      Hello I am Jack Gildroy and I went to Viet Nam in Dec.of 1968. I was in A Troop 2nd Platoon, 1st Squadron/1st Armored Calvary, Americal Divsion 1 Corps Viet Nam. For the first two months I drove an ACAV. M-113-A1 (Armored Calvary Assault Vehicle) I TOOK TURNS DRIVING THE OFFICAL "Mine Detector'...The lead vehicle... YOU HIT IT OR YOU DON'T!!!
      If you don't hit it you don't have any thing to worry about... We had 7 ACAVS including a 81mm Mortar Track and 1 Patton M-48 A1 tank. The tanks couldn't go with us,(our 13 ton
      ACAV FullyTracked "ALUMINUM Armored" Vehicles) through the wet rice paddies during the rainy season because the would just sink into the rice paddies. When we got the " 26 TON"
      SheridanTanks (one per platoon) we thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. The Sheridan was light enough it could go with us in the rainy seasons and it could swim with us when we had to cross rivers that were too deep for the M-48s to cross. We learned how to take care and it gave us the fire power to take care of us. It's Aluminum Armor was enough for
      dealing with ( The VC and The NVA) it was a major boost for us. We had to adapt our methods for fighting in this Hot Damp climate for all of our hi- tech weapons. The new M-16 rifle
      had some issues until we learned how to take care of it in this climate too. I was driving and I collected an anti-tank round from "Charlie...Air-Express (RPG-7) and because we had great support I survived. The Sheridan Tank was part of that.

    Andy, nice job, I always like seeing your skills. One note, as a former crewmember on several M-551 Sheridans, the piece of "glass" on the front of the hull is actually a part of the floatations surfboard. You may want to paint the backside of it the same color as the remainder of the vehicle. The surfboard was plywood and was often splintered quite a bit, and along the sides and back edges, should be black for the covers over the floatations screen, that was black rubber. You can catch all that when weathering it.
    One othe note, we almost never fired the main gun off the side, the recoil was brutal. Over the front it actually could lift the front roadwheells! The shillelagh missile did not do this.
    Looking forward to getting and building one of my own to look like my last full up Sheridan circa 1978 in the 11th ACR in the Fulda Gap germany

    In the 80s I came across the tamiya 1/16:scale rc tanks at my local hobby shop and being a teenager could never afford it. If I can recall correctly it was around 500 at that time. Today I ordered my favourite ww2 Tamiya tank the KT. With rc unit and battle system and some metal parts it was double in price. Thanks Andy for reminding me of forgotten dreams.

    I saw these for real, in Germany, during the 70's. When the main gun fired, they would rock backwards, and, the front roadwheel would actually lift up! If Tamiya does make an M60A2, it would be a must have for me, I was a gunner on one of those...

    • @wbradburn8871
      @wbradburn8871 5 років тому +3

      Actually came up off of the first two roadwheels when firing the conventional ammo...like being on a wild bull ride. The whole vehicle weighed about as much as the turret of an M60A1. Many novice gunners wound up with black eyes because they did not weld their foreheads to the headrest above the optics before pulling the trigger.
      At Ft. Knox, we had to drop for 10 every time anyone in the class referred to it as a tank. It was an AR/AAV (Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle). They were also amphibious.
      The clear part in the glacis of the model should have a hull colored piece underneath. It was a window in the swim board that was raised for amphibious operation, and allowed the driver to see (sort of) where he was going.
      Also originally designed to be air droppable. The story was that they tried it two or three times. Even with the multiple parachutes and retro-rocket equipped pallets, the impact from hitting the ground would break equipment loose in the turret and render the vehicle inoperative.
      Thanks for the great video of the build, Andy! Looks like Tamiya did some wonderful engineering and you did some serious modeling.

      That's just down to user control... The turret could be rotated slower and the throttle applied in smaller increments. Would just take time for a user to get used to doing everything so it looks to scale.

    I built the Tamiya Tiger I and was thoroughly impressed with the barrel recoil action, simulated hull jerk and overall track travel action. I'm not so sure on what I've seen so far with this M551. It seems a bit less realistic and more toy-like.

    • @Custerd1
      @Custerd1 5 років тому

      Rapscallion Yep, I assume there’s a trade off - details for durability. When I was in Japan in the nineties, I was marveling at some of the portable music player technology that was years ahead of what was available in the states. A store clerk told me that the controls were “too delicate” for the US market - never did see any of that stuff over here. I guess we Americans were not careful enough with the equipment and would break things too easily? Then we’d complain. LOL. Same with their models. I built a bunch of Tamiya “remote control” tanks back in the day - they had a control box attached to the back of the tank with four wires about 3 feet long - two wires for each motor/gearbox. The details were really minimized on these working tanks compared to the static models. The control box parts weren’t nearly as robust as they should have been - I still have an old Matilda remote control tank from the 70s that I never got around to building; I think I’m just going to skip the motors and leave it a static model. The remote control parts on all my old models never held up.

      Yep recoil not working. Chassis movement is to soft. When the real ones popped a round off it would lift up the first two road wheels. Got to find some grease guns to stash on there also. Then it would be about perfect. Just missing some of the commanders armour but that could be scratch built. Nice kit

    Thank you Andy, great video. Have visited your shop in Glendale Arizona on a several occasions, and have bought kits, paint, tools etc. from you. Very interesting to see that Tamiya has simplified their 1/16 RC tank kits, for the better. Built Tamiya's 1/16 German Leopard tank a few years ago, and oh my goodness was that complicated. It took me weeks! Kit had 23 different types of screws, probably 150 in total. Seemed like needless complexity. Once complete, the Leopard is an amazing RC model, but gosh was it work.

      @@PieAndChips Agreed. On the Tamiya Tiger1, turning the tank or transmitter first gives two different start up sound options, crank start, or battery start. Why would a manufacturer offer a option if there was a possible runaway issue? Runaways were an issue with AM/FM modulated radios getting false signals. Even with the saturation of the 2.4 band, never had an issue with 2.4ghz, can leave my trucks and tanks on all day with their radios off, no problem.

    Tamiya should include a realistic mode to switch over to from this hot rod mode. Maybe an option within the DMD.

      you just turn down your trim on your radio so full stick forward isnt as fast as it normally is. saves a bunch of money on both sides and it's reversible

    its twitching forward when you shoot, seems backwards I believe.

      Might be jammed up against the box I suppose though it's probably programmable also or wired up the wrong way round (sacrilege to say it though). :)

    That's great, now can you do a Hooben T55? Talk about a cash cow for a hobby headquarters alright

    This brings back memories... My Dad had a kit like this a long time ago, but his was mostly metal parts instead of plastic, even the treads were these little bits of square metal you had to solder together. The inside was a mess of servos and a battery (lead acid if I remember), and he had to make a servo for the turret since the kit didn't have it. And of course, no speaker system, heh.

    noticed no main gun barrel recoil and the hull recoil on the tank is backwards???

    What about the crewman figure? Won't you assemble & paint him also?

    MSRP is close to $1400 without radio gear. Seen them online around $750, but after you buy the RC equipment I assume it will be $1000+ new. I think that I'll just look for now. It is nice though.

      $1500 for a full function complete Semi truck from Tamiya, $750 for this tank is a steal.
