The thing about the original FF6 is that the story is told at an appropriate space. You’re always arriving somewhere new, or setting out again. The downtown is extremely minimal. The game also doesn’t micromanage you. And, of course, the story simply makes sense rather than being a pretentious metanarrative of itself 😅
It's funny, b/c VII had so much extra stuff that you didn't need to do, and Rebirth frankly did a perfect job of recapturing that exact feeling for me. I can honestly say I haven't had a non MMO gaming experience as good as Rebirth since at least FFX, and maybe the OG VII.
Your criticisms of the music make no sense to me. You would really prefer hearing “Let the battles begin” for the 187th time as opposed to new battle themes for each location and scenario?
Just wanted to stop by to say while I personally don’t find open world games (particularly this Ubisoft style open worlds) super fun I respectfully disagree with your take on the open word here. The points of interest are just a modern representation of grinding in the og. Instead of running in circles on the world map and waiting on random encounters, rebirth has provided context for this now. They just did it the same way the did everything else, looking outside of the set rpg genre and to a different style of game. I also disagree that the og blended exploration with its story progression any better than this game. That point didn’t seem super well thought out, outside of subjective opinions. Objectively rebirth gives plenty of incentive to explore side content. If story pacing was an issue for you it sounds like you found yourself engaging with it plenty yourself, so to say rebirth doesn’t at least merge it’s two sides at least as well as the og seems a little disingenuous.
Yeah, given how much they tried in Rebirth it is pretty incredible how good the majority of it is. Those criticisms are spot on, but really pretty minor adjustments they could make for the final installment (except for the multiverse shenanigans story stuff). I'm really excited to see how they bring it all together with the final installment. Playing through the original ps1 game I think they can stick pretty closely to the events of disc 2 & 3 with less padding, and have an epic scope of being able to travel the whole world map in the Highwind with lots of optional end game stuff to tackle. Really looking forward to fighting the weapons and some cool quests to get ultimate weapons and limit breaks. And hopefully way less god damn Chadley...
I get what you mean and been thinking about that game a lot, too. But what bothered me the most is how this game felt like a vacation trip while wanting to talk a kinda serious story. That amount of side activity and discovery just made me think this game should have been a spin off that is just fun and games. And not a chadley-driven-sometimes-fun-sometimes-serious-tower-climbing-collectathon-cardbattle-waifusniffer-adventure. I had the exact thought when I was done in cosmo canyon. The "oh god no, there is so much" before I can continue...90 FECKING HOURS IN! Was fun to watch btw (the sound sometimes was a bit loud when you stopped talking).
I still havent finished the game either. I stopped after cosmo canyon. Enjoyed my time up to that point but i simply grew exhausted as well. I played for 80 something hours but i kinda messed up for myself by trying to be a completionist. I’ll definitely come back around to finish at some point but i am a little sad i didnt finish on my first attempt
@@dezmundogaming8780 I finished it by now, was kinda a struggle, though. Kinda had to force myself. But yeah, I tried completing everything as well. With these kinda games that's a death sentence.
From what I understand, the Japanese language doesn't even have a word for "subtlety." When I was at university, I asked my Japanese professor if there was an equivalent Japanese word for it, and the closest he could get was「奥ゆかしさ」 "okuyukashisa," which doesn't so much mean "subtlety" as it means: "asceticism." Perhaps the subtlety and restraint which made the original game so great was only incidental, given the limited technology of the time.
great review, I agree with you, especially about Chadley! they bloated the game, but cut out the fun of finding and exploring the Forgotten Capital, the most gorgeous setting they had. in the original the pacing of finding the Sleeping Forest and Lunar Harp was perfect. in Rebirth you follow a ghost there immediately. Listen to the Cry of the Planet is also my fav FF track, but they mixed it till its barely recognizable/ audible. and the AI combat is even worse than in previous titles, like why is this worse than FF12? where are gambits? and why introduce a multiverse but not give us impactful choices to alter the story. that is what as a fan I always wanted & a huge missed opportunity. I can't in good conscience buy the third game now because Rebirth is such a massive disappointment.
Great video I hard agree on Chadley! I had to watch a lot of content on the game once I was finished Philip Hartshorn pointed out a lot of blink and you miss it moments. You actually do get a shot of the water burial scene after Cloud tells Aerith "I got this" and gently lays her down.. quick pan to the rest of the party watching from a distance as he does this as whispers are swirling about..Sephiroth then saying "You'll never see the truth with such clouded eyes" like THAT'S the burial! I think my jaw damn near hit the floor when I heard that. Dream Pheonix pointed out the sector 6(not to be confused with 7...) plate is back at the end of Rebirth as Hojo and Rufus fly over Midgar which is a symptom of the Reunion. This kind of story telling in hindsight is like WHOA holy WHAT!!!?? AWESOME!!! but when you're going through it and your brain is trying to parse just what the heck is going on it can really take the weight out of some scenes...especially when you make those scenes heavily rely on an army of nerds like myself and information from a 3rd entry in order to make the most sense. That could just be a trilogy problem and not exclusive to this game...waiting sucks!
Yeah I noticed some little details like that in the finale, like how Cloud starts off as the only party member without a filled limit break. It’s definitely worth looking into to understand the full scope of the finale, even if it still didn’t resonate with me emotionally
So well said! I played Remake and a bit of Rebirth, but it was too much, then I went back and played the original for the first time (with the fantastic Echo voice acting mod) and it was such a drastic improvement in story telling! And the pacing was great, and the materia system still holds up.
That's the thing with this section of the game in OG, there is no 60 to 70 hours of main content. Point for point the events are the same in both OG and Rebirth. Rebirth just gives you a reason and more context to explore.
The og game was restrained by limitations, most of the time. It is untouched there, sacred, so whatever comes next, i want to be big, and i want to be long, and i want it to be harder.
So true.. i love the game but the checklist just destroys the experience. I can tolerate the icon maybe IF only it will appear after discovering and completing it - just for the fast travel later. Also, the dev could have hold off Chadley's updates until talking to him directly in town. Also, I wish they could just remove any indicator of complete discoveries so we won't know that we've reached the end. From what I'm seeing so far. I think the 3rd part will be post-apocalyptic world - wutai war, weapons on rampage (similar to FFXV). I think it will be a picture a death like the dirge of cerberus. The dev did say that the remake project will conclude all compilation, including the novels. So I'm thinking the theme will be similar to dirge of cerberus and Vincent will have early access to chaos materia and we will see Omega Weapon (Dirge of Cerberus). Sephiroth needs people dying so he could collect "worlds" to unite so he is working on 2 fronts - wutai war and the meteor. This saturation in the lifestream I think will activate Omega and he wants to use IT to reach the realm of the CREATOR where the lifestream originally came from. And the seven seconds is the time Cloud will have to decide on whether to stop Omega or let it go. Cloud stopping Omega in dirge of cerberus was Jenova's win in the OG (the bad ending). Letting Omega go is Sephiroth's win but it would mean the early demise of Gaia which Aerith is trying to prevent. I think I like how they are doing the remake project, it is telling us not only what's happening on the surface of Gaia, but also what's happening within the lifestream. The latter is also important for explaining how the lifestream stopped the meteor in the OG and how the party win the battle but gets defeated in the war.
Weak framing for the open world is spot on. Hopefully part 3 finds a way to address this. I'm partial to traversal mechanics that let the player hot-swap party members, who can work together to conquer terrain just like they do enemies.
Sephiroth was already hard to take seriously in the original, because of the whole mommy issues thing. He just struck me as some pathetic wretch who threw a tantrum and felt the need to be coddled by his perceived mom over hojo being a bad person.
Zero Mission and RE 1 2002 remake are the best example to this day on how to do a remake RIGHT. It replace the original, makes them obsolete but preserve t he original, enhance them and add to it there is no reason to play either 96 resident evil or the OG metroid from 1987. FF 7 remake/Rebirth require that you know the OG so as remakes they are a failure.
What I disliked is: -music remixes, og is legendary, remake was great, rebirth falls seriously short -pacccciiinnnggg, 3 games to 1... -tone of the game, as a blueprint og shows how great it can be. And I know we 90s edgelords aren't in fashion now. -this is a silly argument but... Why rehashed og things are great and new stuff sucks or is mediocre? As a hd experience it's ok. As a remake... In the 90s we though all stupid whacky bullshit is because that's Clouds distorted perception. Here they have to hammer them as legit. Edit: Just watched the full vid. We had similar feelings. Og was kinda a piece of art while rebirth is just a game. Below a great anime or game that it kinda mixes.
I thought the music was great. Why would I want to listen to the same exact songs every 100 hr video game? What I didn’t like though, was how horribly mixed the audio was, compared to remake.

Whatever faults Rebirth may have, I'm thankful for it after suffering through the utter trash that was FF16.
Man, I'm so with you on that one!
I loved both 🤷♂️ sucks for you two though
