Hi Andrew, from your videos I understand that part of your pictures are taken in Australia. I might have a tip for you: I crossed the outback of Western Australia several times from south to North and back to Perth, and it is my experience that pictures of remote places in Australia unexpectedly sell extremely well on Adobe as well as Shutterstock (one picture of the Kalgoorlie gold mine more than 200 downloads in just over one years' time). Also pictures of outback landscapes sell much better than I expected.
Hello Hans! many thanks for that tip. Yes, I think it's because very few people can get to such remote locations to provide such content. Your comment has given me extra incentive to get to remote places in Tassie! thanks very much for your thoughts and the tip!
Hi Andrew, great video as always! Regarding panoramas, I take them with my camera handheld, then just automatically merge photos in Lightroom. It's very easy and fast :) But your iphone panorama looks really well! Cheers!
Hi Aleksandra, thanks for the reminder that I can merge panos in Lightroom. I hope your travels are going well and you are capturing lovely things with your camera! All the best for now!
Helloooo Andrew! How funny that you're selling footage of yet another dead bird! Poor thing haha. Thanks for sharing the newspaper topics! I've also been shooting with more intention lately. I recently took some drone photos of local buildings, like the police station, but none of them have sold yet. Here are my september earnings! AS: $68, 25 downloads. $23 firefly bonus and 2 video sales: $24 drone video of wind turbines and $6 drone video of a campsite. Other than that, unfortunately a very slow month on AS for me. SS: $45, 46 downloads. Less 0,10 sales than usual and quite some first time sellers: photos of a path in a forest, the ferry in Amsterdam (taken omw to work!), mountain view in Germany, drone shots of a forest. I also sold a photo of wind turbines 11 times. Highlight: a drone photo of a canal earned me $32,50! Had I not gotten that sale I would've only earned $12 on SS, which really makes me realise that I should upload more (drone) videos. I saw in the comments that you're thinking about getting a drone! Exciting! What’s making you want to buy one?
Hi laura, thanks for the rundown on how you did in September. Interesting that you made a video of Amsterdam ferries on the way to work as I did exactly the same thing 🙂. You're very brave making drone shots of a police station :-)!! I primarily want to get a drone to increase my footage revenue and don't want to spend thousands on a new mirrorless camera to do it. And by the looks of your results it could be a good move. Hope your October is going well. Today we have sunshine!
Hey Andrew, This video gave some good tips about ways to pick different topics for stock shooting. I see in the comments you are looking at buying a drone. I highly recommend you do, as I am seeing great results from my drone photography and videography. I joined BlackBox late last year and have worked hard to upload well over 1,000 clips (probably 95% are drone footage). Although, one of the clips I sold in September was GoPro footage of the small sailing vessel "Lady Nelson" docking in Hobart back in 2018. My BB returns over the past few months have really started to increase. Plus drone shooting is great fun!
Thanks a lot Alistair. That's great to hear. Also really useful info about Blackbox. It's a worry who to upload footage to now with Pond5 falling by the wayside. The Lady Nelson, that brings back many fond memories of Hobart for me 🙂. Thanks and all the best!
Thanks for the information. When you say "gross" is that the amount you were paid by the agency? Before any tax is due in your country. I watch a lot of quiz shows and keep an eye on what still photos they use and the credits tell me what agency they have used.
Hi Richard, I use the word gross as the amount before Alamy take their cut (I think around 50%). I also Look to see what the game shows and also the Discovery programmes use for stills and footage.
Hi Andrew! Great, very entertaining video like always! Cashing on another dead bird, what a creepy niche you found :) I like your way of researching for topics in the newspaper. September was crazy busy for me, I got married, spent 2 weeks on honeymoon in Cornwall, and got jobless (company was not profitable, so they stopped with their activities in Amsterdam completely). I made 250 bucks with stock, so didnt reach my 300 target, but still kind of okay-ish month.
Hey Milos, congrats on being a husband! I'm sorry to hear you have to find a new job. Yes, you are right. It is a unique niche I have found myself in. But the dead rat and pidgeon photos don't seem to do so well 🙂. Well done on hitting 250 and I hope you break 300 for October
Hi Andrew, thanks for another interesting video. September was unusually good for me. With added $25 Firefly bonus AS earned me $63. My portfolio has only 1028 images. I have 60 images sitting there for weeks, waiting to be moderated, which is very frustrating. The biggest surprise for me was the sale of three videos at SS that earned me $72. Image sales $18. I will concentrate more on videos in future. A couple of days ago I travelled to London and in 3 hrs I managed to get 6 good editorial clips to upload. Sadly, London is not longer a safe city these days and one has to be very vigilant due to increasing number of phones and camera snatching, which takes the fun out of filming. I tend to use a lightweight tripod as I hate shaky videos - there are plenty of those at SS!! This makes shooting videos demanding and time consuming. However, finding the right subjects is the hardest thing. I made good money at P5 before its merger with SS but now it’s quite unproductive as you said. How’s you book coming along? BW Nishi
Hi Nishi, thanks for the rundown of your September and interesting to hear about London being unsafe. A real shame. It sounds like you were able to do well despite the risks though. Yes the video agency pool is shrinking with SS incorporating P5. That is a real blow. I've been looking into Storyblocks but my account is blocked there since I stopped uploading there a few years ago. Figuring out who else to start up with, whether it be Blackbox or others. Not sure yet at this stage. The book has struck a road block. Since I had a professional editor look at it. My momentum stumbled and I haven't been sure whether the entire theme is worth the trouble or not since I'm so busy with everything else. It will require extensive revision which will need a lot of time and energy. I've parked it and am focusing on an easier task (uploading stock images/footage until I decide what to do :-). Have a great weekend! AB
@@andrewbalcombe1338 Hi Andrew, I’m really sorry to hear that you had to abandoned your book project. You might be able to pick it up again at some later date. I worked in London for 30 years and never had any safety concerns, but just in the three years things have deteriorated. Mopeds and e-scooters crimes have risen sharply. They go over the pavement and snatch cameras, phones and purses. Sadly, nothing is being done about it. I’m told Madrid is worse than London!! It does make photography and videography risky in quieter places, especially if you are on your own. Nevertheless, we have to keep going...

Hi Andrew, just a small question. Do you upload yje shot taken from you phone directly as is, or do you some kind of editing using some software? Greetings from Belgium, Dirk
often I don't edit the file. sometimes i'll edit in lightroom though. phone pics often have enough sgarpness and colour pop and exposure. camera pics in RAW often need these things tweaked. my phone is linked to my mac so i can transfer pics farely easily from my computer to Lightroom if needed.
