Really liked "The Empty Man", "Deadstream" was alot of fun, but "Haunt" is the one that blew me away, really one of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile.
I loved it as well, but considering the ending I think describing it as a "good, fun Halloween watch" like the video does dramatically undersells how dark this movie gets. Some people might be in for a rude awakening.
So true. This is an excellent movie that didn't get its due. It has perfect tone, atmosphere, pacing, and tensity. How anyone can say this is throw away is baffling.
So glad to see that you included “Burnt Offerings” in your 20 overlooked horror movie gems. I love this film, Anthony James steals the show as the chauffeur.
Behind the Mask is probably the #1 movie I've recommended/shown people who want a fun horror comedy they've never heard of. Loved it since I rented it on a whim in 2007.
When you said Nic Cage and Shudder I KNEW you were gonna mention Mandy. Surprised it didn't make this list... Incredible movie! Totally rewatchable too!
I second Mandy. It's not for everyone since the first half is a real slow burn, focusing more on atmosphere than moving the plot forward. Anyone who doesn't mind that will be treated to one of the most metal movies ever.
I watched May for the first time this year and it immediately become one of my favourite films of all time. It felt perfectly made for me. I've watched over 70 horror films since September 1st, in an attempt to binge as many as possible for autumn. I got to see a few films that are lesser known, at least to people who aren't avid horror fans! My favourites this season have included History of the Occult, May, The Medium, The Loved Ones, Birth/Rebirth, The Harbinger, The Vigil, Under the Shadow, What Keeps You Alive. Some rewatches have been The Borderlands (Also known as Final Prayer) and Inside.
I saw Burnt Offerings on cable in the 80s as a teen and it remains my top freakout movie to this day - and I both saw Amityville Horror and read the book as a kid.
You are absolutely correct about The Nightmare. Knowing that this is a documentary and these are real events makes it so much more scarier, The movie did mess with my sleeping foor some time. Very creepy
YES! Burnt Offerings is a great film! It doesn't get mentioned enough. I've seen quite a few on this list and they're all quite good. Black Sheep is a riot! It's just a really fun, ridiculous (but not too ridiculous) flick.
Empty Man is so amazing, probably my favorite horror movie... I also really love The Guest, it unfortunately got overshadowed by It Follows so a lot of people don't know missed out on it
So happy to see Come True and The Guest on this list, as well as other beloved titles, but also quite the reminder for many I've always wanted to check out and never got around to. Thanks for the reminders, killer list as always 🙌🏻
If you're still looking for suggestions, I can offer some: Ready or Not, Mayhem, Warm Bodies, Totally Killer, The Menu, Better Watch Out, The Babysitter (and the sequel, too), Violent Night, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Vivarium, Synchronic and Overlord. Most of these aren't hidden gems, but maybe you'll find them useful anyway.
I think I've seen 15 of these movies including "Burnt Offerings" which is terrifying. "Skeleton Key" with Idris Elba and I think Hillary Swank is the updated Louisiana Bayou version, equally scary.
Burnt Offerings, which was filmed locally way back when, has long been a favorite. In fact, I watched it again just a couple of months ago. It really holds up as a creepfest. I have been to the mansion where it was filmed. They used to decorate for Christmas and allow tours. It is beautiful. Skeleton Key is a VERY underrated horror film. It showed me that Kate Hudson can really act! Great cast, unusual story, very creepy in a swampy Louisiana kind of way.
Good to see The Empty Man getting a recommendation. The short movie AM2100 by the same director is what made The Empty Man catch my attention. Really excellent Lovecraftian story.
Come True is awesome, gave me Donnie Darko & David Lynch vibes! Definitely a hidden gem on Hulu, I loved the ending, still gives me chills! Must watch! And Haunt ending: Insane!
Dude! I watched The Guest after the first time you suggested it, and it really cemented you as a reviewer I could count on, with tastes not unlike my own. I don't know how you got so good at this, but I'm sure glad you are.
ssshyt i saw the Guest few years ago & that F*n Dan Stevens, f*n HOOOOT asf in this flick🔥🔥, NO wonder that teenage B** wants to bang him , anyone wanna do ..i would f*n push him on bed TEAR his pants & shirt su** & ride the ssshyt of him all dayy till he cant f*n get up for daysss, before he goes to jail F*** ya, got him down ..the flick was really eye candy & was disturbing asf Loved it alot , well done 👍
I saw the guy who plays Fried Barry in a crime show reenactment on ID. Also, you should add that you also have the option to watch it with Joe Bob Briggs.
That was a great FLICK CONNECTION Darren. Black Sheep is a blast, fun and scary, rolled into one. Blood Red Sky is indeed a gem. Your presentation on each film was first class. Many thanks for sharing with us 👍👍👍
"Come True" is one hell of a movie with one hell of a fckin twist in the end. MAJOR SPOILER BELOW- DO NOT READ PAST THIS IF YOU DONT WANT THE MOVIE SPOILED! - - - - - - She undergoes this sleep study, and during the study she keeps seeing and feeling these really weird things, and her dreams wind up morphing into reality more and more. Then she learns that the man that is doing the sleep study is some man that she used to know I guess or he had a whole bunch of personal info on her and had a thing for her, but yet she chose to come do the sleep study on her own. Well, in the end it turns out that shes actually been in a coma for a long time and they're trying some sort of new technology to get her to wake-up. So in the end they're actually able to communicate a message to her through this fax machine I think, and it says something like "please wake up, you're in a coma, we've been using a new technology to get through to you. Please wake up". It scares the fuck out of me because I've always wondered how we would know we're in a coma or if we're severely mentally ill. You see these people that are able to construct these false realities around themselves where the nurses at the mental hospital are like family members or store workers and shit, and in their head its real. What if you're experiencing something just like that right now?
Blood Red Sky is a Great Movie!!!!!! But Wow! I hated The Guest! However, I might have bailed before the end. I know I watched it right after watching The Gift which I really liked - it's pretty F'd up by the end!
The Empty Man was a real surprise for me… slow but fascinating, and ultimately very scary. I thoroughly enjoyed it and NO you cannot skip the first 15 minutes… they are important. Oh, and Colour Out of Space is not only good Lovecraft, it’s one of Nic Cage’s better recent films. (Not in the horror genre, but if you haven’t seen Pig with Nicholas Cage, you are missing an outstanding film, and the best thing Cage has done in years. But that’s just my opinion.)
@@scottkirby8204unfortunately YT keeps re moving MY reply letting you know that that's not Darren, it's fa ke.... Isn't YT grand. Leave up spam from a fa ke acct, but ta kes out mine helping you out.
I just came across a hidden gem that no one talks about called The Assent (2019) on Tubi. It's a possession film but it crosses over into psychological horror.
I'm not a huge horror fan, but there are some I enjoy, like the first "Insidious" film. Though "Color out of Space" is both incredible AND peak Nic Cage!
Color Out of Space is an amazing film. And it’s so awesome to see Cage seeming to make a comeback to good films that are worth watching. Not just films that exist to showcase Cage being a meme of himself for 90 minutes. Haunted Asylum is also really fun. Kind of like a Korean spin on Grave Encounters.
Talk to Me was the best recent horror movie I’ve seen. Come True I loved as a surreal horror before bed. Starry Eyes was also a nice enjoyable surprise, and I watch Burnt Offerings at least once a year just because.
Im subscribed but somehow the algorithm still hid this from me for a few days. Anyway--another EXCELLENT list! Summer if '84 is a blast and I watch The Guest every October. Gets me in the "fall" mood more than any other movie. Appreciate you, DVD!
As a horror fan i and general film lover (especially of horror, caction, and comedy) before i watch this i'll list my own top 20 seldom mentioned horrors which i love. I will say most are 80s slashers. 20 Devil's Diary (2007) 19 The Lamp (or The Outing) 1987 18 The Incubus (1982) 17 Inseminoid (1981) 16 Blood Rage (1987) 15 Christmas Evil (1980) 14 Mutator (1989) 13 The Dorm That Dripped Blood (1982) 12 To All A Good Night (1980) 11 Bells (1982) 10 Shocker (1989) 9 Blood Link (1982) 8 976-EVIL (1988) 7 Skateway Massacre (sometimes called Death Rink) (2019) 6 Final Exam (1981) 5 Bloody Birthday (1981) 4 Pieces (1984) 3 Mikey (1992) 2 Offerings (1989) 1 Visiting Hours (1982)
@FlickConnection I just watched Talk To Me, thanks for the recommendation, I just rented it and I think as far as genuinely unsettling modern horror movies, I think this is one of the very few, I’ve actually been unsettled by. Props to A24, for producing a horror movie that actually got under my skin, I believe this is the first horror movie I’ve seen that’s been produced by A24, I may have to check out some of their other productions specifically, Midsommar and Hereditary which, I’ve constantly heard nothing but praise for.
Was *MASSIVELY* Impressed With Haunt,. 👏👏👏 Looking Forward to Thanksgiving - though.. ...the Exact Precise Release Date and Storyline is Causing Some Second Thoughts,. . ... .. Initiating Repetition Mode but I'll also give a Horror Gem Recommendation Shout-out to Enemy, Let Me In, Let the Right One In, Revenge, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Survivalist, and A Lonely Place To Die... . 👏👏🎨👏👏👏
Hell House LLC Grave Encounters Event Horizon Behind the Mask The Jupiter Mission (from 2001: A Space Odyssey) Apologies 18 Untitled 7 nights of darkness The Shining All my Halloween faves!
If you have those sleep paralysis nightmares, The Nightmare (2015) is pretty fucking scary. The re-enactments, that is. RE: May - Angela Bettis is a horror QUEEN, and we need to start recognizing her as so. Just write endless horror films for her to star in and pay her 90% of the budget for each one.
Awesome I was hoping you would recommend some on Shudder since I’m a member of and can use some help picking the movies. Join because of Creepshow love the original and wanted to see where they we’re taking it.
So happy to see May here. While I find it more sad than scary (I really identify with how lonely she is) I have loved and recommended it since it was released.
What’s the movie about a guy that takes his buddy and girlfriend into a closed down insane asylum while dropping acid, but ends up in a psych ward because they got attacked by a demon, then gets taken back there by a psychologist and some students, ends up confronting the demon, and he wakes up with an axe in his hands yelling Rachel over and over again??? That was a pretty good flick
Vin's mom doesn't know who his father is, but I'm pretty sure he's Black. Tarantino grew up with his mom and her Black and Latina hot ass roommates. His mom was partial to Black Men, so he ended up seeing a lot of Blacksloitation movies when they were trying to win him over, but he totally loved it.
so you know the name of a movie where a man in a small town was accused of murder and the son and mother at the end of the movie does an autopsy on the man and discover he was an space alien
I've seen my share of top lists by other youtubers, but this one really struck gold for me, magnificent! Oh and by the way Darren I just wanted to ask you (concidering your last name) are you from Dutch ancestry? If so greetings from Holland, if not then still greetings from Holland! 😉
It's a bit of a spoiler to say a movie is "found footage". I can't blame you for it but it does imply nobody comes back alive, which I'd rather not know until the end. But it's your production, and I'm probably nit picking.
2 fun Vampire themed movies nobody talks about are Boys From County Hell Let The Wrong One In Vampire movies are a bit played out but these 2 have a bit of freshness to them. They're both irish films, a lot of good movies have been coming out of UK, Europe and Ireland lately, especially horror.

Eye Candy Dominic Purcell (Blade 3 and the alligator movie is in this movie)is in "Blood Red Sky" its a great movie of a mothers love protecting her Child,✌✌✌
"Fried Barry" is a different type of watch...
You got some of my faves, especially top 2, you should try Otis.
Blood Red Sky is one of those movies where you wind up rooting for the vampire in a big way.
This is a great list. Seen most of them cuz horror is my jam. Some I havent heard of so its a list worthy of the time spent on this clip
I've actually seen a number of these.......May, Fried Barry, Color Out Of Space, Last Witch Hunter, Behind The Mask. Pretty great list.
Really liked "The Empty Man", "Deadstream" was alot of fun, but "Haunt" is the one that blew me away, really one of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile.
Haunt is great!
Haunt was really good. Trying to pick another off his list, no way it’ll be as good tho.
The Empty Man definitely deserves a top spot. The beginning is a must watch as it informs the ending.
Bro the ending was ass, the rest of the movie was awesome but the ending made no damn sense
"Summer of 84" is one of the most 80's - type films that was not filmed in the 80's. LOVED it!
I loved it as well, but considering the ending I think describing it as a "good, fun Halloween watch" like the video does dramatically undersells how dark this movie gets. Some people might be in for a rude awakening.
The studios considered it a throwaway but intelligent horror fans call The Empty Man a masterpiece.
Empty man was hella overhyped to me, also not actually scary at all to me.
I consider myself intelligent.......but I found The Empty Man unbearable. Look online, im not alone
So true. This is an excellent movie that didn't get its due.
It has perfect tone, atmosphere, pacing, and tensity.
How anyone can say this is throw away is baffling.
I really like the first part of it, the little story in the story, but the rest I wasn't a fan
It has some interesting aspects, but it’s not something I would purposely watch again. Seemed like a slog after a while. Just kinda meh overall.
So glad to see that you included “Burnt Offerings” in your 20 overlooked horror movie gems. I love this film, Anthony James steals the show as the chauffeur.
Was surprised to learn younger people at my work had not heard of the 80s classic American Werewolf in London

I always liked Near Dark, which was available on Shudder but I'm not sure if it still is. It stars Adrian Pasdar, Lance Henriksen, and Bill Paxton.
One of my all-time favs!
The Guest is definitely worth a rental. Excellent movie.

Awesome! Another Burnt Offerings fan! That movie doesn't get nearly enough love.

I can personally vouch for Deadstream! I enjoyed every bit of it. I seen it last year when it first dropped

Pig is on my short list of things to watch. I ran across it the other day and it looks fantastic!
@@mermaid_at_heart213 It’s one of the calmest performances I’ve seen by Cage in years. He’s really quite moving in it.
@DarrenVanDam.. Hi Darren. If you’re replying to me, I don’t know what HMU means. Sorry.
@@scottkirby8204unfortunately YT keeps re moving MY reply letting you know that that's not Darren, it's fa ke.... Isn't YT grand. Leave up spam from a fa ke acct, but ta kes out mine helping you out.
Fried Barry was wild 🎯
I just came across a hidden gem that no one talks about called The Assent (2019) on Tubi. It's a possession film but it crosses over into psychological horror.
Yes, The Guest deserves the #1 spot! LOVE that movie. Talk to Me is a must watch as well!
My favorites off this list : Deadstream( Hilarious), Burnt Offerings (Creepy & Freaky),The Empty Man (Brilliant) and The Guest (Badass Awesomeness)!!!
Dunno if you're aware of it yet but looks up Longlegs. Nick Cage is in it and it looks creepy as hell
Black Sheep is such a great movie lol I was actually really impressed when I saw it back when it came out.
Thanks for the List and Video 😀
Talk to Me was the best recent horror movie I’ve seen. Come True I loved as a surreal horror before bed. Starry Eyes was also a nice enjoyable surprise, and I watch Burnt Offerings at least once a year just because.
Im subscribed but somehow the algorithm still hid this from me for a few days. Anyway--another EXCELLENT list! Summer if '84 is a blast and I watch The Guest every October. Gets me in the "fall" mood more than any other movie. Appreciate you, DVD!
Great list! And yes, The Empty Man is absolutely terrific - what a brilliant, bizarre ride!
Dude. I love behind the mask so much. I watch it every fall. Gotta do that cardio!
Blood Red Sky was surprizingly fire, man!
As a horror fan i and general film lover (especially of horror, caction, and comedy) before i watch this i'll list my own top 20 seldom mentioned horrors which i love. I will say most are 80s slashers.

Awesome List. The Empty Man is AWESOME!
Burnt Offerings is one of my favorites thanks for including it on the list
Thank you for this video. Nice pics!!!
"When Evil Lurks" Horror movie from Argentina will be available on Shudder on October 27th
Blood Red Sky was awesome. Honestly I was surprised that a mix of Nonstop and 30 Days of Night actually worked let alone as well as it did.
👏👏👏 Looking Forward to Thanksgiving - though.. ...the Exact Precise Release Date and Storyline is Causing Some Second Thoughts,.
. ... ..
Initiating Repetition Mode but I'll also give a Horror Gem Recommendation Shout-out to Enemy, Let Me In, Let the Right One In, Revenge, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Survivalist, and A Lonely Place To Die... . 👏👏🎨👏👏👏
The Guest is one of my favorites! I like your picks, now I DO trust you^^
Hell House LLC
Grave Encounters
Event Horizon
Behind the Mask
The Jupiter Mission (from 2001: A Space Odyssey)
Apologies 18
Untitled
7 nights of darkness
The Shining
All my Halloween faves!
I like how you advertise the meal prep service. Looks good 👍
You want overlooked Nick Cage? "Willy's Wonderland". On Tubi and Plex. Odd note: he never speaks one word in this movie.
Darren this list is FIRE! TY! Wondering what you think about the new When Evil Lurks.
I highly recommend Talk to Me. Just rented it the other night and we loved it.
Thanks! Saved the video for the list!
I don't know how many times I've watch The Last Witch Hunter. I love it.
I hated ‘talk to me’, because of hype behind it. It was supposed to be scary, it wasn’t. It’s ok at best.
You got me with that Black Sheep fakeout 😂😂😂
Gonijiam is one of my all time favorite!! It’s insane
Boo?
Vin's mom doesn't know who his father is, but I'm pretty sure he's Black.
Tarantino grew up with his mom and her Black and Latina hot ass roommates. His mom was partial to Black Men, so he ended up seeing a lot of Blacksloitation movies when they were trying to win him over, but he totally loved it.
THIS was the list I was waiting for! Cheers, Darren!
Definitely gonna give Haunt a try.
so you know the name of a movie where a man in a small town was accused of murder and the son and mother at the end of the movie does an autopsy on the man and discover he was an space alien
I’ll type it again this year: Housebound on Tubi is a fun horror/comedy that I watch every year
Right on, love that one too
And for anyone looking for a great indie/ foreign horror movie make sure you see ‘Lake Mungo’! It is one of my all time favorites!
Come True is so great....and The Guest is one of my all time favorite movies of all time. They both have the same kind of 80s feel!
i watched haunt off your recommendation and i was VERY surprised, it really was a hidden gem
I have seen all of these except Fried Barry. This is a great list. Definitely checking out Fried Barry tonight.
Thank you for reccing The Empty Man to me! It was exactly my jam and I definitely wouldn’t’ve given it a shot if not for you.
I will see The Guest again I guess ...
But first The Empty Man needs to be checked out !
Anyone in for a Freddy Krueger tomorrow? Friday? The 13th?
I've seen my share of top lists by other youtubers, but this one really struck gold for me, magnificent! Oh and by the way Darren I just wanted to ask you (concidering your last name) are you from Dutch ancestry? If so greetings from Holland, if not then still greetings from Holland! 😉
The name is a little Dutch but I am not
Love the Farley cameo
Black Sheep is one of my favorite horror comedies. If the Raimis were Kiwis...
It's a bit of a spoiler to say a movie is "found footage". I can't blame you for it but it does imply nobody comes back alive, which I'd rather not know until the end. But it's your production, and I'm probably nit picking.
But but the cameraman always lives! 🥹😢
Because of my ignorance to "found footage", your comment actually spoiled it for me.
Thanks for another great list.
Thank you for the recommendations. I just watched The Guest, what a great film.
Really liked color out of space and the guest! Need to watch behind the mask, been sleeping on that one forever!
2 fun Vampire themed movies nobody talks about are
Boys From County Hell
Let The Wrong One In
Vampire movies are a bit played out but these 2 have a bit of freshness to them. They're both irish films, a lot of good movies have been coming out of UK, Europe and Ireland lately, especially horror.
