Per popular demand, here's a tour of my "new" work truck, a 2001 Dodge Ram ST. It used to belong to my late father in law. My wife and I decided to hold onto it and put it to good use. In this video, I'll first take care of some maintenance items and show just how clean this truck is overall! I'll also give a full tour, showing all the ins and outs, while taking it on a thorough test drive. I love basic pickups! This thing is so practical!

A truck that's actually a "truck" hope it keeps working for you for years.
Oh, I'm sure it will, back then they used to build trucks like tanks lol
Unfortunately, he sold it along with the 2015 Sierra 3500 HD, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler, and the 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis
الرسائل
Unfortunately after about a year, he sold that truck
That is pretty epic. I can't believe 2001 was 19 years ago! Time flies by fast

Chrysler column shifts of this era were all really smooth that I remember. My parents had a 98 caravan and it was silky smooth to shift and I remember watching one of Kyle's reviews a long time ago on the AWD town and country and he also commented on the smoothness of the shifter.
Huh? It's an automatic. No one shifts those.
We had an 04 ram. It was the same way. Super smooth
The 90's/00's Chrysler column shifters were the best. GM vehicles always had super notchy ones (except some Cadillac and Buick sedans) while Ford had really loose ones. Sad you can't really get them anymore except in a fleet vehicle, which they still make because they're better.
Very nice! I’m sorry for the loss of Wesley
Is not a Chevy or a Ford but I like it, it has personality and a "in ur face" look. Good one Kyle!
As a Mopar man, you cannot believe just how much I love seeing a Ram in your possession, hope to see some cool stuff done with this, not too crazy, but still some nice upgrades.
Owned a 97 SS/T blk/tan. Loaded, one of the prettiest trucks I’ve ever seen.
I think this things needs a 6.4 Hemi shoe-horned into it! A single cab, short bed, 2 wheel drive is the perfect platform for a muscle truck!
Hold on partner this is just a work truck not some rapper mobile show truck
Stay away from new hemis. Had one 2017 ram with a hemi in it, camshaft and lifters went out at 58000 miles.
That's a really muscular sounding V6!
Column shifters are my favorite
Awesome video Kyle. My grandfather‘s first truck that I remember him having since I was born was a 1998 ram 1500 SLT but his had a backseat as well as a V8. He now has a 2020 Toyota tundra TRD pro and he absolutely loves it. Keep the green videos coming Kyle
The 318 and the 360 one of the best dodge engines ever made!
Masterpiece ever until now 2023. Great
I’ve had 3 of these trucks and they all did that going into overdrive
That was my favorite generation Dodge Ram. Chrysler really knocked it out of the park in 1994 when they designed and released that body style. I still remember that generation Dodge Ram being famous in Twister and Walker, Texas Ranger. The 1990s was a fun decade to grow up in.
My friend had a manual ram just like that one in high school and no matter what hell he put that through it wouldn't die. Love it
Man the quote 'they just don't make them like they used to anymore' applies here. This truck is in immaculate shape and no rust. It's hard to find these in really good shape. Glad you and Christal decided to keep it!
Great to see you're keeping your father-in-law's legacy alive by keeping and maintaining his truck.
Totally reminds me of my uncles 1st gen Tacoma v6 that I’m using rn. Runs decent, shocks are worn, base trim and it’s 20 years old. Keep it up man
Glad you did a video on this. These are my favorite generation. I remember seeing them new on the lot. Instant like. I've owned a few 2nd gen diesel trucks but I've always wanted the work model or an ST V6 Reg cab long box. Just a good work truck. I have a 2017 Tradesman 1500 currently I bought new. Probably the best quality Ram trucks have had. However something about that older generation I love.
Take care Kyle!
Put in an 8.0 V10 and do a second gen srt10 tribute. Maybe use a factory Ram SST style bodykit and stuff. Always wanted to do this.
LOL!!! I instantly love this saying..."you barely have enough power to get out of your own way"
Amazing RAM ! Love Dodge from Italy! You are great
Excellent, i wish regular cab trucks still sold.
It is like my white '02 beat up,beautiful, reg cab, charcoal interior, and high miles. Mine is a magnum V8 that was rebuilt for $5k and we inherited it but from an old friend and also a long bed SLT and it takes $200 a week in gas and it also sounds a little close to yours but it just has that gas burning muscle truck sound and it was redone so now you cant hot wire it
My brother is a master mechanic and has been doing automatic transmissions since he was 17 and we just recently changed the transmission fluid in a1999 f 150 with no issues
I actually prefer the seats in the work trucks over the SLT’s they’re so comfortable compared to them
This is the best thing for this old truck, with you as the new owner, you will refurbish this truck to excellent condition and bring it back to life! You are probably one of the best detailers in the country, so I can't wait to see the end results when you're done.
TLC is all she needs. Thanks for the review! Be well my friend!
Patrick Bolmeyer love is alway what everyone needs
I own my 2nd Ram, this one is a 99 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD 5.2 lifted. They look awesome, sound awesome and drive awesome. The cracked dashes are a huge problem, to see this one with no broken dash is amazing.
For a V6, this really sounds like the bigger SUVs and pickup trucks with V8 engines with potent sound. The engine and even the exhaust sounded like that.
mines like this but inburgundy and it has a v8 with over 200,000 miles in it and it is great , it was my grandpas and i just got it today
These trucks are always completely rotted out in my area. I’m surprised seeing it so solid and also seeing just how good that drivers seat looks
The dash too. It ain't bad
Ok I stand corrected lol I commented before he reached the dash part lol
I had a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport and I loved it! Needed work so I couldn't do anything with it
Sorry for your loss . That truck looks well loved I my self have a Indy ram had it almost 17 years. The second gen rams are awesome looking trucks. I fell in love with them the moment I saw one take good care of her.
If that was my truck I would do a 5.9 swap. I had a 95 regular cab short bed with the 5.9 automatic and 3:54 gears. It was quick and it towed and hauled with ease.
There is a gap in every person's life that only an old basic work truck can fill! Not even a Dodge fan to be honest, but this thing has character and I love it man!
I have a friend whose dad used to have a red dodge ram 1500 with the suicide doors from this generation, except that it's not in this condition. He ended up getting rid of it and bought a 2019 ram 1500 with the full size back doors.
Bring back the old school personal vehicles start ups
This singlehandedly makes me glad I bought my 98 to restore, I love that truck to death. Shocks are the most worthwhile repair one can do for a vehicle, I just put a set on my 2000 Explorer after ONLY 308K miles, and man what a difference. I'd put them off because of rust but PB is your friend.
Sounds to me like she needs:
Better air intake
New spark plugs (and check for black residue on old ones)
Transmission flush
New headlights
And since you replaced the shocks, it means that it "rode on the springs" for a really long time, so check out the rest of the suspension components and bearings/seals.
Only three of those need to be done; the headlights can be cleaned with some Armor All headlight restoring agent.
You’re a cool guy
That's a great video of this old truck thank you for sharing it to us viewer's
All my life I’ve been around 2nd gen dodges. I love them. I own a 99 2500 that’s been a big project of mine. My dad has bought a 96 1500 5.2 2wd with low miles and it drove like a car. So smooth
I AGREE!!!!! Column shifters are my favorite!!!
The truck's in excellent shape! Take good care of it, Kyle!
This is when dodges we’re actually good
Kinda....
New ones are absolute trash
There transmissions were not
Dodge has never made a good truck or a real truck at that.
Oi... I love my 2020 RAM..
“It’s...I don’t now I’m weird I guess.” 😂 Classic moment. I know what you mean though.
Dad has a 1997 v6 with a Manuel, awesome truck good on gas and been really reliable
Nothing more beautiful than a 2nd Gen Ram
Here in NY, when I do a simple shock swap, I get the gas axe ready, a 3 lb Tonya Harding 🔨 ready, and lastly basic tools
beautiful truck, I would swap the big old 8L V10. That huge motor in a truck that small would haul bud! Would love to see a future video of you doing that! V10's with low miles are cheap.
Looks like a great truck Kyle! I recently picked up a 2003 Ram 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins 6 speed manual. Man I love my truck!
Completely agree with you on the column shifter. I drove gm vehicles all the time and I never got the gear right the first time and it always felt harsh and weird when shifting. When I got a 4th gen ram it easily became the best column shifter I ever used.
I had a 1994 version of this same truck, the only difference was it was red, long bed with the 5 speed manual. Cool truck!
Yes that old saying is true about the transmission changing the fluid at how miles if it's never been changed before I wouldn't mess with it unless they gave you an issue.
That other issue sounds like the torque converter and that's why it jerks when it goes into overdrive
Not mileage. Condition. Always check trans fluid condition before changing it.
@@SkylineFTW97 I've had several and seen it . A person changes the tran fluid at high miles and it's never been touched and then has transmission problems after it .
@@KnuckleHeadGarage27 Yeah, if it's never been touched. But in most cases, it's a car somebody bought used and has no idea whether or not it's been changed. That's why the best course is to check first. If your car has a dipstick for the trans, there's no excuse to not check it.
@@SkylineFTW97 yeah lol . I just bought a vehicle that had this happened lol she has 255,000 miles and they decided to change it
@@KnuckleHeadGarage27 I bought a Subaru Outback with 266k on it. The trans fluid is still serviceable. Dipstick was seized in place, but it did come out to check it.
I still have my 1995 Dodge Ram Laramie SLT. I see yours is suffering from the typical Chrysler paint issues… But it’s fantastic to see one without any rust on it!
I had an 96 Laramie. I had over 250.000 but was in still great shape. Just like that. Mine was a hunter green.
Wow thats a very unique Ram! Simple and bare bones inside, an SLT looking trim outside but with a V6 very interesting might i also add that truck is so clean for its age
I literally just got the exact same truck, my little project truck now.
Nice truck I have an 02 Dakota with the 3.9 dodge built some good trucks back then
Do a touch screen head unit like the Jimmy and fix the paint for Wesley! love the interior but she sounds like she was well taken care of just needs some regular maintenance work on her and a few small things.
I can agree with you on the column shifter, even my 98 GMC is notchy like yours.
keep it going and working hard in his Memory 🤙🏻
I do remember having a 95' dodge ram 1500 like that shape but it had a back seat you had to move the front seats, it needed a water pump but it went to the junkyard and i hope someone has it taking care of it
My Dad has a 1999 5.2L V8 and she has well over 200K miles on her. She still runs great and as you said there always seems to be something wrong with her.
Mighty good truck you got 👍
That truck is a keeper. Having to find a truck in that prestige condition, is hard to find now in days.
Nice rig, I wish trucks were cheaper around my area.
Please put a V8 on it!
It's have a v8
@@brodysmith5976 v6
@@-Barracuda-426 putting in a v6 is a downgrade, he may do a hellcat in the truck if he wants a series of this truck for his father in law
No he was saying the truck already has a V6 in it
I always loved those generation of Dodge Trucks.
My dad had an 02 a lot like this one. I miss it a lot :(
Nice truck Kyle westly is gonna love it
Just bought a 98 with 139k 360ci with 321 gears in the back (5lug) 2wd 500$ got in a slight fender bender. Stripped down put in new radiator support she is good as new. Runs like a top. I’m starting to learn I’m very lucky
Also hood and driver side fender replaced and painted home owner special
Best bang for your buck upgrades, Basset DOT rims and a glasspack muffler.
I would do a drain and refill on the transmission. That should be fine, but a flush yes I agree don’t do that because that pushes any friction material shavings into the small passages which ultimately leads to transmission failure. I believe those have transmission filters as well which you should also change as well
I would like it if you did old dealership start ups again!
I agree the transmission is crazy acting and smooth selecting lol
Ive had 3 of these trucks a 5.2 318 and 2 24v cummins including a parts truck and ive always loved them so much i still have my 01 24v and its pretty clean but not as clean as yours and its my project im planning on restoring the truck front to back and modify it on the way im hoping it will be making about 700 to the rear tires id really like to see you restore your truck kyle i love your videos and want to see this truck in its prime
Check the transmission dipstick. If the fluid is the same color brown as the oil, then you can change it. If it's black or smells burnt, then you can't. That means the clutch packs are damaged and you need either a rebuild or a replacement.
Reminds me of my 98 I had. But it was the 4wd version with the 318 v8 with the 5 speed manual. Really loved that truck but got into financial problems an had to sell it. 😔.. Hope to find another one someday that isn't beat an rusted out.
Also Kyle will mention the transmission paired to the v6 hardly ever goes out. I wouldn’t change it either cause I did a filter and fluid change on my 99 5.9 dodge and after which would slip constantly and had to junk it. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! Good luck!
Holding on to it now that’s love for a Ram
Hey Kyle, how’s it going. I’ve been watching your videos for a long time since I was either 9 1/2 -10 years old. I would have subscribe at that time, however I was too young for a UA-cam account. Now I’m a subscriber and I really enjoy the old school Saabkyle04 videos, especially the repo vehicles, at your dad’s dealership. I know you’ve had a lot going on with the house and the project cars, so if you need a break, I was preferring that you didn’t do anything to the truck and drive an old vehicle that is back to it’s older glory. I just like my older vehicles with all the stock features and original components. That’s what I personally prefer, but whatever you want to do with the truck is your choice. I would like to see an older vehicle back into its old glory. But with the possibility of those specific configurations not being sold any more maybe you should find something that is closest to the original or makes it feel original. Anyway since you have project cars already and if you don’t have a stock vehicle and if you wanna take a break from all the fancy “schmancy” tech installed into older cars.
I love that truck I have a 2002 Dodge ram regular cab SLT
Get the transmission upgrade kit with new solenoids and overdrive spring.. easy to do with trans in, gives you the opportunity to tighten the bands. Bet your legs overdrive spring is broken. I’ll try and post link...
Can’t go wrong with a RAM!
I honestly like that color on that truck
Hi Kyle my name is Matthew i’ve been watching you since I was three years old my first video was from 2010 when I saw your first video I like your videos a lot and also you made me like Chris fix to I want to both of you guys every single day and when Chris fix. Did your 240sx decided to do that to my dad‘s car in and he was really impressed him buy the paintIt was a 2005 Toyota sequoia original paint now it looks brand new and I clean the tires and the wheels and I’m gonna wax in every single weekend you made my life change and the car then I’m gonna get for my first Car is a 2005 Civic Ex or a. 2011 Civic Si or 2000 Civic Si you made my life change and when I saw your very first video I was very excited to put a sound system in my car so I can make pieces fly everywhere 😂 thank you guys for changing my life now I’m a go back to watching videos
Awesome truck there Kyle. Will get the job done
Love those wheels and tires!
Nice Ol' Truck. I hope you'll get the chance to do some additional older vehicles.
That is a super clean 2 gen.awesome truck!
That reminds me of the government truck my dad used to drive when I was little, only that one was all blue with no silver under tone and didn't have a cargo light (in other words, the third brake light was solid red). It was a great truck like all these 2nd gen Dodges are, the only thing I hate about them is their interior's (specifically the dashboard) disintegrate easily
There can't be many 2nd gen Rams left in the US in that sort of condition...
After 19 years and 190,000 miles it might well be worth considering putting on a set of new springs all round. After that time and mileage you've got to be thinking they're going to be getting pretty tired, especially at the back where it's been carrying loads for most of its' life. It would be worth putting a new set on when you're doing the suspension overhaul as that can make a huge difference to the ride quality of an older vehicle...
I would love to see an update on the Denali!!
I want more on 2001 dodge ram brakes front end ball joints front end work
It’s a nice looking truck for the year
I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT. It’s a regular cab long bed 4wd with the 318 v8 engine.I average about 13-16 miles per gallon.
Good video buddy, but of you permitt to say, never use the tool to fix the oil filter. The oil filter has to tight by band and not by tools, cause the next time you need to remove It, you can have troubles. Anyway thanks for the video.
