that is some of the craziest cymbal/bell work i've seen. Especially when he's keeping the 4 beat on the snare with it during the fast sections. incredible!
Do yourself a favour and check out Residual Blight (to be fair the whole Apocalypticists album is fire, but especially that tune) from their side project Kriegsmachine. Also, Without Veil Nor Self by Entheogen. Not Mgła related in the slightest, but the drummer is absurd. Same dude drumming for Chaos Moon and Skáphe as well, but the guitars on Entheogen are psychedelic nightmare fuel. Chaos Moon is like if Emperor just continued from Nightside but also dabbled in LSD. And Skáphe is the songwriter's outlet for his bad acid trips. Entheogen is I think one of the finest bm albums of all time, certainly of this century so far.
I'm not a drummer so I can't really say how hard or not that is but I'm always impressed with how tight he keeps that 4 beat switching between left and right arm as he does while doing the cymbal/bell torrent. It's hypnotizing. @loki_Dokie Correct, he's a trained xylophonist and trainer jazz drummer :)
So a few years ago, laying in bed, scrolling youtube. I found this strange looking album cover for Mgla's Exercises In Futility. I was immediately absorbed into the atmosphere that this band creates. I had never ever been a fan of black metal, but this album not only changed that for me, but it actually became one of my favorite albums of all time. An absolute masterpiece.
This album make me really understand black metal what is the vibe ect ect at first i was listening to Cradle of filth, Dimmu borgir, Dark funeral that its since i discover Mgla now i listen over 150 black metal band
I had heard Black Metal music online only. The 1st Black Metal cd I ever spot was in the used section, it was NAGFLR's VITRA album, I've been hooked ever since.
@@Th3_Bl4ck_Sh33p well I'd say Cof and dimmu are more symphonic black, and I too kinda grew up with them and never listened to much straight black metal but this is just amazing, cheers bud
Just a little MGŁA FYI. Darkside was a Professional Xylophone player for a few years that I know of. That's where that insane rhythm of cymbals, toms, hi-hats and snares come into play.
I was at this particular concert. It was taken on Brutal Assault festival 2019 and I had to leave during this song. I turned back and people were just silently watching the stage. Nobody was moving, nobody was singing, people were just silently staring... Amazing ...
If you can believe it, the pronunciation of Mgla has just one syllable. It's close to the English word "muah", but use your throat to blend a hard "g" in with the initial "mw" sound. Also, Darkside's crazy cymbal work stems from the fact that he was originally a xylophonist!
I have no idea why people dislike this reaction video, I love this song and I enjoyed the video. If every reaction video would be just the same copy and paste praise that would mean that we live in a very boring world. Dropping a like on this one.
I heard this song for the first time being high af at a friend and the instrumental parts immediately caught me. There's something almost hypnotizing about the continieuous double bass and guitar. Had the pleasure of seeing them live last year and honestly one of the best shows ever. Sadly without the golden glitter drum kit
Greetings from Poland Nice reaction man 👌 Darkseid is a beast you should listen to whole exercises in futility album Even i know you say you are not a fan of black metal i think his drumming on this album is something you will appriciate
i think the only "bigger" set drummer i know that can pull these kinda things off and make it look easy is john longstreth but maybe not the cymbal creativeness

Mgla is epic for Years. I love em. 💯 Check out the Band "Uada". For me Uada is a little tribute to Mgla. 🤩
Sorry but if a drummer isn't blown away from that absolutely virtuoso drumming (regardless if you fucking like black metal or not. I don't like free jazz, but what the guys sometimes do with their instruments is crazy), I don't know what I am supposed to think about his musical understanding. I have never seen somebody playing the drums like a melodical and not a rhythmical instrument.
I'm one of those people who love it when it drones on forever... and as a guitarist, these types of songs are not so easy, the endurance trem picking is not so obvious, probably akin to double bass beats that never let up.

Classically trained xylophonist I think I read, so I'm sure that helps

6:40 i actually enjoy black metal for that reason, for creating hipnotic atmosphere

Absolutely, always listened to Filosofem while I was studying. I could work so focussed.
Mgla is my favorite black metal band. Exercises in futility album is a masterpiece. Darkside the drummer is considered the best in genre
The guy is a beast. Unbelievable. Great shit! \m/
Here come the FROST haters.
@@Toooomy_Boy frost ? They are ok. Mgla imo is better
@derekk8523 I agree.
The best? Hell no.

One the best pieces of drumming I've ever seen
Residual blight has to be darkside's best song

Great to see you reacting to this even if it isn’t your preferred genre. Dark side is insane.

Nick Barker is not on the skinny side, but his double pedals work is out of this universe
huge burzum influence which i like alot
Good reaction.
Good to see more adventurous black metal ones on yt.
No one ever talks about the snare
the song is a sound scape... it's about creating an atmosphere.. and the drummer ... yeah ..

Like Micheal J. Fox holding a windchime. The cymbal work and limb independence is excellent.
Long parts of black metal is for atmosphere
Wot a machine mate he's best datkside

You should check out some drum cam videos from Car Bomb. Elliot is an absolute genius. Their time signatures make Meshuggah look like Ben Folds Five.
I don't think he even feels it.
If you thing black metal drags on, don't listen to doom, drone og sludge, bro.
I can safely say I’ve never finished a doom metal song 😂😂😂
