Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure is a 1977 American live-action/animated musical fantasy film directed by Richard Williams, produced by the Bobbs-Merrill Company, a publishing arm of ITT, and released theatrically by 20th Century Fox. A 1941 short film had previously featured the Raggedy Ann and Andy characters created by Johnny Gruelle.

It brings me back to watching kinda cheesy, kinda standard, but usually super innocent and kindhearted kids shows that I might watch, like stuff from Barney, Prayer Bear, Sesame Street, and ESPECIALLY Mr. Rogers Neighborhood!💖💖💖💖
This movie may have had a messy story and freakish nightmare fuel, but it has absolute PERFECT casting. You can tell each and every voice actor gave it their all. Raggedy Ann and Andy especially had amazing voices, which only made their dynamic all the more wholesome. The voice acting was honestly one of the only reasons why I decided to sit through the whole movie.
THE STRANGEEST? I grew up on Russian animation after the collapse of the USSR !! YOU NOT IDEA WHAT THE STRANGE AND SCARY CHILDREN'S CARTOONS MEAN !!

I watched a Russian cartoon and children were smoking! I was so pissed.
You know I always felt bad for Williams. It seemed like everything he wanted to do either went over budget or overtime, and then he’d get dropped. Imagine what we could’ve gotten from him had those factors not been a problem.
Williams was an artist and a visionary...two things both praised and loathed by the entertainment industry.

The Soviet animation has a lot of great and bizarre stuff. Like my favorite, "The Treasure Island", you shouldn't see the export version, though, it's ruined by editing, you can find the original one with subtitles on UA-cam.
I love soviet Alice in Wonderland! It was one of my fav cartoons and also Soviet Alice and the mirror :) (Not sure if I translated it right)
You can take any kid-friendly genre and twisted into something truly horrific. Fairy tales were nothing nice before they were Disneyfied.
That's why there are almost no book accurate animated movies for Hans Christian Anderson books.

@@gracehaven5459 Ehh... The Little Mermaid isn't really *horrifying* even compared to some other Hans Christian Andersen stories (seriously, if you want horrifying HCA then read The Red Shoes). It's more just straight-up sad than anything else. Bambi though...I'll give you that one. That book is pure nightmare fuel. Same with The Fox & The Hound.

@@gamerjoe3297 You could try Toei. They did an adaptation in 1976 (13 years before Disney’s version). Aside from a song sequence, the movie is faithful to the original story including the ending.
The creeper dolls are called "twin pennies" and are a type of fully articulated penny doll. They were popular (though really ugly, IMHO) because they were fully posable and clothes for them were not hard to come by, or else easy to make. The fact that she had two that were exactly the same was probably because of two relatives buying her the same thing as a gift by accident.

One thing I admired when I watched this was how the animators were credited before the actors, because let’s be honest they’re the real stars. The greedy scene is so well animated only Emery Hawkins could do that.
I got to see Ann's performance of "Rag Dolly" a dozen years ago. So delicate and sweet.

Yeah Mr. Greedy was one of my many childhood traumas. But I had a huge crush on Raggedy Ann. She was just so lovably sweet and pure.

Finally, this movie is a lot like like kiddie version of Ralph Bakshi’s films. Also Richard Williams used some of those animators to work on Thief and the Cobbler!
He also directed the animation for WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT - another one of my favorites!
Bakshi did direct the cartoon adaptation of dr Seuss' Butter Battle Book. For a cartoon with social subject matter of his caliber he actually didnt Bakshi it up.

This was fascinating nightmare fuel during my childhood -it was terrifyingly surreal, but I loved it, couldn't get enough. As an adult, I really dig Ralph Bakshi -I understand why many people have VERY mixed feelings about his work, but goddamn, does that man ever use animation to its potential!

And he definetly should watch "Investigation Held by Kolobki" (Следствие ведут Колобки) by Aleksander Tatarskiy (produced in 1986 and 1987, don't confuse with another cartoon with the same name). There are 4 episodes on youtube with english subtitles on youtube
I actually loved that movie too, despite it's flaws. It's very weird, and incomprehensible, but it's charming, and well animated. It's cute, yet not afraid to be ugly at times.
It really should get a rerelease somehow for home media.

I adored this movie as a kid. The Greedy portion was fascinating.
As a recommendation: The Devil and Daniel Mouse from '78. Two mice want to be famous musicians, and one sells her soul to the Devil. Not very long, but the Devil used to scare me as a kid.
Did you know that the animator who worked on The Greedy also did Woody Woodpecker and the Looney Tunes? In fact, several Looney Tunes animators worked on this film. And that makes this film more lovable to watch.
That short went on to inspire Rock n Rule. No joke.

I Canadian and remember seeing a commercial on Teletoon as a youngster for the latter film. Never ended up watching it though. But I did watch the other film Doug mentioned in this video, Gay Purr-ee, and I barely remember a thing from it.
I Cannot wait for him when he reviews 9. That movie is so often forgotten, when it should be remebered, as a great example of a philospichal story as of duty and taking control of your future.

Hey Doug I just want to let you know this past Saturday my father passed away from advance leukemia he had battled it from 2019 all the way through 2020 and passed away in 2021 keep on making the awesome reviews

truly sad to see that platonic acts of love are so uncommon between siblings in U.S. media that the initial reaction is something incest. literally there’s nothing wrong w telling ur siblings that u love and care for them, i envy so much how they can just freely hug each other, i couldn’t tell you the last time my brother hugged me, let alone told me he loved or cared for me.
Also they don’t actually flip flop between siblings and lovers that much at all, the only instance i saw of them as a couple was the Fleischer brothers cartoons in the 40’s but every other version has them as siblings. They were always siblings too, in the books they originate from, in Andy’s first book the first sentence introduces him as Ann’s younger brother. Every other adaptation i’ve seen has been faithful to this except for the Fleischer brothers which probably means they didn’t actually read any of the books. Fleischer Studios, if u don’t know, created Betty Boop, Koko the Clown, and released Popeye the Sailor and i think Felix the Cat cartoons, so needless to say they were very popular so that’s why i think many ppl thought they were a couple because a popular studio depicted them that way.
Please talk about "9" as soon as posible I really enjoy this movie but never see someone talking about it but first see the short that in a way made the movie exist.

"The Adventures of Mark Twain" was a really good movie. There's one part that freaks just about everyone out, and it's really surprising the movie got a G-rating despite this scene.

"The Mouse and His Child" was a really strange animated movie. I remember "the last visible dog" scene really creeped me out as a kid, so much so that I had to cover my eyes as a 5-year-old.
"Sampson and Sally" was not quite as weird, but still had it's moments (I think a walrus ends up dying of toxic sludge at the end of a song and no one bats an eye)

Here's a request for this segment that possibly nobody else would think of: Legends of OZ: Dorothy's Return. Terrible, boring movie for the most part, with the same problem of too many plot-stopping songs. ...But, it also contains Martain Short as a cursed Jester, the main characters turning Patrick Stewart tree into a boat, and a musical number involving Glinda and the Jester's other enemies who have been turned into life-sized marionettes. So there is a weirdness factor here and there. ...Despite having to fast forward through most of the movie's runtime to get to them.
It was also at the centre of a massive scam involving a coffee shop owner, two film producers and Noah Centineo

The youtuber Animat did a better job of telling the story but essentially the movie was crowd funded by the producers hosting parties where they tricked rich and well off people into giving money to the project by promising it to be this massive franchise with all these different things like TV shows, video games, Broadway shows and sequels. Only for most of the money to go towards projects not even linked to the movie, the franchise being abandoned and sold off to another company after they only did one movie and a large chunk of the money going into the pocket of one Chris Centineo who used the money to essentially buy his son Noah into Hollywood by paying off people to let him win auditions which has lead to Noah becoming a big teen star and being hired on for projects like the He-Man reboot and Black Adam
@@mrcritical6751 Yikes, that’s a pretty lengthy list of ass-holery. Although I can’t help but wonder: would it be even remotely possible to make raggedy and popular again? I mean having a doll like that existing in the world of smart phones and battery operated toys and all that kind of stuff? Wow this movie was far from perfect, it did have nice songs and the voice actress for Raggedy Ann and Andy were really well done. Just trying to think what changes they could make to make it… Better than this?

Hello Nostalgia Critic fans, as we wrapped up another season I had a question for the people. Everyone knows the Nostalgia Critic classics like “The Room”, “Batman & Robin”, the Titanic animated movie, “The Garbage Pail Kids”, etc. but I wanted to know what do some people think are the best and funniest modern Nostalgia Critic episodes from say Season 10 (2017) and onwards.
Country Bears, Barney, Holiday in Handcuffs, and Detective Pikachu
Sleepwalkers, Freddy Got Fingered, Nutcracker in 3D, Rapsittie Street Kids, the last two Commercial Specials and It: Chapter Two, among others.
The IT reviews, the editorials, the Season 11's Disney Remake month, the Nutcracker Review, the commercial specials, Shark Tale, and I will always love season 13 for getting me through 2020.
The Chipmunks Movies - especially the second one always gets me laughing.
Fox Kids, That Darn Cat, The Lion King (2019), the IT movies, Norm of the North, Nutcracker 3D, Justice League, Supergirl, and the Commericial Specials obviously.

Haye critic, if you want to see a really crazy visual with a good plot, I advise you to watch the cartoons of the Soviet Union: "Wow, a talking fish!" (Ух ты, говорящая рыба!), "In the blue sea, in white foam ..." (В синем море, в белой...), "Alice in Wonderland" (Алиса в стране чудес) and " Alice in the Loking-Glass" (Алиса в Зазеркалье). You will not regret.
Also "Treasure Island" (Остров сокровищ), it's great. The main thing is to watch with subtitles, not dub. The English dub is terrible.
I never saw this movie in its fullness when I was little, I only had a VHS taken from San Marino with the last 10 minutes (also, in the italian version it wasn't voice acted, it only had a narrator that dubbed every character). I discovered it again a couple of years ago here on UA-cam; I have no idea why, but beside the mindf*cks, it made me cry many times....it gave me some kind of "pure and simple" vibe while watching it, it was truly fascinating. At least, this was my experience.

This movie sounds like a one big fever dream.
At age 10, I knew of the word "psychedelia" and I knew this movie demonstrated that quality. I didn't know acid yet but, Boy! did I feel hip.

As someone who works in a retirement home, where all the old ladies tend to have huge collections of old dolls, I can attest to a huge contributing factor of this movies creepiness: These are all old toys being depicted, and old toys are just....FUCKING TERRIFYING!

Animation historian here, saying that the guys behind this movie wanted it to be a broadway musical and only agreed to animate it after realizing "If we dress up a live actress as Raggedy Ann, people will have nightmares." So it could have been worse, but it wouldn't have been captured on film for the ages.
(The story behind the making-of is absolutely bonkers, and involves a pile of famous animators - the Camel was drawn by the guy who created Goofy and animated Gepetto, and those annoying dolls on springs were by the guy who created Betty Boop - all in the credits at the beginning.)
Also, Didi Conn had laryngitis when she did her lines, but leaned into the throat thing on purpose, because she says Raggedy Ann is "a child, but she's also basically a hundred years old." Which adds a new creepy level if you want.

It was, actually! The made a stage production based off of it back in the 80’s that was a huge hit when it first played in Russia. Sadly it completely flopped when on Broadway.

I feel like you could watch soviet "Alice in Wonderland" or some other cartoons from that period (like "Maugly", "Vinnie the Pooh" or "The treasure island" As a russian I know what I'm talking about, lol. Visuals in all of these are great and they're considered classic from our childhood but some things might seem a bit "freaky"
There's a certain level of psychedelic insanity that really only is possible with hand drawn 2D animation that 3D can't even attempt.

Oh my god, so that really was real? I have the vaguest memory of watching it as a kid and I’ve always wondered wether it was a fever dream or not!
We had this movie on VHS and my little sister and I watched this movie ALL the time. We still to this day sing "Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers" to cheer each other up. It's such a bizarre piece of animation and was a key element in my childhood. I'm so glad you reviewed this because no one I know has EVER heard of it!

Yes!!! I'd love to see Doug's take on that movie. It's such an underrated and unsettling continuation of the Pinocchio story. Some scenes definitely scared the crap out of me as a kid lol. And kinda like Raggedy Ann and Andy, it was never released on DVD or Blu-ray, at least not in the US.

These aren’t exactly “freaky” films, but Willy the Sparrow and The Little Fox (both released by Feature Films for Families) have always stuck out in my memory as being kinda weird and off-beat
Also, Scamper the Penguin, which edited out all the violence in the English release
The Little Fox was good but looking back there was a lot of death in it.

As a person who had the VHS of this movie as a kid, I won't lie, this movie felt like a cr@ckhead's fever dream. But it holds a special place in my heart as being wholesome when it comes to the sibling dynamics of Ann and Andy. There are only two songs in it that I love and still love to this day. Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers, and No Girl's Toy. I guess the Camel with the wrinkled knee's song to a lesser extent.
My memory is vague due to being very young, but I had a lowkey crush on Andy. I love his right amount of sass and protectiveness and he has the most handsome voice.
Foodfight, Son of the Mask and Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa would've been perfect for this brand-new segment, NC, but you already did review of those movies afew years ago.

Critic should check out two Japanese animated films "The Fantastic Adventures Of Unico" from 1981, and it's sequel "Unico in the Island Of Magic" (1983) from the early 1980s. It was two film adaptations of Osamu Tezuka's "Unico" manga series that was made by Sanrio Animation and Madhouse. The Unico films were notable for containing depressing and frightening imagery, with "Unico In The Island Of Magic" being much darker than the previous film. The English Dub has Barbara Goodson (pre-Power Rangers) as the voice of Unico. Both films used to frequently air on The Disney Channel back in the day.

I had thought the memory of watching this on my grandma's living room floor on repeat was a weird nostalgia fueled fever dream, it's been so long since I've seen anyone mention it. I was FASCINATED with it's animation. ...Come to think of it this movie explains a lot about the stories I like now.

I discovered this movie on youtube recently. While the movie is freaky as hell, I love the first portion of the movie when they're in the nursery. It's very charming and I love how the characters interact. Ann's voice is like the sweetest thing I've ever heard, and Andy's tough guy act made a great dynamic. The charm doesn't really stick with me though once they get to the weird shit.
The first two books, one being titled Raggedy Anne and the other Raggedy Andy by Johnny Gruelle are a lot like that, very sweet and charming stories that are like a proto Toy Story. Kids like them, I read them a lot as a kid. The later books are more fairy-tale esque like the later half of the film, but as I remember are still pretty charming.
Just watch soviet Russia version Alice in Wonderland. Believe me Doug - it's very weird.

"Twice upon a time” was a very strange movie that was aired on Disney Channel back in the 80s. I’ve always thought it was one of the weirdest films I’ve ever seen and I have not had a chance to find it to re-see it again. Perhaps would be something to look in to?

Honestly, when you think about it. A lot of kids media is twisted and dark. And I'm so glad Doug is taking a closer look at the stranger side of the dark kids media! I'm all in for this new segment! 😄
If this becomes a regular or semi-regular segment for NC, it's going to be a perfect complement to Doug's "Dark Toons" series, since that one doesn't do dark movies.
In a very real and unironic way, this could be the theatrical version of the concept - bigger budget, higher production value, focusing on dark kids movies - while Dark Toons is the after school cartoon version - smaller budget, lower production value, focusing on TV shows - and that's perfectly okay with me.
Despite first seeing this movie in my 30s it instantly won a special place in my heart...1) because of the gorgeous animation and 2) because of my deep love for the surreal and bizarre. I LOVE fever-dream flicks!
