If it's going to crack, it will crack whatever from my experience. I try not to worry too much about it, it's the nature of the material. I recommend people keep the sculptures in a shady spot if possible, that helps stop them drying out too quickly and dramatically reduces any splitting.
No. I only use sustainable timber. Most of it comes from tree surgery waist. Trees that have unfortunately gotten too big are dying or unsafe to leave in people's gardens. This was a conifer that had to be taken down as it was in danger of falling over after storm damage.
