Update on the Raggedy Ann Musical: FOUND MEDIA!

- A full performance of the long-lost Raggedy Ann musical (AKA Rag Dolly) has finally made its way online! I'm here reporting on my thoughts, along with bits of trivia and notes on how parts of the script changed during the show's development.

Having been in the Kennedy Theatre and Broadway productions, I can say that I always thought that the kids got this show much more than the adults. They seemed to understand how seriously to take it - and had fun with it, while the adults were just appalled.
yes, that's what i've heard from other people who had worked on the show. how unfortunate that parent reactions contributed to its eventual downfall. it's also lovely to see another member of the original company! if you don't mind me asking, what role did you have in the kennedy center and broadway productions?
I like to think Joe Raposo asked God to unearth this for us after he got to heaven. This was always his passion project, going back to the idea of doing this as a holiday project for CBS. Speaking of that amazing talent, I gotta ask...did you get to meet him, and did he give you one of his trademark bear hugs? I wish I could have met him myself...he was taken way too soon.
it definitely deserves a revival with some updates/changes but keep the dark tone. thanks for the update would never have discovered it without this channel
we've been working on it since February!
Some personal changes:
*Make Marcella around age 12 or 13, because that was the age when the real Marcella died & the show is an alternative (and fictional) timeline where Marcella does get to live pass 13 after all.
*Give Raggedy Andy a bigger role as much as his sister and Marcella. Like say that it's both his & Ann's hearts that they sacrifice to save Marcella.
*Replace Baby doll with Babette.
*Drop the whole weird love shape plot. Although Andy does blush when Marcella kisses him in the end & bashfully admits that he loves her (which some might think it's a romantic gesture 🤷🏼♀️).
*Instead of wanting Marcella to be his queen (gross), just make General D some sort of death demon that wants to take Marcella's soul to the Isle of Irredemable & Regrets.
*Red Fang/Wolf & Yellow Yum Yum/Bat aren't involved in a bizarre romance, but they have a goal in the show to steal Ann & Andy's hearts because not only were those hearts the cure for Marcella, but they believed that the hearts will make [Wolf & Bat] whole again & return to their true forms.
*For an extra bit in end, after Poppa sewn in new hearts in Ann & Andy & he left Marcella's room, the toys come to life again one last time before the show ends & show glad they are that Marcella is finally cured, and of course she gives both Ann & Andy a Thank You kiss (the latter who blushed like I've said earlier).
Wait, Keshia Anders, Marcella kissed Andy? Where?
Hopefully, now that we have a version of the show that we can actually see, maybe there’ll be a better chance of a revival of the musical like Ivy Austin is hoping for.
Thank you so, so much Colin. Truly, there's no thanking you enough. Your original video helped me discover the fandom and without it I'd never have created RARE. Without you covering the musical, this would have never surfaced. None of this would ever have happened. My life did a 180 after finding Raggedy Ann, and so far, it's a dream. Again, thank you so, so much. Here's to hoping we find even more!

Lost media that gets found always makes me happy, even if I know nothing about the media in question or I'm not a fan. In general, I'm all for the preservation of the arts; I think all art, even the bad art, has value to it, and should be preserved to examine and learn from it. With the Raggedy Ann musical, there were some good qualities to it that maybe someone someday will learn from and improve on. At the very least, fans can finally enjoy this obscure musical now, and that makes me happy.

as grateful as I am that we have any full version of the musical to watch I really hope the Broadway show gets found someday because this is a very early version of the musical a lot stuff was changed and refined it would be great if there was a full recording of the Broadway show that can be viewed so we can really see how much was changed

I am so happy that the stage play footage is found and the song Blue it's also my favorite song from the movie I really think Raggedy Ann should have another movie based on this play

I will personally have to disagree on General D’s I Come Riding being better than Wolf’s though. While yes David from the demos performs it much better than Tom, I’d like to say that giving it to Wolf gives the song a much more rounded theme of grief and regret, at well as warning those from following his same path. While the General D versions are a little more themetically one-note “look how bad I am”. But to each their own, maybe I’m just Wolf obsessed.
I agree that Wolf singing it right after Bat's death is haunting, seemingly a character at a psychological breaking point. But, reading the troubled history of the song, I wonder how much of that's intended, and how much is "just get the song into the show"?
According to Wikipedia, Raposo originally wrote it as "She Comes Riding," and nobody in the company could agree what that was supposed to mean, so they changed the pronoun and gave it to General D, THEN transplanted it over to Wolf because Paul Haggard didn't have the vocal chops?
@@kphoenix5942 Oh I agree that it was definitely given to him because of the issues they had training Paul. Especially because it was given back to General D as soon as David stepped in to fill the shoes in the 85' run. But I consider it a happy accident that no one appreciated at the time.
@@kphoenix5942 Funnily enough, from the beginning Gibson said that they considered "I Come Riding" as out of the question, and yet that's what they ended up sticking with for the bway.

@@kphoenix5942 Yes! Hopefully the revival effort manages to pull it together. At least we're not daydreaming about murdering each other (looking at you, Gibson).

Fun fact: Mark Baker (Andy in the 77’ Musical Adventure movie), was actually supposed to reprise his role as Andy for this musical (an earlier version before this one, where the Raggedies are in the circus or something, (and Scott who got the part for this actual final version was his understudy as well, unfortunately Mark dropped out of the whole thing when Ann became more of the lead role, and Scott took over as we all know as Andy in the end, (but I’m assuming Mark was actually gonna get the actual part as Andy in this version later on as well if he didn’t drop out, it’s not confirmed, but I think it was really likely).
Scott is great as Andy and everything, but imagine it, we could of had Mark back in the musical as Andy again! (I’m all honestly I think “No Girl’s Toy” and “Candy Hearts And Paper Flowers” would of made it in if he was in it too. 😊 )
I literally ended my binge-watch of you yesterday by re-watching the Raggedy Ann video you did, and I'm so thrilled this was the immediate follow-up I saw in my recommended!

I did hear that if this show gets enough attention there will be a revival.
I remember seeing your first video on in a while back and it's feels satisfying when lost content is found. And I have this feeling of euphoria whenever I see recorded videos from the 80s/90s because it just feels like I open a time capsule.
I finally watched the show for myself and... Yeah I could see why the parents were complaining. 😥
Not that it's bad, but if we're to be revived, it would need some tweaking. It's just bleak and the plot's not that cohesive and a lot of the songs are forgettable. And I agree with you on how kids deserve to be introduced to dark elements BUT you have to balance it out with some lightheartedness. And General D's "affections" for Marcella...NO! Just NO! 😫
The group who found the video is also working on revising the script for a potential revival!

I've joked to myself that, as soon as this musical gets just a little bit more of a cult following, General D. is going to become the next Tumblr Sexyman, and I don't see that happening if the rat design was kept. But then, people found a way to do that to a fat skeleton and a weird little puppet man with a big nose, so what do I know?

Hey Colin LooksBack I have a request for a piece of lost media you could talk about, there was a pilot for an adult show that the Jim Henson company that was supposed to make called Tinseltown, it’s about these two puppets that are a gay couple, the two main characters’ names are Bobby Vegan (performed by Bill Barretta) and Samson Knight (played by Brian Henson)
