games, much like how we still get good music from time to time. But they're few and far between.
There's a lot of great games, it's just rarely one of the AAA titles that bombard you with endless marketing campaigns. The indie and AA scene has a ton of innovative games, often for 1/2 or 1/3 of the price of a AAA game.
@@matman000000and the indie scene it's basically a mix of homage/inspiration and expansión of games from that era, so...the points still Stands, the "old way" of doing games still are were the innovation and creativity goes, the triple AAA side it's too corporativo for it's own sake, it's basically the "Hollywood way" of doing things but shoehorned to games
When it comes to recent games that prioritized art style over graphical fidelity, Prince of Persia the Lost Crown looks great with backgrounds that have great scale to them and have that painted look to them.
I can at least say it isn't nostalgia on my part. When I was old enough to buy my own games the ps4 was already out and I played a lot of different games. It took a while after that until I got a decent PC and was able to emulate older games from gamecube and before. Some of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I had were me playing Majoras mask or Thief gold/metal age. This was after I played all the stuff that was inspired by those games. Games back then were focused on having the best experience possible because that is what sold copies back in the day. No point in rpg elements or copy paste content to fill the time, no template to copy, no committy to please. I am not completely blackpilled on games. There still are gems being released here and there. I recently gone through Lies of P and its one of the greats in my opinion. I guess there is a lot more slop games and slop in decent games.
I think one of the big factors often not brought up is just simply the environment. The old games were fantastical and vvery exotic, almost like an old James Bond movie.
There were countless games with lush jungles and waterfalls and siland beaches. Water in particular was a BIG part of the 90's and 2000's sort of Faustian, transcendent aesthetics. The kinda maps people bow make Ambient Jungle music mixs to on UA-cam now.
But after about the mid 2000s Realism and emersion became the primary focus. And gone were the days of isolated gorgeous islands and hidden jungle temples far from the mundane and claustrophobic cities or grand space adventures. Now instead pur maps were the boring cities we were trying to escape. Now games were unironically taking place in offices with cubicles and parking garages and washed out ruined middle eastern cities.
We went from epic fantasies to real life again. Just look at the difference between GTA Vice City and GTA V. Both are set in a large busy modern day city. But one is absolutely beautiful and stylish and the other is just LA but with less traffic. These two games were barely more than a decade apart, yet look gow drastically different their environments are. Their style is. Just look at half the background footage in this video.
25:34 I’m so glad I’m not the only one who played with Pokeballs only on 😂🤝
There are dozens of us!
@@GrassToucherTV good man!
Great video! Keep up the amazing work, the editing was top notch. 😁
Playing games designed for CRTs on CRT’s (or using a good CRT shader) is a unique feeling. I played Super Mario RPG for the first time recently and the simple art style was really enjoyable.
I can count on one hand how many games in the past 10 years gave me that fun feeling... 3. The Witcher 3, BG3 and Cyberpunk.
Ive been meaning to try BG3 or Cyberpunk. I hear nothing but praise for these games - I’ll pick one up on Steam during the winter sale!
@@GrassToucherTVas someone who claimed in 2020 that they would NEVER touch cyberpunk due to how bad release was, I took a step back and had to look at the entire history of the game. I bought it on the Xbox Black Friday sale and I’m having an amazing time with it. I can already see the variety of playstyles and its definitely worth the pickup during steam winter
I've recently started a N64 collection, mainly games from my childhood, but my 7 year old son absolutely loves to play the old games with me. From Gauntlet Legends, Diddy Kong racing, Pokemon Stadium and now Smash 64. Old games do have a special something about them.
I just got done playing DOOM on the PS1 ..... For the 200th time..... Its still better than anything made in the past 12 years.
Unbelievable - more content than every single game put together on the PS4 and PS5 put together.
some of it is nostalgia, but no one with a clear mind can honestly say "its just nostalgia" after comparing stealth in star wars outlaws to stealth in metal gear solid 2 and 3 or the splinter cell games. clearly some key ingredients to the sauce have been forgotten.
Hell yeah keep it up bro. Subbed. I did put the vid at 1x25 for the talking pace but honestly great content 👌
God of war ragnarok, The Last Of Us Part 2 and Elden ring are some of the best new games out there.
Not gonna lie, i didn't notice your eyebrows until you mentioned them and now i cannot unsee them. Those are badass eyebrows, i must admit.
Nice Video! Looking forward to seeing more of your content 🤙🏼
Majorss mask is the only game i can think of where doing 100% run genuinely improves the gaming experience
Pokémon Red hit different-8-bit chaos and pure magic. OG WoW? Elwynn Forest felt like Narnia before everyone got sweaty with DPS charts. Simpler times, better vibes.
27:37 I always said it as "GameFAQs", like a whole word. I was surprised to hear most people spelling it out "Game F A Qs" when I first heard it talked about out loud. But then again, I heard of GameFAQs before I even knew that FAQs was an acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. I just thought it was just a cool alternate spelling of "facts" as a kid. Then later on, I realized that it could be interpreted as a double entendre, being both frequently asked questions and facts on the subject matter. 😅
When we got new shinny features, we lost some parts that were awesome. Before the internet, games had to be shipped completed. Now we get unfinished games with a patch on release.
Its not all bad, but I do miss arcades. A fun, complete game with friends and the only fear being we don't have enough quarters.
I know people trash on the industry’s focus on improving graphics. But it would be cool to see a video that focuses on that amazing jump from Xbox to Xbox 360, or PS1 to PS2 graphics. THOSE changes were significant and I don’t think anything now can compare to the amazing graphical leap that gaming had during that time
Great video, lovely editing, funy bits :)
Mind I give some constructive criticism? It of course only being a suggest.
1. You don't need to be in every "scene" of the video. Sometimes going a few segments without seeing you, so I can focus on the game or what ever else is showing and really get what you're trying to covey. Ironically, you being present so much makes you more of a distraction rather than a highlight. In this case, turning it down just somewhat would help the balance of GrassToucher scenes and everything else scenes.
2. You gotta either get a better mic, or make the room you're recording in have better acoustic. The echo/reverberation is kinda deafing once you notice it. It just kinda gives this faint headache feeling listening to it for a extended period.
But again! These are nitpicks! You're making really good content and the editing is wonderful. I can tell a lot of time and effort have been put into that as well as the script! Good job dude :D
I still get just as much enjoyment, and satisfaction out of playing a bunch of my older 90s games, still to this day!! Albeit, slightly upscaled and running through the new amazement of my smart phone or other handheld device that my 12 to 14-year-old brain would have been blown away by back then so I guess that adds to it?
Speaking on the limitations, I think certain games benefited from the limitations of the hardware making them way better like in silent Hill one and two the fog and and other PS1, horror games like resident evil, the pixelated graphics made it feel more raw? More dirty and decrepit in decayed which contributed to the tone and atmosphere of the game and the player feeling more unease!!
Subscribed. I’ve been explaining to people that “limitation can lead to creativity” for years in the same context. You and I are on the same page brother
8:06 That and the fact devs weren't entirely P whipped into submission by shareholders, DEI and executives.
Is DEI in the room with you right now... I'm sorry that minorities offend you
The magic is not losed they are still amking old scholl style games now
good vid man, I'm playing MGS1 again right now with the PS 30th Anniversary Dualsense and getting them old school feels
Nostalgia is why people think gta5, bo2, and mw2 are the best games ever made. They didn't grow up with Nintendo, even to this day Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 are the few games I still have a fucking blast playing just as much as when I was 4 years old.
We’re simply older now. We used to believe in Santa, watch Saturday morning cartoons, play with our GI Joes, and get lost in fantasy land for hours. Everything is better as a kid.
I replayed pokemon Red and Silver in college (early 20s) and it was still awesome. Still have a gameboy advance sp. I did have to replace the batteries in the cartridges, lol.
Older I get. I’m convinced the n64 was some weird drug test alien alt world thing, I think. PS1 was cool too
I see very little reason to go back to 32- and 64-bit era... Previous gens and the one following has better games, IMO.
Totally disagree cause there's even genres that are barely touched nowadays that I'm the 32/64 bit era had plenty of variety In genres and ltjer genres that are stale like sports games, fighting, platformers, Racing games, turn based rpgs
I wanted to get into fire emblem, so I bought path of radiance. It’s impeccable
That’s a series I’ve always wanted to try!
The reason, that at least for me seems to be too obvious, is that with time, our brains adapt to spark more quick dopamine by playing games, that continuously focus on more graphics and effects. Older games had to make sense, because no one would play a shitty looking game that's also useless. Experiencing meaning is fulfilling and lasts longer, even forever.
I don't think that's the case. Devs have always been trying to push graphical detail and people were buying new consoles and PCs to play the best looking games. Those old games might look shitty now, but there was a time when MGS 2, Half-Life 2 or Heavy Rain were as real as you could possibly get. I remember being amazed when I turned on HDR in Oblivion or visited Rapture for the first time.
You've read a lot of this stuff, but you haven't lived it, and it shows. Still, cool take and good YT recommendation. Best.
Remember when zelda had actually a good story? And cool items? And good music? … yeah i miss those days too
It isn't just nostalgia. With my steam deck I've recently gone back to games I missed out on in my childhood the ps1 era , I'm playing the original resident evil 2 as I was to scared to play it when I was a kid lol and I got to say I prefer it to the remake lol the crunchy sound design those pre rendered backgrounds and that God damn terrible voice acting , I love how developers used creative ways to work with the limitations of the hardware back then, I allways wanted better graphics when I was young , now I allways gravitate towards retro looking indies because they have a soul and passion that's lacking these days.
Deus Ex 1, Thief 1 and 2, and System Shock 2 i played all of those after Deus Ex Human Revolution, and. Yhey were all still incredible. Good games are good games. Might have some rust and clunk, but good game design is timeless.
That's definitely two caterpillars, I thought something was off..?!-
Or "ON" in this case..
At least Nintendo still feels like they captured some of the purple gas that harnesses creativity. I feel that although video games back then were still a huge industry companies still treated it like a fun hobby and not a product that have to please shareholders while getting gamers addicted to gambling
For a lot of games, it's not nostalgia. Nobody has ever been able to match the power of Oot, not even Nintendo. I mean just look at BotW, it's not even a real Zelda game. How pathetic.
No EULAS, no microtansactions, no updates that completely change the game from what it originally was, I'd say those were all good things. So yea, not nostalgia.
Crash Trilogy was probably one of the best remakes I've ever seen and that game was just as fun as when I first played it.
Now looking at things like Theme Hospital and Theme Park...yea, I can't go back to those. Some things didn't age well, but other things that were made in the past CANNOT even remotely be touched in this modern day. I mean just look at Back 4 Blood and Left 4 Dead. The creators back then had real passion and they cared about the little details, but now? Well, the work speaks for itself.
Also Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the best video games ever created, and no, it's not nostalgia, because it would put to shame any modern video game in this day and age if it was remade today. Seriously, it's a shame that people in this day and age STILL don't know about that game. They only know Panzer Dragoon for it's rail shooter games, but that JRPG is AMAZING.
Now that's not to say that some games made in this day and age aren't good, because that would be silly, but with the main focus being on cringe activism with some of these developers, they have ruined a decades worth of games, just to preach on their soap box about a thing that was never an issue in the first place.
But that's why nostalgia is dangerous, because there are those that would wear the dead skins of your beloved franchises, prancing around, demoralize and mocking you and what you loved. It's sickening. They'll also pull the "if you don't buy this, then we won't make anymore", basically using your beloved franchise as a hostage, while also defiling it. Absolutely disgusting behavior. These companies deserve to be shut down for only being a shell of their former selves. They deserve no success, no money, only failure and shut down. The people that made what we loved are no longer there in both company and in mindset. A lot of people to not understand that creators themselves shouldn't be allowed to touch their own older works, because they are no longer within that same place in time, that same mindset when they made those decisions, thus, they'll more than likely screw something up, like Nomura for instance.
I also have NO idea what happened with wallstreet, because all these companies were always publicaly traded, yet they were able to take risks back in the day and make weird stuff, but now, they don't make those risks anymore. It's baffling. I don't get it. I know they have to make as much money for their shareholders as possible, which that is why art can't thrive in that type of environment, however like I said, they used to take risks, so what changed?
At least Nintendo still prioritizes fun/gameplay
Okami was ok. I think lots of games back then still had hyper realistic graphics. They just didn't age well. And lots of games still have amazing art styles. Lots of games where based on movies which where boring,
Okay okay!! I'm having fun i swear!
Born in the 90s.... I feel sorry for you poor bastards..... At least this guy understands.
I grew up around 90s-2006 and I think some banger games came out when gaming blew up on UA-cam. But lately? I feel like "meh" at a lot of stuff. And stuff like Dragon Age looks shit these days. I feel like entertainment kinda sucks often now. Gen Alpha got fucked over, man. I wish they got to local game more, I loved it. And micro that are macro transactions? Fuuuuck off. And let me OWN my game, ugh. But great video, well done.
Edit: This made me think, it's kinda like good vs interesting. I kinda like it looking video game-y sometimes if that makes sense. Realism has it's place but I'd like variety and vibrant colours too. Dark and gritty has it's place too, but yeah, mix it up. Have your own style. The Walking Dead's beginning is probably best for me even though it looks higher quality later. I do really enjoy og video game music I gotta add. It's just so different.
It’s because when you’re little you don’t expect shit, so everything seems new and exciting (edit) great vid tho
Games had more creativity. In those days
What's the tune at 13:34 and why do I recognise it?
Bro i still have my original banjo kazooie. It doesnt save but theres no battery. However the 4k n64 is said to support save states so 🤞
I can sum the way older games were made in one word. "Passion" The game devs made a game they wanted to play too. Not only that they committed to what universe they took part in. Mostly because of modern games forcing woke shit. I get it but I want to escape the world and forget the pains that are already in the world. If a game doesn't have passion and committed to its genre will make a 1000x difference in being better than a game that looks good but wants to be multiple genres *cough gow Ragnarok cough* A dedication to what game it is will always be better. Look at BotW people went wild for it, I haven't played it but it encapsulates the Open World Genre very well, to me my peak of Open world is Skyrim and the most recent one that I don't consider part of its franchise is Assassin's Creed Origins. Its a good open world game but not a Assassin's Creed game.
digital laxatives is fucking insane
I do be shiddn
@ a bowel movement of sorts????
It's weird you talked about the fog in Silent Hill 2 like it was the first game
I think you missed a couple of important points. I grew up with the first gaming computers. Pong, Atari 2600, eventually Commodore 64, etc. Almost all those games, for that era, were highly replayable. They were also (mostly) only released when ready - there was no Internet to update them. Why did so many of us youths spend millions on PacMan? Because it was replayable. I can give you a list: Lode Runner, Jump Man, Ultima III, Worms, Missile Command, Ms. PacMan, Dungeon Keeper, StarCraft, Diablo, Fallout (1and 2), - Hell, even titles like Zork, Myst, etc. Age of Empires and AOE2, - Again, hell, AOE2 is STILL being played today, as is StarCraft. Modern games lose that magic by not focusing on game play, but, rather, spectacle.
By the way, you brought it up, but older games felt better. One of my favorite comparisons in relatively modern gaming is Dark Souls to Mario Brothers. Both are intensely fair because the controls and gameplay, once you learn them, are very fair overall. If you die, it is because you messed up, not the game. Both are highly replayable and both focus much more on game play than graphics.
Going back to the Atari 2600, I can't tell you how many times I replayed "Adventure" - in today's terms, one of the most boring games you could play, but at that time it was monumental. And it inspired my imagination.
Well someone went to the Internet Pitstop... great video though!
Cool video; the reverb in your room is super strong tho, consider buying some corner bumps and carpeting to reduce it.
18:00 Hi-Fi Rush is a better example. Let it Die is a better example. Elden Ring doesn't have anything special in terms of artstyle, it's just colors and fog with poor graphics; models try to look as human as possible, and the same for weapons and animations. Even DMC could be a better example.
24:05 you never did own the products. On the back of the box you can read that's a license; you were just a kid and your parents didn't understand the legal terms, and you didn't care to learn about them. Reselling, renting it, all of it illegal from the start; you're just being made aware of it now because you're paying from your wallet. It's a lifetime license that can be revoked if you break the legal terms you agree to when purchasing the product, like for example, reselling, renting, or reproducing the content without authorization (it's illegal to make youtube videos reproducing content for example, which is how Nintendo copyright strikes all youtubers reproducing content without authorization; if Nintendo finds your video reproducing Mario 64 they are entitled to strike your video down, and even sue you).
GameFAQs was always a trollfest
Bro throwing shade at ps1 hagred! UNSUBBED!!! lol great video definitely subbed!
hogwarts legacy reminds me of older games😊
I think it's pretty simple. A lot of older games were happy and colorful. Most modern games have desaturated colors and darker themes, because they believe that's "realistic." Ironically, modern games end up feeling off, because real life doesn't actually have desaturated colors like contemporary artists seem to believe.
multiply u say multee, but multiplayer saying multhai and player, should be multee player, makes more sence but when i type in google translate (multiplayer) and press voice, guess what? it says ...
it says multee player (its an E, not I), not multhai player, so which is it, it bugs me to hell and back
or both are acceptable, or the one with I is USA and one with E is UK? OMG :) I know its silly but ...
Digital laxatives 😂

Old games take imagination because they graphics were bad your brain woould make up the difference
I blame Microsoft for making gaming money centric. They saw a market to harvest money from instead of a market to entertain.
