Raggedy Ann: The Musical Adventure (aka Rag Dolly) is a dark fantasy musical with a book by William Gibson and music and lyrics by Joe Raposo. It's based on the children's stories by Johnny Gruelle and is loosely related to the 1977 feature film Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, which included variations of a few songs. The story centers on Marcella, a dying young girl whose toys come to life and take her on a magical adventure to meet The Doll Doctor, in hopes that he can mend her broken heart. The show created a controversy in Albany, it was a renowned sensation in Moscow, a notorious flop on Broadway, and it went on to develop a cult following through bootleg recordings. Lyrics -
[WITCH]
WHAT DID I LOSE
WHEN DID I LOSE IT
WHEN DID THE HIGH LIFE GO LOW
AND HOW DID I GO SO FAR
WHAT DID I THROW AWAY FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GLORY
WHY DID I TURN MY BACK TOO SOON
BEFORE I LEARNED THE STORY
WHERE DID I GO
WHAT DID IT GET ME
WHEN ALL THE GOOD LIFE GOES BAD
AND WHEN YOU'VE BEEN HAD YOU SEE
NOT EVERY SHINY THING IS WHAT IT OUGHT TO BE
WHAT DID I LOSE
AND WHEN DID I LOSE ME.
[RAGGEDY ANN]
CAN YOU STILL REMEMBER
WHAT IT IS TO WAKE UP
IN A PLACE WHERE SOMEONE'S ALWAYS
WAITING JUST TO CARE
IS THERE STILL A PERSON
WHO LOVES YOU MORE EACH DAY
SOMEONE WHO KEEPS GIVING THINGS
THEY NEVER TAKE AWAY.
IS THERE STILL A MOMEN
WHEN A HEART IS OPENED
TO A PLACE WHERE JOY AND LIGHT
AND LAUGHTER FILL THE AIR
SOMEWHERE NOT TOO DISTANT
CAN YOU STILL REMEMBER
WHERE'S THE PLACE WHERE SOMEHOW, SOMETIME,
LOVE IS ALWAYS THERE.
[BOTH TOGETHER]
So beautiful and touching! Love this show and the fact that this is all part of Marcella’s fever dream where she would like her mother to feel this way makes it even sadder from both sides. Raggedy Ann has a lovely voice too. So awesome.
everything about this song is amazing, the harmony, they're voices complement each other so well, the pitch, the vocal range, the vibrato, the emotion, this is probably my favorite song in the show
One of the best songs in. The show
(SPOILERS) this makes me a little sad sense it probably was a dream and Marcella just imagined that her mother missed her. Not only that but her mother ran away again which may symbolize that she's not coming back no matter how much Marcella wants her to.
I hate that this is one of the most gut wrenching musical theater songs and the show gets no recognition
well the show flopped hard on broadway (only lasted 5 performances before it closed), and then it was lost media for years, so I'm not surprised it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I think if the show had been more successful, this song and a couple others could have become standards
@@helloladder obviously i know lol. Im saying that its sad the show flopped so hard it got lost cuz it has songs like these that are AMAZING. Ive been obsessed with this musical and raggedy ann since it got released online
The emotional feel in ivy's voice never fails to tear me up.
Both of them have such powerful voices 😍
Keep coming back to this performance. If not for anything else, I want this emotional moment to be brought to the forefront of stage musicals.
sobs
Sobs with you
This song really gets me
oh my god thank u so much for uploading!! I’ve been wanting to see this on the stage for so long 😭
np!! the full show is linked in the description :) there's also an effort to revive the show and return it to the stage!
Am i the only one who favorites the 80s Applause dolls because of this musical?
Just watched the full recording a few days ago! This song and “Gone” are my favorites, they’re just chilling! Honestly all the songs are great :)
Not me crying rn lol
My favorite
This made me crying what Ann said,
It makes me so sad that Marcella only dreamed that her mother misses her, and even then her mom left...
This song is so gut wrenching and beautiful. Its a shame more people don't know about this musical...praying for a revival.
a revival is closer than it may seem ;)
