Food for thought: Air Zimbabwe is so unsafe that their only crashes were in 1978 and 1979, when their planes were shot down by missiles; if not for those incidents for which they can't be blamed, they'd have a perfect flight record. They seem to possess a better track record than so many "safe" airlines.
I think you're referring to Air Rhodesia 825 and 827. ZIPRA shot down 825 and massacred most of the survivors and 827 ZIPRA shot down and everyone died on board.
All things considered, Air Zimbabwe doesn't look too bad. Whilst the country has a long road to recovery and is in dire need of investment, the fact that Air Zimbabwe is still going is hopefully a source of pride for the people. Cheers Sam!
That's pretty much the last two aircraft left. So many delays, changing flight schedules, etc. The problem is with maintenance, not many skilled staff left plus all the other aircraft have been stripped of parts so you can imagine what they do to fix things.
It's not for lack of local demand that the airline is still going. It's the disparity between their economy, and the American/German economies where one might source a new aircraft - or even up-to-date parts. The cost of a new aircraft is significantly greater to that airline, simply because the seller's economy outmatches theirs. Now, if we could somehow produce safe, reliable aircraft within the economy, even just prop aircraft, we might get somewhere.

"I'm so excited to fly Air Zimbabwe" Sir you can't film on the plane "The seats are broken, no lights, no entertainment, this plane is 30 years old and never been updated"
Shame! I used to fly Air Zimbabwe from Harare to London back in the early 90s on that 767 (200 ER). There were two 767s - Chimanimani and Vic Falls. Before that, the 707 serviced the route - via Athens, Greece. The 707 couldn't make a direct flight to London due to low fuel capacity. There was no inflight entertainment on the 707 - not even music. But there was on the 767, the same entertainment system which, it's sad to note, is no longer working. There was a communal screen at the front of each aisle and one movie was screened per night/flight. The airline was run down due to a succession of very corrupt leaders, one of whom - Peter Chikumba - is currently serving a jail sentence for an insurance scam which defrauded the airline. My father worked for that airline for 22 years.
The 707s did fly directly to London. I flew in them many times before the 767s arrived. The Athens flight did a stop in Larnaca. I remember them vividly because my ears used to hurt when making the approach into Larnaca and hated that leg of the flight. My mum worked for the airline for 22 years as well :D.
@@MegaLmae They were noisy, but a beautiful aircraft none the less. I kind of miss them. My ears used to hurt due to the descent over water into Larnaca, not the noise of the Pratt & Whitney engines.
Due to the most unreasonable boikots of the then Rhodesia(Zimbabwe) these aircraft were leased from South African Airways. They were later sold to that country but were serviced on a regular basis by SAA technicians. Since 1994 this do not happen anymore. Nobody know who do the maintenance work on these aircraft. Presently out of the 6 aircraft they got only 3 is operational. Zim air is prohibited to fly internationally with their aircraft. This is only one tiny aspect falling apart due to greedy politicians.. 😌
search commercial airlines accident. Count major accident with huge number of fatality in last 15 years. Then you will know what airlines is the most dangerous airline in the world. Without counting, i will put Indonesian Airlines Lion Air as most dangerous airlines out there. Have a nice day bro. I am from Indonesia.
I'm wondering why air zimbabwe is banned by the European Union. The EU ban a airline if the airline doesn't meet the safety standards. So it must be an unsafe airline.
AM A ZIMBABWEAN LIVING IN RUSSIA and ooooh my God i used to complain about how economically unfortunate we were until i got here. I mean Russia is better but weather politics and general poverty , i now miss home. Better the poor but sunny healthy country than some so called roses we see in painted pictures yet its not what it looks like. Zimbabwe is a practically better place to stay. my opinion.
They may be poor with money, how rich is their warmth that makes travel beautiful. America may be rich in money, how poor is their warmth that makes travel dull.
Hey Man. Thanks for this. Your review was certainly organic, unscripted, down to earth, truthful , objective and certainly honest! The corporate world out there needs such!
Zimbabwe is a beautiful country. Yes, it may have a lot of problems, but the people are friendly and probably very resourceful. The airports looked nicely designed and clean, and had some interesting local products to try. That 737 looked comfortable, and something to really think about, a regional flight on an airline in a poor country gives out free lunch and coffee. Find an airline in the "rich" countries that does that. I'd fly that airline...if I ever get the chance to go to Zimbabwe.
My teacher was from Zimbabwe, he was an immigrant and probably the most inspiring person I know. He was the only teacher who still believed in me and gave me a chance after years of bad attitude. He learned me about respect and kindness. I’ll never forget him
All countries have problems even the richest ones. It’s all about people hospitality, kindness and humanity. Thumbs up from Algeria. Wish you all the best.
Thanks much for sharing these videos from places all over the world. You are one of the few guys who do these kinds of videos that actually show the real people and real places of the world. Not just all the so-called developed nations.
Sam I am so glad you got to fly on the 737 200. I have more hours on the 200 than I care to admit and I still love the plane. It maybe old but it is a well built plane and if it gets proper maintenance it will fly forever :)
The 737-200 reminds my childhood, I’ve flown many times as a passenger in VARIG and VASP(Brazilian airlines). A very good plane. I became a pilot and now I fly 737-800 and flew the 737-300. Congratulations for the channel Sam!
Sam, You’re doing a great great job with your YT channel. Sharing with us your flight experiences is a tremendous way to discover other cultures and people. Reducing borders and differences between human beings. I would really appreciate more video in Africa, Asia and South America as it is probably where we have no idea how people are travelling. Once again, Thanks a lot for sharing with us your experience William
This brought back many happy memories for me regarding my time living in Bulawayo. I flew from London Gatwick to Harare and then a connection to Bulawayo. As we were landing in Bulawayo, the pilot cranked up the power for a fly around. He spoke on the intercom and informed us that landing had been postponed due to a donkey wandering on to the runway, it’s visible from the starboard side. And there was some ground crew trying to persuade the donkey to leave the runway. We circled twice and eventually landed ten or fifteen minutes later.
A go-around is a safe completion of an approach. This is a very common event in the congested and weather-ridden airspace of the USA. A professional crew always briefs the go-around/missed approach so it is never a surprise when we have to perform one.
I worked for Air Zim for over 9 yrs (till Dec.2001) maintaining the fleet's engines. What I would like to say to anybody who have qualms taking off in Air Zim aircrafts is this: their maintenance personnel are a notch above any you can find at any airline you can think of.
That's great.. l was reading on the website that Air Zimbabwe engineers were the first to perform strut improvement on these Boeings, and they were actually given some recognition by Boeing itself.
You'd have to have worked for "any airline you can think of" to know who's safer. Obviously a self serving statement. Your airline's track record says different.
This is a good advert for Zimbabwe Airlines. Friendly attendants with a good sense of humour, great airline which is actually one of the safest in the world, and the food looks amazing!!
I visited Zim for the first time just after ED took over. 5 weeks travelling around all over. I loved it and being Aussie it was different in almost every way to what I was use to. 10 out 10 for Air Zimbabwe. I knew I was in Africa. 10 out of 10 to the Zimbabwe people for making me feel so welcome. They all knew I was not African 😎 ( of course ) but I am going back very soon. The money exchange rate varies very quickly so just don't expect it may be 1.8. How wonderful to think Zimbabwe can rise again to hopefully somewhere where it once was. Time will tell. If your thinking about a holiday in Zim " do yourself a favour mate " go!
I love these videos because it shows the beauty in cultures and aviation across the world. These people are beautiful, pleasant and love what they do. Thanks for this video!
The one thing I love about different people in Africa is how optimistic, positive and bright they are; full of life and happy with what they have. Meanwhile, we have people with 50x their salaries and 100x their facilities in developed countries in need of counselling, therapies and what not. Kudos to the Air Zimbabwean crew and all the people in this video for displaying their positive energy and happiness. Africa is beautiful.
Interesting plane - so old but interesting to see when it was new Air Zim obviously were super proud when they first ordered it, having gone to all the trouble to get the custom decor and artwork on the cabin bulkheads and dividers. It's actually nice to see that it spent all the time with it's original owners too - so many others would have wound up with a minor operators and had some crappy upgrade to remove all the original features. It's like a little time capsule back into happier times for both the airline and her nation.
That 737-200 is 32.2 years old, delivered (interestingly enough) to Air Zimbabwe in (Ready for this? Drum roll please), 1986!!! Spent it's entire career flying around Africa. What a gem to fly on.
I’d been to Zimbabwe years ago and must say, they are the nicest people in the world. I so loved Harare. Well,Africa is an experience in itself, the people are full of life and you get to learn so much from them. More love❤️
Great video Sam, I lived in Zimbabwe as a kid and grew up next door in Zambia. Zambia Airways also had the 737-200, so this brought back so many childhood memories of those awesome flights on that awesome plane. Cheers! :)

After watching i am pleasantly surprised and pleased that it is actually a pretty great airline and i would take that flight if i ever visited! So what i assume was his actual plan, to positively highlight air zimbabwe, worked
Of course Sam do want as many clicks as possible. I have experience of African airlines only Kenyan Airways and it was okay but I noticed at Dar Es Salaam airport parking plot that my flight has been changed to one leaving 1 hour 10 minutes earlier. Luckily I was there early enough. Well... in real life it left just 10 minutes earlier and soon there was announce "...after 12 minutes we are landing to Zanzibar..." Everything was okay but I was not flying to Zanzibar but to Kenya. I was not worrying, after Zanzibar we took direction to Kenya. Overall four flights with them and not big problems but nothing really good either. Just company taking you from point A to B without any luxury or extra. Ok, price was okay, specially comparing to Emirates but next time I pay a little bit extra and fly Emirates if they do have same route
I've flown Qatar, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, South african Airways, and I've got to say Air Zimbabwe might not be the fanciest BUT there's something nostalgic about it that I like that sets it apart from those others. The staff are friendly, sophisticated, helpful and although there's not entertainment the food is good, and the seats are comfortable. Would recommend!
I am glad that the filming worked out so we can see this video. I like your honesty of Zimbabwe harsh reality of life outside of its luxurious Hotel. I hope that the locals* life has improved since then.
As a Zimbabwean, and from a purely economic point of view, I find it interesting that it's mostly black Zimbabweans flying between South Africa and Zimbabwe, and mostly white Zimbabweans flying between Harare and Bulawayo. There are lots of economic nuances there and I need to know what they are...Number of flights taken and the demographic of the people flying between routes are key economic indicators...could it be that black Zimbabweans are unnecessarily seeking economic opportunities further afield when they are right there in Zimbabwe??
@@MegaLmae Well, I am an economics and business student. But I think this kind of research topic would be best conducted locally where direct sources is available. Maybe you could contact universities in Zimbabwe to tackle this.
Clearly everyone here is delusional. The only plane that is unsafe is the 737-*800 MAX*. All other 737s are *SAFE TO FLY*. Do not worry if you're flight is on a 737. The dangerous aircrafts have been grounded therefore meaning *they are NOT* going to serve passengers. Rest assured.

My mum worked for the airline for 22 years as well :D.
taridean oh, I remember taking the 707 flight via Athens and assumed it was a refuelling stop-over. And yes, it was the noisiest aircraft back then.
I hear people say Bangladesh airline is dangerous too
@@MegaLmae They were noisy, but a beautiful aircraft none the less.

Are we just going to ignore both the 737 landings, they were really smooth

Morgan McCarthur just wondering how since they have no crashes .
I PARRY U their safety violations are endless, and are not allowed to fly to a lot of international airports because of it.

Wow thanks

The one thing I love about different people in Africa is how optimistic, positive and bright they are; full of life and happy with what they have. Meanwhile, we have people with 50x their salaries and 100x their facilities in developed countries in need of counselling, therapies and what not. Kudos to the Air Zimbabwean crew and all the people in this video for displaying their positive energy and happiness.
Africa is beautiful.
All that extra income come with exponential amount of stress.

The title is for click bait. I clicked it to see why it was so dangerous and what would happen. After watching i am pleasantly surprised and pleased that it is actually a pretty great airline and i would take that flight if i ever visited! So what i assume was his actual plan, to positively highlight air zimbabwe, worked
See the title again. It's with a question mark.
that's what i also realised
He is proving it is good there was a rumor that is was he worst and he proved it was wrong
Ok, price was okay, specially comparing to Emirates but next time I pay a little bit extra and fly Emirates if they do have same route
never watched this channel before it certainly makes me realise how much i miss flying because of this virus.

Hi.
That is a good research question
