I was standing on the kop the day Terry Mac scored the goal against spurs , that goal made it 7 nil , it was the first time we saw ardiles and villa from Argentina
They were defeated by fixture congestion. That winter was harsh, games rearranged and they had about a 16 man squad at most. They were dead on their feet by the end of the season. Sports science was non existent. Steak meals, fish a d chips and a night on the lash was standard, along with pitches that resembled pachendale and brutal tackling, defenders "allowed one" and sliding and tackles from behind permitted plus provided you got the ball you wouldn't get called out for a foul.
Even as a Villa fan, I have to say goal E Len Cantello just pips Terry McDermott. Also remembering what a great player Laurie Cunningham was back then.
watching Brian Moore and all these great footballers should make all of us born in late 1950s and early 1960s very happy that we have seen the best there was to see in football and life in general as well. We had childhoods where we were told to be home before dark. We became teenagers with the best cars and the greatest era of rock in 1960s and 70s. We should all remember the great life we have been privy to before we start to complain about what we see today in this 'woke', 'pc' world. We were the lucky generation............
I still remember that McDermott goal. Front to back in a flash. I believe it was the final goal in Liverpool's 7-0 drubbing of Spurs. My Dad always loved Curry's goal though. The bend on the ball was back when the footballs were still hand stitched leather. they weren't made light like the ball of todays PL. Bending the ball like that was some trick in those days. Great trip down memory lane.
It was ! Pelting down the wing, barely looked up, left foot, ball bounced slightly awkwardly as he hit at full stride straight onto the head of TMcD. Deffo one of my al ltime favourite goals from an era when I truly loved football. Don't watch footie at all now.
as a baggie it is great to see Cyril and Lawrie again.nice backheal from Bob Taylor great goals hard choice for me in 2023 boing boing tonight v Hull city great post. thanks 🙏👍
Thousands locked out that day. Albion scores 1 of 4 conceded at Anfield by Liverpool all season. We went to Anfield on top , but fixture congestion did us.
Those West Brom boys ....wow! The McDermott goal....1 touch football...devastating ! So many great goals ... Cantello and Regis ... sublime. How good was Cunningham??
Remember this season very well. Such great football and teams back then. Remember Liverpool being unstoppable that season. West Brom I think finished third that season. They were led by Big Ron Atkinson. The best West Brom team I have ever seen.
God I miss terraces, surely they can reintroduce them and make them safe? Loved these days of football, Huge crowds standing, European football on free to air channels, division 1 games on the big match Sunday afternoon and let's not forget Saint and Greavsy. Yes I am old but I really do miss those days.
Everyone used to think Craig Johnson was just a running machine up and down Liverpool's flank, but his vision and first touch pass for the McDermott's goal was sublime - in the Dalgleish style.
As as Albion fan yes Cantello great goal, great game but depending how you like your football Terry Mac,s header in that brilliant L.pool side was what it is all about ...you can keep your tip e tappy give me 3 passes and in the net any day ..Heighway did not even break stride. Superb
This weekend I saw THREE Quadruple rolls by "injured" players and endless other challenges that prompted stoppages or the trainer, usually, it was the winning team who "miraculously" had these injuries and yet in The 1960's-1980;s hardly any injuries on those pitches with the heavy balls and tough defenders!
Obviously, there were some injuries but when you only had one sub there were few. Look at NEXT weeks Premiership matches and see how many times players make a real meal out of any challenge. It's, literally, most challenges, most of the time with Wolves, who I admire, being the worst. How come also in the last 30 minutes when one team is winning that THEY have 90% of the "injuries?"..
I was at the game the day Liam Brady scored that goal I was behind the goal and what the camera did not pick up was the ball was swerving a lot before it went into the back of the net ⚽️⭐️
That Liverpool goal was a spectacular team goal. Definitely my favourite. But all round an excellent list to choose from! I adored Tony Currie and what stands out is the quality of the football on some less that quality surfaces. Mind you, those surfaces had improved from the 1960s.
When I was a lad I couldn't understand why Match of the Day didn't include Terry McDermott's goal in their Goal of the Season shortlist that season. Surely, I reasoned, Jimmy Hill must have seen it on The Big Match so all he had to do was ask ITV for the tape.....
this is how football should be. but we have lost that era sadly. the premiership ruined that with foreign players and managers. also the money has ruined it to.
Liverpool man from NZ loved those 2 WBA legends Cunningham & Regis & they should of won the Goal but the Terry Mac goal was unbelievable 1 touch 100yards 3 passes & of course the result the Famous 7-0 hiding sorry Spurs Fans
Everything now is premier league. It is as if Division one never existed.Wonderful players in the 70s,great stadia, though olde, phenomenal fans, wonderful commentary,no holds barred, shit pitches,no pathetic "simulation"..CHANGE EH?
Those two WBA goals are magic
Laurie Cunningham was such a class player.
Shame he didn't play for United longer - class act :)
Youngsters who think that football only commenced thirty one years ago should watch this.
Brian Moore ..quality players. The Commentary ..Brilliant
English football at ITS BEST
HAPPY DAYS
Very nostalgic to see English soccer golden goals with a brilliant host.
I was standing on the kop the day Terry Mac scored the goal against spurs , that goal made it 7 nil , it was the first time we saw ardiles and villa from Argentina
I was at that game, the kop started cheering spurs and booing Liverpool, hahaha
Possibly Liverpool's best ever goal.⚽
My GOODNESS the West Brom team goals are just beautiful.
WBA we’re a serious force back then.
How they didn’t win the league or the FA cup is beyond me.
Steak, fish and chips, and a night or the lash produced beautiful football!
Even as a Villa fan, I have to say goal E Len Cantello just pips Terry McDermott. Also remembering what a great player Laurie Cunningham was back then.
Some brilliant goals there. I remember that United vs WBA game as a young boy. I'm a United fan but what a striker Cyrille Regis was. RIP
The back heal to Cantello without looking and the finish was the best goal for me
Tony Curry for individual brilliance, but for a team Goal it was Terry McDermotts goal all day long.
McDermott goal wow. That cross field ball by Johnson, first time cross and bullet header. The perfect goal
Cracking goal 👊
The goal by Len Cantello is still one of the greatest goals ever
I think it was a contender for best match of the 70's
I was there.
That goal has forever stuck in my memory.
Well maybe off 1979 anyway…
watching Brian Moore and all these great footballers should make all of us born in late 1950s and early 1960s very happy that we have seen the best there was to see in football and life in general as well. We had childhoods where we were told to be home before dark. We became teenagers with the best cars and the greatest era of rock in 1960s and 70s. We should all remember the great life we have been privy to before we start to complain about what we see today in this 'woke', 'pc' world. We were the lucky generation............
What a great show the Big Match was on a Sunday afternoon, with Brian Moore
I still remember that McDermott goal. Front to back in a flash. I believe it was the final goal in Liverpool's 7-0 drubbing of Spurs. My Dad always loved Curry's goal though. The bend on the ball was back when the footballs were still hand stitched leather. they weren't made light like the ball of todays PL. Bending the ball like that was some trick in those days. Great trip down memory lane.
That Steve Heighway first touch cross though...
Ive always said the Steve Heighway cross is the greatest in the history of football.
Also the best West Brom team ever, RIP Laurie and Cyrille
It was ! Pelting down the wing, barely looked up, left foot, ball bounced slightly awkwardly as he hit at full stride straight onto the head of TMcD. Deffo one of my al ltime favourite goals from an era when I truly loved football. Don't watch footie at all now.
It was a great cross no doubt, best ever is stretching it a bit mate
as a baggie it is great to see Cyril and Lawrie again.nice backheal from Bob Taylor great goals hard choice for me in 2023 boing boing tonight v Hull city great post. thanks 🙏👍
I saw that West Brom side at Anfield that season. Reds won 2v1 but the Baggies were a great team. That game at old trafford stands out, amazing goals.
Thousands locked out that day. Albion scores 1 of 4 conceded at Anfield by Liverpool all season. We went to Anfield on top , but fixture congestion did us.
A great albion side
Two West Brom goals fabulous.
When football was actually exciting. No preening prima donnas diving about 😊
Agree... you can watch The Big Match Revisited on Channel 4 on Saturday Mornings...
There was and always will be a few prima donnas though
Football had always prima donna, at least since the times of Meazza.
Agreed upon.
Exactly 👍👍👍
Those West Brom boys ....wow! The McDermott goal....1 touch football...devastating ! So many great goals ... Cantello and Regis ... sublime. How good was Cunningham??
West Brom Fans who were at the Man Utd game still rate it as the best ever win away from home.
Remember this season very well. Such great football and teams back then. Remember Liverpool being unstoppable that season.
West Brom I think finished third that season. They were led by Big Ron Atkinson. The best West Brom team I have ever seen.
I was at the Liverpool v Spurs game. Terry Mac's goal best of the lot.
Even as an EFC fan, that was , for me, the best of the lot. Outstanding.
Terry Mac every day of the week. However Regis was one of my favourite players at the time. An absolute unit
Brian moore still my favourite commentator.......football was so inventive in those days.
It was real and honest
Has a Chelsea fan, as much as I loathe to say the Liverpool goal was sheer class, as were that team of the 70s.
That Liverpool goal is still one of my favourites all these years later...and i'm a Toffee !
That was my all-time favourite Liverpool strip and an absolute MACHINE of a side. Flawless.
WBA had a great side back in the day some talent there.
Still baffles me how they didn't win anything. Superb side.
Pop Robson scored some fantastic goals for Newcastle, Sunderland and the Hammers. Never afraid to try the impossible.
Used to volley with Top Spin I recall
A Golden era at the Baggies with top class players , Cunnigham is my favourite player of all time , Regis is also a legend 🤍💙✌️💯
There all great goals but that Liverpool goal is one of the greatest team goals ever scored.,
Agreed, and if they did it in the 2023-24 season we would still be saying that it was brilliant.
Back in the days when you could celebrate without worrying about VAR ..
Regis, great team goal.
Tony Currie what a player unreal
Whoah that West Brom team, they were something else. Should've won more. But the Liverpool dynasty stood in the way of that !!
They've had some great players up the baggies and played some Great football over the years
I record all of The Big Match shows from 1975-1983, as they are regularly shown on either Itv4 or BT Sport. Great nostalgia.
McDermotts goal was a team effort and I clearly remember the game, thank you for the memory
Yeh, mostly the Tottenham team doing everything wrong….
Tony Currie for me. And I am a saints fan!
Only looks half decent because the camera angle shows the curl…
Cantello for me…
The good old days ....all brilliant goals
When my Albion were fantastic. Seems a long time ago now.
Craig Johnston didn't join Liverpool until 1981
What great memories, I was 14 at the time , those were days !
Nice on Cyril..nice one son..nice one Cyril...let's ave anavaa one....R.I.P big GUY...🇯🇲🇬🇧💯❤️
It makes you realise that we were living in that era
As as Albion fan yes Cantello great goal, great game but depending how you like your football Terry Mac,s header in that brilliant L.pool side was what it is all about ...you can keep your tip e tappy give me 3 passes and in the net any day ..Heighway did not even break stride. Superb
Cantello is my uncle 😅
That match at old trafford started me as a baggy fan.
Great WBA side, thinking back on all the great midfielders of that era. Curry, Cooke, Bell and later Hoodle.
What, no Souness?
Goo on cyrille, oh what a goal
B. Great counter attack. Brilliant video mate. Thanx 4 sharing. 👊✌️
I wonder if there was a cut off date for golden goals as the wonder goal by Frank Worthinton a week earlier was not in the compilation!
Being a west ham fan I should say pop Robson's was the best - but Tony Curry's was pure class.
Takes me back to when football was about football not money , no mercenaries back then just normal guys playing footy for the love of the game
@@Isleofskye and the atrocious pitches they played on , proper men
Football is so much better now. That lot of drinkers and smokers wouldn't last 5 minutes
@@Isleofskye they had loads of injuries
Obviously, there were some injuries but when you only had one sub there were few.
Look at NEXT weeks Premiership matches and see how many times players make a real meal out of any challenge. It's, literally, most challenges, most of the time with Wolves, who I admire, being the worst.
How come also in the last 30 minutes when one team is winning that THEY have 90% of the "injuries?"..
All are great goals!! Considering the state of some of the pitches I just saw, all goals masterpieces! ❤
I was at the game the day Liam Brady scored that goal I was behind the goal and what the camera did not pick up was the ball was swerving a lot before it went into the back of the net ⚽️⭐️
Still the greatest Liverpool goal ever .
mmmmmmmmmmm. yes and no. lol
There was one scored by Ray Kennedy away at Bristol City around this time that was even better in my opinion!
wow, the great Cyril Regis...ty
Golden Goal '79 - Where every goal on the list was scored in 78. Tony Currie for me.
Golden Goal 78-79 for me Terry McDermott for Liverpool against Tottenham and Cyrillie Regis for West Brom at Manchester United brilliant goal.
That Liverpool goal was a spectacular team goal. Definitely my favourite. But all round an excellent list to choose from! I adored Tony Currie and what stands out is the quality of the football on some less that quality surfaces. Mind you, those surfaces had improved from the 1960s.
Cantello's goal and the other WBA goal showed great team effort
Fantastic. Football was so much better then.
On bumpy pitches too.
Bryan Robson looked younger 15 years later playing in the Utd team. Hair regrew due to his special powers.
Yeh, almost looked like a different man
" Tony Currie milks the applause of the crowd"😀😀
Baggies v utd never tire of it
The phome on the table had me smiling!
Oooohhhh what a goal!!!
Gerald Sinstadt
C was a fantastic goal, but D had the spectacular passing leading up to rattling the net.
Unbelievable goals
I remember that Man U - West Brom match. It ended 3-5 at Old Trafford.
When I was a lad I couldn't understand why Match of the Day didn't include Terry McDermott's goal in their Goal of the Season shortlist that season. Surely, I reasoned, Jimmy Hill must have seen it on The Big Match so all he had to do was ask ITV for the tape.....
And all of that great football was played on pitches that look woefully rough compared with today.
That first time cross by Steve Heighway!
Great goals . But that liverpol goal was out of this world!
Definitely A. Liam Brady.
Those were the days, you knew the players, they didn’t fall down after every minor touch and you could pronounce their names!
Yeah...Shaw..Bale..Kane.. dead hard to pronounce...
A couple of iconic Kick off matches on there with Gerald Sinstadt's commentary. I do hope McDermott won. One of the best goals seen on tv.
Love the phone on Brian’s deck
What gets me is how open the play was back then - my vote would have gone for Pop Robson - just a natural instinctive finish
All super goals!
Liam Brady number 1
Was the worst goal of the 6 though…
scoring superb goals without the stupid celebrations......... what a wonderful time that was.
Tony Currie walked on water
All marvellous goals but i would vote Tony Currie.
If it wasn’t given to McDermott, there was something seriously wrong.
this is how football should be. but we have lost that era sadly. the premiership ruined that with foreign players and managers. also the money has ruined it to.
“OHHH, WHAT A GOALLL!”
13 seconds before Terry Mc delivered the coup de grâce with his head he was leaning on his own teams post.
Is that Martin Tyler commentating the Tony Currie goal? If it is, the man must be immortal.
Yes. He's still at it! Lord knows how old he is now.
Born September 1945
He took over from Keith Macklin commentating on Leeds games for Yorkshire TV
Tony Currie was top draw
Better times.
Liverpool man from NZ loved those 2 WBA legends Cunningham & Regis & they should of won the Goal but the Terry Mac goal was unbelievable 1 touch 100yards 3 passes & of course the result the Famous 7-0 hiding sorry Spurs Fans
No replays, back in the 70s when you had to actually concentrate, and engage your short-term memory.
Great memories
Everything now is premier league. It is as if Division one never existed.Wonderful players in the 70s,great stadia, though olde, phenomenal fans, wonderful commentary,no holds barred, shit pitches,no pathetic "simulation"..CHANGE EH?
Tony Currie
We had a telephone exactly like that when I was growing up
