  • I finally get an RC tank on the show!
I have wanted an RC Tamiya tank for some time now and today is that day! I have wanted a Tiger 1 or a King Tiger 1/16th scale as I love the look of them. I was lucky enough to come across this vintage example online last week that was close by so I jumped in the car and headed out to collect it. This example is a vintage Tamiya kit: 56004 1981 version. Yes, it really is 40 years old and in fantastic shape.

I had this tank, if I recall I got it in 2002ish, don't remember if barrel went up and down but I remember that transmission with the clutches and One motor Being a Nightmare!
The set screws kept coming loose and gears kept stripping. Dang I miss that Tank!😂

Wow! Nice find, Gav. I bought a 40 year old toy last week, which, like your Tiger, is also fully built. She's 1:1 scale, powered by a petrol-fed V8. However she's not Tamiya and was built in a factory in Crewe... by Rolls Royce Motor Cars. I've gone and sold my soul for a Silver Spirit! Well, I don't smoke and don't drink a lot so I let the car do that (not smoke, just drink... Oh the joys of getting into a classic car once more and learning its foibles and idiosyncracies - currently fallen foul of the dreaded odometer drive gear failure - got one on order). I may not be buying any new RC vehicles.... for some time! :) Sometimes one has to listen to one's heart instead of one's head!

Thanks for sharing Gavin. This is the evidence Tamiya models never get old.
Th 4.8 batery plug is fine. It's kind of a compromise to fit in all receivers and for th old BEC systems. I runned some sailing bats with it and never got issues with it.
The only two things I would change on this tank is adding the sevo for the flash and putting a 550 Injora motor in it. Starting with 35T. If it's too slow then going down to 29 or 27 T.

I bought my KT in '84 for £160, the original speed controller was horrendous, it cut in at half speed approx 30 mph scale speed so no slow speed running, I'm surprised they didn't have a race series they were stupidly fast. I managed to squeeze in a homemade 2.5:1 reduction gearbox ( made from an old electric screwdriver and a Kyosho le mans 480 motor). Worked great with a much more realistic speed. Also fitted brakes to the transmission as on high grip carpet the thing wouldn't turn. I couldn't afford a 4 channel so never had the flash working, I also powered the turret with a 2.4v take off from the main 5 cell drive battery. Rebuilt in lockdown without the pre gearbox reduction but a crawler motor instead and managed to get the strobe servo controlled (Id lost the kit servo arm but managed to make a new one). Kept the 2.4v takeoff as it allows a nice slow turret turn. Also kept the brakes.

    nice vintage tamiya tank,
Be much easier to start again honestly.
I used to buy tamiya prices are ridiculous, but buy tiagen/torro tanks they have most of the opinions already fitted, metal tracks wheels lower hulls turrets then change the Mfu to IBU2U units/elmod speakers smoke units these are much Better than standard fitments and are adjustable and still cheaper fully upgraded than a standard tamiya tank...

  • @axelusul
    @axelusul 2 роки тому +1

You could find Heng Long parts of you want to make a recoil, could alter metal tracks with drive wheel and idler.
Depends if it has to be Tamiya parts. Lots of independent hobbyists making parts. Check out thingyverse etc for printed parts. Plus new HL 7.0 has combat pack, IR battle, sound, 6mm BB gun. Lights proportional speed etc, smoke and FPV Camera option for you phone.

Even though it's an old design, it's still pretty damn impressive! A few years ago I managed to get hold of a Tamiya Leopard 2 for £300. It was missing a few external parts but was fully working, and it was awesome. I sold it some time later for £300, I still miss it. I'd love to get the new Centurion, but it's waaaaaaaay out of my price range....

Gavin, yes it is exciting and I have always wanted one too but haven't due to the cost. I just got a 56007 King Tiger new in box for $175, then realized no gears or control boxes. Some sites still offer right gear box but left is very rare. Finally found both and yes each has its own 380 motor. Rather than the expensive control module I just got two hobby wing esc and two batteries so even longer run times.
Also it looked like at 9:58 when the tank went back up on the grass one of the treads was separating. Is it broken or just slipped apart? I have extra in California, but if needed hopefully someone closer might have extra too. Enjoy!

I would leave it as it is. This model is a time-capsule of RC-technology of basically the 70's. Carefully restore and preserve it.
Tamiya put a lot of love to emulate the steering mechanically with clutches in pretty much the same way as the original tank would have operated using a single motor. Of course a modern DMD-tank-unit runs and turns a lot smoother, but then this particular model would have lost it's soul.

I'd try and and restore it and then maybe get a tank made by Taigen as they tend to be better specced and a bit more driveable than the tamiyas, only downside is you can't build them but you can get quite a few bits to upgrade them further and add more detail if you wish. Or you could sell your soul, house and family to get an Armortek one lol
