    when turbos fail the oil gets burnt in the downpipes not in the combustion chamber. Not many people know this but if your valve cover is leaking you dont have enough vacuum in the crank case and the turbos rely on the vacuum to drain properly. That's the majority of time how turbo seals fail. I would pull the downpipes to double check.

      My n54 has dry downpipes but intake witch intercooler in oil. Then turbos are alive? I think it PCV...

    I had a bolt snap off on the valve cover as well but after using a few types of extractors I got it out without any marks at all to the head. Maybe you tried a few things too before just stopping the drilling I don't know. But if you didn't try a couple of things that are not destructive to the head I encourage you next time to do so. One other thing is that if you find that someone in the future has torqued the valve cover on too hard try loosening the bolts all around it (If they don't break on you LOL) then re torque them to spec in order as required before putting a whole new one on. I did this on one of mine once and it worked a charm and it stopped leaking oil into the head area and at the rear. Both areas were leaking due to the torquing of the bolts incorrectly.

    Tip: fill in the gasket channels with engine assembly grease and it will hold the gasket in place during reinstallation, and all grease will burn off on first drive.

    Plugs didn't look too bad, seems like the valve cover gasket failed enough to let the oil make it to the combustion chamber. Also explains why the smoke was more dense at startup with the higher oil pressure.
    With the boost leak, obviously replace the clamp and pressure test the intercooler. As always great content and can't wait to see the next video in the 335 wagon series

    Pcv/bad crank case ventilation is a common issue for that amount of smoke on non turbo models. I imagine having a turbo makes it a “bad turbo seal” issue in the mix. But usually it’s the pcv or valve cover.

    Nice one, glad the smoking has subsided a bit, I need to replace the valve cover on my e90 with n55, pcv is shot..my N54 is all good so far haha

    I bought a 335i on Craigslist too it had catless downpipes and it was smoking like crazy. I replaced the pcv and put on stock downpipes and it stopped smoking completely

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 роки тому +2

      Hopefully the PCV was the issue! If you're still burning oil but you have cats, the will absorb the smoke until the cat is completely clogged up, and the car will run like 💩. Good fix though, and thanks for sharing!

      @@TheBimmerBarn I replaced the pcv first and it mostly stopped just the occasional puff. But big difference compared to before. Then I put on stock downpipes cus I had to smog it and then few weeks later sold it. But it completely stopped after I put on stock downpipes so I’m guessing it was pcv

    word of advice.. use the ngk single prong spark plugs over the bosch oem triple prong ones.. the bosch ones are made from copper and do not burn hot enough.. this will lead to carbon build over time and constant misfires

    changed my valve cover a couple of years ago and everything went well. Fixed oil leak problem. Also changed oil filter gasets at the same time, good.
    Today I just changed the spark plugs an now it is idling very roughly to the point where it stalls. Forums suggest gap is the issue. Changed with Bosch, numbers look identical to originals (ZR5TPP33). The gap on the removed ones was about .036, I just installed the new ones pre-gapped at 0.032. Is the gap relevant? Should the gap be larger? Forums seem to suggest between 0.022 and 0.034. Please help. This is a stock N55 on a 2012 335i

    How long do these valve covers last i got my valve cover gasket redone like 8 months ago 😢

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 роки тому

      😬Yes, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really used to installing these types of sparkplugs, but they have a soft crush washer and are supposed to go to 22nm, which I can "feel" by hand. When in doubt, use a torque wrench!

    So the smoke went away by replacing valve cover gasket ? My car has been smoking like crazy.

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 роки тому +1

      In my case, the smoke was a buildup of oil that hadn't burned off because the dme was faulty and running on 3 cylinders. If your car is smoking out the exhaust blue or white smoke, it's likely an issue inside the engine or inside the turbos. Good luck!

      Check the crankshaft position sensor, check fault codes, compression test, make sure it has fuel... Just some basics but good luck! There's so many things it could be, fault codes will tell you the most information.
