Raggedy Ann: The Musical Adventure (aka Rag Dolly) is a dark fantasy musical with a book by William Gibson and music and lyrics by Joe Raposo. It's based on the children's stories by Johnny Gruelle and is loosely related to the 1977 feature film Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, which included variations of a few songs. The story centers on Marcella, a dying young girl whose toys come to life and take her on a magical adventure to meet The Doll Doctor, in hopes that he can mend her broken heart. The show created a controversy in Albany, it was a renowned sensation in Moscow, a notorious flop on Broadway, and it went on to develop a cult following through bootleg recordings. I like how here you can hear her sing really well and then it goes back into that ann voice

I remember this show was just too scary for children. The poor kid sitting in back of me was crying in horror during the first act and whoever took him didn't return for act two.

Honestly the entire concept itself is pretty dark too since it’s based off of an actual child’s death. Still a great musical with deep themes.
It being too scary is actually why it failed. Parents complained to news stations about the material being too scary
Raggedy Ann would fit really well in a stop-motion movie style. When I watch the Broadway musical, I think of how crazy and trippy it would be as a SM puppet film.

Ive Austin is great. I wish there was a full clip of her doing the more hammy and energetic variant of this though. It's so fun.
I don’t understand how this show played well in Moscow and sold out every performance, but closed after 5 performances on Broadway, this show would have success if it was on Broadway right now
the show was much different by the time it came to broadway. producer meddling led to major cuts and changes to the show that ultimately made the show worse and led to its demise. However, I believe that even if the show had been performed on Broadway the exact same way it had been performed in Moscow, it still wouldn't have been successful. it may have lasted a bit longer, but the show just isn't a Broadway show. it's not fit for that large of a theater and high ticket prices. The show is much better fit for a smaller more intimate space-- I believe it could have thrived Off-Broadway.
