I was 11 and in Ibiza for a family holiday when this was played..I begged my father if we could go watch it on the big screen in the hotel..Was a brilliant atmosphere and we won and then the place went into an uproar all the English decided to start a riot (typical) My father grabbed my hand and we ducked out of there dodging flying bottles and glasses..Aye what a night full of emotions both happy and sad what with what happened to Jock Stein..R.I.P Big Man 🙏🙏🙏
RIP Jock Stein. Such a shame, the only thing I suppose is that he passed away doing something he loved. It would have been interesting to see how they would have got on in Mexico in 86 if he'd lived and carried on managing Scotland??
It was the opening match defeat in Iceland that killed Wales - they actually had the best record in the games between the three big teams in the group Spain, Scotland and Wales.
@@paulwilliams8389 I was excited to see this game given its importance and the fact it was a midweek televised game, which was rare in those days I think. Although at least we got to watch our national teams on TV. I recall being disappointed that Dalgleish and Souness weren't fit and ultimately with Scotland's performance, even though we got the result. Awful football, Wales should have won. And of course a terrible end to the game with Stein.
Big Jim didn't have a bang in the eye, he lost a contact lens during the first half and didn't have a replacement! Jock apparently wasn't very happy!!!
I remember in the Scotland v Uruguay game in Mexico with Scotland desperately chasing a goal in the final minute the ball hit a Scots player on the arm in exactly the same way and the ref awarded a free kick to Uruguay - queue a host of moaning Scottish players. The irony was delicious. 😀
There was a rumour that it could be played at the National Stadium, which held 38,000 though Mike England and the entire Wales team wanted the game played at the Racecourse in Wrexham where Wales had a tremendous recent record and had recently thrashed Spain 3-0 but as usual the WFA ignored them.
The Englander's commentator's were for sure wanting the Welsh to win. Must have upset them that the nation the Germanic Saxon's conquered, didn't beat the nation that the Morris dancers failed to conquer. 🤪
Oh dear.salty jock .when did you last beat England 25 years ago..since then oh dear..nil nil win ..wales have at least got to knock out stage as for the skirt wearing men mmm.
I watched this game. They sang that because the Welsh and Scots supporters were displaying how to create an amazing atmosphere without attacking the other set of supporters like the English were known for. They were laughing at England. Talk about something going way over your head.
@@Kiltskills Exactly. Welsh and Scottish supporters hadn't been acting like lunatics for years causing their all their club sides to be banned from all European competitions.
The tragic night that we lost Big Jock Stein
Some of the only football we got on television until the first week of January 1986 as well.
Davie cooper what a player
My dad, aged 23 at the time, was at this game; I was born in 1987 🏴
Watched this as a 21 year old in the Tudor Arms in Paisley… so sad about Big Jock… what a night though….
A very harsh penalty for 1985 , but a cracking armosphere ,. RiP Mr Stein
what a game , still biting my fingernails all these years later. Love the adverts at halftime and the lads behind the glass at halftime / full-time

Ferguson was a terrible international manager. The squad he picked was lousy. Still, my sister's his equine vet and says he's very nice.
Ferguson ruined it in Mexico , after all the hard work BIG JOCK done REST IN PEACE 🙏
Excellent! Thanks for the upload - I'd completely forgotten about the half-time 'contact-lens-gate' with Jim Leighton.
Legendery stain last day on the earth
Excellent entertainment back in 1985. Poor Jock Stein. Wales amazing players but couldn't qualify.

How come both teams were wearing white shorts and socks? I thought that wasn't allowed?

Jimmy greaves comment 😅😅 still hit his arm . Penalty in anyone's book 😮

Did they originally plan to play this at the much larger Cardiff Arms Park/National Stadium to accommodate the huge number of Scots
No. Always Ninian in those days 💪

Why are the crowd asking if England were watching? Talk about living rent free in someone’s head.

What bias comments from Greaves and Rosental. Best team won.
Er, it was a draw. And Wales won at Hampden in the previous fixture. And Scotland totally flopped in the finals nine months later. As always.
