Thank you for doing Arcadia Creek. It has always been somewhat of a mystery to me. Back in the early '60's my mother and my brother and I attended St. Augustine Catholic church and we would walk down to the little park by the railroad tracks to wait for Dad to pick us up as he was not Catholic. I remember Mom warning us not to get too close to the creek because "a little girl drowned there" and that is why they paved the rest of the creek over. I don't know where she heard that because I've never been able to find anything about that. BUT there was a fatal train accident at that spot over a century ago and that is why that little park is there.
WMU Grad So I Know The Secret Handshake. Spent Four Years At WMU Paper Science And Chemistry Graduating In '89. A Great Mini Documentary I Really Appreciated. In My Years In Kalamazoo I Always Wondered About Arcadia Creek. That Disappearing Creek. Even Tried To Follow It A Bit Back In The Day. Now I Know. Finally! Except For The Undergound Part You Weren't Sure About. So That Will Continue To Taunt Me In My Dreams! I May Have To Get The City To Give Me Some Maps Including What You Missed On The Underground! But Great Job!
I wish I had known you were there. Would like to meet you guys. Born in Kalamazoo but lived most of my life in Three Rivers. I love your videos. You should check out the covered bridge in Centerville. They're redoing it right now but it's a beautiful place.
Kalamazoo’s really done a nice job daylighting Arcadia Creek it fits in well with the downtown. It’s crazy how much the city and especially downtown has changed over the past 10 years. Tired was a good way to describe a lot of the main public areas WMU campus, downtown & “the student ghetto”. There’s been a lot of investment in the campus and downtown while the Kalamazoo promise which provided tuition free education for HS grads at the community college level helped lift up the city as a whole.
Thank you so much. I know that creek well in my old hometown, and have always wanted to go spelunking there across from the Walgreens at the foot of West Main Hill. Thanks for doing the research and making this great video! So great! I live far away now, but know every little bend of that creek until it merges with the river. Thank you!
Super neat, especially having lived downstream of the Kalamazoo River and growing up in the region. Really interesting the history of the natural resource and domestication for use with prime movers as an energy source.
What an adventure. The graphics, photos, editing along with in depth research brought to the story makes this top notch professional. In the late 1970's I did business with a company on the east side of N Rose called Waber Tool and Engineering. It a was in a very old building, I believe the same one the reads "Factory" in the photo. The owner had some workers lift some very thick boards up from the floor to show me the creek running under the building. It was pretty cool and your video/stroy brings it full circle for me. Thanks for what you two do.
I have just recently discovered your channel and you have quickly become one of my favorite creator channels. I really like the way you weave historical education into your adventures. This is something that is missing in many of the hikers and travelers channels. I am now working my way from your beardless days forward. 😂
Like london hid their creeks and rivers, lol There is a supernatural series based on that idea and an RPG based on the book series You have given me ideas, Awesome video
Having grown up in Michigan I sure enjoy your adventures. One place you might check out is the (be good to your mother-in-law) swinging pedestrian bridge over the Black River in Croswel, MI. I haven't been there in a while, but I think it's still there. Looking forward to your next adventure.
On property the family owned there was a seasonal creek that was down to the bedrock. There was a small bridge on the state road that went over the creek. Back in the 80's I couldn't figure out why the creek was dry at the bridge after spring thaws. While walking upstream I found where the water went underground. After crossing under the bridge there was a small waterfall on the other side. The water was pouring out about half way down the falls. Natures way of changing the flow.
On a smaller scale, the Grand River was directed thru downtown Jackson, MI. It was covered for many years but then mostly uncovered. Unfortunately, I believe it was also the cause of some drownings.
This reminds me of the west fork of the portage creek. It is underground in the Kilgore road and Westnedge area.

Thanks for sharing this history.
Our pleasure!
Kayak time for this tunnel..😊
There are a couple of tight spots that a longer kayak gets hung up in. Keep it "white water" size.
My wife went to college in Kalamazoo in the 80s

I think that is the company! It was tool company. I just could couldn't find a second source to confirm it.
Learned new word: canalize, not to be confused with caramelize.

I thank the powers that be every. . . single. . . day! 😊
Strange that it doesn’t have a safety grate to catch things flowing into the abyss?
I guess they get clogged easily and are a big problem.
