Love it! '... I can make anything, so long as it fits in a log'. I carve smaller pieces. I don't use chainsaws but I know what you mean about loving that freedom that an office can't give. I might try lathe work next. I enjoy your videos immensely. You're creative and honest. Thank you.
Always happy to find another female wood carver! I'm hoping to do more chainsaw carving, but I don't have a place to be messy just now. Patience is hard.

The worst thing about being a chainsaw artist is the wood you have to work with and the location you live in. All I have to work with is hard woods here in Kentucky and it has to be completely dry before you work it because it will crack and come back to bite you in the butt . I’m always trying to out do myself and I’ve had some that was hard to part with , but that’s just part of it.

spoken like a true brit, i live in france and can`t find work so i turned to wood as well, wood turning mostly, then pyrography a bit of small power carving and i have just invested in some chainsaw carving equipment to try that, i have plenty of years in tree felling so i am competent with a chainsaw but not yet with carving with one, any tips or advice?

Room to store everything,the noise (live in the city) and transporting large stock,are the biggest impediments I'm finding.
Modern battery saws work well, should help with the noise and you can make small things. Most of my work is 40 - 100cm tall.

hi . i am new to wood sculpting . i had been watching your amazing skills on display on youtube . i have a question . i read everywhere about safety tips for chainsaw use , and they all say not to use the tip of saw , yet i noticed all the sculptors who use the chainsaw use the tip of the chainsaw without any kickback !!!!!!!!. they also use the tip for plunge cuts . please advise . ( i am considering starting with a mini chainsaw for blocking the wood sculpture )
Hi Abdo,
Kickback is a sudden backward and upwards motion of the saw. It is possible to use the nose of the bar and control kickback but that comes with training and experience! You'll notice when I use the nose of the bar I start the cut with the saw pointing down and brace it against my body. Carvers also use lower powered saws with smaller "low kickback" chains which helps reduce the effect. If possible I'd highly recommend taking a professional training course if you've not used a saw before, but my top tip would be to keep your head out of the line of fire at all times. Look down the left-hand side of the bar and chain not over the top of it. Hope that makes sense?

Jeff Logue Hi Jeff, I'd highly recommended a good basic chainsaw course if you've not done one already. Learning how to brace the saw against my body and use the whole bar including the kickback zone safely massively increased my confidence and allowed me to freely create with the chainsaws. 😊

hey Maytree! i'm a wood carver myself and i might have something that might help you get a little more realistic look. this comment is extremely late and i'm sure u have got better since this video. Try using either a Dremel or Rotozip for finishing details. it help get fine lines and smooth out those hard to reach place to make your lines are little more sharp and clean. but that's just me lol
