Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is undoubtedly my personal GOAT. It leaps and bounds miles ahead of what they did with Remake, improving on everything that they did on a PS4. Whenever I felt the formula was getting stale, suddenly the next thing to explore popped up or a new story cutscene played out or a new minigame was ready. I frequently checked my completion progress and it just kept going even after 40, 50, 60, 100 hours. This game gave me so much joy in those hours, and I cannot wait for the finale.
Hear hear! 🍻 I’m currently up to 225-230 hours in-game and 270 on the PlayStation counter since I split my save files for optional dialogue reasons, grinding for all the different copies of magic materia and unique MAX materia, finishing all the extra Brutal Challenges to get a Dynamic Difficulty 100% and now I’ve just got Hard Mode to conquer. This was a blast to play through throughout March and early April. It’s not even I’m fatigued to complete a 100% Hard Mode playthrough, I’m just waiting for my one of my sisters to have ample time finishing her studies and relax and play through the story with her!
@@67Dragonball You are making me feel a bit better here with your hours in the game. I am also at 270 hours which is almost double my previous record for most time I've spent on any single game in my 30-ish years of playing games. All I have left for the platinum is rulers of the outer worlds and hard mode chapter 14. So close to the end and it's still the best game I've played. Cannot wait for part 3.
I played Remake last January and then loved it so much that I played the original, Crisis Core, and watched the film. All that made playing Rebirth so much more enjoyable. This series is one of my favorite things in gaming, it may honestly be the best.
Bro took the words out of my mouth. Rebirth had such a stranglehold on me that no game since has been even close to doing. The world, the characters, the story is just magical and is now my favorite game of all time. It saddens me to see it performing not as well as Square hoped and I hope that part 3 is not affected at all by it.
As a mid-30s fan of the original I'm astounded how well you were able to encapsulate exactly the nuances that have us returning to this game. Really well done, instant sub.
Nice essay, I’m glad I watched. I was 13 when FF7 came out. This section of the game was the most special part for me. Escaping Midgar and seeing the wide beautiful world, in what was mind blowing graphics at the time, and the characters having a chance to bond, all with Uematsu’s dreamy score, left an unforgettable mark on me and everyone else who played it. That’s what Rebirth was about, and it sounds like it made its case to you as you got through it.
Absolutely. Uematsu is a genius. The reason i even started the series in the first place was hearing the FF7 music offhand and being blown away. I still remember listening while studying for exams freshman year. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your experience.
I appreciate that you were able to examine it with a critical lens while still being able to acknowledge that every shortcoming the game may have is a direct result of a very intentional design philosophy the developers had for the game, one that mirrors and extends that of the original game. Old RPGS were often slow, meandering, tonally confused at times, even bloated. But that was because they were giving you a full wide range, and hills and valleys, of a journey. Of an adventure. And that's the point of them, not a flaw. This was the first rpg in a long time to really be able to encapsulate that old feeling again.
Exactly, it’s all about appreciating the magic of everything Rebirth has to offer - not about treating everything as if it was designed in a vacuum. Thanks so much for watching
Thank you for making this video. Your words in Part 4 resonated so deeply with me. This game begged the player to step into its fantasy and engage at a fundamental level, and it breaks my heart to feel like that's something we're losing in the video game medium. I remember looking at some meticulously designed plant pots in Under Junon and realizing how much love had been poured into each iota of this game's world. It was then and there that I realized I needed to slow things down and get lost in the wonder of it all.
I just think it's a sign to embrace weirdness and discomfort because they can help us grow and find joy - So glad you and got something out of this. Thanks so much for watching
I finished rebirth 4 months ago and I still can’t stop thinking about it, such a special game. Honestly It’s not gonna be an easy task to fit in the rest off FF7 into one game with all the new and complex key elements, the whole world, and huge chunk of main story still left, but if they actually manage to do it as well as they did rebirth, it will probably be the best game of all time, straight up.
From one video essay-ist to another , this was just so beautiful . 11/10 work. I wasn’t a huge fan of rebirth for exactly the reasons you talked about with its seemingly meaningless meandering, but now I think I’m going to give it another play through with fresh eyes.
6:32 "And the manner in which she and Cloud develop a connection just feels like sheer magic." Every moment with Aerith does feel like magic. She brings out the best in Cloud.
Man, you have a great eye for capturing (and picking/editing) meaningful and well framed gameplay scenes. Its a joy to watch the video. Don’t give up on gaming, you have an eye for seeing the special in them.
I love that you talked about the character as being the heart of this game. I understand people being disappointed in how aimless the first half of the story feels, but I just loved getting to know these characters. The many small intimate character moments and interactions are really what I love the most about this series and they are done so well. I’ll put up with any amount of time ghosts for them. Amazing video thank you! Instant sub.
I don't think I've seen a video on Rebirth that made me feel the joy and wonder I felt when playing the game as much as this video here. Thank you for putting this together, very well done!
I genuinely think this video is the essential youtube video essay to understand, what I felt playing this game. Never played the original, but both Remake and Rebirth made me feel like a child as an early 20s guy. Like this is the stuff I would have dedicated my entire personality as a grade schooler if it existed back then. The serious moments hit harder because of the comical elements, the gameplay is amazing, the graphics are amazing, the story is... I don't know how to say it properly, but just makes you sit down in front of the TV and you never want to get up, it makes you lost in the world and characters. And the music, breath-taking is not enough to describe it... Your video made me tear up because it reminded me how much I love this game! Thanks. (Liked, subbed and turned on notification, just so you know)
I follow FF since i was around 9years old, im 31 atm and i already watched hundred of videos about this franchise. Let me tell you that your way of explaining the magic around FF7 is one of a kind. Keep up with the good work!
Really impressed that you managed to put into words what so many of us chase when we turn to a Final Fantasy. Congrats on another excellent video essay!
Really nice review. I think you're spot on about people not being as attuned to fantasy as they used to be. The gritty hyper-realism in entertainment that accompanied the rise of Silicon Valley tech optimists and social media has conditioned people to expect a vulgar and intense cynicism out of their stories and sapped them of vital imagination. Game of Thrones style Machiavellian power politics has been the status quo for a while, and many who have grown up in this era have known nothing else. After all, we're supposed to be predictable consumers managed by the experts that have solved the metagame of humanity. Unironic romantic visions are inefficient and something to roll your eyes and snicker at. Love is just chemicals in the brain. Come on man that stuff's not real. The icepick of rationality digs into your temple once more. But every once and a while, through all the noise and over-rational reductionism you get a vision of beauty; something that inspires in you to want to look beyond the mundane limitations of our nature. This game series has restored a piece of that vision of beauty in me. And I agree with you, it was hard to get on it's wavelength at first. But that feeling of being greater than the sum of it's parts has always been a hallmark of great works to me, and I definitely feel that way about this game.
Thank you for finding your fantasy while adulting! This is my life changing childhood game and for this game, taking 200 hours away from work, family and kids, I have no regrets for sure. Coming from a OG player POV, to me, the ambiguous ending n development of this remake trilogy is addressing something real deep about life and death. We all know Aerith's fate... OG FF7 ended in a endless loop... And now, Square Enix is trying to end the loop of life and death... Imagine how polarised fans will become. It will not please everyone, but a true artist continues to express its art no matter what
That was a beautiful love letter to Rebirth. It gave me all the right feels and your use of music is spot on. liked, subscribed and a big thank you for this video.
Fantastic video, and love the progression of your take. Rebirth took me back to those days of wandering through the old rpgs I would replay so many times when I was younger. I might not end up replaying games like this or that nearly as much now that I'm much older, but the magic still exists, even if it's for a shorter time.
Real amazing game. A real labor of love the likes you never see nowadays. I hope part 3 is made with just as much care despite low sales and bad reception from 'Gamers INC' and so called final fantasy 'fans'.
@@CView I hope it wins Goty so that maybe it can garner more interest. I honestly believe this is the best combat system i've ever seen in a jrpg and should be the way forward for this series.
Great video mate. Well crafted. Rebirth is def one of a kind. @25:00 But I don’t think it’s about friction as much. Elden ring and baldurs gate have significant friction as such but sold extremely well. I think the main issue is that non-fans en masse just aren’t interested and haven’t been hooked onto this amazing game. Hope it wins GOTY and ends on a real high and draws new fans to the FF7 remake series in the long term, persisting thru gaming hisotry
I'm only 5 mins in and this is already the best overview I've ever seen in my 34 years. I put 340 hours into this game for that platinum. I generally don't play any other games but I make a special exception for this game. Games are ART
What an amazing video. Thank you for conveying VIIRebirth's magic and childhoodness so well. Fortunately we still have FFVII magic to come in the future :D
I feel like there's a misconception when it comes to the sales of Rebirth or even Final Fantasy 16. First of all, SquareEnix is notorious for setting unreasonably high sales expectations for most of their games and this includes both Rebirth and FF16 also Rebirth is still within the top ten best selling games of the year so far. Furthermore Final Fantasy 7 Remake came out just as the world was shutting down so more people had time to buy and play video games. I truly believe the video game industry is rebalancing itself back to normal sales and expectations. Since the world more or less back to normal, I feel like Rebirth's sales are fine considering everyone is back to work.
@@CView I guess we won’t truly know until SquareEnix releases sales numbers. However, regardless of where it’s tracking, it doesn’t change the fact that sales expectations for games coming out now shouldn’t be based off sales from three/four years ago since the circumstances then allowed for more people to be playing more games.
This is the kind of review I've been looking for as far as rebirth. I really loved it on a genuine level and felt captivated by the wholesomeness mixed with the seriousness and feeling every emotion on the spectrum! And then tons of reviews are just "too many mini games and condeluded ending" and I really liked the ending and I think the death is gonna have a huge payoff in part 3
Thank you CView for sharing your view of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. While not a gamer myself I've watched all 130+ hours of streamers slow-play through the game it's interesting you mentioned the lack of financial success despite it's thoroughly mesmerising gameplay. Your final answer that people nowadays not having enough patience to appreciate the game of the decade, not only applies to video gaming but to life as well. Through your video I got the answer I was seeking, that I need to seek people not just with similar ideologies but with the same patience levels as well. Thank you CView for reminding me this crucial fact.
Cool that you enjoyed it and interesting. Ultimately I couldn't look past the changes they made to the OG, I felt betrayed and scammed into a kingdom hearts version of what is a much darker and beautiful story than what is betrayed in remake and rebirth.
I hope your video reaches a broader audience, you deserve it. You have an eloquent way of speaking and you perfectly managed to capture how I felt as well playing both of these games. Remake was my first entry into the FF franchise as well, and since playing both that, Crisis Core Reunion and Rebirth I have yet to find that same magic that 'captured' me in other FF games like the FF7 games did.
I think there really is something special here - I just hope Square can distill it into a future FF game and somehow capture a larger audience while doing so. A tall task indeed.
If you are looking for that kind of magic, some of the old school FF games (especially from 6 to 10) share that 'fantasy' as described in the video but with their own twists and identities. I don't know if you already looked into these, but I'll post my recommendations regardless. One element that can be a dealbreaker to some people, however, is the fact that the old schools games have turn-based combat systems (10 being turn-based, 6 to 9 being active time turn-based). The systems are well made for the most part, tho, (with 10's battle system and leveling system being ... *chef's kiss*) but it's important to note. Going back to my recommendations : FFVI is probably the closest to FFVII (but in 2D, SNES game). It shares similarities in several aspects like the tone juggling between goofiness/levity, more serious moments and sometimes downright dark/disturbing/tragic sequences ; some great characters (however, as FF6 has tons of characters that join the party (with several secret ones) not all of them are 'great', some are even more like 'joke characters'), memorable music and one of the best vilain in the series. It's actually very impressive to see how much the developers were able to push themselve to tell a story and make the characters as expressive as they are through small 2D sprites on a massive SNES game three decades ago. It aged very well in my opinion. FF10 is another one I highly recommend. An eclectic cast of characters that for the most part get a satisfying amount of character development much like FFVII Remake/Rebirth ; one of the best stories in the series ; beautiful cutscenes ; LOTS of optional/missable dialogues that deepen further each of the main characters ; voice acting (I like the voice acting but sometimes it's a bit weird as the voice is slowed down or hasten to match the japanese lip sync) ; again the game can juggle between levity and sadness/seriousness ; masterful battle system and leveling system ; some great end game content in the form of secrets summons, dungeons and superbosses ; But also some painful endgame (unlocking each character's ultimate weapon is pure sadism) ; Some story dungeons (temples) can be a bit confusing or even boring to solve, it's one of the weakest part of the game. Game still looks pretty good despite being a 23 years old game (the remaster is good enough but they butchered some of the characters models compared to the PS2 original game). The game is relatively similar to FFVII Remake in its linearity but with plenty of unique locations to see (it's not as 'narrow' in its level design, but the story forces you on a path before reaching a point where the game opens up and let you decide what you want to do and where you want to go next). FF9 is great too, the only real problem I have with it is the battle system. It's slow and the Trance system (which is the """"limit break"""" of FF9) is cool on paper but not well integrated into the game. Otherwise, a lot of great stuff in FF9. There's a card game, by the way. FF8 is a game I love, one of the first I did (with 6 and 7) two decade and a half ago. It's a weird beast with a very deep (but weird) leveling system. Also, the enemy get stronger as you gain levels (a bit of a precursor to the dynamic difficulty mode of VII Rebirth, but it's a bit weirder in 8 as you can play the whole game without fighting random battles as you can get extremely strong without gaining any level... When I say it's a weird game, I mean it). The world is also a mix of fantasy and inspirations of the real world with modern cars, a city that look like Paris, etc.). OH, there's a card game in this one too (and a great one at that), it's called Triple Triad.
The fact that I am constantly SHOOK when people say they weren’t even born when this came out isn’t a testament to me being old, even. It’s a testament to how shockingly YOUNG most of you are, honestly. I became a game designer in the industry because of this game and Chrono Trigger. I’m just glad people who genuinely aren’t even adults yet (or slightly are…you don’t even have the slightest clue until at least 27, and even then, we are are still naive idiots, and I come from a special forces military family background, even lol) but can still appreciate this series gives me hope in humanity, and my career.
I noticed couple of months ago that I enjoy replaying the games second time more than the first time by far. I replayed ghost of Tsushima days gone. I replayed resident evil and I replayed final fantasy remake. Maybe I'm getting order maybe by knowing what's coming my expectation never goes wild. Btw I subscribed
I think we just have more walls up when we get older - things don’t get through as easy. Glad i can still enjoy games even though im getting older. Thanks for watching and for subbing
@@CView me too. I like games with stories, but I'm changing my perspective. now I'm playing doom 2016 and doom eternal. I'm liking them. They don't have a story, but they have great gameplay, great music and great atmosphere.
Im about 150 hours into this game personally, and I’ve loved every second (maybe not the amount of tries it took to beat the final boss gauntlet) but i had NO IDEA there was a chicken mission still hiding someplace. Dang.
My man you deserve a lot more recognition than you currently have. But keep it up because the quality of the videos and the way you explain things is on another level. I've been struggling to put the pressure and fear I felt while starting the game and that you mentioned in the video into words but you have done so effortlessly and beautifully. Amazing game, incredible video and I can't wait to play the third instalment and after finishing it, watch your video on it.
Great essay. Don't worry too much about the future though, in the recent presentation the developers gave in Qiddiya, they showed great enthusiasm and confidence about part 3. I think the sale number etc might not be as bad as outside source estimated.
I've heard it's about half of what Remake has sold. It's not like part 3 is going to be cancelled, but im just nervous why people aren't responding to this universally acclaimed game. www.ign.com/articles/are-final-fantasy-7-rebirth-sales-struggling-we-asked-the-experts#
You may find a similar joy in playing FF9 and 10, and possibly the original 7. Though, they are very different from the modern games you’ve played, they are considered the golden age of Final Fantasy.
Man. I’ve never even played this game and feel like I’ve been in it since the beginning! The only UA-camr who could make me feel for spiky haired video game characters 😃 YOU ROCK MR C….. VIEW😎
The algorithm strikes again. I’m always glad to see more people join the FFVII fandom. Welcome and enjoy sir. I played the original game many times and I love what they have done with Remake and Rebirth. Patiently waiting for the third game!
Great video, you really nailed the focus on characters this game prioritizes over all else. Personally, I think the story from around Junon to Nibelheim is great and a huge improvement over the original. But I think you need to go in with the right mindset. In the original, this part of the story is a very discordant juxtaposition of Cloud's complete focus on his imagined rivalry with Sephiroth set against a backdrop of how Shinra, despite its seemingly singular presence in Midgar, reshaped the entire world and made it vulnerable to the machinations of Sephiroth, an entity they elevated to godhood through their own corporate interests. If you go into Rebirth with this view of the story, the friction suddenly serves a purpose. The tedium of creating value for Chadley and others in order to earn introspective dialogue regarding the characters' places in this world paint a consistent picture of exploitation for a fleeting sense of comfort and assurance, mirroring Cloud's own reckoning with his identity. The environmental storytelling is near-perfect, showing complex relationships and consequences from Shinra's use of mako and the individual experiences people have living in such a world. The ending of remake and the beginning of rebirth I think set the wrong impression and undermine what this game is trying to do with its story. If remake didn't end with a multiversal confrontation of Sephiroth and a reveal of Zack's world, I think Rebirth would feel a lot more focused and more contiguous with remake's portrayal of Shinra. But instead players, whether they have played the original or not, go in expecting a follow up to this obviously more pressing and urgent multiversal plot with Sephiroth rather than engaging with Shinra's slow destruction of the planet. At the end of remake, Aerith literally says Shinra aren't the real bad guys, Sephiroth is the real bad guy. But Rebirth's story, up until the second visit to the Golden Saucer, is still telling a story where Shinra is the main bad guy. I think that was a mistake and a lot of people are not going to be able to finish what I think, with the right framing, is actually an excellent story. One that only a video game can tell by having you actually visit and engage with its world as if it were a real place.
Fantastic video! 💯 Rebirth is a masterpiece and one of the best experiences that I have ever had with a piece of fiction. This is a magical review of a magical game. ✨
Dude. First of your videos i watch. You are good. I am an FFVII fan. But completely regardless of that, your script-writing is fantastic. Your audio editing added so much emotion. You should continue making videos. I will watch.
Good video : ) Something ingenious about FF7 and Rebirth in particular, is all the daft crap that Cloud pretends to be ‘not interested’ is actually the point. Cloud pretends like the only thing he cares about is tracking down Sephiroth, but the truth is he ‘is interested’ in playing a children’s card game, racing chocobos, making cool friends and going on dates with Aerith. A player might be frustrated with the mini games and side quests. They might feel they get in the way of the story. They might try and race to the end. They might be just trying to find out if Aerith dies again. They might be like the SOLDIER Cloud who wants to take things seriously. But if you want to be more like the real Cloud, just try and have some fun.
Great video, I like your style of breaking things down and building them up. if you can, take time to play the game again with the context of the first playthrough, you pick out even more subtleties that the dev's hid in this incredible labor of love and the series as a whole.
Oh I’m sure I’ve missed so many hidden details - the care was overflowing. Even when I went back to replay for footage, I noticed so many new things. Thanks so much for watching
@@CView the OG FF7 came out in my teen years and it meant a lot to me and the friendships I had at the time. The remake series has been an amazing combo of nostalgia and newness so effortlessly rolled together i implicitly trust the dev's to stick the landing but rewrite what a stuck landing is. Also its wonderful to see new fans become just as hooked with the new series to see the wonder we all had before in new fans is heartwarming.
I loved the original FF 7. The remake was pretty, but Nomura (who should never been trusted with anything outside character design) ruined it with his hooded figures and over reliance on Sephiroth. But then I had two weeks on my hands where I had to stay at home but didn’t have anything to do. So I got Rebirth, thinking I probably wouldn’t finish it. It was all I did, and could think about, for those two weeks. I haven’t mourned finishing a game like this since I finished FF X back when it came out. I heard someone say it feels like it’s something super fancy that only really rich people should have access to, like a private jet. It feels like that. It really made me feel I was experiencing something magical in a way I haven’t in over a decade.
The combat simulator is my favorite part of the game for some reason. I finished around 120 hours, platinum at like 400 and am in the high 700s. I still go back to the story but the combat with all materias and max weapon level and Party level is so addictive and fun. Story was awesome. I happen to be against so many minigames, but in the end im satisfied with giving it a good score.
I haven't played the original, but I thoroughly loved Remake. I played it two times, on PS4 and 5 + the bonus chapters. Rebirth though just never clicked for me. I'm at chapter 10 and just really wishing it would just end, and I've had it since launch because obviously I was really looking forward to it. I guess I'm just extremely tired of everything needing to be open world nowaday, the pacing of certain games - that would otherwise be excellent experiences - suffers terribly, and I think this game Is a prime example of that. Editing this because I forgot to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the video, even though I disagree with some stuff, your passion while talking about the game is truly wonderful and shines through.
Commenting for engagment. Im hoping to play the VII rebirth so I dont want to spoil myself, but what i have seen this video is very well written and executed. I'll let it play while i shower to give it that watch time. Good luck friend, may your work recieve the recognition it deserves
The "Legend in the Making" returns .... Your passion, insights and personal sharing are very meaningful and appreciated .. very deep piece that gathered momentum and in the end left me genuinely feeling good and smiling .. wondering/hoping when we will see more from CV
You really have a gift for making videos and are quite articulate with your expansive vocabulary when being descriptive. I agree, Remake was more focused on the story while Rebirth gave you an even bigger option to focus on the world itself. As a player of the Original game, when they had said remake, I was thinking of a one to one remake with maybe a couple of embellishments here and there throughout the game. What we got was a bit jarring at first. After I came to accept the new direction, I come to realize it wasn't really a new direction after all, it is the same story told from another angle in few different arrangements which kind of disappointed me actually. When they said the "Unknown Journey" I finally came to piece with it, it's like they feared the backlash for not writing the story almost 95% the same with the extra narrative. There are still a lot of mysteries that we will not know until part three. Have you played Crisis Core Reunion yet? That game while it looks great and has better mechanics than its original, still has the clunky and awkward acting of the 2000s, but is integral to the story. You come to know who Zack is and for many, this game was their entry point. This is one reason why we have the shipping wars within the fandom between the cleriths, the clotis, and now the Zeriths (Which I know fall in). With this game's prior knowledge you get the dramatic irony of the feelings that Aerith and Zack are feeling... and then later Tifa and Cloud. The compilation just doesn't end there, there was a japanese mobile game called Before Crisis which features the entire Turk organization and you get an even grander story that overlaps with Crisis Core Reunion. They only medium now is a fan made version you can download or watch a play through on youtube. There are only a couple of traces throughout the two entries so far that are used from Before Crisis. They really give you Avalanche's and Shinra's Turks interactions while introducing all the main characters while expanding the universe with new ones like Verdot and Elfe and the main antagonist, Fuhito. Then of course the sequel to the OG which is Advent Children which is a movie which I would recommend watching. The last entry chronologically in the compilation is Dirge of Cerebus which came out on PS2. The game itself again was clunky but interesting all the same and focused on Vincent Valentine, with Reeve/Cait Sith, and Yuffie. That game had an awesome cinematic ending and a secret ending that left the compilation open for a future entry. It even had a multiplayer version in Japan which never came out in the US which added more characters in that story that weren't in the main version. Then of course they had a mobile First Soldier game that was interesting but failed ultimately because it was a just a mobile game and the scale I feel it required really would have been better played on PC and console. So finally comes Ever Crisis which is like a readers digest of the entire compilation but with including First Soldier which focuses on 3 new characters from the past and gives us Sephiroth's origin story. So basically right now we are expecting 6 Grand stories in the entire compilation of Ever Crisis FF7 which chronologically will be First Soldier, Before Crisis, Crisis Core, FF7 Original, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerebus. Once you get into the compilation and really can appreciate it, it becomes a complete Saga. A UA-camr named Sleepezi did many analytic videos on the compilation and there have been a couple of others who did it quite well. If the Devs plan on tying up all the loose ends in the compilation in part 3, we can expect the final entry to be close to twice as big as Rebirth. with about 70-80 hours of main story beats that tie up the loose ends and about 150-200 hours full of side content. While the 2nd part was a huge undertaking and challenge developmentally, the third will be the biggest narratively in my opinion. I have faith in them, I hope they give Zack and Aerith the happy ending they deserve even if it may be a bittersweet one.
There is so much to the Final Fantasy 7 saga/series/whatever - I have not played Crisis Core Reunion yet. I have only played 7 Remake and 7 Rebirth. I've heard I need to play Crisis Core so that will be on my list for sure. The entire saga feels impossible to experience "correctly" bc of how many games are in it like you described all with their unique facets and details. Im going to stick it out with the new Remake series and then play the older games once it's concluded. Thank you so much for watching and your thoughtful comment

Tremendous video and superb editing. It’s funny because even though I’m a massive super fan of FF7, I remember feeling a bit caught off guard by how loose the driving elements of the narrative were early on. You’re essentially just following mindless zombies (which does happen in the OG). The early chapters feeling like they’re lacking real narrative thrust is, I think, from the aspect that the story is divided into 3 games. As one cohesive story, this is essentially the beginning of Act 2 and that section of a story is what some screenwriting books called “Fun and Games.” The stakes are set in the first act and now you’re off on an adventure that’s ultimately headed towards more dramatic places, but not just yet. It’s where you’re learning more about the characters and how they’re navigating the world. That’s great at the 1/3rd mark of a story, but when you’re just starting a new story, you often need more of a clear narrative thrust/inciting incident. While Rebirth **somewhat** lacks that, it’s because that’s what the first game was meant to do. But unless you start it right after beating Remake, it feels like momentum has been lost. But overall, really beautiful ode to the pacing of this game, which is purposefully slowed for all of the reasons you mentioned and because of where this game picks up in the greater flow of the 3-game experience.
Great video. If you have the stomach for other JRPGs that are magical like Rebirth, but also have "valleys" like you describe- I highly recommend the Xenoblade franchise.
@@CView That is a huge topic of debate that will have a very different answer depending on who you ask! In my personal opinion, I think each entry in the series outdoes the previous one. So to me, 2 was better than 1, and 3 is better than both 1 and 2. 1 you can definitely feel it's age and the fact that it was originally a Wii game, but the Definitive Edition remaster does a good job at covering up it's rough edges, adding some polish, and introducing some much needed QOL improvements. It also has really phenomenal pacing for the first half of the story, and some of the best English voice acting in that series, with some absolutely incredible delivery from the main character. It's combat is a bit more simple than the combat in 2 or 3, but it's also the first game in the series, so it being the more simple "base" that the other entries build upon and innovate from makes sense. 1's setting and tone feels a lot like a classic SNES RPG to me, but blown up with the best production values the Wii could possibly muster. There are an insane amount of sidequests, but the majority of them are kind of filler. Think of them like MMO quests- just accept a ton at once, and don't intentionally try to complete them- you will complete at least half just by exploring the world and fighting things at your own pace. 3 is a masterpiece and my personal favorite game of all time. It elevates sidequest quality higher than I have ever seen in a JRPG before. Don't get me wrong, there is a fair share of pretty basic quests or objectives, but the sidequests layer on top of each other. Completion of earlier, simpler ones unlocks and allows more interesting ones to appear or be accepted. It builds up to the point where you eventually are doing sidequests that feel so pivotal and important, with production value so high, that it feels like it is part of the main quest, despite being completely optional. The rewards are pretty crazy too, sidequests can culminate in unlocking entirely new party members or classes for your characters. 3 takes itself a fair bit more seriously than 2 does- it's setting and tone demands it. Many fans of 2 don't like that. But it has massive pay offs later in the game that absolutely make it worth it. It has some of the most emotionally gripping moments I have ever experienced in a video game.
So I am one of those old ***** that actually played FF7 back in 1997, Alway's been my Fav game since I first played it. (Try out FF9 + Moguri Mod for another Square EPIC) I know some people have their problems with the Remake trilogy of FF7 franchise but personally what Rebirth did for this game Franchise has got to be celebrated, Its a masterpiece. Kudos to SE! Also enjoyed the vid so sub + like
@@CView You could probably make a 1 to 1 remake with modern graphics using AI, people just too lazy to do it, FF9 Moguri Mod being my evidence for that, They have totally enhanced this game to new levels the OG could never reach, The music alone was worth the money imo.
@@CView I would also say to those folks 1 question, How do you remake a 1 to 1 version of the overworld of FF7 og, without it being stupid ? FF7 OG was alot of instanced off areas and a massive overworld, so how do you make a AAA version of that ?
A well-written and edited video! However, I don't think Rebirth's low sales are due to "friction." I think the low sales are due to two problems - one obvious, the latter less so. The first is its PS5 exclusivity, which is the obvious one. The second however, is the lack of stakes. I discuss this at length in a 3-hour video I made critiquing Remake's ending (I posted it to my channel back in early February; a month before Remake came out, so some of it is a bit dated now). The gist of the video is that Remake's ending didn't leave players with anything to ROOT for, because Sephiroth's character and motivations are poorly explained, and the trilogy blew its load too soon by having a climactic, interdimensional boss rush at the end of Remake. When the first game in a trilogy ends with the heroes declaring that they need to stop the villain from destroying the whole planet, my immediate response should NOT be: "So what?" That's literally what I said to my TV upon beating Remake. MEANINGFUL CONFLICT is the soul of storytelling. Conflict is the crux of what makes anything in life interesting. And Remake's ending failed to make many players FEEL INVESTED in wherever the story is going - "Why does any of this "alternate worlds" nonsense even MATTER? Why should we CARE about where the story goes from here? HOW IS THIS A GOOD STORY?" THAT, I think, is the main reason why Rebirth is underperforming - both Remake and Rebirth (and the marketing for the latter) have failed to provide viewers with a good reason to remain emotionally invested in the story. It's hard to care about anything Sephiroth is doing beyond mere intellectual curiosity (which you can get by simply looking up Rebirth's plot synopsis on Wikipedia). I understand the words being said, but Sephiroth's goals and actions don't make me FEEL anything other than: "Oh. ... OK, then." When a substantial portion of the audience DOESN'T CARE about whatever your villain is doing, we've got a problem - there's no reason for them to pick up the next game to see where the story is headed.
As a “boomer” who played the OG on day 1 and it being the reason I still play video games…rebirth is the perfect “remake”. I only blame zoomers for the underwhelming sales. Kidding, well kidding a little. However, no idea how this goat of a game sold less than shitfests, although fun, like helldivers 2. Not gonna hate, but this generation of gamers Love mindless bs and anything that will win their side of whatever culture war they are on. Great video and editing. Glad the algorithm brought me to this video. Only game that comes close to GOTY against rebirth is Astro Bot. Hopefully Rebirth gets it though. Truly a remarkable game.
Ive only been able to watch others play it, because no ps5. But i've felt the excitement through others. I don't like its exclusive at the get go, it really screws ur sales and people like me who have seen it through others because they cant play it may not even buy it when it comes to pc cause they've already seen it. Kind of a weird strategy to me.
@@CView I think FFX is a game you have to prepare your mind to play, turn back time 20 years in your head to a time where things were more slow. Todays World is all go go go and FFX is a game you really have to slow yourself and your surroundings down to truly enjoy. If you play it i would suggest you make a lets play Series out of it with 1 hour episodes but record 4-5 episodes at a time so you spend a lot of time (in the slow mind zone) Talk to every npc to get to know the world and its people. I would love to watch and i know a lot of people will as well
I find it funny that you played the other modern FFs to recapture the feeling of FF7 Remake, a game that was deliberately paying tribute to the 90s FFs. Did you play 6-10? Those are the best ones, maybe 12 too?
i hated this game a lot, and i loved the original. The KH storytelling of this game, the padding, the unnecessary changes, the tone, just about everything except for the battle system were unbearable for me. That said, your video is very well made and you should be very proud of your content-creating prowess. Hope you achieve greatness here. Liked and subscribed.
Haha your name says it all - I think there is a tremendous issue with dialogue cadence (the gaps between characters delivering lines or the subtle emotions that don’t quite line up with the emotion of what the VA is saying) and that ruins a lot of the story impact for most ppl juxtaposed to the realistic graphics. I definitely want to look at this in a future video (in JRPGs as a whole). With that being said, thank you for giving the video a chance - are there any JRPGs you can tolerate these days?
@@CView thanks for the feedback. To answer your question, the last game i liked was FF16, bc in spite of its many severe flaws, i saw that there was an honest and dedicated effort to make a game and tell a good story. The game still lacks in many areas, very much, but i appreciate the way the dev team "cared". And this is coming from a guy who was very disappointed with TotK and GoWRagnarok among other games. Media for me has been very uninspiring for the past recent years, heck i watched Dune 2 on Imax and still didnt like it. Just like you very well explained, we are in our mid 30s looking for deeper meaning and reasons to play and to delve into media. I guess life has hardened my taste. I began as an MGS gamer, and i think those games are a very tough act to follow. Precisely, after MGS, one of the few games that amazed me was OG FF7. I hope i soften up a little bit, i dont like being let down by entertainment. Heres hoping my self/acumen/world changes for the better. Thanks again, and may the lifestream be with you fellow gamer.
I think ultimately happiness out of games will stem from the way you get happiness out of life. IMO Media isn’t an end in itself, but games/movies/music nudge our hearts and minds in the right direction of what we are really looking for in life and can open our eyes to beauty we may not quite understand yet. I know you will find that project that scratches that itch, but I promise it’ll coincide with some life perspective change you get out of it.
This game gave me so much joy in those hours, and I cannot wait for the finale.
well said 🫡
I haven’t played many others in this series but will definitely have to check them out after rebirth - thanks for watching!
Crises Core was awesome
Bro took the words out of my mouth. Rebirth had such a stranglehold on me that no game since has been even close to doing. The world, the characters, the story is just magical and is now my favorite game of all time. It saddens me to see it performing not as well as Square hoped and I hope that part 3 is not affected at all by it.
I don’t think it will - hopefully in time this game will get the recognition it deserves
As a mid-30s fan of the original I'm astounded how well you were able to encapsulate exactly the nuances that have us returning to this game. Really well done, instant sub.
Glad you enjoyed and could identity with the sentiment - thanks so much for watching
My favorite game of all time. Thank you for this, I started crying… just like in the actual game.
❤️ glad it was a special experience for you too - thank you for watching
And when the world needed him the most... He returned
Hope you enjoyed
@@CView Bro, everything you said was spot on, and I especially liked what you said at 6:18
From one video essay-ist to another , this was just so beautiful . 11/10 work. I wasn’t a huge fan of rebirth for exactly the reasons you talked about with its seemingly meaningless meandering, but now I think I’m going to give it another play through with fresh eyes.
Definitely give it another shot! Would love to check out any of your rebirth video if you’ve got one
6:32 "And the manner in which she and Cloud develop a connection just feels like sheer magic."
Every moment with Aerith does feel like magic. She brings out the best in Cloud.

Man, you have a great eye for capturing (and picking/editing) meaningful and well framed gameplay scenes. Its a joy to watch the video. Don’t give up on gaming, you have an eye for seeing the special in them.
Glad you enjoyed
I love that you talked about the character as being the heart of this game. I understand people being disappointed in how aimless the first half of the story feels, but I just loved getting to know these characters.
The many small intimate character moments and interactions are really what I love the most about this series and they are done so well. I’ll put up with any amount of time ghosts for them.
Amazing video thank you! Instant sub.
The game (and especially the characters) really are so magical - thank you so much for watching
I don't think I've seen a video on Rebirth that made me feel the joy and wonder I felt when playing the game as much as this video here. Thank you for putting this together, very well done!
best possible thing I could hear - thanks so much for watching :)
Incredible video for one of the best video game experiences I've ever had. Thank you for letting me relive it for half an hour
So glad you got something out of it
I genuinely think this video is the essential youtube video essay to understand, what I felt playing this game.
Thanks.

So happy you got something out of it - game really does bring you back. Thanks so much for watching
I follow FF since i was around 9years old, im 31 atm and i already watched hundred of videos about this franchise. Let me tell you that your way of explaining the magic around FF7 is one of a kind. Keep up with the good work!
It’s such a special series, the music alone could convince most of that. Glad you could get something out of this video and thanks for watching!
Really impressed that you managed to put into words what so many of us chase when we turn to a Final Fantasy. Congrats on another excellent video essay!
Exactly what I was hoping to capture - thanks so much for watching!
Glad I wasn’t alone in the experience - thanks for the thoughtful passage and for watching!
@@CView Thanks for your work
Thank you for finding your fantasy while adulting!
It will not please everyone, but a true artist continues to express its art no matter what
Can’t wait to see where it all leads - glad you could find time to play this incredible game. Thanks for watching
Wow best video I ever seen & best game i ever played ❤
love the review. i’m right there with you. these characters are written so well they feel real and i love the dynamic between all of em

That was a beautiful love letter to Rebirth. It gave me all the right feels and your use of music is spot on. liked, subscribed and a big thank you for this video.
This is the best video I've seen about the game on this website. Incredible work!
Glad you enjoyed and got something out of it :) Thanks for giving it a chance
Fantastic video, and love the progression of your take. Rebirth took me back to those days of wandering through the old rpgs I would replay so many times when I was younger. I might not end up replaying games like this or that nearly as much now that I'm much older, but the magic still exists, even if it's for a shorter time.
All the matters is that the magic doesn't die. Thanks for watching
Real amazing game. A real labor of love the likes you never see nowadays. I hope part 3 is made with just as much care despite low sales and bad reception from 'Gamers INC' and so called final fantasy 'fans'.
Maybe sales will pick up on a rerelease for pc or something. Either way, can’t wait for part 3
@@CView I hope it wins Goty so that maybe it can garner more interest. I honestly believe this is the best combat system i've ever seen in a jrpg and should be the way forward for this series.
@@deacubogdan2263 the combat system is unbelievably good - I don’t get tired of it. I have no idea why 16 don’t leverage more ideas from this game.

What an amazing video. Thank you for conveying VIIRebirth's magic and childhoodness so well. Fortunately we still have FFVII magic to come in the future :D
So much magic - can't wait for Pt. 3
I’ve heard Rebirth is about 50% behind Remake’s sales. I think that’s more substantial than jut a covid adjustment.
This video essay deserves a million more views! Thank you for this ♥️
I couldn't agree more! You hear that UA-cam Algorithm??!
Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed! Here’s to hoping Part 3 is even better!
Very beautiful video. FF7Remake and Rebirth are both incredibly special

Glad you could get something out of the video
@@CView Thank you CView

The writing in the remake series is fantastic so far. I'm looking forward to seeing where things go in part 3.

And hopefully some awards, pc release, etc are enough to get the numbers up. Thanks so much for watching
You may find a similar joy in playing FF9 and 10, and possibly the original 7. Though, they are very different from the modern games you’ve played, they are considered the golden age of Final Fantasy.
I've played X but admittedly, I wasn't swept away. I need to give it another shot for sure - thanks for watching
Aaaannnddd subbed. Incredible work sir
Thanks for taking a chance on the vid - hope you like what's coming!
Man. I’ve never even played this game and feel like I’ve been in it since the beginning! The only UA-camr who could make me feel for spiky haired video game characters 😃 YOU ROCK MR C….. VIEW😎
Great video broski, this vid just wants me to start my second playthrough of rebirth lol.
Hahaha as soon as I finished, I just wanted to play it all over again - such a good game!
Thanks so much for watching
The algorithm strikes again. I’m always glad to see more people join the FFVII fandom. Welcome and enjoy sir. I played the original game many times and I love what they have done with Remake and Rebirth. Patiently waiting for the third game!
Can't wait either! Glad to be a part of the club
Way too kind, but thank you for taking a chance on this video. Hoping I can keep making them
Good video : )
Something ingenious about FF7 and Rebirth in particular, is all the daft crap that Cloud pretends to be ‘not interested’ is actually the point.
What a great video. You definitley deserve more views
Thanks for watching
It’s definitely a magical experience - As soon as I finished the video I wanted to play it over again
That was a beautiful video, editing and narration
❤️ glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching
Thanks for giving the video a chance
Commenting for engagment. Im hoping to play the VII rebirth so I dont want to spoil myself, but what i have seen this video is very well written and executed. I'll let it play while i shower to give it that watch time. Good luck friend, may your work recieve the recognition it deserves
U rock! Come back once you’ve played with ur thoughts!
This video really should have more views.
You’re too kind - thanks for giving it a chance
The "Legend in the Making" returns .... Your passion, insights and personal sharing are very meaningful and appreciated .. very deep piece that gathered momentum and in the end left me genuinely feeling good and smiling .. wondering/hoping when we will see more from CV
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed
FFVII REBIRTH is my GOTY just like FFXVI was my GOTY 2023! Definitely highlights of this current generation! 🔥

I played Xenoblade 2 when it released to completion - I enjoyed it especially the combat and music. Are the others in the series better?
Yes absolutely play Xenoblade
Can I just play 3? Or do I need to know what happened in 1
@@CView you should definitely play them in order, personally i think 1 is the best game out of them, but they are all connected especially 3’s dlc
what a great video!!! the ending was on point
Thanks for watching :) and glad you enjoyed
magical video, thank you for that ❤🔥

Very well done vid! couldnt have said it better myself.
Also enjoyed the vid so sub + like
I’m glad you enjoyed the original and remake/rebirth - been hearing way too many people saying they wish it was just a 1 to 1 remake.
Fantastic. Thank you.
A well-written and edited video! However, I don't think Rebirth's low sales are due to "friction."
I think the low sales are due to two problems - one obvious, the latter less so.
When the first game in a trilogy ends with the heroes declaring that they need to stop the villain from destroying the whole planet, my immediate response should NOT be: "So what?"
That's literally what I said to my TV upon beating Remake. HOW IS THIS A GOOD STORY?"
THAT, I think, is the main reason why Rebirth is underperforming - both Remake and Rebirth (and the marketing for the latter) have failed to provide viewers with a good reason to remain emotionally invested in the story. It's hard to care about anything Sephiroth is doing beyond mere intellectual curiosity (which you can get by simply looking up Rebirth's plot synopsis on Wikipedia). I understand the words being said, but Sephiroth's goals and actions don't make me FEEL anything other than: "Oh. ... OK, then."
When a substantial portion of the audience DOESN'T CARE about whatever your villain is doing, we've got a problem - there's no reason for them to pick up the next game to see where the story is headed.
10/10 game
As a “boomer” who played the OG on day 1 and it being the reason I still play video games…rebirth is the perfect “remake”.
I only blame zoomers for the underwhelming sales. Kidding, well kidding a little. However, no idea how this goat of a game sold less than shitfests, although fun, like helldivers 2. Not gonna hate, but this generation of gamers
Love mindless bs and anything that will win their side of whatever culture war they are on.
Great video and editing. Glad the algorithm brought me to this video.
Only game that comes close to GOTY against rebirth is Astro Bot. Hopefully Rebirth gets it though. Truly a remarkable game.
Bravo. Well said 👏🏼
Ngl i beat rebirth when it csme out, and just a week ago i started to randomly hum the Yuffie bored song😂😂😂😂
Poor rebirth is not getting enough love, hope it wins game of the years and sells lights out on PC
UPA Stans who recognized him from the train in Remake? Good Character AND World Building?? 🎉
0:50 Well, which ones did you play? There has been some pretty drastic changes, in intent and direction of the franchise.
What is that song at 22:59?!
One last date - My dream
Have you tried FFX? That game will give you the magic you look for
I have but I definitely want to revisit - but each time I do I feel like it’s missing the spark of ff7 remake/rebirth
@@CView
I think FFX is a game you have to prepare your mind to play, turn back time 20 years in your head to a time where things were more slow. Todays World is all go go go and FFX is a game you really have to slow yourself and your surroundings down to truly enjoy.
If you play it i would suggest you make a lets play Series out of it with 1 hour episodes but record 4-5 episodes at a time so you spend a lot of time (in the slow mind zone)
Talk to every npc to get to know the world and its people.
I would love to watch and i know a lot of people will as well
I find it funny that you played the other modern FFs to recapture the feeling of FF7 Remake, a game that was deliberately paying tribute to the 90s FFs. Did you play 6-10? Those are the best ones, maybe 12 too?
I’ve played X,XIII, part of XV, and part of XVI - XV I just was so confused during and XVI I found the gameplay pretty stale
@@CView play the older games bro
i hated this game a lot, and i loved the original.
"successfully captured the magic" - person not even born when ff7 came out.
How far into the story does this go, compared ot the original? This is the second part of the redo series, right?
It goes through probably the most iconic moment in the original game, don’t wanna spoil but iykyk
low sales cuz most ppl i know dont even own a ps5 man, that thing needs to be ported to pc pronto
Thats not why the sales are low😂
