Collet 1000 more to get this achievement," and then maybe you +10% damage to fire based enemies who float in the air or some random bonus. It's just so boring and bland. That's honestly the way it's supposed to be, as it's called a videoGAME. A lot of games nowadays focus too much on telling a story because they know that having a lot of cutscenes and dialogue will attract more audience, but usually with those games the gameplay loop is okay at best.

The continuation of colorful mascot platformers with the burgeoning of shooters. Western RPGs from PC coming over to Xbox while JRPGs flourish on PS2. The artistic license that Nintendo's IP would take while fresh new ones experimented. 1 to 1 arcade ports on the Dreamcast, and the GBA carrying the torch for 2D games and ports of past games that you can put in your pocket.

That’s because they make games first before stories - super Mario bros was a platformer first while being developed, and the story was given to complement that gameplay (instead of jumping block to block, you’re doing so in pursuit of a quest).
Nowadays it’s story first, gameplay next, which is why most game have the same Skeleton outline of mechanics (namely the likes of Ubisoft) because it’s not worried about the actual moment to moment gameplay, they see it as interchangeable, it’s instead worried about how well a story is delivered through 4K graphic cutscenes and actor mo-cap. Ehhh, I kinda agree GoW 2 was peak but at the same time I can’t even play the older GoWs anymore. The Hack n Slash gameplay was amazing back then, but after 6 GoW games it was definitely stale and wasn’t fun anymore.
Bought and played GoW 1 and 2 on the PS2 when they released, bought their eventual PS3 Remasters, did the same thing for the 2 PSP GoW games and their PS3 Remasters.
I absolutely loved every second of them and got the Plats for all of them, same for GoW 3 as well, it was a great and epic send off to the series. And then Ascension released 3 years after GoW 3 and all that fun and exciting gameplay I loved wasn’t there anymore
I was over it. Because of it I actually didn’t even bother keeping up with 2018. Never watched the trailers or read reviews / any discussions about it, so I had no idea they revamped the gameplay.
Back when PS Now (Gamepass) was a thing, they had GoW 3 PS4 Remaster on there and I immediately booted it up, was filled with so much nostalgia and excitement, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the epic moments in 3….and then I started playing it and didn’t even make it past an hour before turning it off
Comment ended up longer than I expected lol oops! But i ended up playing GoW 2018 around 2021 and was blown away. I couldn’t put it down, killed all the Valkyries, got the Plat, immediately replayed and beat it shortly after.
It was exactly what I was looking for. I’ll agree that the OGs felt more ‘epic’, better enemy variety, and better bosses overall (especially compared to 2018). But even so, I think the new ones are just better overall and were the right change

It feels incredibly video game-y and is also cinematic through the chaotic gameplay. The close up, over the shoulder third person narrative genre has become so derivative I can’t stand to play those kinds of games any more. We have Naughty Dog to thank for popularizing that. Right after I completed the main story, I thought "oh now I will finish the rest of the activities"...I uninstalled the game after 2 hours because I felt that exact "nah, I am good" thing. Probably won't bother replaying it for at least 2-3 years. Strangely, for me, I think games don't feel gamey because of the graphics. 10-15 years ago, I was obsessed with games striving to achieve photorealism: the reflections, the lighting, the textures. And now, where we are closer than ever...I...am not as impressed as I thought I would be. They target the end points of the spectrum: addicts and casuals because that is where the most money is. The other thing that these conversations miss is that games just won't be the same as you get older and naturally take on more responsibility in your life. You just don't have the same time and interest to replay games. And that is probably a good thing. Replaying God Of War 2018 a few years ago was a huge mistake. I just did not enjoy it very much the second time around. It really made me realize that I do not care for very cutscene heavy, "movie" games anymore. I don't like when control is taken away from me so much, and I have to set the controller down every five minutes 🙄
I gave Ragnarok a shot, but only made it like 2 hours in and dropped it, probably never going to finish it.

The problem with "cinematic" video games that plagued the industry from 7th gen and onwards is they try to be both realistic cinema and video game at the same time and fail miserably at the end, which leaves us with monstrosities that are not as good of a film as cinema films and not as good of a game as video games. Nowadays I’ve just been avoiding all these cinematic games, as I don’t really find them fun. Most of my games are indies and AAs. I did buy Dead Island 2 Ultimate Edition, and I having so much fun with it. After a days work I pop in the game, unwind, and kill some zombies it’s a great stress reliever for me.

Why are you implying Sekiro is one of these games with tons of cutscenes at 3:40? That game has maybe 6 cutscenes in its entire runtime. It's also strange that you think the earlier God of War games were not part of this trend. God of War was one of the first movie games, highly linear, cinematic, set-piece oriented with lots of cutscenes and quicktime events.

I'm so glad people are starting to say this, I've felt this hard for a while and felt like a bit of an outlier

I miss the old GoW. Playing them was so much fun, but since gow 2018, i feel like they marvelized the franchise at that point and it was not the same since then..

If you buy one game and can replay it infinitely then you'll only ever be a single 60-120 dollar sale. That's inherently a bad thing to an executive.

As a 33 yr old gamer, just give me a game like Spyro or Mario 64 and add more levels.
Everything doesn’t need to be Breath of The Wild.

03:05 - Developers want to bring you along for the story but the problem is that they aren't good scriptwriters more often than not. They have terrible stories that adhere to their DEI consultants and everything that happens in the game is meant to tick an inclusivity list. If a game's primary appeal is it's story and the story is poorly written, then there'll be no motivation to play it over and over again knowing that the story is bad.
